My first time in Egypt was last year at El Gouna Film Festival and I feel honored by the privilege of being here for a second year. It’s a small enough festival that you feel you can actually see all the films (even if you can’t), and yet it is large enough to be internationally cosmopolitan. The international mix of filmmakers, executives, writers and journalists is unique.
Opening Night was thrilling in an open air atrium leading to a huge open air screen, an audience dressed in their most elegant clothes in a setting that went beyond anything I had ever seen at a festival before.

In remembrance of the genocide in Rwanda, the streaming site Mubi is screening the acclaimed documentary My Neighbor, My Killer, by Anne Aghion. The film, shot over the course of a decade, chronicles the process in which courts were run by the community after the tragedy. In these community-run courts, neighbors judged and sentenced one another. Mubi has made the film available in over 200 countries around the globe for the next 30 days, and now is your chance to see it! Here's more about the film: Gacaca (Ga-cha-cha), which literally means "justice on the grass," is a form of open air, citizen-based justice which the Rwandan government put in place in an attempt to deal with the...

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide, and in commemoration we're proud to present Anne Aghion's acclaimed My Neighbor, My Killer world wide. Filmed over the course of a decade, the film follows the Gacaca Tribunals—community-run courts where citizens judge their neighbors and perpetrators. The film has screened at numerous festivals such as Cannes, the San Francisco and Vancouver International Film Festivals, and the Human Rights Watch Film Festival, where Aghion won the Néstor Almendros award for courage in filmmaking. My Neighbor, My Killer is a powerful inside look at a people’s attempt to rebuild their nation.
"Anne Aghion asks a lot of tough questions in My Neighbor, My Killer, the fourth and last in her series of films about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. But the most difficult, posed on the posters for her new film, may be this: after the killing has ceased, and order has been restored,...

Could you ever forgive the people who slaughtered your family? In 1994, hundreds of thousands of Rwandan Hutus were incited to wipe out the country’s Tutsi minority. From the crowded capital to the smallest village, local ‘patrols’ massacred lifelong friends and family members, most often with machetes and improvised weapons.
Announced in 2001, and ending this year, the government put in place the Gacaca Tribunals – open-air hearings with citizen-judges meant to try their neighbors and rebuild the nation. As part of this experiment in reconciliation, confessed genocide killers are sent home from prison, while traumatized survivors are asked to forgive them and resume living side-by-side.
Filming for close to a decade in a tiny hamlet, award-winning filmmaker Anne Aghion has charted the impact of Gacaca on survivors and perpetrators alike. Through their fear and anger, accusations and defenses, blurry truths, inconsolable sadness, and hope for life renewed, she captures the emotional journey to coexistence.

The only big film festival in my own backyard is back and it runs from November 12th through the 22nd. While it caters more to heavy run fest material and arthouse film, they do have some of the more interesting films playing this year:
Ryan Ward's excellent Son of the Sunshine which is one of my favorite films of the year. (review)
The weird, lengthy comedy The Revenant (review)
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
and much more. Program after the break!

Children of Invention
Two first-generation Chinese kids in suburban Boston find themselves on their own after their desperate mother is unwittingly involved in a pyramid scheme and arrested. Older brother Raymond takes a page from her marketing seminars to start creating a life for himself and his sister - casting a strange, pint-sized reflection on the American Dream.

If it wasn't taking so long to upload my video clips, you could already be watching my interview with documentary filmmaker Anne Aghion about the gachacha trials in Rwanda. Look for it Thursday (I hope). Right now, here are the reviews of today's films. Inglourious Basterds *** 1/2 (Out Of Four) -- At this stage of the festival, a movie has to be really good just to keep you awake. Well, Quentin Tarantino kept me awake from 8:30 in the morning till 11:00 (about two and a half hours) with his Ww II B movie Inglourious Basterds. It begins with two gripping introductions: one is a terrific set piece in a French country home where a farmer and his three beautiful daughters are sheltering Jews who hide under the floorboards when the Nazis show up for another inspection. The other introduction...

Coming to Cannes is usually a no-brainer for any film that gets invited. But for film-maker Anne Aghion, accepting an invitation to bring her documentary My Neighbor, My Killer was a genuine risk. For a decade, she has been documenting life in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide. Aghion has released a series of acclaimed documentaries that have been seen in Rwanda and around the world, focusing especially on the gacaca trials. This film was set to debut in Rwanda as part of the 15th anniversary ceremonies marking the genocide. Then Cannes made its offer with the usual proviso that the film could not debut elsewhere. Aghion deliberated and regretfully chose to decline the honor of the initial Rwanda premiere in exchange for the chance the film had to be seen by the worldwide media and get its story out to...

Premiering in Cannes in Un Certain Regard, Anne Aghion's penetrating and transfixing documentary, My Neighbor, My Killer, is the culmination of a decade-long filmmaking quest to address one of the most difficult questions facing citizens, communities, tribes, religious groups and ethnic factions around the world today: "Could you forgive the people who slaughtered your family?" In 1994 hundreds of thousands of minority Tutsis were slaughtered by Rwanda's Hutus, with villager killing fellow villager, cousin killing cousin. The Rwanda genocide has been well covered in the media, but less focused upon has been the Gacaca Tribunals, open air citizen hearings instituted in 2001 as a way for the Rwandan people to participate in a system of...

So the line-up for this year's Cannes Film Festival was just released today and I damn near fainted from the awesome. This year's competition has got to be the biggest, baddest one in many years, with so many famous auteurs throwing down with their latest films. Who will get the coveted Palme d'Or?
A sampling of just the biggest names who will be in competition: Pedro Almodovar (Broken Embraces), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds), Park Chan-wook (Thirst), Jane Campion (Bright Star), Michael Haneke (The White Ribbon), Gaspar Noe (Enter the Void), Ken Loach (Looking for Eric), Johnnie To (Vengeance), Lars von Trier (Antichrist), Ang Lee (Taking Woodstock).
Not only that, but out of competition, we have Pixar's Up as the opening film, Bong Joon-ho's Mother, Hikorazu Kore-eda's Air Doll, Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, and a new documentary by Michel Gondry...

For the most part, the majority of the films Variety speculated would be included at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival made the final list. The only ones that didn't were Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant and Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro out of the group I listed from their early report. However, to make up for it they have added Alejandro Amenabar's Agora starring Rachel Weisz, which is big news if you ask me. Listed below is the early list thanks to Variety. Wow, the speculation this year was pretty heavy on some great genre fare we've been tracking and while we're missing some stunners like Mr. Nobody and a couple others I've been clocking but won't mention, we do get the following:
Antichrist from Lars Von Trier
Enter the Void from Gapar Noe (we've been waiting on a trailer for a long time)
Vengeance from Johnnie To
Thirst from Chan-Wook Park
Inglorious Basterds from Qt
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus from Terry Gilliam
As well as so many others. One of these years Qe will be headed to Cannes for reviews, but not this year folks, (unless we can find a French correspondent or someone donates a few large, hah!)
Full list after the break. via Variety
Opener
"Up," U.S., Pete Docter, Bob Peterson
Closer
"Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky," France, Jan Kounen
In Competition
"Bright Star," Australia-u.K.-France, Jane Campion
"Spring Fever,...

Okay, can I just tell you now, that I wish I can go :sad
But work schedule prevents me from going to Cannes (May is ratings period for TV and thou shall not leave your post!). So, I'll just regale myself with fantasizing I was there, or, by counting the days before I can see the films in/out competition!
And this year? It's great! Quentin Tarantino ("Inglourious Basterds") will face off with Ang Lee ("Taking Woodstock") while fighting Pedro Almodovar ("Broken Embraces") and kicking Jane Campion ("Bright Star") to the curb.
It's going to be fierce!
But before all the competition hoopla, Disney/Pixar will entertain everyone by opening the event with "Up" (the first ever animated film to kick off the festival!).
Oh, and out of competition? The last film made by Heath Ledger, "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" by Terry Gilliam.
Here's the complete line up, oh,...

- Traditionally, the spots in the Out of Competition, Midnight and Special Screenings are reserved to Hollywood Studios looking to promote a soon-to-be-released summer title, socially relevant documentary film or some genre film from South Korea. I'm surprised that neither Angels & Demons, nor Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins took up a spot. Out of the trio of titles in the Out of Comp section, the film journalists will be flocking to see Heath Ledger's last perf, but I'll be more interested in how Terry Gilliam changes horses mid-stream with The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Alejandro Amenabar's Agora is one more heavyweight production grabbing a slot, and thus makes this Cannes edition a great one for Spanish film. A well liked filmmaker in France, Robert Guediguian (Marius et Jeannette) hasn't visited with Cannes often, so The Army of Crime which was tapped for a possible spot in the Competition, will
