Mick Mars’ exit from Mötley Crüe and retirement from touring was unceremonious and contentious, resulting in legal drama and a highly publicized back-and-forth spat between the guitarist and his former bandmates.
But it would all be water under the bridge — for Mars at least — if the Crüe still wanted to write songs with their longtime axeman.
In a new interview, Mars was surprisingly forthcoming about the hypothetical opportunity to work with his old band in a creative capacity again.
“Well, it took me 40 years ’cause Mötley was priority… and now that I’m retired, I’m just me,” Mars told Audacy Check In when asked why it took him four decades to make his first solo album. “I mean, if Mötley wanted me to write songs with them again, of course I would… But right now, I’m just me, so I’m writing, and it’s not Mötley, and...

Despite his contentious split from his longtime band Mötley Crüe, guitarist Mick Mars has nothing but kind words to say about the man who replaced him.
In a new interview with Guitar World, Mars went as far as to say that the Crüe made a “very wise choice” in selecting longtime Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 for the job. The latter has been a seamless fit in the group after being announced as Mars’ replacement shortly after Mars declared he was retiring from touring with the band.
“Well, I’ve never disliked John, I’ve always liked him and still do,” said Mars. “He’s been a really good friend of mine for a long time. So I think they’ve made a very, very wise choice with John.”
Mars didn’t delve into his drama with Mötley Crüe, which, has included some nasty exchanges between the band’s camp and the guitarist.

Mick Mars, the founding and former guitarist of Mötley Crüe, has announced his debut solo album, The Other Side of Mars, arriving February 23rd. The video for “Loyal to the Lie,” the lead single from the LP, can be streamed now.
“When it comes to my playing, there’s the Mötley side and the Mars side,” the guitarist said of his upcoming album, and “Loyal to the Lie” showcases the latter.
Crüe fans might be taken aback by the song’s more alt-metal/industrial slant, with singer Jacob Bunton providing impassioned vocals over Mars’ axework — which sounds as sharp and technically proficient as ever. While the Mötley Crüe camp raised questions about Mars’ physical ability to play amid the nasty exchanges that followed Mars’ retirement from touring with the band, this song testifies to the fact that he’s still got it.

Blondshell’s self-titled era isn’t over yet. Come October 6th, Sabrina Teitelbaum will issue a digital deluxe edition of her debut full length, which she’s previewed with the new song “Street Rat.” Check it out below.
Originally released in April, Blondshell channeled the indie rock of the 1990s with modern flourishes courtesy of producer Yves Rothman. The promising LP featured “Salad,” the best song of 2023 (so far), and earned Teitelbaum the chance to open up for Liz Phair on her upcoming tour.
The deluxe edition expands Blondshell from nine tracks to 14, featuring the new songs “Street Rat,” “Tarmac 2,” and “It Wasn’t Love,” as well as a demo version of “Kiss City” and the previously released standalone single “Cartoon Earthquake.” Today’s melancholy offering features über fuzzed out guitar as the artist realizes she probably has a problem with a substance. “Wouldn’t feed that to a street rat,...

Pop a bottle of Prosecco and get ready to shake your money-maker because Lionsgate is partnering with STX to develop scripted TV series inspired by Jennifer Lopez’s Hustlers and the raunchy 2016 comedy Bad Moms. The plan to put both projects into development is part of a new distribution deal between STXfilms and Lionsgate, the companies announced on Wednesday.
The Hustlers and Bad Moms TV series projects are in the early stages of development, and there is no word if the original cast or crew members will return for the episodic versions of either property.
Released in 2016, Bad Moms stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn as three overworked and under-appreciated moms pushed beyond their limits. After succumbing to exhaustion, they ditch their conventional responsibilities for a jolt of long-overdue freedom, fun, and comedic self-indulgence. A sequel, A Bad Moms Christmas, was released in 2017. Both movies were received well by audiences,...

Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Expect your Halloween party to be aswim in Henry Fool costumes.
Speaking of: there’s a one-month headstart on seasonal programming with the 13-film “High School Horror”––most notable perhaps being a streaming premiere for the uncut version of Suspiria, plus the rare opportunity to see a Robert Rodriguez movie on the Criterion Channel––and a retrospective of Hong Kong vampire movies. A retrospective of ’70s car movies offer chills and thrills of a different sort

Filmmakers who look up to Martin Scorsese for his work just got another lesson in how to gracefully respond to a negative review. In a stirring essay for The Times Literary Supplement, the publisher of a mixed “Silence” review that ran back in January, the renowned director defends cinema as commensurate with the great works of literature, music, and art.

Cinephiles may ask themselves if such a fervent response is even needed, especially at a time when one is more likely to read an impassioned defense of television’s artistic merit. Tls, after all, is one of the oldest and most prestigious literary magazines in the world. It stands to reason that their film critic would hold literature in higher esteem than cinema. But Scorsese is not taking it anymore. He writes:

“Are you hiring actors to play wrestlers, or are we the wrestlers?” a confused Alison Brie asks in the first (slightly Nsfw) trailer for Netflix’s upcoming Glow.
The answer? “Yes.”
The series, a fictionalized behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the kitschy television series called Glow (aka Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling), follows Brie’s Ruth, a struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles whose last-ditch attempt to land a role — any role — brings her to a casting call for “unconventional” women. She soon realizes she’s auditioning for a female version of the highly popular World Wrestling Federation, led by...

If there was one thing missing from Ridley Scott’s “The Martian,” it was the true, visceral experience of being right there on the red planet as Matt Damon’s Mark Watney struggled to make his way home to Earth. Thanks to the magic of virtual reality, that’s no longer a concern. Now you too can can trapped on a distant planet with little — if any! — hope of returning to only other world you’ve ever known.
Fox has today announced the creation of “The Martian: Vr Experience,” a new interactive experience that allows its viewers to participate “from astronaut Mark Watney’s perspective, performing tasks that will facilitate his chances for survival. Viewers can fly onto the surface of Mars, steer at zero gravity through space, drive a rover navigating over craters and experience key scenes from the hit film in a 360-degree virtual reality environment.” Executive...

Followers of this column are about to do a double take. They will question my sanity, my constitution, and whether I’m now a pod-person. But, heed my words, for they are true.
I traveled a long and hard road from my suburban home 45 minutes north to a different suburb so that I could make a transaction I’d honestly figured I wouldn’t make for years to come. After giving up mainstream comics (and weekly comic purchases) for two years, I handed over three bucks and picked up DC Universe Rebirth.
And I loved it.
Stop laughing at me.
In all the lead up to the big epic oh my Rao event I may have said a few … ahem… embittered words over the whole announcement. And to be fair, a lot of my points will remain valid in spite of my newfound like of Geoff Johns’ epic apology for...

Twenty years ago this week, four teenage girls dabbled in magic powers and unleashed forces more powerful than they could have imagined. We're not just talking about the plot of "The Craft" (released on May 3, 1996), but also the wave it launched of pretty-young-magical-gal stories on the big and small screens (from "Practical Magic" to "Charmed").
For all its influence and popularity, there's still much you may not know about "The Craft." Here are some of the secrets behind the beloved teen-witch cautionary tale.
1. Star Robin Tunney (center), who plays Sarah, wore a wig throughout the film, having recently shaved her head for her role in "Empire Records."
2. How did director Andrew Fleming do so well in understanding the mindset of his teen-girl heroines -- not only in "The Craft," but also in "Dick" and "Nancy Drew"? According to Fleming, "Dick" co-star Michelle Williams figured out the answer. "Michelle said that,...

This year during SXSW in Austin, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez will unveil an amazing collection of art from the legendary Frank Frazetta, whose work not only defined the look of a number of properties — including Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan and John Carter of Mars series — it also influenced a number of wonderful projects, from The Legend of Zelda to He-Man. Rodriguez, a Frazetta superman himself, is set to direct a remake of Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi’s Ice and Fire. This art show, which will be available to anyone (not just SXSW badge holders) will show off a number of original pieces from Frazetta alongside Frank Miller, Drew Struzan and Sebastian Kruger. To call it a star-studded affair fails to show proper reverence. It’s a legend-studded affair. Information about the show can be found above. From early Bond to 21st century sci-fi, here's Ryan's pick of 11 unforgettable villain pairings from action cinema history...
You're generally lucky if a movie has one genuinely great villain in it, let alone two. This is probably because creating a villain takes great acting and writing - it's one thing to create a preening character who stomps around a story doing unpleasant things, but creating a villain who's three-dimensional, witty, scary and above all memorable requires considerable skill.
Every so often, a movie comes along which gives us not one, but two classic villains, with the personality of one complementing the other. A familiar dynamic was once laid out by Steven Spielberg: one is smart and eloquent , while the other is the tougher, more violent of the pair. It's a template that we've seen time and again in cinema, but it's only occasionally that both characters leap from the screen.

I have a sneaking suspicion that thousands of American Horror Story fans are going to run out this morning and go to Jo-Ann Fabric, Michael’s Craft Store, and whatever shoe store is next to them in the mini-mall so that they can buy some lace, hot-glue-gun it to a mask, and then shine their knee-high boots. It’s an instant Elsa Mars costume that is far more flattering than her Life on Mars ensemble we’ve grown accustomed to.Alright, I have to give it to American Horror Story because this is the episode where it finally got good (but I’m going to leave some caveats at the end). The Edward Mordrake device of the two-headed Wes Bentley that rolled in so slowly like a glowing green mist last episode really sprung to life in part two of this Halloween double-feature. Based on the premiere of Freak Show, Jessica Lange wasn’t just towing the company line when she said that this season of American Horror Story could well be its best yet. The first hour — which took us to Jupiter, Fla., in 1952 to ask who really are the “Monsters Among Us,” the freaks or those who misjudge them? — was stylish, shocking and irresistibly over the (big) top!

Tod Browning's 1932 horror film Freaks is a bonafide classic thanks in no small part to Browning's brilliant use of “us versus them.” On one side, you have the outwardly terrifying freaks and on the other side the so-called “normal” folks as represented by Cleopatra and Hercules. The freaks look scary, but deep down inside, they're the good people. They accept Cleopatra because Hans loves her, but when Cleopatra and Hercules betray the trust of the sideshow folks, the freaks protect their own in one of the most terrifying sequences in movie history. Terrifying yes, but also well-deserved in the end, as Cleopatra and Hercules prove themselves to be despicable.

I have a curious habit, maybe you have it too, if you are a real movie geek, film fan, cinema addict, what have you.
A certain number of movies that I have seen and loved with all my heart were losers at the box office or were mercilessly slammed by critics, usually both. This doesn’t happen all the time, mind you. I know a bad movie when I see one. But several times I have seen a movie on opening day and loved it so much I was sure it would be a big hit and be loved by critics and film goers, nope, not all the time.
Here then is my own personal and highly eccentric top ten list, with some honorable mentions, of movies that lost out, yet I love them still, many of them desperately, hysterically, madly do I love these films, well anyway… let me tell you about it.

Awards shortlist, and nestled among their choices for Best Video, Best Live Band and Best British Band are some film and TV nominations. As for TV, some familiar names cropped up including Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones, Orange Is The New Black, True Detective and The Walking Dead. The awards themselves will be handed out on June 12 at London’s Troxy, with Blitz Kids, 30 Seconds To Mars, My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold, You Me At Six, Baby Godzilla, Paramore, Green Day, Metallica, and Iron Maiden amongst the other nominees for what promises...

Sammo Hung is a legend in the Kung Fu movie world and rightly so, starring and directing some of the greatest Kung Fu movies in the genre. Sammo as been acting since a some child during his days at the Peking Opera school, we later seen him taking on Bruce Lee at the beginning of the classic Enter The Dragon.
So i wanted to do a run down of my favorite Sammo Hung classics, kung fu style.
Warriors Two (1978)
Starring:Casanova Wong, Leung Kar Yan, Fung Hak On, Lau Kar Wing
Verdict:One of the best wing chun movies ever made, Sammo really was on top of his game in terms of choreography. Casanova Wong is fantastic as usual with his kicking ability, Fung Hak On plays a fierce villain and Leung Kar Yan is in fine fighting form.

Resurrection is germane not only to the story of Frankenweenie but also Tim Burton’s career as an endearing cinematic oddball. With his latest foray into stop-motion animation, Burton has revisited the story that started his career, showing more focus and care than we’ve seen from the man in years. But what’s even more special about this cinematic return to form is the fact that all this newfound vitality has rubbed off on Burton’s own musical Igor, Danny Elfman, and I’m happy to say that this is one of the composer’s best efforts in quite some time.
I should say that this isn’t so much a career reanimation for Elfman as it was for Burton. While I’d call Burton’s previous two films grave missteps, I don’t know that I’d say the same about their scores. Elfman always delivers in one way or another,...

Chicago – With Emmy nominations coming out this week and the cast appearing at San Diego Comic-Con last week, CBS’s mega-hit “The Big Bang Theory” has been in the press more often than it typically is in the middle of its off-season. Add to this bizarre mini-wave of publicity the fact that Warner Bros. has corrected an oversight and recently released the first two seasons of the Emmy winner on Blu-ray, having previously been available only on DVD (the 3rd and 4th seasons were released on Blu-ray already). Both sets are light on special features but offer multiple viewing options (Blu-ray, DVD, Ultraviolet), which should make Leonard & Sheldon addicts very happy.

Harold And Maude (Criterion) Hal Ashby’s masterpiece of black humor centers on a wealthy young man (Bud Cort) who’s obsessed with death and the septuagenarian (Ruth Gordon) with whom he finds true love. As unabashedly romantic as it is quirky, with Cat Stevens supplying one of the great film scores of all-time. Fine support from Vivian Pickles, Cyril Cusack, Charles Tyner, and Ellen Geer. Fine screenplay by Colin Higgins. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Hal Ashby biographer Nick Dawson, producer Charles Mulvehill; Illustrated audio excerpts from seminars by Ashby and Higgins; Interview with Cat Stevens. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 stereo.
In Darkness (Sony) Agnieszka Holland’s Ww II epic tells the true story of a sewer worker and petty thief in Nazi-occupied Poland who single-handedly helped hide a group of Jews in the city’s labyrinthine sewer system for the duration of the war.

The Flick:
Before seeing Mars Needs Moms I had never read any of Berkeley Breathed’s books, but now I’m going to make it a point to pick all of them up so that I can read them to my children. Mars Needs Moms has a sense of wonder and enlightenment that is important for the development of young minds.
All children fight with their parents. It’s a common thread that links all of human kind together. Parents are there to make their children’s lives difficult. Clean your room, throw the trash, don’t fight with your sister. All examples of the difficult phrases parents use to help transition their children into adult hood. Also, evidently the type of phrases Martians use to pick a mother to abduct in order to harvest her maternal instincts. Basically, Milo (Seth Green) has a fight with his Mom (Joan Cusack...

Mars Needs Moms starts out at a run, and never lets up until you're already on Mars and far too involved to let it go. It would be nice if a lot more movies had the self-assurance to reel you in first, and let you figure things out later, rather than spelling everything out before anything happens. Funny, it's the kid movie that has this much respect for its audiences.
Young Milo has had his mother abducted by aliens, and being the brave and foolish lad that he is, he's chased them down to the ship, where he is accidentally snatched and brought along for the ride. Upon arrival, Milo is bagged, tagged, and put into storage, but he is soon rescued by Gribble, an adult human who is inexplicably living in the bowels of Mars' apparently planet-scale trash heap.

Mars Needs Moms might go down in history as the biggest bomb of 2011. With a budget of $150 million and a box-office gross of $21 million, it’s definitely one of Disney’s worst investments in recent years. So, the studio has to have very high hopes for the animated movie’s DVD and Blu-ray release. According to Amazon, Mars Needs Moms will be on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on Aug. 9.
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment hasn’t released the official details for the disc release yet, but from what Amazon has listed, it looks like the family film will be getting a rollout similar to Disney’s more successful animation this year, Gnomeo & Juliet, which is also coming out in three disc sets. Gnomeo will be getting a decent amount of special features, and we’re guessing Mars will too. Update: Disney has confirmed the date. Scroll down for special features.

Julius Ceasar was supposedly warned that something bad would happen to him prior to or on
"the Ides of March" -- aka March 15, an ancient Roman term believed to have heralded a new moon and dedicated to the god Mars. Hence William Shakespeare's whole "Beware the Ides of March" line in the play "Julius Ceasar." Turns out it was good, if useless, advice. On March 15, 44 B.C., the Roman ruler was stabbed 23 times in the Roman senate.
In case you don't remember, here's a reasonable facsimile from HBO's awesome, yet sadly gone, drama "Rome":
For George Clooney, however, "Ides of March" -- the movie he's directing and starring in about an "idealistic campaign staffer who gets a crash course on dirty politics" -- will likely bring better fortune in the form of critical acclaim and box office returns.
The movie boasts a heavyweight cast -- Ryan Gosling, Marisa Tomei,...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader – Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley
The Tourist – Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Paul Bettany
Movie of the Week
The Tourist
The Stars: Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Paul Bettany
The Plot: An American tourist (Depp) finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent (Jolie) uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal.
The Buzz: I’m having a hard time answering the following question: who would I rather spend a day with, Johnny Depp or Angelina Jolie? Sure, change the “day” to “night” and the situation would be simplified by hormonal trappings — but in all seriousness, these are two of the most alluring, charismatic, iconic “beautiful people” working in Hollywood today. Depp is mystifyingly cool, and a brilliant actor. I feel Jolie is about twelve steps below Depp in acting prowess,...
