Timothy Bottoms Gets His Pound Of Flesh

By

Alex Simon

Timothy Bottoms became an overnight sensation at the height of the so-called “Easy Riders and Raging Bulls” era, after landing the leading role in The Last Picture Show (1971), Peter Bogdanovich’s film about the social and sexual rites of small town Texans in the early 1950s. Internationally acclaimed for his portrait of Sonny, a sensitive kid struggling to find his way in the harsh landscape of post-war America, the then-twenty year-old Bottoms suddenly found himself not only in-demand as a rising young star, but a major celebrity, as well, with younger brothers Sam (who co-starred in The Last Picture Show), Joseph and Ben following in their older brother’s footsteps, making names for themselves on stage and screen. Bottoms reprised the role of Sonny for Picture Show's 1990 sequel, Texasville.

52 films unfairly rated lower than 6 stars on the IMDb

23 February 2012 4:12 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Democracy is a flawed concept. Here are 50 films that the IMDb voters would unfairly have you believe are worth no more than 5.9/10…

Six out of ten isn’t a very good score, really. It’s barely over half marks. 60 per cent. It’s alright, but it’s not great. You wouldn’t be proud of getting six out of ten on most kinds of tests, would you? So you might assume that any film that scores under six stars out of ten on the IMDb isn’t very good – possibly even terrible.

But that’s not always the case. Averages don’t tell the whole story; anything that’s potentially controversial or divisive will end up with a score that suggests most people weren’t that bothered about it, since high and low scores will be averaged – and IMDb users often exaggerate their scores anyway, giving a film one star »

War Horse Press Conference – Spielberg Speaks

12 January 2012 3:14 AM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

If there's one subject that Steven Spielberg has proved he can do well over the years, it's war. Having directed such weighty and classic musings on it such as Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998) (both of which netted him Oscars), slightly more overlooked movies like Empire Of The Sun (1987) and even the, shall we say, interesting project that was 1941 (1979), it would be fair to say that he knows the genre pretty well. Oh, and he also executive produced the critically lauded television miniseries Band Of Brothers (2001), and that's just counting the terrestrial conflicts.

With his latest film War Horse, however, based on the moving and poignant children's book by Michael Morpurgo originally published in 1982, he is not looking at the First World War in terms of the many young soldiers who were pulled into the so called 'war to end all wars' but is instead focusing on the equine army, »
