Good afternoon my lovelies!
Happy birthday to Alison Pill, Kathryn Bigelow, Robin Givens and Jennifer O'Dell!

VH1's biopic about the hip hop/R&B group TLC will begin shooting in early 2013. The remaining members of the band, Chilli and T-Boz, have signed on to be executive producers and consultants on the film. I wonder who they'll cast as Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes?

Telluride - Actress Marion Cotillard didn't really explode onto the domestic film stage until "La Vie en Rose," but what a coming out it was. She managed to win an Oscar that few (ahem) saw coming and transformed that newfound respect and goodwill into a thriving Hollywood career, but it was hardly an overnight success story. Cotillard had already seen plenty of success in her native France before that 2007 explosion. She starred in Arnaud Desplechin's "My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument," Pierre Grimblat's "Lisa" and the "Taxi" action comedy trilogy -- earning plenty of recognition for...

Box office fanboys, the time has finally come.
Warner Bros.’ $250 million sequel The Dark Knight Rises arrives in theaters at midnight tonight, and it’s destined for one of the strongest opening weekends of all time.
The final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy could very well set a new opening weekend record if it outdoes The Avengers’ $207.4 million May debut, but that will be a difficult figure to reach — not impossible, but very tough.
When The Dark Knight hit theaters in 2008, it was riding a wave of excitement. Not only had 2005′s Batman Begins (which made a rather...

This year’s line-up for the 68th Venice Film Festival, taking place between 31st August and 10th September, has been announced by the festival’s official website, and as expected, it’s more than a little bit fantastic, with a brilliant line-up of films set to screen in Italy.
Heading the jury this year will be director Darren Aronofsky, the BBC reported back in April, who won the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion, back in 2008 for The Wrestler.
The list, as you can imagine, is a bit of a long one, so I’ve highlighted some of the hottest tipped to look out for beneath. Playing in competition will be:
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, directed by Tomas Alfredson Wuthering Heights, directed by Andrea Arnold Texas Killing Fields, directed by Ami Canaan Mann The Ides of March, directed by George Clooney Quando La Notte, directed by Cristina Comencini Terraferma,...

The line-up for the 2011 Venice Film Festival was unveiled a little earlier today and this year’s edition looks particularly stacked on the English-language side of things with a large number of dramatic outputs from the U.K. and U.S.
Dozens and dozens of high-intrigue fare are set to be premiering over the two week event which kicks off proceedings on August 31st with the George Clooney directed political thriller The Ides of March as an in-competition film. A trailer was released last night and you can see it Here.
The other big headliners include;
Working Title’s attempt to bring the classic John Le Carre novel Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to the big screen for the first time (though there was an amazing 70′s t.v. series with Alec Guinness that this film will need to go to some quality to beat) has been on our radar every...

Christoph Waltz hogged the glory and won the Oscar. But I'm putting my money on Laurent, an actor and film-maker who could become the biggest French export since Juliette Binoche
Last year, Quentin Tarantino released his Inglourious Basterds, and despite being in many ways this director's number one fan I couldn't hide my disappointment with it. However, I hope I've got the good grace to concede Tarantino's remarkable flair for picking and bringing on new talent. All the world knows how the movie made a star of Christoph Waltz. This is also true of Mélanie Laurent, who played the fugitive Jewish woman Shosanna Dreyfus who was being pursued by Waltz's creepy SS "Jew hunter". Laurent had appeared in a number of films before this, but Ib was the real breakthrough. Her father, Pierre Laurent, is incidentally also a professional actor who dubs the voice of Ned Flanders in French broadcasts of The Simpsons.

Until women reach a 50-50 parity with men directors, my mission continues to count the women directors in upcoming and recent film festivals (and an occasional informal glance at what’s selling in the markets). Women’s films in Berlin reflect women’s place in the world both in content and in the numbers of women represented as directors, producers, writers, etc. John Cooper of Sundance stresses the increasing and possibly 50-50 parity of women producers, but I am looking at the directors. As March is Women’s History Month (and all the other months are Men’s History Month according to Gloria Steinem’s L.A. Times Article of March 4, 2010) this blog is in honor of all women everywhere.

The Bermuda Triangle, the grassy knoll, Lucas Leiva - it's safe to say that Christopher Nolan's Inception has joined some esteemed company in the realms of mysterious phenomena. Adding to our list of things we do know about it, though, comes news that the sci-fi "set within the architecture of the mind" will be coming to an IMAX near you in July 2010, concurrent with its theatrical release. While the prospect of seeing Nolan work his magic on a giant canvas is rocking our world, the film itself remains shrouded in secrecy. Marion Cotillard, who plays Lisa, was spilling precisely no beans when we spoke to her this week. "I’ve only had one day [filming] in Paris. I’m doing a movie right now with Guillaume Caunet, and when I’ve finished that I’m going to go to La for the shoot. Can I tell you anything about Lisa?...

- At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features six projects that are moments away from lensing and that we feel are worth signaling out. This August (2009), we are keeping tabs on: a Canadian financed pic with top tier talent, that for the next weeks becomes known as the film that the radiant Rachelle Lebevre committed to and which annoyed Summit Ent., the re-appearance of The Details (it receives a second life), three French filmmakers (Julie Bertucelli, Fabienne Berthaud) on their sophomore efforts and Guillaume Canet on pic number three and finally, master filmmaker Mike Leigh is getting set for his latest project for Focus Features. Noteworthy films that we'll also be keeping tabs on is the remakes for Straw Dogs and Larry Clark's Mona Lisa (I heard that funding was a problem) and Oliver Stone's Money Never Sleeps - the sequel to Wall Street.
