Two of the more anticipated star turns on Broadway this season — Steve Carell making his debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Uncle Vanya and The Sopranos alum Michael Imperioli returning to the New York stage in Circle in the Square’s An Enemy of the People — got no love from Tony Award nominators today, and the West End hit Patriots, written by The Crown‘s Peter Morgan, barely registered on the roster, with only one nom for lead actor Michael Stuhlbarg.
Even more empty-handed than Patriots was The Wiz, the cheery, if rote, revival of the beloved Black retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Despite a star turn by Wayne Brady, it’s possible that Tony nominators saw the Broadway revival for the uninspired road show it is.
Other shows with zero nominations included I Need That starring Danny DeVito, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical Harmony,...

A musical inspired by the life of Alicia Keys and a play that loosely draws on the story of Fleetwood Mac — Hell’s Kitchen and Stereophonic, respectively — cleaned up at the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. Both received 13 nominations, more than any other show this year.
Hell’s Kitchen was nominated for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (for Kristoffer Diaz), Best Direction (Michael Greif), and Best Choreography (Camille A. Brown), while its stars Maleah Joi Moon, Shoshana Bean, and Kecia Lewis all picked up acting nods. But despite its impressive haul,...

The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and new play Stereophonic, about a fictional band in the 1970s, led the Tony nominations with 13 nominations each.
The Outsiders, a musical based on the 1967 S.E. Hinton book, followed with 12 nominations and the revival of Cabaret, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, followed with nine nods.
With its 13 noms, Stereophonic set a record for the most Tony nominations for a play, surpassing previous record holder Slave Play’s 12 noms in 2020.
Stereophonic‘s surprisingly strong performance even included a best score nomination despite it being a play.
In the best musical category, Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were nominated, alongside the dance-based show Illionise, with music from Sufjan Stevens’ album and a book by Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury; Suffs, a musical about the women’s suffrage movement with a score and book by Shaina Taub; and Water for Elephants, based on the 2006 novel,...

Francis Ford Coppola's miraculous 1970s run of "The Godfather," "The Conversation," "The Godfather Part II" and "Apocalypse Now" came crashing to a hubristic halt in 1982 when his backlot musical "One from the Heart," produced at his recently purchased Zoetrope Studios in the heart of Hollywood, bombed upon release. Poor reviews and audience indifference resulted in a paltry $637,000 gross against a $26 million budget, thus killing his dream of an artist-driven mini-community.
The magnitude of the film's failure meant Coppola would have to lower his sights for the time being, and make films with more straightforward commercial appeal as a means of paying off his debts. It was a shockingly precipitous fall, one that left his many admirers worried that he'd become more of a paycheck-to-paycheck director. This happened eventually, but for a time he was able to stoke his creative fire even if he was making movies that weren't as...

For as long as “teenager” has been a demographic, there have been stories about teens breaking free from the status quo. While a lot of the modern great teen rebellion media is confined to the world of TV — where shows like “Euphoria” attract constant buzz — the archetypal troubled teen story remains 1955’s “Rebel Without a Cause.” Starring James Dean in unquestionably his defining role, a rebellious teen struggling with his demons in L.A., Nicholas Ray’s film spoke to young people at the time with its story of high schoolers struggling with, and going against, the social pressures that bring them down. Over the years it became a touchstone because its themes and its honesty transcends generations.
As the teen film has evolved and morphed as a genre, there’s always been room for stories of iconoclastic youth who don’t fit in with the status quo. Oftentimes, these...

If you haven't seen "The Outsiders" in the past 20 years, you may want to revisit the coming-of-age classic: in 2005, it was rereleased with 22 minutes of additional footage, reportedly at director Francis Ford Coppola's request. The new version of the movie, titled "The Outsiders: The Complete Novel," hewed more closely to the beloved S.E. Hinton book of the same name, and it also reinstated a scene that Coppola regretted cutting after the film's 1983 release.
The sequence in question features young greaser Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) sharing a bed with his popular older brother Sodapop (Rob Lowe). In it, the pair hug, toss and turn, and talk about life and love. Ponyboy asks Soda why he dropped out of school, Soda shares his intent to marry his girlfriend Sandy, and the older brother encourages the younger to shake it off when his friends are mean to him. It's a shared moment...

The young adult novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton has captivated readers for decades, and the 1983 film adaptation, filled with rising stars, further cemented its place in popular culture. Now, a new musical adaptation at the Jacobs Theater on Broadway seeks to tap into the timeless story’s magic.
The musical, directed by Danya Taymor, possesses undeniable heart and soul, but it occasionally falls short of a truly theatrical experience. Although the plot of The Outsiders is rich in dramatic events—a clash between rival gangs, a star-crossed romance, and a climactic confrontation—the stage adaption can easily be compared to other classic stage productions, particularly Grease and West Side Story.
The script, written by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, focuses on three orphaned brothers: Ponyboy, portrayed by Brody Grant as the narrator; the brawny and romantic Sodapop, played by Jason Schmidt; and the eldest brother, Darrel, portrayed by Brent Comer as the father figure.

Since MCU’s Eternals, Angelina Jolie has remained out of the public spotlight until recently, as she joined her youngest daughter at the red carpet premiere of her Broadway show. Vivienne, 15, whom she shares with ex-husband Brad Pitt, known for starring alongside her mother in 2014’s Maleficent, joined forces with Jolie in the new stage adaptation of S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders.
The Oscar winner recalled that Vivienne, who worked as an assistant on the stage adaptation, was pretty committed to her job, and didn’t shy away from schooling Jolie on several instances.

“Juvenile Delinquents Turn Heroes,” proclaims a newspaper headline in S.E. Hinton’s 1967 novel The Outsiders, which was famously adapted for the screen in 1983 by Francis Ford Coppola. And the juvenile delinquents on stage at the Bernard J. Jacobs Theatre are doing the same, rescuing a Broadway season overstuffed with undercooked musicals in an unexpectedly persuasive new adaptation of Hinton’s scrappy, moving story.
This show follows close on the heels of two other book-to-movie-to-musical adaptations, The Notebook and Water for Elephants. But The Outsiders far outstrips them both in the sophisticated storytelling of Adam Rapp and Justine Levine’s book, the adventurous staging of director Danya Taymor, and the dramatically specific and potent score from Levine and folk duo Jamestown Revival. Put another way, The Outsiders is, at last, a darn good musical.

The Broadway musical The Outsiders will celebrate its official opening night this week and the production has released a stunning set of photos.
The musical is adapted from S.E. Hinton‘s seminal book and Francis Ford Coppola‘s iconic movie. The story is set in 1967 in Tulsa, Oklahoma and follows Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade and their Greaser family of “outsiders” as they battle with their affluent rivals, the Socs.
Angelina Jolie and her daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt joined the producing team after they fell in love with the musical during its pre-Broadway run in La Jolla, California last year.
“Viv reminds me of my mother in that she isn’t focused on being the center of attention but in being a support to other creatives,” Angelina told People. “She’s very thoughtful and serious about theatre and working hard to best understand how to contribute.”

Until recently, if one were asked to name some of the best films of preeminent 1970s filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, it would be easy to pick the big hits. “The Godfather” (1972), “The Godfather II” (1974) and “Apocalypse Now” (1979) are definitely his most iconic and respected films. You’d also be hard-pressed to find a person aged 25-50 who isn’t keenly aware of his adaption of S.E. Hinton’s mandatory high school assigned “The Outsiders” (1983) or his classics “Peggy Sue Got Married” (1986) and maybe even “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” (1988). Yet lately, Coppola’s “The Conversation” (1974) has entered the chat as a somewhat under the radar, low-key masterpiece from the filmmaker, and this year the film celebrates its 50th birthday.
After honing his directorial chops on films like the Roger Corman-produced horror film “Dementia 13” (1963) and fledgling films like “You’re a Big Boy Now” (1966), “Finian’s Rainbow” (1968) and “The Rain People...

Broadway’s first salvo of spring newcomers was more than holding its own last week, with recent arrivals drawing strong audiences.
Two shows had their opening nights during the week ending March 24, with An Enemy of the People, starring Jeremy Strong, Michael Imperioli and Victoria Pedretti, playing to standing room only crowds at Circle in the Square. Receipts were at a hefty $898,353, with attendance at 103% of seating capacity.
Also opening was Water For Elephants, the new musical starring Grant Gustin at the Imperial, with receipts down $23,144 from the previous week, due in no small part to press and opening night comps. The show grossed $875,269. Attendance for the three previews and five regular performances was 86% of capacity.
The Who’s Tommy was in previews at the Nederlander, filling 93% of seats at the venue (the Wednesday matinee was canceled due to an illness in the company) and grossing $822,391. Opening night is this Thursday,...

Broadway’s insanely busy spring doesn’t really kick into full gear until next month when 14 new shows have their official openings, but with March as a sort of sign of things to come – five shows have opened or will soon this month – box office was strong last week.
In all, the 25 productions grossed $28,059,463 during the week ending March 17, a bump of 14% over the previous week, with attendance of 219,954 at a solid 94% of capacity.
Recent arrivals on the list found a welcoming Broadway. Some of the notable entries:
The Notebook, which opened to decidedly mixed reviews, proved steadily popular with audiences. Opening night and press comps barely dented receipts: The show grossed $767,281, filling 98% of seats at the Schoenfeld. While Francis Ford Coppola is, and always will be associated with his greatest work namely The Godfather trilogy, the prolific director was instrumental in kickstarting the careers of many A-list celebrities today. The director cast a bunch of young actors for his 1983 film The Outsiders which was based on the 1967 novel of the same name by S.E Hinton.

Four decades after its release, director Francis Ford Coppola took to Instagram on Thursday to share audition tapes from his 1983 film, The Outsiders.
The film, based on the 1963 novel by S.E. Hinton, is known for, among other things, launching the careers of many of its young stars, including Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Diane Lane, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon and Emilio Estevez.
In his post on Thursday, Coppola recounted his unique casting process for the endeavor. “We had all the actors together on a soundstage and would alternate different actors reading for different roles,” he said. The process is reflected in the accompanying footage of Coppola’s post, where various actors read lines from characters they did not play. At one point, the clips include several different performances of the line, “Hop the 3:15 freight to Windrixvill.”

Over forty years after its release, Coppola has shared audition footage of The Outsiders on Instagram, featuring Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillion, Ralph Macchio, and more. There’s even footage of actors who didn’t get roles in the movie, including a young Anthony Michael Hall.

Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola has made an Instagram post about the unique way he cast his adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. The movie, which came out in 1983, starred several notable actors — Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Patrick Swayze, and Ralph Macchio, among others — but they didn’t necessarily audition for the roles they got; they auditioned for all the roles.

If you could sit down with Francis Ford Coppola – one of the greatest titans and entrepreneurs in movie history – what would you ask him? His best advice for a young filmmaker? His favorite movies? Perhaps his go-to ice cream flavor? Well, the director had all that and more to share during a recent Instagram Ama session; yes, Coppola has Instagram, and yes, you can ask him anything.
First and foremost, during the Ama, Coppola was asked what his favorite movies of his daughter Sofia’s were, in which he rattled off her debut, 1999’s Virgin Suicides, 2003’s Lost in Translation, 2006’s Marie Antoinette, and 2010’s Somewhere. That’s half of her filmography – Francis is such a dad! As for his own pictures, Coppola didn’t cite The Godfather or Apocalypse Now or Jack but rather 1983’s Rumble Fish, his second S.E. Hinton movie after The Outsiders (also out in ‘83). As for other directors’ works,...

Angelina Jolie has shared that she intentionally began taking on fewer roles in films in recent years.
In her recent Vogue cover story about her new fashion house, Atelier Jolie, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about her current phase in life and said she’s “still understanding who I am at 48.”
“I guess I’m in transition as a person,” she said. “I feel a bit down these days. I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way, which I don’t want to get into.”
As Jolie works to figure out what’s most important to her and where she wants to focus her energy, she said Atelier Jolie has played a huge part. She revealed that’s especially true since she made the decision to start working on fewer movies about seven years ago and “only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.

Francis Ford Coppola, the legendary director of The Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, and The Conversation, has recently revealed his favorite film among his own works. In an interview with The Guardian, Coppola said that he considers Rumble Fish, a 1983 film based on the novel by S.E. Hinton, to be his “best film” .
Rumble Fish is a stylized black-and-white film that stars Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, and Dennis Hopper. It tells the story of Rusty James (Dillon), a young gang leader who idolizes his older brother, the Motorcycle Boy (Rourke), a former gang leader who has returned from California. The film explores the themes of youth, alienation, violence, and brotherhood, as Rusty James tries to live up to his brother’s reputation and cope with his own identity crisis.

Gray Frederickson, the Oscar-winning producer who worked alongside Francis Ford Coppola on the Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now and One From the Heart in a collaboration that spanned more than four decades, has died. He was 85.
Frederickson died Sunday at his home in Oklahoma City after a battle with prostate cancer, his wife, Karen, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Frederickson shared the best picture Oscar in 1975 with writer-director-producer Coppola and producer Fred Roos for The Godfather Part II — the first of just two sequels to take the big prize — and the trio (and Tom Sternberg) were nominated again for Apocalypse Now (1979).
“I got on a winning horse. I was with Francis Coppola, who’s no slouch. I was lucky enough to be carried along with him,” Frederickson told The Oklahoman in a 2021 interview. “I got lucky with him, but he says he got lucky with me.

Francis Ford Coppola is known for big swings throughout his career, but one of his biggest was filming the adaptations of S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” and “Rumble Fish” back-to-back and releasing them both in 1983 only months apart. The two movies’ filmmaking styles could not possibly be more different, with the lush Technicolor palette of “The Outsiders” giving way to the shadowy, moody black-and-white of “Rumble Fish,” a film so stylish in its look that it became a prototype for indies in years to come.
This is thanks to cinematographer Stephen H. Burum, the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the international cinematography festival EnergaCamerimage in Poland. Burum was on hand after a retrospective screening of “Rumble Fish,” one of many of his films screened throughout festival. (Others range from “St. Elmo’s Fire” to “The Untouchables” to “Hoffa;” he received an Oscar nomination for the latter.) The 82 year-old lenser,...

At a certain point in the 1980s, there was no bigger movie star than Matt Dillon. Exploding into the cultural stratosphere with a trio of popular S.E. Hinton film adaptations, the young actor transitioned from heartthrob to dynamic leading man in the space of a decade. Roles in Gus Van Sant’s masterful Drugstore Cowboy, Cameron Crowe’s Singles, and Tim Hunter’s The Saint of Fort Washington followed, each one wildly different from the other.
Thirty years later, Dillon finds himself at the Telluride Film Festival as the director of the breezy, illuminating documentary El Gran Fellove, which tells the story of Francisco Fellove Valdés, the underappreciated Cuban scat singer and showman. The film also highlights the “Feeling” Movement that came out of Cuba in the 1940s, a jazz-inspired musical shift of which Fellove was essential. The musician––like many Cuban artists––would soon move to Mexico, where he found an abundance of success.

Francis Ford Coppola’s classic 1983 coming-of-age drama “The Outsiders” is getting a new 4K restoration from Studiocanal, Warner Bros. and American Zoetrope. The remaster, titled “The Outsiders: The Complete Novel,” is designed to allow fans of the original film to see more of the world created in S.E. Hinton’s original novel. It includes new music and several cut scenes which didn’t make the film’s final version. Studiocanal has planned a theatrical release for the film in the U.K. on Oct. 15 and will make both the original and remaster available on Uhd, Blu-Ray, DVD and digital platforms on Nov. 8.

A relatively early exercise in Francis Ford Coppola’s revisionist tendencies, The Outsiders found its deserved recognition with The Complete Novel, a 22-years-later recut that added sequences and swapped its original score for contemporaneous pop for an experience closer to S.E. Hinton’s beloved source.
If not on a scale with recent futzes Dementia 13, Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, The Cotton Club Encore, and (somehow it never reads more concisely) Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, we’re glad to see The Complete Novel get a theatrical release on September 26, with a 4K Uhd to follow on November 9.

“The Outsiders The Complete Novel came about after meeting students over the years who repeatedly asked me why certain scenes from S.E. Hinton’s wonderful book were missing from the theatrical version. These questions reminded about my inspiration for the film—in 1980, a contingent...

The Walking Dead TV universe has expanded quite a bit since the flagship series premiered in 2010. Since then, Fear the Walking Dead has taken us to the west coast, introducing a whole new family of survivors as they escape LA, make it into Mexico, and later settle in Texas. While they go through many of the same trials and tribulations as Rick Grimes and the rest of Alexandria, these spin-off characters handle things in their own unique ways.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond, the newest, sci-fi-tinged companion series, feels unique, too. After all, it follows a group of teenagers learning to survive in the real world after escaping their utopian settlement. Unlike the rough-around-the-edges characters of the other two series, Iris, Hope, Silas, and Elton were still doing homework, studying, and preparing for graduation when they’re forced to leave their academics behind at the Campus Colony in order to...

Riverdale reinvents itself as the fifth season properly gets underway.
This Riverdale review contains spoilers.
Riverdale Season 5 Episode 4
“To be honest, it doesn’t even feel like Riverdale anymore.”
You can say that again Archie.
Following three episodes originally intended for last year and a seven-year time jump, Riverdale‘s fifth season gets well and truly underway with an installment designed not so much with shaking up the status quo but reinventing it completely. To borrow the name of a Flaming Lips song — you just know NYC writer’s block-stricken Jughead listens to lots of the band’s output — suddenly everything has changed.
In the near decade since he was last home, Archie has been through hell fighting in an unnamed conflict in which he feels responsible for one of his fellow soldiers losing a leg. He has dreams that mix battle imagery with the formally idyllic existence he had in high school.

Graphic novels are real books and deserve to be respected as such. Add these ten incredible graphic novels to your reading list today!
“Last week, S.E. Hinton, author of the well-known YA series The Outsiders, made a condescending and obtuse remark on the validity of graphic novels on her Twitter. Naturally, Twitter went ablaze and swiftly set Hinton straight—but it’s still worth remembering that, whether or not you may personally believe it to be so, graphic novels are real books with literary merit and worthy of respect.”
Read more at The Mary Sue.
The way we celebrate Halloween today may be quite new, but the holiday itself is rooted in a lot of history—and spooky superstitions.
“Many centuries before candy corn was invented, the ancient Celts celebrated Samhain on October 31, a night that marked the end of the year and the official start of winter. Samhain, which later became folded into Halloween,...

He changes his name to Cage so as not to live off the Coppola name, then takes a role in his second big feature directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring alongside a whole host of soon to be household name talent…
As I said in the the review of our Lord and Saviours movie Valley Girl, I had never seen Rumble Fish… yet. Of course I have heard countless amazing reports of the flick. People saying this is the movie that helped put many names on the map and is an unflinching look at an era in America. This being the second big feature for our man Nic Cage I was only to happy to not only check it out for our mission but also rectify a long standing movie mistake of having not seen Rumble Fish.
I have however seen ’83s Coppola flick The Outsiders hundreds of times...

Veteran film industry executive Krysanne Katsoolis has launched Viewpark, which will finance, package and release high-end film and TV content.
Viewpark has partnered with former Wall Street executive Keith Price’s Obsidian Asset Management to create a multi-million dollar fund for the production and marketing of its slate, Katsoolis told Variety. Obsidian, based in London and Cayman Islands, has made an initial commitment of $200 million to support Viewpark’s production and release plans.
Headquartered in New York, Katsoolis will draw from her relationships with directors and producers. The Viewpark slate includes “Abandoned Heights,” an American Zoetrope production written and directed by Jack Stallings, “Some of Tim’s Stories,” a film adaptation of the novel by S.E. Hinton (writer of “Rumblefish” and “Outsiders”) and “Hard Apple,” based on Jerome Charyn’s “Isaac Sidel” detective book series.

Fresh off a quick solo tour through Europe, Chris Shiflett returned to his podcasting duties with a new episode of Walking the Floor with Parker Millsap. Not that their conversation was entirely new: Shiflett says he culled the episode from his “backlog” of recordings, having sat down with the Oklahoma-reared singer-songwriter in November. Besides discussing Millsap’s more recent LP, 2018’s Other Arrangements, and their shared love of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, here are five things we learned from the musicians’ chat.
Millsap learned his finger-picking style from Travis Linville,...

A musical version of The Outsiders, based on both S.E. Hinton’s groundbreaking 1967 Ya novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film version that introduced a generation of young actors who would dominate the screen for years to come, will make its world premiere next year at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre.
Though there currently are no plans for the musical beyond Chicago, the production’s creative team has significant ties to New York and Hollywood. The musical’s book is written by Adam Rapp, whose plays have been staged at, among other venues, New York Theatre Workshop and Rattlestick Theatre, and his film and TV credits include The L Word, In Treatment and The Looming Tower.
The production’s director, Liesl Tommy, directed Eclipsed starring Lupita Nyong’o both Off- and on Broadway in 2015-16. Tommy’s upcoming film projects include the movie adaptation of Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime...

Don’t worry, Ponyboy fans, “The Outsiders” will stay gold — and away from a remake at HBO.
On Thursday, the official HBO Twitter account posted a picture of the Brat Pack cast from the Francis Ford Coppola-directed ’80s classic writing, “Can we all agree to bring denim looks back this year?”
The throwback shot of “The Outsiders” stars C. Thomas Howell (Ponyboy Curtis), Rob Lowe (Sodapop Curtis), Emilio Estevez (Two-Bit Matthews), Matt Dillon (Dally Winston), Tom Cruise (Steve Randle), Patrick Swayze (Darry Curtis), and Ralph Macchio (Johnny Cade) and the caption prompted confusion among users who thought the cryptic post signaled a remake of the film — which was an adaptation of the 1967 novel of the same name by S.E. Hinton — might be in development at the premium cabler.

Celebrating its 30th year, the USC Libraries Scripter Awards handed out wins to Bruce Miller and Margaret Atwood for lauded Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale” as well as James Ivory and Andre Aciman for Oscar-nominated drama “Call Me By Your Name.” Ivory, who is 89, hadn’t been back to his Alma Mater USC for 60 years. “I made my career on adaptations,” he said.
The jury vote for the 30th USC Libraries Scripter Award nominees was so close that two ties resulted for the film and television categories. Due to a three-way tie in the nomination round, the writers of seven films and the works on which the films are based competed for the honors this year. (I’m on the Scripter selection committee.)
Other nominees included movies “Mudbound,” “Wonder Woman,” “The Disaster Artist,” “The Lost City of Z,’ “Molly’s Game” and “Logan” as well as TV series “Mindhunter,...
