History repeats itself in this ingenious but surprisingly heartfelt sci-fi, which takes the premise of Groundhog Day and fashions from it a poignant statement about life and mortality. Refreshingly for the genre, it focuses on a middle-aged woman — a scientist-slash-physicist, even — whose 55th birthday and final breath will occur within the same week. But though there is an element of resistance to the latter, Omni Loop is unusual in that it isn’t simply about breaking the cycle; Bernardo Britto’s film is about facing the inevitable, gently phasing out the genre elements to reach an understated but emotional climax.

The race by the AMPTP and the WGA to get a deal done by sundown had plenty of folks thinking back to a very memorable episode of Entourage — Doug Ellin, included.
The creator of the HBO comedy was reminded Sunday on X about how the weekend negotiations between the AMPTP and the WGA sounded “like an Entourage storyline.”
Ellin replied, “And on Yom Kippur it sure does.”
Not sure what he’s talking about? Think back 16 years ago to the season 3 episode dubbed “The Return of the King.” The 2007 episode kicks off with the boys at the race track while Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) is arriving at temple before the start of Yom Kippur. That’s when he runs into Nick Rubenstein (Adam Goldberg), the neurotic son of movie producer Phil Rubenstein who is making the movie Medellin with Paul Haggis.

I’m not sure “Ozark” ever improved upon “Kaleidoscope.” The first season’s eighth episode takes place entirely in flashback, as director Ellen Kuras and writer Ryan Farley bounce between the pivotal choices that precede the Byrdes’ fateful decision to start laundering money. Wendy (Laura Linney) is fighting through an extended depression, brought on by a complicated miscarriage, and she’s doubly frustrated by a job market closed off to a woman who spent a few years having kids. Marty (Jason Bateman), who’s typically mocked for his cautious nature as “the numbers guy,” is being courted by Camino Del Rio (Esai Morales), who wants to hire the Chicago-based financial advisor to handle his accounts, even after (or because) Marty spots suspicious activity on the books.

More than 30 years after he first donned that infamous Batman suit, Michael Keaton is stepping back into familiar territory. On Monday, Keaton’s agency confirmed that he will appear as Batman in the forthcoming movie “The Flash,” which began filming in the U.K. this week. The film won’t be hitting theaters until 2022, which gives you plenty of time to catch up Keaton’s “Batman” movies and a bunch of other films in his catalog such as “Beetlejuice,” “Birdman,” “Multiplicity,” and “The Founder.”
The 69-year-old actor played Batman in the 1989 blockbuster directed by Tim Burton, and its 1992 sequel, “Batman Returns.” Pretty much all of the “Batman” movies are currently streaming on HBO Max.

Frank Perry’s version of the shootout at the O.K. Corral shapes up as a fine western and an even better drama — the revisionist angle is supported by an excellent script and thoughtful, challenging characterizations. Tombstone’s frontier folk are dirty, vulgar and corrupt, but Stacy Keach and Faye Dunaway generate a rough-hewn romantic harmony. Harris Yulin’s Wyatt Earp is a revelation as well — if this were modern times Earp would get a lock on city hall politics and go into the land development racket. The beautifully filmed movie looks terrific on disc. Alex Cox delivers a solid audio commentary as well.

Have you ever watched and enjoyed a movie, but by the time it ends, you're not really sure what it was trying to accomplish?
That's how I felt after watching The Sounding, the feature debut of its co-writer, director, and star, Catherine Eaton.
Eaton co-wrote the film with Bryan Delaney. It's the first feature for both, but they had some pull, landing an admirable cast, up for the challenge of a story about a young woman named Liv (Eaton).
For all intents and purposes, Liv is an ordinary woman. But she has an extraordinary story -- she hasn't spoken a word in years with no discernable explanation.
Liv's grandfather, Lionel (Harris Yulin), in ill health and concerned over his grandaughter's future in light of his imminent passing, calls on the son of an old friend, a neuropsychologist named Michael (Teddy Sears), to help Liv when the time is right.

In the spring 2017, one-time “All My Children” star Catherine Eaton’s directorial debut, “The Sounding,” made its premiere at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, where it picked up the Audience Award in the “New American Visions” section. Since then, Eaton — who also stars in the film, which she wrote with Bryan Delaney — has taken the film around the world, picking up jury awards, audience awards, and even a best cinematography win for Dp David Kruta at the Woodstock Film Festival. , Eaton’s film is finally being released more than 40 months after its Minnesota debut, offering a well-drawn character study wrapped inside an ambitious plot.

Pete Hamill, the Brooklyn-born journalist whose street-savvy writing style and editorial hand lent an authentic, even quintessential voice to city tabloids The New York Post and The Daily News over a 50-year-career, died today in his native borough. He was 85.
His brother, the writer Denis Hamill, told The New York Times that Hamill fell at home on Saturday after returning from a dialysis treatment. He was taken to Brooklyn’s Methodist Hospital were he died apparently from kidney and heart failure.
Hamill began his newspaper career at the Post in 1960. Over the next decades he would write for the Daily News, Newsday, The Village Voice, The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, Playboy, Rolling Stone and many other publications. Along with columnist Jimmy Breslin, Hamill popularized a streetwise writing style that could seem equal parts Norman Mailer, Damon Runyon and the millions of outer borough residents he both championed and chronicled.

Above: Candy Mountain“How much of this film is composed, and how much is improvised?” The obvious question posed by Robert Frank’s first film (coauthored by painter Alfred Leslie), Pull My Daisy (1959), is also posed, sometimes less obviously, by the authored and coauthored Frank films that follow it—an unwieldy filmography that has on occasion become even harder to access because of the unwieldy ways it was financed or put together. To wonder whether they’re Frank or just frank is arguably another way of interrogating their relative degrees of sincerity or subterfuge, non-fiction or fiction, single or collective authorship. And it’s ultimately our call whether any shot in a Frank film corresponds to a declarative statement or a question—something that might also apply to his better known, more celebrated, and noncollaborative still photography. “After seeing these pictures,” wrote Jack Kerouac of The Americans, “you end up...

Brian De Palma’s 1983 saga of hoodlum Tony Montana is an exceptional remake that’s become a classic almost by default — it’s too strikingly original to ignore. De Palma did the Latin male stereotype no favors, while bringing attention to the outrageous drug trafficking aided by law enforcement and criminal banks in a shameful decade of excess. Al Pacino added a page to his catalog of great performances, and the careers of Michelle Pfeiffer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio were duly launched. De Palma gives this one ‘classical’ direction: he skips his former film school cinema games and homages to Hitch the Master.

Need to catch up? Check out our previous Murphy Brown recap here.
Murphy Brown tackled the #MeToo movement this week, as Murphy was rocked by a painful memory from her distant past.
Murphy’s TV show has to complete a mandatory sexual harassment seminar, which everyone groans about — except Pat, who’s excited to participate. (“Today, I am a man!”) Murphy blows off the dire warnings from the seminar’s leader — “The show’s called Murphy in the Morning! They’re not firing me!” — until the guy reminds her about Matt Lauer… and Charlie Rose… and Bill O’Reilly. But...

"I saw an untapped market..." Taking all bets! Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled All Square, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year and played at a few other fests. All Square stars character actor Michael Kelly as a down-on-his-luck bookie who befriends an ex-girlfriend's son and begins taking bets on his youth baseball games, creating chaos in the community. Sounds like fun, actually. The full ensemble cast of this indie includes Pamela Adlon, Jesse Ray Sheps, Josh Lucas, Tom Everett Scott, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Harris Yulin, Yeardley Smith, Jonathan Rosenthal, Craig Walker, Jay Larson, Neal Huff, and Brett Davis. This looks good - like Scorsese meets Linklater, telling an amusing small-town crime story surrounding kids' baseball games. Check it out. Jason Bateman earned his third and fourth Emmy nominations this year for his work on the Netflix series “Ozark.” Bateman received a Best Drama Actor nomination, which some awards pundits predicted, but he surprised many by also receiving a Best Drama Directing nomination for the show. Bateman had previously received two Best Comedy Actor nominations for his work on “Arrested Development” (2005 and 2013), so can this comedy favorite now win for a dramatic role?
Bateman joins Bill Hader (“Barry”) and Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) on the list of this year’s actors who also managed to receive directing nominations for their shows. For his Emmy episode submission for his acting nomination Bateman has selected the final episode of the season, entitled “The Toll.” (That episode is also his submission for directing.)

The central question on Ozark, a Netflix original series that premiered last year, is how far will people go to protect their family and themselves. After financial planner Marty Byrd (delicately played by the always great Jason Bateman) gets caught up in a money laundering scheme that goes horribly wrong, he relocates his dysfunctional and fragmented family from a prosperous suburb of Chicago to a rural vacation spot in the Ozarks. His hope of keeping his family alive is complicated greatly by the town locals, drug cartels, FBI agents, and his family barely keeping everything together. As season two approaches, catch up on how all this intense drama ended last year.
Marty Thinks Quick
With the drug-dealing Snell family proving to be dangerous foes and the cartel closing in, Marty and his family try to flee. Initially stopped by one of the cartel's enforcers, they sneak away thanks to their...

Though major studios used to crank them out by the truckload, today the movie musical is a fairly infrequent occurrence — not just because they’re commercially risky but because the genre itself is an inherently ambitious undertaking. Ranging from “Once” to Damien Chazelle’s pre-“La La Land” romance “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” there have been some moderately successful attempts at making indie musicals on a micro-budget, but the question still lingers of whether audiences are willing to accept a modern movie in which people sing out their emotions.
In a risky departure from a résumé otherwise dominated by broad comedy, Josh Klausner gives it a stab with “Wanderland.” Different though it may be from his 1999 debut “The 4th Floor” — a quasi-horror thriller with surreal touches — this oddball effort is more an exercise in low-key quirkiness set in a slightly alternative universe where everything but our protagonist is a little “off.

"Fate left you a footstep..." The Orchard has debuted the trailer for an indie comedy titled Wanderland, from director Josh Klausner, which premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival on Long Island last year. Wanderland stars Tate Ellington as Alex, a guy who decides to escape his life in New York City and ends up at a "Enchanted Cottage" on Long Island. There he "ends up lost on a surreal musical all-night odyssey of misadventures." Whoa. The cast includes Tara Summers, Victoria Clark, Jack Dishel, Harris Yulin, Adepero Oduye, and Dree Hemingway. Klausner explained that the film is about "connection in the modern world — how we’re more technically linked to each other than ever before, but we’re in danger of losing the magic of direct, face to face human interaction, with all of its surprises and unknowns." How fun. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Josh Klausner's Wanderland,...

Cults and their leaders have always equally repulsed, fascinated, and terrified me. The repulsion and terror are obvious markers for any sane person, but some would rather not have it in their lives at all, thank you very much. This is also a lucid and healthy response. But in horror we look for the cathartic in the carnal; and while Bad Dreams (1988) spends a great deal of effort mining a very similar vein as A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), it succeeds in carving out its own modest slice in the late ‘80s landscape.
Released stateside in April by Twentieth Century Fox, Bad Dreams made back its $4 million dollar budget opening weekend, but petered out after it pulled in just over $9 million total. A profit, yes, but not the big numbers they were hoping for based on what they thought was a foolproof Elm Street format. Oh, and...

What is it about our quest to not simply help those in need, but solve what is supposedly ailing them? What in the history of mankind shifted focus from wanting to understand that which was different to assimilating (eradicating) it? Greed. Power. Sanctimony. Ego. There are an infinite number of words able to answer these questions and yet no one has actually solved the issue. Or perhaps no one can. Utopic visions presume that it is possible: peace on earth. We strive to fight for a world that is truly colorblind and free whether to choose language, religion, sexuality, or love. The United States was built on these freedoms, but from a very specific worldview perpetually lording one above all others. We remain stuck in that box still.
So what then do we do when it’s discovered everything we’ve been educated and raised to believe is false? How...

Arthur Penn’s detective movie is one of the best ever in the genre, one that rewards repeat viewings particularly well. Gumshoe Harry Moseby compartmentalizes his marriage, his job, his past and the greedy Hollywood has-beens he meets, not realizing that everything is interconnected, and fully capable of assembling a world-class conspiracy. Gene Hackman tops a sterling cast in the film that introduced most of us to Melanie Griffith.

“Ozark” isn’t your typical summer binge. The dark Netflix series (literally and figuratively) is the antithesis of a relaxing beach read, an invigorating vacation, or light fun in the sun. Frankly, at times, it’s hard to watch.
But it’s also addictive. As much as viewers might want to look away from some of the more challenging scenes, Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams’ drama pushes audiences to keep going, even when “Ozark” very nearly goes too far.

Netflix have released the official final trailer and artwork for the highly anticipated series Ozark. Jason Bateman, who serves as an executive producer and director, stars as Marty Byrde, alongside Academy Award nominee Laura Linney as his wife Wendy. Except for the job of Marty, a Chicago financial advisor who also serves as the top money launderer for the second largest drug cartel in Mexico. Quietly, Richard Gere is consistently making rather good movies, telling interesting stories and taking on nuanced, intriguing roles. Netflix has unveiled the first look at their new show Ozark, which debuts on the subscription service later this summer – you can check out the first trailer and debut images below!
The new show is directed and executive produced by Jason Bateman (The Family Fang, Office Christmas Party), who also stars in the show as Marty Bird, a financial planner who relocates with his family from a Chicago suburb to Missouri Ozarks, a summer resort community. The move has to do with Marty also being a top money launderer and after a job backfires, the second biggest Mexican drug cartel comes for them.
Bateman will direct half the episodes of the 10-episode series and marks a return to television series directing for the actor, who previously directed episodes of Arrested Development amongst others, as well as 2013’s Bad Words and 2015’s The Family Fang, which co-starred Nicole Kidman and Christopher Walken.

The Byrdes aren’t bad people, they just did a bad thing.
Ok, maybe that’s the wrong Netflix crime drama about a family that finds itself in over their head after some poor decision-making by a character played by someone who previously starred in one of the greatest TV shows of the 2000s.

“Bloodline” jokes aside, this is a fine-looking teaser for “Ozark,” the latest drama series from Netflix, starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Bateman plays Marty, your ordinary family man, who just so happens to be in charge of a money laundering scheme for a Mexican drug cartel. When Marty’s unconventional occupation suddenly shifts from a viable way of supporting a family to a surefire way to endangering one, the race is on to flee their comfy Chicago life into the wooded, aerial-photography-friendly environs of the Ozarks.

With the premiere set for July 21st, you might hope to have a little more to go on than a teaser trailer, but at least we get a look at something for Netflix’ Ozark.
The teaser doesn’t offer much, but we at least get a look at the mood and perhaps get a sense of how dark this thing may go.
Jason Bateman stars as Marty Byrde, a financial advisor who launders money for a drug cartel from Mexico. Things go wrong, as they are wont to do when serving as the more or less expendable money man for criminals, and Marty has to hide his wife (Laura Linney) and kids. He decides upon the Missouri Ozarks and, we have to imagine, hilarity does not exactly ensue.
It’s already a show that has all it needs going for it. A clever concept, and two of the better actors working today.

Wamg is giving away to one lucky reader a poster from the new film Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer signed by Richard Gere & director Joseph Cedar.
Norman Oppenheimer (Richard Gere) lives a lonely life in the margins of New York City power and money, a would-be operator dreaming up financial schemes that never come to fruition. As he has nothing real to offer, Norman strives to be everyone’s friend, but his incessant networking leads him nowhere.
Always on the lookout for someone willing to pay attention to him, Norman sets his sights on Micha Eshel (Lior Ashkenazi), a charismatic Israeli politician alone in New York at a low point in his career. Sensing Eshel’s vulnerability, Norman reaches out with a gift of a very expensive pair of shoes, a gesture that deeply touches Eshel. When Eshel becomes Prime Minister three years later,...
