Some Guy Who Kills People
Stars: Kevin Corrigan, Karen Black, Barry Bostwick, Lucy Davis, Ariel Gade | Written by Ryan A. Levin | Directed by Jack Perez
Movie fans are very thankfully for the internet, they may deny it at times but through it they have discovered films they never would have heard of and discovered the world of the independent movie. These films tend to gain attention through word of mouth, or words on screen and play festivals to try and get fans interest. Sometimes they are helped by bigger names in the industry that can get them attention just through a name, but mostly it’s that ability to catch the eye of the fans. Some Guy Who Kills People is a film that caught John Landis’ eye, so much that he became an executive producer, to film geeks that’s almost a golden seal of approval, but it was...

I know that when you saw the trailers for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter you were as dumbfounded as the rest of us. While we’ve seen literal adaptations of some of the classics turned into zombie novels (and by the same culprit as Al:vh no less) this seems like a stretch. Let’s take an historical figure, well loved who has established mythology and then completely turn it to our own horror lovin’ devices. I’m sure this is the literary adventure that our forefathers imagined when they formed this nation. Life, liberty and the pursuit of horror (or at least camp classic entertainment). Come listen to Jeff Konopka, Shawn Savage and Jesse Bartel as they dissect this one. I think it’s safe to say, it is exactly what you think it is. The Dead Air has the 101 on this purposely historically inaccurate work of fiction.

'Some Guy Who Kills People' Movie Review
Some Guy Who Kills People certainly lives up to its title, but it sure is more than just that. This film is to quite simply put it, fantastic! I enjoyed this film a lot; it is a clever blend of horror, comedy and family drama.
I had no idea what to expect from this one, I dove in blind and I came out with a huge smile on my face.
The story here is about Ken (a fantastic Kevin Corrigan), he’s a loner fresh out of the loony bin trying to get his life on track. We get the idea he ended up there from a horrific event caused by a group of guys, and thus it has left him very scarred in more ways than one. As Ken apparently runs into one of those...

Coming up with an original concept for a slasher film these days is an impossibility. So what can a budding filmmaker with an itch for violent deaths and twist endings do to make his project stand out from the rest of the Scream clones? Director Jack Perez decided to meld his gore-fest with a tween coming-of-age story. The result is a rather unique indie-flavored little film entitled Some Guy Who Kills People.
Ken Boyd (Kevin Corrigan) is fresh out of a mental institute. He's trying to put his grim past behind him, but the kids who sent him to the loony bin still enjoy tormenting him. Ken's best friend (Leo Fitzpatrick) gets him a job at the local ice cream shop. He soon begins a relationship with an English girl (Lucy Davis) new to town. At the same time, he finds out he has a daughter (Ariel Gade). Things get...

Poor Ken. After recently being released from a mental hospital after a suicide attempt, he is living with his mother and employed at a dead end job slinging ice cream. Ken is working a private birthday party, when his past comes back to haunt him after he is confronted by one of his high school bullies. Armed with a dark rage, he fantasizes about killing the guys who put him through hell all those years ago, and it’s not long before those fantasies become a reality.
With Some Guy Who Kills People, we are presented with a refreshing black comedy that has a pretty clever murder mystery tucked neatly inside. Director Jack Perez has a solid grasp on tone and manages to juggle genres quite well, never watering down the comedy for the sake of drama or the horror for the sake of comedy. *full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by writer Ryan A. Levin. Director: Jack Perez. Writer: Ryan A. Levin. Cast: Kevin Corrigan, Barry Bostwick, Karen Black, Leo Fitzpatrick, Ariel Gade, Eric Price, Lucy Davis, and Lou Beatty Jr. Some Guy Who Kills People is a successful film primarily for combining so many genres. Genres noted by this reviewer included: comedy, horror, revenge thriller, romance and family. It is hard for some filmmakers to nail one genre. Writer Ryan A. Levin, director Jack Perez and the rest of the crew bring six genres to life. There are a lot of layers here. There is also a lot of murder. Part serial killer film, Some Guy Who Kills People is more about the humanness of relationships and the struggles inherently therein. The story follows Kenny (Kevin Corrigan). He has recently been released from a psychiatric ward for depression and suicidal tendencies.

If you’ve paid attention to any of the goings on here at The Liberal Dead, you’ve probably heard at least one of us mention a little film called “Some Guy Who Kills People.” Around the time that review copies of “Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil” were being sent out, I was on facebook praising that film for being one of the best horror/comedy outings to come along in quite some time. A good friend of Tld(Christian Burgess) asked me if I was able to see “Some Guy Who Kills People” yet, to which I of course responded, “no, but please tell me more.” How could I not pursue a movie with such a title? Once I learned that Kevin Corrigan was in the lead role, I was sold. Corrigan I feel, is one of the most underrated actors working today. I was a huge fan of...

Some Guy Who Kills People will be released on DVD this week and I recently talked with director Jack Perez about the making of the movie. Continue reading to learn about how he ended up taking over as director for John Landis, his contributions to the script, and putting together a strong ensemble cast.
How did you first get involved on this project and end up taking over as director for John Landis?
Jack Perez: I didn’t know that Landis had been attached to direct the movie when I first saw the script. Ryan Levin had sent him the script and he said he had wanted to direct it. Then he got the opportunity to direct Burke and Hare, which was a pet project that he had wanted to make for a long time. He very kindly stepped away and stayed on as an executive producer, but wanted to find a new director.

Already, at age 15, actress Ariel Gade has managed to make quite a name for herself inside and out of the genre world, and Dread Central had the opportunity to chat briefly with her about her most recent project: Some Guy Who Kills People
Ever since making her debut on television at the young age of 6, Gade has gone on to co-star in films like Envy, Dark Water and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem and portrayed youngster Rose Varon in the cult classic ABC TV series "Invasion." In Jack Perez's dark comedy Some Guy Who Kills People she appears as precocious tweener Amy Wheeler, who not only discovers she has a dad (Kevin Corrigan) but also figures out that he very well could be the killer behind a string of grisly murders in their small town.

They say Cannes "stays in your blood" and it's true! Three weeks later, here's the final interview from my trip. I wanted to finish my interview tour of the movie business with a real blue collar film festival so I sat down for a drink with Rachel Richardson-Jones, aka "Lady Grimm"; a film producer and director of the Grimm Up North International Film Festival of Horror and Cult Films.
How long has your festival been running and how did it get started?
Grimm is now in its fourth year and was born out of shameless self promotion for our first feature "Splintered". Sadly our executive producer Clive Parsons, a veteran British film producer who made such classics as Scum and Gregory's Girl and I might add was a true gentleman, passed away shortly after completion, leaving us without a clue of how to get distribution in our own territory. So we decided to put on a little showcase of three movies over one day in our home town of Manchester and call it Grimm up North. After a successful week in London I managed to not only acquire distribution for Splintered, but also a number of movies to screen from various distributors and Grimm Up North turned out to be three crazy days of 28 movies, twelve of which were premiers, not to mention a plague of Cenobites. Although we vowed "never again" the day after the festival, there did seem to be a lot of love for it and we've been growing steadily each year.
What brings you to Cannes?
This was an extremely exciting year for us, as it was Grimm Up North's first year as a buyer at Cannes, we were looking for films to screen at the festival in October. In addition to this we have also raised the bar with our brand new distribution label Grimm Entertainment. We have partnered with Koch media in the UK and have already acquired rights to several films which we are releasing in Early October 2012. We are to release a minimum of eight movies in our first year so we were looking for movies that would play well at the festival and also have UK rights available for distribution.
So what's the ultimate goal with the festival? Do you plan on growing into a market or another Sundance?
It would be an interesting idea to grow Grimm to the stage whereby, if you produce, write, sell, buy, promote or just love to watch genre material, people can come to Manchester to do just that and get to cuddle lots of lovely northern folk, as we are very friendly in the North.
What kind of films do you like personally?
Wow my taste is so diverse, I do have a penchant for Sci-Fi, but also love to watch films from all over the world, I love films with a great story, so for me it can be any genre from ‘The Lives of Others’ to ‘Martyrs’ to ‘How to Train Your Dragon’.
How many submissions do you normally get and how do you go through them all?
This year we had over 100 submissions. We have a dedicated team of volunteers who help us view material. But essentially it comes down to Myself, Simeon Halligan who is co-director of the festival and Steve Balshaw our film programmer and founding member of Grimm who make the decisions, and if we can't all agree on a film it doesn't go in the festival.
A lot of people say the festival process is inherently political, what are your thoughts on that and do you have advice for filmmakers?
This is a very good point, running our own festival has really given us a great insight as filmmakers of how important it is to make sure either the producer or sales agent make a big noise about a film. It is essential to get it into the press and give your movie as much profile as possible. There are so many films to watch you end up being drawn to the ones listed in the trades and there starts the merry go round, with all the usual suspects being shown in all the various festivals. Whilst we at Grimm do like to have a number of festival circuit films we have seen at the markets, we do get quite excited by the submissions we get to the festival. Steve Balshaw was a big advocate of the Soska sisters' submission ‘Dead Hooker in a Trunk’ it got great coverage at Grimm and really helped to build a following for them in the UK. Similarly we hope to do the same with Ryan Levin’s 'Some Guy Who Kills People' which screened really well at last year's festival and that we will be releasing later on in the year under the Grimm label.
Did you have a "Cannes moment"?
Meeting Zack Coffman at the Estonian Drinks Party and scoffing all their chocolate which we just couldn't get enough of!
Well, there you have it. I've finally worked Cannes out of my system.

Today, we have a trailer to share. You'll find it after the jump.
At first glance, Ken Boyd (Corrigan) may seem like an average comic enthusiast, living with his mother and working to make ends meet as an underpaid, underappreciated ice cream parlor attendant. But Ken has a dirty little secret: he fantasizes about killing people. After being released from a stay in the loony bin for severe mental trauma suffered when he was beaten and tortured by a gang of high school thugs, Ken's repressed anger suddenly reaches a boiling point. He begins to hunt down his tormentors, one by one, and exacts...

Some Guy Who Kills People, is a film that’s taking everyone lucky enough to see it by surprise. Suggested to me in a conversation with Christian Burgess, after expressing my adoration for Tucker And Dale, “Some Guy” had something that other films of the kind generally lack. It had heart, and the talent to back it up. One of the major contributing factor of this, in a perfect marriage with the performances of a wonderful cast of talented actors, was the amazing script. Recently, Ryan Levin, the man responsible for the script, sat down with Jeff and myself for a conversation about the process of bringing “Some Guy” to life, and the extremely positive reception that the film has been met with. Listen to said interview below, and be on the lookout for news in regards to the DVD/Blu Ray/VOD release of the film. If you’re an iTunes user,...

I’ve started and stopped, deleted, began from scratch, it must be a year end list. I let these things stress me out far more than I should. I have a real problem with ranking films. I feel as, every film I watch, even some bad ones, are enjoyed at different levels, for different reasons. It seems wrong to me to slap an arbitrary number next to it. How do I rank my enjoyment? Especially if it’s due to different factors? Well, the answer is, I don’t. I’m going to list for you, 10 films of 2011 that I feel should be seen. Please don’t take it as an extensive list, as there are still Far too many flicks that were released at some capacity during the year that I gotten around to yet. Keep in mind that that there is no ranking involved. Movies are listed as they come to me,...

It started with a tweet. I have no idea who put said tweet in my feed, but in that feed there was a trailer for a film that sounded so vague that admittedly my curiosity was piqued. The name? Some Guy Who Kills People.
Written by Ryan Levin, directed by Jack Perez and starring Kevin Corrigan, Some Guy Who Kills People tells the story of Ken Boyd, a lonely man fresh out of the loony bin who sets out to kill those he deems responsible for his miserable life.
Using the powers of Twitter, I reached out to writer Ryan Levin and this is what happened...
Crix: Where did the idea for Sgwkp come about?
Ryan Levin: The idea came from a short film I made in 2007 called “The Fifth,” in which a group of buddies hang out, play poker and shoot the shit about their jobs. One of the guys,...

The Toronto After Dark Film Festival ran this past October 20-27, 2011, and what with the Halloween holiday and all the Afm news we've been pumping out, the results of the fest got a little bit lost in the shuffle. But we're remedying that right now with the rundown on who took home what from the 6th annual festival of new horror, sci-fi, action and cult movies.
The big winner at Toronto After Dark 2011 was the cult action film Father's Day from Winnipeg-based film collective Astron-6, which won the festival's top prize, the Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film (Gold). The Divide, the dark apocalyptic sci-fi movie from Xavier Gens (Frontiers, Hitman) won the Audience Silver, while zombie movie fans will be delighted to hear that indie undead buddy comedy Deadheads (from the Pierce Brothers) was given the Audience Choice 3rd Place Prize, Bronze.

Some Guy Who Kills People
Directed by Jack Perez
2011, USA, 97 minutes
Black comedies are about things that most people don’t find funny. Torturous high school bullying. Meeting the eleven-year-old child you didn’t know you had. Suicidal thoughts and the overbearing mothers who mock them. Some Guy Who Kills People, the exceptional new black comedy by director Jack Perez and executive producer John Landis, has all this and more. Lots more. Also murder. Lots of murder.
This movie is carried by off-kilter leading man Kevin Corrigan (Pineapple Express, Fringe). His depressed, laconic turn as Ken Boyd, a thirty-five year old drudge recently released from a mental institution, is a joy to watch. A dirty, guilty joy. It works because Boyd’s surrounded by so many wonderful characters, amongst them his acerbic mother (Karen Black, House of 1000 Corpses), his precocious preteen daughter (Ariel Gade, Dark Water), and the irreverent town sheriff (Barry Bostiwick,...

More than halfway through October now, and it's high time for a followup to the first "Scary Monsters" roundup of the year, the one that pointed to several ongoing month-long cinephilic celebrations of Halloween. Before taking a look at a few recent and upcoming releases, let's begin with a list, namely, Glenn Kenny's at MSN Movies, the "50 Scariest Movies of All Time." At Some Came Running, Glenn kicks himself for forgetting to include Erle C Kenton's Island of Lost Souls (1932) with Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi: "In my defense, I've long held that it's not a real 'greatest' list unless it complains at least one completely bone-headed and inexcusable omission, and the omission of Souls, I would say, constitutes a particularly distinguished instance of such." Update: At Criterion's Current, Susan Arosteguy lists "10 Things I Learned" about Souls — factoids, some odd, some nifty, some a little spooky. Update, 10/21:...

Director: Jack Perez Writer: Ryan Levin Starring: Kevin Corrigan, Barry Bostwick, Karen Black, Leo Fitzpatrick, Ariel Gade, Lucy Davis, Eric Price, Lou Beatty Jr. Will Kevin Corrigan -- the indie film darling who was rivaled only by Steve Buscemi in his near-infinite number of quirky supporting roles clocked in during the 1990s -- ever live down "that ugly guy" (Walking and Talking) moniker? Probably not -- because as Some Guy Who Kills People's Ken, Corrigan becomes one of the ugliest characters of them all. A 34-year old, socially awkward, sad-sack loser -- oh, and former mental patient -- Ken works at a local ice cream parlor and lives with his disapproving mom (Karen Black). Otherwise, Ken just keeps to himself and sketches fantastical images of himself murdering the high school bullies who tortured him as a teenager, made him suicidal and essentially got him away in the loony bin for god knows how long.

The temptation is always there to create contacts in writers, directors, and the like that will inevitably skew your perception of their films. To put it simply, it is difficult to slam a movie when you come to find out that the cast and crew who created it are incredibly nice and grounded people. So when I had the pleasure of having a...

The official announcement for the last wave of films screening at this year’s After Dark Film Festival was made last tonight on Canada’s Space Channel. Making the list is the new film by Jason Trost titled Vs. about, “four Super Heroes who find themselves abducted by their Arch Nemesis and are forced to compete in a series of challenges in order to save an abandoned town full of kidnapped innocent civilians”. I’ve heard great things about this film from some lucky few who have already seen it, and considering I was a huge fan of the director’s previous film, The Fp, Vs. is at the top of my list of things to see. Also announced is Mike Flanagan’s Absentia, which we raved about, a while back on episode 25 of the Sordid Cinema podcast. Some Guy Who Kills People also make the cut. I highly recommend...

As Fantasia rings in its 15th anniversary, they are celebrating the founding fathers of Quebec’s genre cinema heritage — the legendary producing team of John Dunning and André Link a.k.a. the Roger Cormans of Canada. The duo regularly took risks supporting exciting new talent, kickstarting the careers of some of Canada’s greatest filmmakers such as David Cronenberg, Denys Arcand, Ivan Reitman, Denis Héroux, George Mihalka, Claude Jutra, Jean-Claude Lord, Don Cormody and Larry Kent, to name a few. Fantasia will be screening a ton of old Canuxploitation films for free throughout the fest, but there are also a number of promising Canadian features set to premiere. Below is a list of Canadian films I look forward to with one addition that I can guarantee, is a must see.

There's a whole lot going on with Jack Perez's Some Guy Who Kills People, a horror-comedy about a lonely, small-town loser who sets out to kill each of the men he deems responsible for his miserable life. Writer/producer Ryan Levin wrote us to reveal that the film will be playing PiFan, Fantasia Fest, Fantaspoa and RioFan, and has asked for support via Facebook and Twitter. In addition, Levin took some time out of his busy schedule and appeared on a pair of podcasts, the Rex Sikes Movie Beat and on Blog Talk Radio. There he discusses the process of getting the money, casting, shooting the movie and now getting the movie out there. We scored some brand new stills, all of which can be found inside.

The title of Some Guy Who Kills People suggests an anonymous villain, but it’s the achievement of director Jack Perez and writer/producer Ryan Levin that the film showcases one of the more distinctive antiheroes in recent serial-killer cinema. Ken Boyd (Kevin Corrigan) may be one of those people whom life barely seems to notice—when it’s not beating him down—but he’s bound to make an impression on audiences.

The Jack Perez directed Some Guy Who Kills People dropped a trailer today and it looks bloody hilarious. Not surprising when you've got John Landis executive producing the film. The script, from Ryan Levin, follows Ken Boyd (Kevin Corrigan), a man just released from the loony bin, who decides to kill the people he thinks are responsible for his miserable life....
The cast also includes Karen black, Barry Bostwick, Lucy Davis, Ariel Gade and Leo Fitzpatrick. Black comedy is the theme of this one so don't let the first bit of the trailer fool you. The blood and the body parts start flying and it seems to fit into that same tone as the Landis directed American Werewolf In London.
Perez previously directed Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus (which is a good or bad thing depending on who you ask) and Some Guy Who Kills People looks like it's taking black comedy to its heights.

Today we exclusively learned that Jack Perez (Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, Wild Things 2) will be getting behind the camera to bring Ryan Levin's ("Scrubs", I'm In The Band, The Fifth -- a short film that screened at over 60 film festivals worldwide, winning Best Short Film at Fantasia Fest, Fantastic Fest, Dead by Dawn and Dragon*Con) screenplay to life. In addition, we got more details, which sound pretty kickass: "The film is a horror-comedy about a lonely, small-town loser who sets out to kill each of the men he deems responsible for his miserable life." Shooting begins mid-January. Michael Wormser & Micah Goldman (Penance, Fox pilot "Tease") and Ryan Levin all produce.

Want to talk about an unlikely trio to get together to make a film? Try this one on for size ... a writer who's penned an episode of a medical TV comedy, a director who's straight out of The Asylum, and a prolific genre director now serving as producer on a film with a title so wacky you can't help but want to see it. Interested yet? We are.
John Landis will be producing the new flick, Some Guy Who Kills People, about a quiet town that is uprooted by a series of murders committed by someone bent on revenge.
While details are pretty lean right now other than that the film is casting for a January shoot, Shock Till You Drop has learned that handling the writing duties will be Ryan Levin, who directed a short film called Tour de Fright and penned an episode of "Scrubs", and in the...

Production begins early next year on Some Guy Who Kills People and the trio behind this one is eclectic. On writing duties is Ryan Levin, who directed a short film called Tour de Fright and penned an episode of Scrubs (on which he served as a P.A.). Then you've got Jack Perez in the director's chair. He gave us Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and Wild Things 2 . On top of it all, there's John Landis ( An American Werewolf in London ) producing. What's it about? A quiet town is uprooted by a series of murders committed by someone bent on revenge. Sounds rather standard, but the title hints at a film with possible bite to it. Fingers crossed.

Remember the short The Fifth about a poker game between some pretty rough characters? We sure do. It was dark. It was witty. It was very well acted. We loved it.
Now his series about a vulgar stoat who's paid his dues in the joint, Benny, Escaped Convict, has been picked up by Comedy Central. We think you'll like it, even though it makes us blush like a ladies book club confronted with the secretions of an excited ermine.
Here it is, enjoy.
Plus here's your chance to become friends with a vulgar stoat via Facebook.
