No one in the film world had a Year in Music quite like Edgar Wright. Almost right on the heels of “The Sparks Brothers,” his documentary tribute to a duo celebrating its 50th anniversary of eccentric rock heroism, came “Last Night in Soho,” a bloody supernatural thriller that nearly doubled as a movie musical, thanks to a soundtrack jam-packed with mostly female-fronted British pop hits of the mid-1960s.
Wright, who’d earlier proved himself as no slouch in the soundtrack department with heavily music-based films like “Baby Driver,” joined Variety‘s Music for Screens conference for a keynote conversation in which he spoke in considerable detail about the philosophies of how he treated music in these two strikingly different projects. Watch our chat, above, or read a lightly edited version of our conversation, bellow.
Variety: First, let’s just talk about what culminated for you this year before we get to the individual projects.

That crispness you feel in the air? It’s award season, dawning seemingly earlier every year. To kick off this round of accolades and honors, the Cinema Eye Honors — the largest annual celebration and recognition of the nonfiction film artform and the creators of those films — has announced its “shorts list” of ten short documentaries that serve as semi-finalists for Nonfiction Short Filmmaking Award at the 11th Annual Cinema Eye Honors. The list includes an exciting selection of new talents, as only one of the listed filmmakers (Laura Poitras) is a previous Cinema Eye nominee and winner, indicating a fresh crop of new documentary talents to watch.
From this list of ten semi-finalists, five or more films will be named as nominees for the award. Those nominees, plus the contenders for nearly a dozen feature film categories, will be announced on Thursday, November 3, in San Francisco during Sffilm Doc Stories.

Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig is bringing a new anime series called Neo Yokio to Netflix this month. Here's the trailer...
What a time to be alive.
Netflix just dropped a trailer for an anime original series from Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig starring Jaden Smith, Steve Buscemi, Jude Law, Susan Sarandon, Desus and Mero, Jason Schwartzman and Tavi Gevinson, amongst others.
From the looks of the trailer, Neo Yokio is part-satire, part homage (a la Hot Fuzz), a series that aims to send-up many of anime's most ubiquitous tropes, while also paying tribute to them.
Neo Yokio, a play off of the 'New Tokyo' setting in anime classic Akira, is "a postmodern collage of homages to classic anime, English literature and modern New York fashion and culture." It follows the adventures of Jaden Smith's Kaz Kaan, a broken-hearted, pink-haired demon slayer who cares more about shopping,...

DaguerrotypeDear Fern,I've heard a lot of mixed things here about Terrence Malick's Voyage of Time, so I'm very pleased at your enraptured praise. Did you know from the first moment that you liked it so much? Sometimes, in those rare special occasions, you know right off that a film is great. From the first shot of Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women, a grainy Montana landscape grayed by winter, with hills so soft in they could be painted on, and a train arcing its way towards the camera, it is clear this film is special. Based on stories by author Maile Meloy, the film takes the unusual form of a sequence of three stories, all set in small town Montana, and each foregrounded on a woman and her conflicted yearning.Laura Dern is a lawyer whose client (Jared Harris) in a dead-end malfeasance lawsuit gets increasingly dejected and unhinged...

Patty Jenkins (Monster) has seemingly done good work on the film, at least as far as we can tell from its trailers; Gal Gadot is unstoppable, and is it really possible to hate anything Chris Pine is in? I hear you cracking your knuckles and scrolling down to the comments to hit me back on this - Into Darkness wasn't that bad! Ok...ok, it was a little bad.
See related Arrow season 5 episode 22 review: Missing Arrow season 5 episode 21 review: Honor Thy Fathers Arrow season 5 episode 20 review: Underneath
Anyway, our BBFC have now dished up a certificate for Wonder Woman, and it'll be a 12A.

Tucker & Dale, Sightseers, Grabbers and more, as we highlight 21 horror-comedies well worth your time...
Hey y’all! I’m back to-
“Shaun Of The Dead!” someone shouts.
Alright, alright, settle down now. Settle down. I’ve got something to tell you. A lot of you know what I’m about to say. Some of you might sense what’s coming. Regardless, let’s all take a knee.
Deep breath in.
Deep breath out.
Okay.
…Shaun Of The Dead is almost 12 years old.
I know. It hurts. We’re super old and it’s a problem. Kids who were born the day Shaun came out are in secondary school. They’ve probably hit puberty. They’re feeling weird feelings about each other that they can’t explain. Their parents are probably starting to piss them off. Their parents who are probably us. We could be the parents of...

Editor's Note: I asked Team Experience to tell us what they're thankful for this year during the holiday weekend. Here's Jose in the cinematic spirit.
Jose here. This year I’m thankful...
For Hardy with puppies. And Godard with Roxy.
For Keira, Kristen and Kirsten.
For snakes made out of clouds.
For cruising in French lakes (even with killers on the loose)
For movies about toys that didn’t treat me like a kid.
For Marion x 2. For Joaquin Phoenix x 2. For Chastain x 4 (she doesn't make it seem like bragging either!)
For Dan Stevens’ abs and killer acting chops (pun intended).
For Shia in the buff.
For Carrie Coon and Jenny Slate (can they play sisters some day?).
For Swedish films about skiing that reminded me how much I love Mike Nichols.
For Broadway actors in movies (I'm looking at you Jefferson Mays in Inherent Vice).
For Edward Norton's tan.

Pottermore In a new interview conducted by Emma Watson for Wonderland, Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling revealed that she made a mistake by having Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley end up together at the conclusion of the series, calling the pairing "a form of wish fulfillment." Realzing that she might be "breaking people's hearts" by saying that, Rowling apologized to the fans, but said that Hermione should have married the title hero instead.
I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.
Watson, who played Hermione in the WB-produced movies based on the books, agreed with Rowling and said that many fans will too.

Actress Tania Raymonde may be best known to millions worldwide as Alex Rousseau from ABC's series "Lost", but it's her latest television role that very well could define the next chapter of her career.
On MTV's newest genre series "Death Valley", Raymonde plays Carla Rinaldi, the no-nonsense badass member of the Utf (Undead Task Force) that hits the streets of the San Fernando Valley nightly to keep the peace amongst the humans living there and the undead masses now lurking everywhere- including zombies, werewolves and vampires. Each night Carla and her smooth-talking partner John "John John" Johnson (Texas Battle) hit the streets of the Valley in hopes of keeping the streets (and each other) safe and undead free.

Melancholia won her an award at Cannes – and plunged her into controversy. The actor talks about Von Trier's Nazi moment, her battle with depression – and Charlotte Gainsbourg's breasts
Melancholia begins with a wedding and ends with a funeral. Actually, the new film from Danish provocateur Lars von Trier ends with the apocalypse – a funeral for everyone, as a vast planet rears up on the near horizon, lighting up the lawn and setting the birds chattering. Watching the movie at this year's Cannes film festival, Kirsten Dunst was surprised to find herself giggling, as if this was some sort of happy ending. "That's one thing you can say for the end of the world," she says. "It solves a lot of problems."

Just before the holidays we had a the UK trailer debut for Paul, and now we have the official Us theatrical trailer from Apple. There isn’t too much of a difference, this one is just a little spruced up. Superbad and Adventureland director Greg Mottola is collaborating with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost for this alien road-trip comedy. The cast also includes Seth Rogen, Kirsten Wiig, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader, Jane Lynch and Sigourney Weaver.
Synopsis:
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever. For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base.

The first Cougar Town episode of 2011, "No Reason To Cry," delivered laughs and tears, as we finally heard Grayson tell Jules he loved her.
However different they are from each other, Jules and Grayson really work. In fact, they are probably one of my favorite TV couples. Lets' hear it for Team Juleson!
But before Grayson manned up, Jules became the Angel of Death by killing three various animals. First, there was the dove. Who saw that one coming? Better question, who waters their plants with a skillet? That bird didn't stand a chance.
Next, she runs over a squirrel and finally steps on a lizard. Anyone from Florida knows how gross it is to step on just a lizard's tail, but the whole enchilada? Pretty wretched.
Andy and Ellie, as usual, get into a fight for something Andy did wrong. But this time Ellie really had some good points.

After Superbad and Adventureland director Greg Mottola is collaborating with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost for an alien road-trip comedy. Now that Dunst is no longer Mary Jane, we examine her film future.

Monday's announcement that "Spider-Man 4" was as dead as the Green Goblin reportedly came as a shock not only to fans, but also to the series' stars, who were at least entertaining the possibility of returning. Few, however, have had as much riding on the sequel as Kirsten Dunst.
Undoubtedly the most divisive of the series' leads (whereas you'd have a hard time finding any Spidey fans who hate on Tobey Maguire or James Franco), it's been a long time since Dunst has had a hit. Aside from the little-seen "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People," Dunst's last non-Spidey films were the back-to-back-to-back duds "Elizabethtown," "Wimbledon" and "Marie Antoinette" nearly a half-decade ago.
Something tells us that Kirsten might have a few bucks in the bank, and...

Review: So Simon Pegg is starring in another movie. Should we expect something along the lines of Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz? The answer is a definite no. This comedy, with a splash of romance, will surprise you with its wit and intelligence. It is very funny with a touch of charming. Simon gives glimpses of the depth of his acting talent. He really shines in this picture and pretty much takes it over, but not from lackluster performances of his co-stars, it’s just that he was that good. His co-stars also shine with decent performances. Kirsten [...]...
