Kjersti Paulsen was named the winner of the Semiramis Award for excellence in casting for her work on “The Innocents,” directed by Norway’s Eskil Vogt, at a ceremony Saturday at Torino Film Festival.
The psychological thriller about four kids who suddenly discover they have hidden powers celebrated its world premiere at Cannes, with Variety’s Jessica Kiang praising its “exceptional child performers.”
“The producer, director and I agreed on the importance of finding the right children and gave it the highest priority. All other characters had to wait,” said Paulsen before her win.
“My job is to create an environment where the children feel secure and can join in the role-play we bring them into. Then I need to determine the children’s capacity for empathy, their ability to listen to co-players, imagination and self-confidence.”

Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." Glancing at the cast list for “American Hustle,” the film looks like a reunion. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro worked together with writer-director David O. Russell on “Silver Linings Playbook” just last year; Amy Adams and Christian Bale worked with Russell on “The Fighter” in 2010. And all five of those actors received an Oscar nomination for their work in those respective films. Lawrence and Bale even took home the statue. But when it came to casting the film, casting director Mary Vernieu, who has worked with Russell on all of his films since 1999 except “The Fighter,” was very excited to introduce new faces to the director—particularly actors from Boston, where the film was shot. “It was interesting to see who was there, and it was a big cast and there were definitely a lot of people that we had to find,” says Vernieu, who works at Betty Mae Casting.

We all acknowledge that Hollywood is as much a state of mind as a place on the map. Now, with various states passing film-production incentive measures and independent moviemakers dwelling in all corners of the country, that sentiment has never seemed truer. Understandably, as The New York Times recently noted, there are critics of these programs — increasingly vocal, especially in light of the world's current economic mess. Yet other voices continue to support the basic idea of spreading the tinsel among various towns. In light of today's production climate, Back Stage recently investigated the health (or lack thereof) of five important moviemaking markets around the country.New Mexico: Dawn at the Oasis Casting director Jo Edna Boldin began making forays into New Mexico when the state implemented an attractive film-incentives package — including a 25 percent tax rebate and a loan program offering up to $15 million per project.
