A project that has been decades in the making, the most expensive film in the history of producer Charles Band‘s company Full Moon, the stop-motion epic The Primevals made its festival premiere last summer and was given a theatrical release through Alamo Drafthouse cinemas last month. A special edition Blu-ray release from Full Moon is forthcoming – but the Australian company Umbrella Entertainment has already started accepting pre-orders for their Blu-ray release of The Primevals, which has a release date of August 7th!

He spent around twenty years thinking of and working on this sci-fi fantasy film. The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, with the tenth day getting into the anti-festive spirit for all the holiday grinches out there. This is for those that approach December with a “bah humbug” attitude and prefer any iconography or holiday theming to be kept to a minimum when it comes to horror. Most of these ten horror titles are technically set on or around Christmas, but can’t muster up enough cheer to really embrace the holiday spirit. Many of which don’t even bother with Christmas at all, beyond a quick scene or mention.
If you’re already sick of Santa Claus, and all things holiday related, here are ten holiday horror movies – technically – that would rather just cut straight to the horror.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

Sure, 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins aren’t to be sniffed at. But the remarkable thing about Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is that it should have been nominated for more. Only one of the cast was nominated for an Oscar across all three films — that was for Best Supporting Actor for Sir Ian McKellen in 2002 for “The Fellowship of the Ring” — while there were a few other curious snubs that, in hindsight, just don’t make sense. So, there was actually more room to nominate this rightly-heralded trilogy of astounding films. With that in mind, here are five more Oscar nominations “The Lord of the Rings” should have landed.
Best Original Score: “The Two Towers”
The music of “The Lord of the Rings” has gone down as one of the best scores ever committed to film. Howard Shore‘s adored score is so top drawer it leaves you clamoring for more.

In 2004, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” became the film with joint-most Oscar wins of all time with a whopping 11 victories, matching the total tallies of both “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur.” Those 11 Academy Awards capped off a hugely successful trilogy of movies that collectively snagged 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins in total. But yet… Peter Jackson‘s film series, adapted from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, is so, so good that, well, it could have won more. That sounds greedy and over the top, of course, but if you take a look at each film’s nominations, it’s actually very feasible that any one of the three films could have turned the bid into a win. So, with that in mind, here are five Oscar nominations that “The Lord of the Rings” films could and perhaps should have turned into victories.

It's heartbreaking to think of all the movies that never made it to the screen. We keep hearing stories of projects collecting dust, incomplete due to unexpected tragedy, or a lack of funds, or a greedy studio executive cutting corners for tax purposes. But every now and then, a long-dead film is exhumed from the grave and is given new life to be enjoyed by a new generation of fans. Case in point: The Primevals, a fantasy adventure more than 50 years in the making that finally got to celebrate its world premiere at this year's Fantasia Film Festival.
The Primevals was first conceived in 1967 by stop motion animator David Allen, whose credits include the adult parody Flesh Gordon, Larry Cohen's Q – the Winged Serpent, and Alex Winter's Freaked. For more than a decade, an early draft of the script was shopped around to various studios, until 1978 when...

Only 17-year-old Charley Brewster (Ragsdale) knows Jerry’s bloodcurdling secret. When Charley can’t get anybody to believe him, he turns to TV horror host Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), who used to be the “Great Vampire Killer” of the movies. When I was a kid, my family would spend New Year's Eve watching movies rented from the local video store. As a young film fanatic, this was one of my favorite nights of the year; not only was everyone else in my family finally sharing my favorite pastime with me, but I would even get to stay up way past my regular bedtime watching movie after movie after movie. The only downside of this tradition was that we weren't the only household in town to do this, apparently, because most of the good movies were usually taken by the time we made it to the video store to stock up. That meant we were often forced to rent more off-beat titles—the ones that hadn't been snatched up because most people hadn't even heard of them.

All hail the memory of Stanley Donen. We also appreciate the razor-sharp satire of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, whose genius Donen preserved in this hilarious Faustian comedy. Poor pitiful Stanley Moon bargains with the Devil for seven chances to win the woman of his dreams, which naturally turns out to be a big mistake. Who could make a wise decision with Raquel Welch’s ‘Lillian Lust’ climbing into their bed?

Horror that skews to a younger audience is a tricky proposition: where is the line between appealing to their budding sensibilities and traumatizing them forever? It’s a fine one for sure, but the ‘80s were built for the young, with the MTV and the glowing clothes and the disaffected suburbanites (just ask Rush); it was a playful decade culturally, and horror plugged directly into that adolescent electricity with The Gate (1987), a hellzapoppin’ tale of friendship, family, metal, and jaw dropping satanic trolls.
Released by New Century Vista Film Company mid-May in North America, the Canadian made film was a surprise hit, bringing in nearly $14 million against a $2.5 million budget. The critics liked it too, especially heaping praise on its very impressive stop motion and forced perspective work, courtesy of Randall William Cook (Fright Night). But technical wizardry aside, The Gate deserves a lot of credit for tapping into childhood...

The perpetrator of the radio hoax of the century, the voice of Unicron—nemesis of Primus in the battle for 4-wheeled multiverse domination—or the director of the ex-best movie of all-time. Who is Orson Welles? Both his laudable first attempt at movie making (Citizen Kane) and his last essayistic masterpiece (F for Fake) are plagued by similar concerns. As a director, whether in the act of mythmaking and mythbusting, or forging and faking, Welles’ career stands as a living testament to the obsession with putting truth under a lens and exploring the lies told through film. As an actor, Welles embraced the lie, shape shifting back and forth between numerous roles, from the Shakespearean Othello, MacBeth or Falstaff, to the slippery Harry Lime from The Third Man. Alas, the bulk of the roles he played were modified versions of himself or his public persona, hiding in plain sight, often...

He’s not joking. A steaming hole has opened up in Glen’s back garden, and while his parents are away for the weekend he’ll have to defend his home from a demonic invasion.
Glen’s main guardian is his older sister, Al (Christa Denton). Together, the siblings and Terry will face ghosts, poltergeists, zombies, moths and hordes of ankle-biting mini trolls. Since the early days of home video Ray Harryhausen’s films have been a lightning rod for companies eager to one-up the competition with bigger and brighter releases of the beloved animator’s work. Located in the UK, Powerhouse/Indicator is the latest to jump on the bandwagon with lavishly appointed blu ray sets each featuring three of his films. Though all these movies have been previously released through other companies, Powerhouse has upped the ante with fresh transfers and a broad slate of new extras.

Back in 1964 a lot of people still thought dolphins were fish, but by the time this TV show was finished, we all knew that our happy undersea friend was smarter than the average bear and lives in a world full of wonder. Ivan Tors’ grandly successful Florida-shot family show kept a lot of seagoing movie veterans in green seaweed, including both original ‘Creature’ Gill Men.

David O. Selznick’s absurdly over-cooked western epic is a great picture, even if much of it induces a kind of hypnotic, mouth-hanging-open disbelief. Is this monument to the sex appeal of Jennifer Jones, Kitsch in terrible taste, or have Selznick and his army of Hollywood talents found a new level of hyped melodramatic harmony? It certainly has the star-power, beginning with Gregory Peck as a cowboy rapist who learned his bedside manners from Popeye’s Bluto. It’s all hugely enjoyable.

A Mixed Bag In A Big Box
By Darren Allison
‘I was there; I was in that picture, fighting the Cyclops on the beach, running from the dragon! I was enthralled. It's one of my strongest childhood memories.’ It’s very hard to argue with director John Landis’s vivid account of his earliest memories and the fantasy films of Ray Harryhausen and producer Charles H. Schneer. They seemed to touch us all in an indelible manner and took us into a fantasy realm far beyond our imagination. Indicator has (for the first time in the UK) combined the three Sinbad adventures in one very handsomely produced package. It’s a magical box that has very little trouble in sending us on a journey, and back to a place called innocence…

1987 was an exceedingly awesome year for kid-centric horror movies. In the span of just a few months, we were treated to both Tibor Takács’ The Gate and Fred Dekker’s The Monster Squad, and honestly, there may have not been a better year to be a young genre fan during that decade than in good ol’ 1987. And while there were an incredible amount of quality horror movies for this writer to dig into from that 12-month span of releases, one movie that I always had a deep appreciation for was The Gate, a story that I related to on numerous levels, even if I never happened to summon a horde of demons from digging a hole in my backyard.
An ambitious and good-hearted modern fairy tale that bluntly examined the universal horrors of growing up—both literally and figuratively—The Gate is an admirable genre debut from Takács, who had previously worked in Canadian television,...

Fans of special effects icon Ray Harryhausen should rejoice at the remastering of 1961’s Mysterious Island, a sequel of sorts to Jules Verne’s more celebrated 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which had been memorably adapted by Richard Fleischer in 1954. Director Cy Endfield takes the reigns on this big budget spectacle which tends to suffer from a bout of sequel-itis as regards the bombastic fervor of gigantic, menacing creatures taking precedence over characterization or narrative energy. Still, the production quality does display the same sense of movie magic specific to a certain period of cinema where Harryhausen’s signature Dynamation would influence generations of future filmmakers.

In honor of Halloween, I once again have a special essay-article up, and this time I can name the contributor. Randall William Cook rates special celebrity status around DVD Savant despite being a friend from way, way back. I hope he's writing a book about his career, because his Hollywood experiences range far afield, from UCLA film school, to acting and directing film and TV, to doing special make-ups, animation direction, front-rank stop motion direction, and second unit direction on big features. Heavily into digital work since the 1990s, Randy supervised character animation and sequence direction for the three Lord of the Rings movies, netting him an amazing three Oscars, three years straight. And he's still the same guy from college -- a new Harryhausen or Welles disc comes out, and he wants to know all about it. Oh, and Cook is a fine writer as well -- as I think this thoughtful piece shows.

Scream Factory brings late 80’s horror thriller I, Madman to Blu-ray, one of two notable cult classics from Hungarian/Canadian director Tibor Tabaks. He’d follow that up with this pulpy adaptation of a screenplay by David Chaskin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge). A gothic murder mystery plays out in the eternally uneasy streets of a hazy, 1989 Hollywood in this simple yet strange forgotten oddity.
