You’d think humanity would be better than this by now. Mj and Flash Thompson are no longer white in the McU, and nobody cares. We had our first black president, and everything worked out just fine. Will Smith even nailed it as the Genie in Aladdin. But here we are again and now, even The Little Mermaid isn’t safe.
This time, the completely unnecessary controversy is surrounding Halle Bailey. She’s the talented actress who plays Skylar Forster in Grown-ish, the spinoff of ABC’s Black-ish. If her name’s unfamiliar to you though, that’s all about to change, as Disney has cast the African-American youngster as Ariel in their upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
Many celebs and websites have shown their support for the actress, including Disney’s TV channel Freeform, and in response to all the haters online who can’t seem to get behind Bailey as Ariel,...

It isn’t enough that “American Idol” judge Katy Perry gets to attend what amounts to a concert by possible future stars of tomorrow each week. She actually spends her days off on weekends re-watching the reality talent show with her fiance, actor Orlando Bloom, and her family members.
“Sunday is usually family night for us — Orlando, myself, my sister, my parents, my brother,” the pop chanteuse, 34, whose hits include “I Kissed a Girl,” “Teenage Dream” and “Firework,” told “Us” magazine at an “American Idol” event in Los Angeles. “So, it’s like cuddling with the kids, and we usually watch ‘Idol’ on Sunday night and have dinner, and we’ll have takeout or what have you. So we went to Crossroads last night and had Impossible Burgers. There were 20 of us.”

The Disney songbook includes dozens, if not hundreds, of iconic tunes from the past eight decades. “I 2 I” from “A Goofy Movie” is not one of them. Unfortunately, Uche found this out the hard way during “American Idol’s” Disney night when he was eliminated following his performance of the song that judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan and guest mentor Rebel Wilson had never heard of before. In other words, Uche really goofed up.

The writing was on the wall during Uche’s mentoring session with Rebel when she admitted, “I don’t think I’ve seen ‘A Goofy Movie.'” Uche joked that he “couldn’t be friends” with her because of that and pretended to walk away. Later on Rebel declared, “I think the song is a bit obscure, but I think if he brings the energy he should crush it.

Ever since Disney’s 2010 live-action/CGI re-do of their 1951 animated version of “Alice in Wonderland,” directed by Tim Burton and with an all-star cast including Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter that cashed in with $1 billion-plus in ticket sales worldwide, the House of Mouse has put into motion a similar array of remakes of their animated classics — 11 so far. The total global box-office bonanza? More than $5 billion.

I grew up loving two things: Disney, and musicals - so it should come as no surprise that some of my favorite movies were about Disney princesses. While Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid will always hold a special place in my millennial heart, there is one Disney film from the '90s that outshines the rest: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella.
With stunning performances from Brandy and Whitney Houston, magical sets, and music by the iconic music duo that brought us The Sound of Music (another one of my faves), it's clear why the 1997 TV movie is one of a kind. In fact, I would go as far as saying it actually tops the original. If you played the film on repeat like me when you were younger, take a trip down memory lane as I recount all the reasons why it's truly the best Cinderella movie.

When Disney isn’t busy pumping out “Star Wars” spin-offs or Marvel superhero sequels and origin stories, the studio seems bound and determined to recycle every one of its animated classics into a live-action or heavily CGI version. Back in 1994, the House of Mouse did its first live-action redo based on 1967’s “The Jungle Book.” Directed by Stephen Sommers, it took in an Ok $42 million at the box office. It was a step in a new direction from the old days when the studio would do anniversary revivals of their treasured animated features by re-releasing them on the big screen.
That tradition ended when they got more bang out of their remake buck with 1996’s live-action “101 Dalmatians,” based on the 1961 cartoon feature. The big draw was Glenn Close as the malevolent puppy-snatcher Cruella de Vil. The doggy romance hit the spot, grossing $320.7 million worldwide — although its sequel, “102 Dalmatians,...

Camila Cabello will make her feature acting debut by starring in a new version of a classic: Cinderella. The multitalented, Grammy-nominated singer has been cast in an upcoming remake that will be produced by James Corden, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Few details are known about the plot yet, but THR noted that "Sony is putting the project on the fast track for production," so more cast details will likely be released soon. Unlike 2015's Cinderella starring Lily James, this will not be a Disney production.

Derrick Baskin was sick of musicals when Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations arrived in his life. He’d performed on Broadway in Memphis, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Little Mermaid, and was enjoying the change of pace that was Hulu’s Difficult People when his agent came calling with the job that could put Baskin into his first starring role. As Otis Williams, founder of the group that gave the world “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination” and one after another of the greatest songs of the 1960s and ’70s, Baskin would be a first among equals, the singer who first envisioned what The Temptations could and would be.
“I immediately tried to shut him down,” Baskin recalls in this Deadline interview. But the actor had a change of heart, and now finds himself leading what is easily the biggest hit musical of this Broadway season,...

Disney+ has wrapped filming on Jon Favreau’s live-action “Star Wars” TV series “The Mandalorian,” the new streaming service announced Wednesday.
Starring Nick Nolte, Werner Herzog, Gina Carano, and Pedro Pascal as the titular character, “The Mandalorian” follows the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. The cast also includes Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers and Omid Abtahi.
The series is set in the time period between “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens.” In “Star Wars” lore, Mandalorians made the iconic armor that bounty hunter Boba Fett and his “father” Jango Fett wore in the films. Boba was technically an unaltered clone of Jango.

Disney+ is developing a scripted series that will focus on iconic Disney villains, Variety has learned from sources.
The series is currently titled “Book of Enchantments” and will be based on the “Villains” book series penned by Serena Valentino. It will tell the origin stories of Disney characters like Ursula from “The Little Mermaid,” The Beast from “Beauty and the Beast,” Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty,” and the Wicked Queen from “Snow White.” Michael Seitzman will write and produce the series under his Maniac Productions banner. ABC Signature Studios will produce.
Disney+ and ABC declined to comment.
Seitzman previously created the CBS medical drama “Code Black” and worked on the ABC series “Quantico.” He is also set to oversee the multi-series John Grisham universe currently in the works at Hulu, which will be comprised of the dramas “The Rainmaker” and “Rogue Lawyer.” Jason Richman is also onboard to write and executive...

Ahead of the UK premiere of The Rusalka at Arrow Video FrightFest Glasgow 2019, director Perry Blackshear tells us about the joys of collaboration, his love of fairy tales and finding romance in horror.
Can you give us some fun facts about your background and why you wanted to direct?
Our family got a little webcam when I was I think 11. It could record at about 5 frames per second, and it had a 6-foot cord from the computer so your camera setup options were pretty limited. And I just loved it so much. I made probably hundreds of minor epics in that one room. I think my most infamous was about a toy panther who defeats a trio of evil triceratops. My parents still believe it’s my best work.

“We Are Movie Geeks?..Aren’t we all” the young gentleman taking the photo for the Oscars badge said, and how correct he was. The stage is set for tomorrow nights awards; red carpet out, lighting set, roads closed, and security up. The crowds are even larger than usual in Hollywood, with movie fans out in force to see the pageantry. Temperatures are cooler than usual, but by this time tomorrow night the town will be hot!

Like everything else in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” the decision to change Doc Ock to Olivia Octavius turned the animated adventure upside down. Co-director Bob Persichetti proposed the gender-switched role as a subversive twist; when the production cast Kathryn Hahn (“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation”) as her voice, Sony Animation finally believed that she would make a formidable villain.

“The freedom we had with an alt universe was an opportunity to lean into something very interesting with a female,” Persichetti said. “Early on, we had aspirations to get Kathryn Hahn to be a really smart, idiosyncratic, quirky but dangerous villain. And we fell in love with her voice and the way she played her, and then we just had to build a visualization of the two sides of her. And that was where the real fun took place.

The Little Mermaid is still a timeless classic almost 30 years after its release. Even as an adult, I'm still enchanted by Ariel and Eric's love story, the gorgeous animation, and the film's magical score. Not only was the movie a huge part of people's childhoods, but it also marked the start of the Disney Renaissance - the decade from 1989 to 1999 in which Walt Disney Animation Studios produced critically-acclaimed films like The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin.
After all these years, The Little Mermaid is still touching people's lives as it gets retold to different generations. In 2008, the film was turned into a Broadway musical, and in 2016, Disney held a special live concert of the film at the Hollywood Bowl starring Sara Bareilles, Darren Criss, and more. Now, the memorable tale is getting yet another life with Disney's upcoming live-action remake.

Lin-Manuel Miranda called out the Motion Picture Academy Friday after news broke that not all of the nominees for Best Original Song would be performed at this year’s Oscars ceremony.
Variety reported on Thursday that only two of the five nominated songs — Lady Gaga’s “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” and Kendrick Lamar’s “All the Stars” from “Black Panther” — would be performed live on the Oscar broadcast on Feb. 24, as selected by Academy executives and show producers.
That would leave the songs “I’ll Fight” from “Rbg” as performed by Jennifer Hudson, “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” as sung by Emily Blunt, and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” as performed by Tim Blake Nelson from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” out in the lurch.

Pixar has launched a very cool new program for artists to get their short films made and out there for the public to view. The program will officially debut at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood this Friday, January 18, 2019, and run through the 24th. Here’s what the President of Pixar Animation Studios, Jim Morris, had to say about the program:
“The SparkShorts program is designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows. These films are unlike anything we’ve ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare.”
That’s so awesome! Each of the three shorts that are debuting will follow a showing of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, with three showings daily. The shorts will then make their online debut on the Disney/Pixar Youtube channel.

Disney’s recent trend of remaking their most cherished animated works is showing no sign of slowing down, and with Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall set to reimagine The Little Mermaid, a few actresses have been all too happy to throw their hat in the ring for the lead role of Ariel.
Among the first to express an interest was Lindsay Lohan, who took to Instagram back in 2017 to declare that she “will sing again” as the mermaid princess. Heading into Golden Globes weekend, awards campaigners are taking every opportunity to put their contenders in front of cameras and media. One of the most civilized events is the annual American Film Institute Awards lunch, which is more relaxed and convivial than most gatherings, because, as AFI president Bob Gazzale always points out, everybody’s a winner.
The first week of January each year, top players involved with the 10 movie and 10 TV winners know all they have to do is comfortably socialize for an hour or so, eat their salmon, and applaud 20 clips.
