Rob Zombie's 2012 film "The Lords of Salem" may be the filmmaker's best. In it, Sheri Moon plays Heidi, a woman living in Salem, Ma, and recovering from drug addiction. She works as a soft-spoken DJ at the local radio station with Ken Foree and Jeff Daniel Phillips. When they play a mysterious rock record on their show — a record that only plays three scary, deep notes over and over — it awakens something inside Heidi. She begins having surreal visions of Satan. The visions are also, perhaps, being encouraged by a trio of women who regularly drink wine and converse loudly in her apartment building.
Eventually, it will be revealed that the record was a tool by the town's local Satanists (!) used to hypnotize the town's women into remembering their former lives as the woman tortured and killed in Salem generations ago. Satan, then, becomes a tool for feminist vengeance.

With five episodes of season 12 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” tucked away, tensions continued to mount between New York’s confident queen Brita and Georgia’s small town up-and-comer Aiden Zhane. Last week, Aiden and Brita were scene partners in a dramatic acting challenge, but Aiden scored among the tops of the week while Brita fell into the bottom of the pack for the third straight week and battled in the Lip Sync for Your Life for the second time. In that battle she bested France’s Nicky Doll, sending the fashionista home.
This week, stars of “Mean Girls” Daniel Franzese and Jonathan Bennett join RuPaul Charles on the set of the annual comedy challenge “Snatch Game,” testing the queens’ ability to inhabit the personas of celebrities and to share banter and quick wit with Ru.

Friday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race was a long time coming — for several reasons. Not only did it begin with Snatch Game, easily the show’s most popular recurring challenge, but it also ended with a long-awaited battle between two rival queens.
Spoiler alert: Those queens were Aiden Zhane and Brita, and their conflict started way before they hit the runway. While reacting to Nicky Doll’s elimination in the workroom, Brita said she was “shook” to find herself in the bottom, then asked how Aiden managed to be safe when the two were basically partners in the Gay’s Anatomy challenge.

The Snatch Game finally arrives on Friday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race (VH1, 8/7c), but before the queens can focus on their next challenge, they still have some old drama to hash out.
“I was shook, honestly,” Brita tells the girls of her near-elimination. “I don’t know why I was in the bottom, and I don’t know why my scene partner wasn’t with me. Why does she get a free escape when all of our stuff was together?” (Wait, Brita is complaining about Aiden Zhane again? Color. Me. Surprised.)

Olive Films has released a Blu-ray edition of the little-remembered and rarely seen 1979 film "The Outsider", a powerful drama directed by Tony Luraschi , who seemingly had a bright career but who, instead seems to have fallen into obscurity. This seems to be one of only two films he was ever credited with. The reasons for this remain unclear, given the fact that "The Outsider" is a powerful film that has retained its bite over the decades. One can only wonder why a work of such passion could not have inspired its director to continue to direct movies, although perhaps fate prevented him from doing so. (If any readers has any information to share about this, please let us know.) The film is set in Northern Ireland during the height of "The Troubles", that seemingly endless period of time when nation was torn apart by state of virtual civil was.

It goes without saying that the 1970s cannot be recounted without examining certain cultural phenomena. The Godfather and star Wars certainly helped redefine filmmaking and both had major impact on pop culture. But then there was the growth of cult cinema, which endures to this day, and was sparked by the arrival of a 20th Century Fox flop, a failed adaptation of a British stage play that gained some cred when it moved to Los Angeles. Little did anyone suspect that when New York’s Waverly theater began screening The Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight, it would engage a generation.
I had heard of it soon after the screenings began but didn’t see it for the first time until my college roommate showed it in our dorm room so I could see and hear it for myself before it screened on campus with complete audience participation. I was taught which lines to repeat,...

Are you ready for a time warp? It has been 40 years since The Rocky Horror Picture Show — 40 years of midnight screenings, fistfuls of rice, rubber gloves, fishnet stockings, and yelling "Asshole!" at the screen. To celebrate, EW brought five of the cast members together for a photo shoot, including Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn, and Meatloaf. It's astounding: Time is fleeting.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Directed by Jim Sharman
Screenplay by Richard O’Brien and Jim Sharman
1975, USA
The Rocky Horror Picture Show isn’t the first midnight-cult-classic, but the beautiful, weird and dark musical is without a doubt, the most famous. The film celebrates its 40th anniversary this week and so what better time to add it to my list of greatest cult films.
For the unfamiliar, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the film adaptation of a popular musical stage production composed and written by Richard O’Brien, a struggling actor at the time who was best known for his performances in such musicals as Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. For O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Picture Show was an homage to drive-in double features and science fiction B-movies of the fifties, and ironically, the film itself went on to become the ultimate midnight movie. Trhps opened Sept.

Happy 2014 Everyone! Looking back, I thought 2013 was an exceptional year for horror, especially for independent genre fare that ended making up most of my favorite films over the last 12 months. In fact, 2013 ended up being so good, even a number of remakes that came out this year managed to be as strong as their original horror peers and that’s pretty damn impressive.
Here’s a look at some of my very favorite things that happened in horror along the way during 2013:
John Dies at the End:
I’d been waiting patiently to see Don Coscarelli’s John Dies at the End ever since I chatted him up about the project at SXSW 2012. Thankfully, the film didn’t disappoint at all when it was released last January. Wonderfully weird and oddly heartfelt, no one has quite mastered the art of the unexpected like Coscarelli has throughout his career...

I really had not planned to write a review about Rob Zombie’s latest endeavor “The Lords of Salem”. The primary reason simply being that the internet just plain didn’t need another review of this film residing out there in cyberspace. Call it “saturating the market” if you will, me writing about something slightly obscure, new or old would have more than likely served the reader better. Here I am though, so let’s get to it.
I guess I should elaborate on the reason I ended up here. I’ve read only one review that was somewhat favorable about this film. The rest offered no hope of Mr. Zombie regaining his former greatness as the man that would save mainstream horror by giving it all the grime, violence, and homages to vintage films that just could not be found in any similar ilk anywhere else.

Rob Zombie's latest piece of satanic panic trippyness, The Lords of Salem, is officially laying its curse on Blu-ray and DVD here in the United States, and we've got the first details for you right here!
From the Press Release
Anchor Bay Films has announced that Rob Zombie’s frightening new film, The Lords Of Salem, will arrive on Blu-ray Combo Pack with an UltraViolet Digital Copy and DVD on Tuesday, September 3, 2013.
From the singular mind of horror maestro Rob Zombie comes a chilling plunge into a nightmare world where evil runs in the blood. The Lords Of Salem tells the tale of Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie), a radio station DJ living in Salem, Massachusetts, who receives a strange wooden box containing a record, a “gift from the Lords.” Heidi listens, and the bizarre sounds within the grooves immediately trigger flashbacks of the town’s violent past. Is Heidi going mad,...

The Lords of Salem received a limited theatrical release at the end of April, but we know that many horror fans didn’t have a chance to catch it before the movie left theaters. We now have word that Anchor Bay will be giving The Lords of Salem a Blu-ray and DVD release in September.
According to Blu-ray.com, the movie will be available on September 3rd. Special features haven’t been revealed at this time, but we’re hoping for an unrated cut of the movie and director commentary. This is an early release announcement, so we should have cover art and a list of bonus features next month.

Now that The Lords of Salem has opened in select theaters nationwide and reviews have begun rolling in, the question on many viewers' minds is: "What exactly was Rob Zombie thinking?"
The film has polarized Zombie's usual audience; it relies heavily on influence from European horror cinema and strange, disjointed visuals, making it feel in some places more like a feature-length music video than a coherent story, and those expecting a return to House of 1000 Corpses from the musician-turned-filmmaker may be in for a surprise. But what does Rob himself have to say about the film's strangeness? Planet Fury had a chance to sit down with him at SXSW 2013 and gain a little insight from the man behind the madness.

Rob Zombie's tale of DJs unwittingly waking the dead in modern-day Salem is frighteningly good
The best movie to date by the heavy-metal musician turned horror-flick director Rob Zombie (né Robert Bartleh Cummings), The Lords of Salem is a cross between two Hollywood movies made by European directors. They are René Clair's 1942 comedy I Married a Witch starring Veronica Lake as the New England witch who returns 300 years later to haunt a descendant of the 17th-century puritan who sent her to the stake, and Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby, where a New York coven assists Satan in impregnating a young woman. The atmospheric setting is present-day Salem, and the main characters work for a provocative radio station whose DJs are tricked into playing a bizarre disc that awakens the dead and lures the living to a defunct local theatre for a midnight rave. Bruce Davison brings charm to...

Old naked ladies, rivers of blood, locked rooms. Where have we seen all of these things before? The Shining of course. Guess who else has seen The Shining? Rob Zombie, of course. He’s seen The Shining and he really liked it, so he put a load of things from The Shining in his new film. He’s seen his wife’s bum too. He really liked it, so he put his wife’s bum in his new film as well. His new film is called The Lords of Salem. I saw it. I didn’t really like it.
Rob Zombie’s fourth directorial effort proceeds in a similar way to that paragraph. It’s repetitious, it’s filled with references and if you just imagine that all of those full stops are clichéd bits of exposition, you’re pretty much there. As the title suggests ‘The Lords of Salem...

Let's give Rob and Sheri Moon Zombie, the Sonny and Cher of sadomasochistic horror, the benefit of the doubt and assume they set out to make "The Lords of Salem" some sort of instant bad cult film about witches.
That still doesn't excuse how dull this one is, how slowly those dull things happen, how the heavy metal rocker-turned-horror director Rob seems to have forgotten how to make even his simplest sand jolts pay off.
And it doesn't explain how Sheri could have made as many of these movies with her husband (the high mileage shows in her tattoos) and not learned a damned thing about acting. Sleeping nude in the opening scene, yes. She's got that down. And sleeping with her jammies all bunched up down her thighs.
But from the moment her character, Heidi the recovering addict late-night DJ, stands in front of a neon cross, holding her...

Title: The Lords of Salem Director: Rob Zombie Starring: Sheri Moon Zombie, Bruce Davison, Ken Foree, Patricia Quinn, Dee Wallace, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Maria Conchita Alonso, Judy Geeson, Meg Foster, Richard Fancy, Sid Haig Rocker-turned-writer-director Rob Zombie has, in a fairly interesting and definitely surprising manner, carved out a certain multi-media genre niche for himself, spinning off horrific visions both original (“The Devil’s Rejects”) and adapted (his “Halloween” remakes). His latest film in some ways seems like a no-brainer, the type of easy-fit movie Zombie (who’s devoted to to making a period piece hockey tale as his next film) could churn out every 18 months or so if he desired. Having essentially emasculated one of cinema’s greatest bogeymen by giving Michael Myers a troubled back story in his Halloween remakes, you’d be forgiven for not expecting too much from Rob Zombie’s The Lords Of Salem. Usually more interested in cribbing over-the-top theatrical aesthetics from his favourite horror movies and exercising a visual style and tone from Seventies exploitation flicks, The Lords Of Salem sees horror’s greatest magpie deliver a surprisingly restrained, atmospheric little creepshow that genuinely chills, building a growing sense of spooky disquiet right up until its final act where sense and subtlety go straight out of the window and Rob has his wife ride a goat (nowhere near as erotic as it sounds or should be).

New Lords Of Salem movie delivered the worst theatrical experience ever. Anchor Bay Films released their new Rob Zombie horror/thriller flick "The Lords Of Salem" movie into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and wish that I never did. It was the most horrible theatrical experience of my life. It bored me to death. I can't remember how many times a film had me dozing off to sleep for a lack of plot richness. The movie stars: Sheri Moon Zombie, Bruce Davidson, Jeffrey Daniel Phillips, Ken Foree, Patricia Quinn, Dee Wallace, Maria Conchita Alonso, Judy Gleeson, Meg Foster, and Griffin Boice. The new flick told the tale of Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie), a radio station DJ living in Salem, Massachusetts along with two guys , named Whitey and Munster, and they called themselves the ‘Big H Radio Team’. Eventually, mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives for Heidi,...

In a free-wheeling and candid conversation, Rob discusses his fascination with the roots of classic horror film, describes how this latest effort departs from the worlds of terror he's created for such films as The Devil's Rejects and Halloween, and talks about the difficulties he encountered translating this newest vision to screen.

Burn, Witch, Burn: Zombie Conquers His Cross to Bear
Don’t be so sure of what to expect when walking into Rob Zombie’s latest feature, The Lords of Salem, at once a familiar homage to genre classics past at the same time it’s building an invasively sordid atmosphere all its own. Zombie fans may very well be disappointed, especially if you find yourself among the many champions of the churlishly exploitational elements of some of his more prized entries, like 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects (where Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird at least gets used for appropriate effect, a track ill abused in fare by Robert Zemeckis and Cameron Crowe), as Zombie turns in a slower paced and decidedly mature effort that, gloriously, features one of the grandest unforgettable finales in a film of its nature.

At age 31, Cinematographer Brandon Trost is still considered a youngster in a racket that consists mostly of older men with flowing gray hair and/or unkempt artistic temperaments.
With over 70 titles on IMDb, the young cinematographer has paid more than his share of dues, working on gonzo film sets with gonzo talent (Crank: High Voltage, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance). On each film, or at least once he climbed out of the indie trenches with the Crank sequel, Trost has added his own distinctive look to each film he has touched, regardless of the quality of source material. With the upcoming Townies and This Is the End, Trost is quickly becoming the go-to guy in Hollywood for cream of the crop talent in multiple genres, forging lasting friendships with directors and actors alike. However, Box Office Mojo mentions that the move will be playing on 300 screens next weekend, and we’ve previously been told to expect the movie to screen in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Dallas, Miami, Philadelphia, Houston, and Washington DC.
If you live in the UK, The Lords of Salem is getting a limited theatrical release on April 26th, with a DVD release on April 29th. There is no word yet on the Blu-ray/DVD release in the Us, but hopefully we’ll have news later this month.

Film in Chicago is booming, generating a record $184 million in spending in 2012, Gov. Pat Quinn said Friday on the set of “Divergent,” the largest feature film ever to be shot in the state.
“We have a world-class sound stage and studio right here. One of the very best in the United States, indeed the world,” Quinn said at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, 2621 W. 15th Place.
The film, starring Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet, began filming at Cinespace in early April. The production is expected to spend more than $30 million in Illinois and create 1,000 jobs.
In 2011, Quinn signed a 10-year extension of the Illinois Film Tax Credit, which gives tax breaks to production companies that film in the state.
