Movie sets are chaotic places, and not just when there's crazy action, breakneck fight scenes, or Michael Bay explosions going off all over the place. Even those somber, dramatic moments that happen on a comfy sound stage can be way more hectic than they appear in the final film. Most sets are like construction zones, especially for big productions like the "Star Wars" films. While the crew is shooting in one stage, odds are another set is being constructed for the next day somewhere close.
And "Star Wars" sets in particular are big jobs, especially back in pre-cgi days. For instance, any time they had to build a set that Yoda would be on they had to build it elevated so there was room for Frank Oz and his fellow puppeteers to be under the floor operating the puppet.
So you have that complication to deal with and then you...

I have been tracking producer Sol Bondy since 2016 when co-production The Happiest Day in the Life of Ölli Mäki won the Un Certain Regard Grand Prize and the European Film Award for Best Debut. He and Fred Burle have been developing The Girl from Köln (aka Köln 75) with writer-director Ido Fluk, the filmmaker behind 2016 Tribeca selection The Ticket since 2019. "This project has been very close to our hearts in the last few years and we're very excited with the way it's been shaped so far," said Bondy, a Variety Producer to Watch in 2018. "It's been such a joy working with Ido on this exciting story and we're thrilled to have put an amazing team together," added Burle, Brazilian born producer who was just made a partner in One Two Films, alongside co-founders Sol Bondy and Christoph Lange. Burle joined One Two in January 2017, having graduated from the German Film and Television Academy (dffb) the previous year. He has previously worked as a film critic, at The Match Factory, and as curator of the inaugural dffb film festival. One Two Films has produced and co-produced award-winning films such as Holy Spider (Read my blog about it here), Vadim Perelman's Persian Lessons (Read my blog about it here), Jennifer Fox's Sundance breakout The Tale, Isabel Coixet's The Bookshop and Juho Kuosmanen's The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki.Other titles in the pipeline include Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson's dark comedy Northern Comfort, which premieres in SXSW later this month, Annemarie Jacir's survival drama The Oblivion Theory, Sarah Arnold's debut feature Wild Encounters and Michiel ten Horn's romantic comedy Any Other Night. In Berlin this year it was announced that Bankside would be The Girl from Köln's international sales agent and was launching sales. Alamode Film already has German-speaking territories and is a coproducer, who have very recently secured funding through the Fff, the local fund in Bavaria. It is in early pre-production and will shoot this year in Poland and Germany. The Girl from Köln tells the little-known story of Vera Brandes, who, in 1975, at the age of 17, staged the famous Köln Concert by jazz musician Keith Jarrett, which became the top-selling jazz solo album of all time. With Polish Film Institute backing, Oscar-winning Polish producer Ewa Puszczynska (Ida, Cold War) of Extreme Emotions is co-producing along with Annegret Weitkämper-Krug of Germany's Gretchenfilm (Seneca). Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Oren Moverman (Love & Mercy, Bad Education) serves as executive producer. Moverman also produced Fluk's previous feature, The Ticket. The Tale writer-director Jennifer Fox also serves as executive producer. Stephen Kelliher and Sophie Green executive produce for Bankside. It stars Mala Emde (Skin Deep, And Tomorrow the Entire World) in the lead role, alongside John Magaro (Past Lives) as Jarrett. Magaro was also in Cannes last year with Kelly Reichardt's competition title Showing Up.Other cast attached include Alexander Scheer (Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush), Ulrich Tukur (The Life of Others), Susanne Wolff (Sisi & I, Styx), Jördis Triebel (Dark), Jan Bülow (Lindenberg) and Marie-Lou Sellem (Tar, Exit Marrakesh). The NYU-graduate Fluk was dubbed "a talent to watch" by Variety following his feature debut Never Too Late, the first crowd-sourced Israeli film ever made. His American debut, the Tribeca competition selection, The Ticket, starred Dan Stevens and Malin Akerman. Upcoming projects include 24 Hours in June, a retelling of the final day in the life of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who were convicted of spying on behalf of the Soviet Union, to be produced by Academy Award winner James Schamus (Brokeback Mountain) and Joe Pirro (Driveways). Fluk is repped by Amotz Zakai, Amy Schiffman, and Kegan Schell at Echo Lake Entertainment. He is also created the recently-announced HBO series Empty Mansions for Fremantle with director Joe Wright (Atonement, Darkest Hour) attached to direct the pilot. "From the moment I heard Vera's story, about how as a high school teenager she organized one of the greatest concerts in history, I knew her story had to be told," said Fluk. "We were immediately exhilarated by Vera Brandes' remarkable female empowerment story. Her strength, courage and sheer belief in herself and the music of Keith Jarrett will entertain and inspire audiences around the world," added Kelliher.

It's heartening to see how gorgeous the Italian cities of Verona and Mantua still are in the new "Romeo & Juliet," so well-preserved that the Immortal Bard himself would recognize them -- if he actually traveled through Europe.
Those stunning locations -- Renaissance ballrooms and porticoes, squares, bridges, gardens and parlors -- almost make up for the rather disastrous casting at the heart of this production.
How 17-year-old Hailee Steinfeld managed to look younger and more romantically innocent than she did in "True Grit," which filmed four years ago, is anybody's guess.
Almost as big a mystery is why they cast this overmatched actress as the teen who inspires this immortal line: "I never knew true beauty until this night." Romeo (Douglas Booth) doesn't get out much. Apparently.
The callow boy has tossed aside his infatuation for one forbidden girl from the Capulet clan for another, and as cruel as it is say so,...

This weekend, an American cargo ship gets hijacked by pirates in "Captain Phillips," the world's most famous star-crossed love story is retold in "Romeo and Juliet," and Machete goes to Mexico to take down an arms dealer in "Machete Kills."
From director Paul Greengrass ("The Bourne Ultimatum," "United 93"), "Captain Phillips" stars Tom Hanks as the titular seaman and tells the true, harrowing story of a container ship, the Alabama, hijacked by Somali pirates.
Carlo Carlei's ("Fluke") adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" tells the classic story of the forbidden love between teens from feuding families. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit" and Douglas Booth ("Lol"), along with Danielle Lewis ("Homeland") as Lord Capulet.

It seems like it’s been quite a long while since we’ve seen a new version of the Bard’s classic Romeo & Juliet pop up. Perhaps Shakespeare’s most famous play, the last adaptation I can recall was Baz Luhrmann’s outstanding 1996 version with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the star-crossed lovers. However, you may recall that it was set in contemporary times, making 1968 the last time we saw a classically-set, big screen adaptation of the play, with Franco Zeffirelli’s Oscar-winning film.
This makes a classic telling of the tale long-overdue, but luckily the team of director Carlo Carlei (The Flight of the Innocent, Fluke) and Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, Downton Abbey) have taken care of that problem for us. This time around the doomed lovers are to be played by Douglas Booth (The Pillars of the Earth) and Oscar nominee (Hailee Steinfeld).

While certain repeated cinematic adaptations get quite long in the tooth with each retelling . see A Christmas Carol - certain stories inevitably deserve to get told over and over, as viewed through the eyes of the next generation. Author and master of the horror genre whose trademark was fear
When James Herbert published his first novel, The Rats (1974), at the age of 30, it was an immediate bestseller. Copies of the book – produced cheaply in paperback with a vicious-looking rodent on the cover, its jaws open and eyes bloodshot – flew off the shelves, the initial print run of 100,000 selling out in three weeks. Behind its cover star, the title was printed in bold, red type. Edition after edition came out and changes were subtly made. The rat remained but eventually it was the name of Herbert, who has died aged 69, that dominated the cover.
Herbert's early novels were literary nasties. The Rats opens with a tramp being devoured alive. Soon afterwards, a baby is killed and partly eaten before her mother can rescue the mutilated body. The Fog (1975) continued his uncompromisingly explicit, visceral exploration of horror. Innocent villagers and...

Dash sat down with CNN's Piers Morgan on "Piers Morning Tonight" to discuss the influx of criticism that came after endorsing Romney in a Twitter post on Sunday. That tweet spurred angry and sometimes racist responses from those who scoffed at Dash, of Black and Hispanic descent, supporting the Gop nominee.

Romeo and Juliet: Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth Starring Lol‘s Douglas Booth and True Grit‘s Hailee Steinfeld, a new version of Romeo and Juliet is currently being shopped around at the Cannes Film Festival. Partly financed by Austrian design house Swarovski, this latest adaptation of Shakespeare’s love story was written by Academy Award winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and directed by Carlo Carlei. A Best New Director David di Donatello nominee for The Flight of the Innocent (1993), Carlei’s previous English-language foray, the Matthew Modine vehicle Fluke, was a major box-office flop in 1995. In recent years, Carlei has worked on Italian television; his most recent TV movie was a remake of Roberto Rossellini’s Il General della Rovere (2011), starring Pierfrancesco Favino in the old Vittorio De Sica role. According to the Los Angeles Times blog 24 Frames, producer Ileen Maisel wants “every teenager in the world to come see” Romeo and Juliet.

Although I’m not necessarily jumping for joy at another re-working of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the addition of Paul Giamatti into Carlo Carlei‘s adaptation puts me a bit at ease. Variety reports that the actor will play Friar Lawrence, an advisor to both Romeo and Juliet, who is a key character in the beloved play.
True Grit‘s Hailee Steinfeld signed onto the project back in April to play Juliet, with British actor Douglas Booth cast as her tortured lover Romeo. Gossip Girl‘s Ed Westwick and Let Me In‘s Kodi Smit-McPhee play the lover’s cousins, Tybalt and Benvolio, respectively.
Julian Fellowes, of recent Downton Abbey fame, is writing the script, as well as producing alongside Amber Entertainment and Italy’s Indiana Production; this marks the first English-language feature for the company. Carlei‘s been dabbling in TV movie work in recent years, making...

This upcoming millionth adaptation of Romeo & Juliet is an odd nut. On the directing side it's sorely lacking, with Carlo Carlei at the helm. Carlei's most notable film to date was Fluke, the sorta creepy story about the human reincarnated as a dog. With “True Grit” breakout star Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet, Holly Hunter as The Nurse and Ed Westwick as Tybalt, this latest incarnation will be directed by Carlo Carlei who is probably best known for 1993’s “Flight of the Innocent,” but who also directed the 1995 ghost dog movie “Fluke.” On the plus side, the film has a script by Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park,” “Downton Abbey”) so we're hoping there…...

An up and comer, a recognizable character actor and a seasoned veteran have all signed on to very different projects. The up and comer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, best known for his awesome work in The Road and Let Me In, is reportedly circling the role of Benvolio in Carlo Carlei's new film adaptation [1] of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet along side Haliee Steinfeld, Holly Hunter and Ed Westwick. Michael Pena, the recognizable character actor, has joined the already impressive cast [2] of Gangster Squad, Ruben Fleischer's upcoming true-life gangster film starring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin. Then the seasoned veteran, Corbin Bernsen joins the female-centric gambling story [3] Lay the Favorite starring Bruce Willis, Vince Vaughn and Rebecca Hall directed by Stephen Frears. Read about each film, and role, after the break. The new Romeo and Juliet, directed by Carlo Carlei (Fluke) is quietly nabbing quite the cast.

Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick is going to end up joining True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld in another film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Steinfeld will play Juliet and Westwick would be taking on the role of Tybalt. Holly Hunter is also in the film and will play The Nurse. Romeo still has yet to be cast.
This new film version of the story is being directed by Carlo Carlei (Fluke, The Flight of the Innocent) based on a script from Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, The Tourist). Honestly, how hard can it be to adapt an already written script?
The movie is scheduled to shoot in Italy later this spring and reportedly has a budget in the $15 million range. In past film adaptations, the role of Juliet has been cast with older actresses. Steinfeld is currently fourteen, which fits fine because the the Juliet is described as "almost fourteen,...

Great Hope Springs, the movie in which Meryl Streep plays one half of a married couple spending a week of marriage and sex therapy with a famous therapist (Steve Carell) has gone through a few possible male leads. Jeff Bridges was mentioned early on, and James Gandolfini looked like a possibility at one point. (Those were when Mike Nichols was going to direct [1], but now The Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel will make the film instead.) Tommy Lee Jones was next [2] in the casting rumor series, but now he definitively has the gig playing husband to Meryl Streep. That's a great pairing, and while the director may not be my top choice, I'm still as interested in watching these two actors trade barbs as I was when the idea first came up. The synopsis for Great Hope Springs is after the break, along with news of new gigs for Maggie Gyllenhaal and Holly Hunter.

[1] Hailee Steinfeld may have lost Katniss Everdeen to Jennifer Lawrence, but she'll be portraying an even more famous teenager soon. The young True Grit star is reportedly in talks to join Carlo Carlei's Romeo and Juliet as Juliet. For those who've somehow managed to get this far in life without knowing about Romeo and Juliet, the classic William Shakespeare play centers around a pair of teenagers from rival families who meet and fall in love, with tragic results. Kind of like Romeo Must Die, only with more emphasis on the romance angle and less on the martial arts stuff. Carlei's earlier features include 1993's The Flight of the Innocent and 1995's Fluke. The script is being written by Julian Fellowes, whose past work includes Gosford Park, last year's The Tourist, and the critically acclaimed Brit series Downton Abbey. The $15 million picture is scheduled to begin shooting in Italy later this spring,...

Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld is in talks for a new big screen version of Romeo & Juliet that has a fresh script by distinguished writer Julian Fellowes.
This latest adaptation will be directed by Carlo Carlie who is probably best known for 1993’s Flight of the Innocent, Golden Globes Foreign-Language Nomenee, but who also directed the 1995 ghost dog movie Fluke with Samuel L. Jackson starring.
Carlei has said the film will be set in classic Shakespearan era and will bring the iconic characters to life for a new generation that doesn’t have its own version yet.
The indie adaptation is scheduled to start shooting in Italy later this spring with a budget around $15 million, but that doesn’t mean some big name thesp won’t be attached to the project. No suggestions yet on who might play Romeo – I’m sure some young Justin Bieber fans are slathering a big heap.

Hailee Steinfeld is in talks for the lead role in an indie adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, according to THR. The new version is being directed by Carlo Carlei (Fluke, The Flight of the Innocent) based on a script from Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, The Tourist).

Don't get me wrong, I loved Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon's performances, but Steinfeld's was great.

Hailee Steinfeld is potentially planning to play the lead in an indie adaptation of Romeo and Juliet , says a story at The Hollywood Reporter . One of the most adapted tales of all time, this version is being helmed by Carlo Carlei ( Fluke , The Flight of the Innocent ) and will feature a script from Julian Fellowes ( Gosford Park , The Tourist ). Steinfeld, who met with critical acclaim for her performance in last year's True Grit , would play the part of Juliet. In the play, the character is described as "almost fourteen," though film adaptations often cast older actresses in the part. If, as is planned, the film shoots this summer, Steinfeld will be fourteen for the duration of the production. Formerly said to be attached to the project was actress Lily...

The last time a novel by Michael Ondaatje was adapted for the big screen, things went fairly well. That, of course, was The English Patient, Anthony Minghella’s Oscar-hoovering epic drama. And now producer Paul Maslansky is hoping that lightning will strike twice with his adaptation of Ondaatje’s novel about the birth of jazz, Coming Through Slaughter.Maslansky first optioned the property three years ago, but finally has a script that’s good to go, by Mark Bailey, which has been given the green light by Ondaatje. Maslansky’s production partner, Lars Bloch, is currently in Venice looking for distributors and potential directors. If it goes ahead, Coming Through Slaughter – which follows the life story of Buddy Bolden, a New Orleans-bazed cornettist credited with being a major player in the birth of what is widely hailed as the only American-created art form – will stick out like a sore thumb on Maslansky’s CV.
