The most awaited film this year at the Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, had its world premiere Thursday night, with the dystopian epic decades in the making landing a seven-minute standing ovation.
Coppola, the 85-year-old director and five-time Oscar winners, bowed as the lights came up inside the Grand Theatre Lumiere. He was congratulated by his Cotton Club star Richard Gere and got a hug from Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux as the ovation carried on.
Said Coppola to the crowd finally: “Thank you all so much — it is impossible to find words how I feel.” He then introduced those around him — including his granddaughter and son and collaborator Roman Coppola and sister Talia Shire. He called his cast “family” and emphasized the movie’s end message: “We should pledge allegiance to our families…that children should inherit a beautiful world from us.”

The character in Megalopolis played by Adam Driver with idealistic passion, Cesar Catilina, is a visionary genius intent on saving New York City by building a utopian future, dislodging the elite ruling class in the process. In many ways, Cesar’s mission, both noble and egomaniacal, seems a direct reflection of the dogged determination of Francis Ford Coppola to get this movie made at any cost. The “fable” could almost be an allegory for the pursuit of a dream in which an auteur can still make a monumental epic without compromise in a Hollywood that marginalizes art to focus purely on economics.
The first sparks of the idea came to Coppola in the early 1980s and he’s been developing it on and off ever since — doing table reads with major-name actors, shooting 30 hours of second unit footage in Manhattan in 2001 and then almost abandoning the project six years later when funding proved elusive.

Ever thought about what happens when a legendary director’s relentless pursuit of authenticity collides with cutting-edge technology and a stellar cast? In the newest film from The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, Adam Driver portrays Caesar Catillina, an architect trying to rebuild New York into a science fiction city after it is destroyed.
A recent article by The Guardian described the dramatic behind-the-scenes action on the set of Coppola’s much-awaited flick, Megalopolis, including a riveting account of Driver’s first day on the set. It seems that the director’s disdain for digital effects led him to make some questionable choices when it came to creating certain visual effects for the film.

Digitally creating that particular effect would have been quick and easy, according to one of the crew members. Nevertheless, Coppola devoted “half of a day” to an activity that could have been completed in ten minutes.

More than five decades ago, Al Pacino and Marlon Brando collaborated on their first project together, which ended up being a smash hit: 1972’s The Godfather. Yet, as tremendously as both the actors performed as prominent characters in the film, they apparently didn’t receive the same and fair treatment while being applauded for the masterpiece’s success at the Academy Awards.

That said, multiple rumors started floating around about Pacino’s hatred for his co-star Brando, because of how unfairly he was treated in front of him at the Oscars. However, as it turns out, surprisingly enough, all of those rumors were nothing short of mere pieces of gossip, considering how Pacino even seemed disturbed while addressing and refuting all such rumors.

Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" has been in the works for decades, and at last, the first clip from the film has been released ahead of its Cannes Film Festival premiere later this month. It's just two minutes long, but the film finally feels real, not like a vanished dream.
We at /Film named "Megalopolis" one of our most anticipated movies of 2024, and it should be one of yours too. It's the "Godfather" director's first film since 2011's "Twixt," and it was self-financed (meaning creative freedom for Coppola). It also boasts an incredible ensemble, led by Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito.
In "Megalopolis," a city is destroyed in a natural disaster. Idealistic urban planner Cesar (Driver) and Mayor Frank Cicero (Esposito) clash on their visions to rebuild the city, with Cicero's daughter Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel) coming between them. Tom Cruise and Robert Pattinson are two of the most iconic actors in Hollywood, with one climbing the ladder like there’s no tomorrow and the other ruling over it. While the two of them have never shared the big screen together, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they haven’t met either. Out of the many movies that both of them have individually done, it was a small skit that brought them together.
Robert Pattinson in The Batman (2022)
In a rather humorous sketch, Cruise managed to ground Pattinson in a way that forever became an embedded memory in the fans’ eyes. Both their skills are extraordinary on their own, so much so that some of the biggest blockbusters have their names on it.

The Godfather series directed by Francis Ford Coppola is still regarded as one of the iconic trilogies of Hollywood. While the first two films were runaway blockbusters, the 3rd film did not fare as well at the box office and also received lukewarm responses from critics. Nevertheless, the franchise became a cult classic thanks to memorable performances from Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, and others.

While the actors were defining factors in the success of the films, Coppola’s decision to include his daughter Sofia Coppola in The Godfather 3 ironically proved to be a mistake. Having replaced Winona Ryder for the role, the filmmaker received a lot of criticism for her performance, but did not get disheartened as she was fully aware that her future did not lie in acting.

Meryl Streep has been regarded as one of the most successful people of all time. Having broken records with how talented she is, normality has long escaped her life. However, many might not know that the actress faced one of the most human tragedies of them all; loss.
Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada
Before getting married to Don Gummer, Streep was famously involved with her Measure for Measure co-star, John Cazale, who was best known for his work on projects like The Deer Hunter and The Godfather. The two shared a very close and intimate connection that lasted until his passing from lung cancer. Many have found the actress to be very brave to have gone through such sorrow while simultaneously working.
However, it is when greatness is in the company of greatness that they are finally allowed to be people. Al Pacino is at the same level of fame as Streep.

The Godfather without Al Pacino does not feel right at all, and it’s truly impossible to imagine another actor playing Michael Corleone. Fans have got Diane Keaton to thank because her chemistry with the actor landed him the job.

Have you ever thought about what it feels like to be part of something legendary yet somehow stand apart from its central narrative? Diane Keaton felt like a fish out of water in the male-dominated world of Francis Ford Coppola’s classic 1972 epic crime film The Godfather.
The Oscar-winning actress, 78, was once unfiltered about a memory that’s as raw as it is real: feeling like an “outcast” while working in Coppola’s cinematic tour de force, The Godfather. Notwithstanding the enormous success of the movie and her own remarkable performance, Keaton’s role in the film alongside actors like Al Pacino strengthened her place in cinematic history.

However, she never felt more important on set than her co-stars in this film. The Francis Ford Coppola film was inspired by the same-titled Mario Puzo 1969 novel, which had already garnered a sizable fan base.

Francis Ford Coppola is one of the most revered directors in Hollywood. He enjoyed tremendous success with the Godfather franchise, even if the third and final installment polarized the fans. Regardless, the filmmaker won critical acclaim, and it engraved his name in the annals of cinema history.
Coppola can be credited for adapting the book for the big screen so flawlessly, with each role carefully chosen. However, the production for the third film was mired in problems, accentuated by the fact that Robert Duvall refused to return to complete the trilogy.

Francis Ford Coppola established himself as an esteemed director quite early on in his career. He put together an incredible lineup that brought Mario Puzo’s novel to life, with Al Pacino and Marlon Brando leading the cast.

Until recently, if one were asked to name some of the best films of preeminent 1970s filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, it would be easy to pick the big hits. “The Godfather” (1972), “The Godfather II” (1974) and “Apocalypse Now” (1979) are definitely his most iconic and respected films. You’d also be hard-pressed to find a person aged 25-50 who isn’t keenly aware of his adaption of S.E. Hinton’s mandatory high school assigned “The Outsiders” (1983) or his classics “Peggy Sue Got Married” (1986) and maybe even “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” (1988). Yet lately, Coppola’s “The Conversation” (1974) has entered the chat as a somewhat under the radar, low-key masterpiece from the filmmaker, and this year the film celebrates its 50th birthday.

I don’t think so.” The age demographics in Hollywood are about to skew a lot younger because a pre-teen has pitched an idea that is soon enough going to be written for the screen – and it’s a wonder it hasn’t been made yet. Here we have Home Alone meets The Godfather, in which we imagine one scene where Kevin McCallister jumps on his parents’ bed, only to find a decapitated horse head at the foot of it. The title? Little Wiseguy.
But the pitch doesn’t come from a desperate studio suit but rather a 10-year-old named Connor Esterson, who you may actually be familiar with, as he co-starred in last year’s Spy Kids: Armageddon. And while Esterson has very likely seen Home Alone numerous times around the holiday season, he admits he...

It appears Shari Redstone remains firmly opposed to breaking up Paramount Global.
Redstone, president of National Amusements Inc. — the controlling shareholder of Paramount Global — was “unconvinced” by Apollo Global Management’s $11 billion offer to buy Paramount’s film and TV studio, the Financial Times reported, citing anonymous sources. The reported price tag would be a premium over the market cap of the entire company. Instead, per the Ft report, Redstone is preferring to continue negotiating a deal with Skydance’s David Ellison, in partnership with RedBird Capital and Tencent, to sell Nai (and then merge Skydance with Paramount Global).
Shares of Paramount Global closed down 5.5% Thursday following the Ft’s report, amid an uptick in broader market indexes. That came after the stock popped nearly 12% following the Wall Street Journal’s report that Apollo had made an $11 billion offer to acquire Paramount Pictures and the Paramount TV studios group.

Apollo Global Management, a major private-equity firm, has submitted an $11 billion bid to acquire Paramount Pictures and the Paramount TV studios group, according to a published report.
The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, reported that Apollo Global offered $11 billion for Paramount Global’s film and TV studio business. That would apparently not include CBS, Paramount Global’s cable networks like BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV, or the streaming business unit that includes Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
Apollo’s reported offer for Paramount’s studio operations is greater than the market capitalization of Paramount Global in its entirety ($7.3 billion as of March 19). The proposed transaction may include some assumption of Paramount Global’s long-term debt (which stood at $14.6 billion at the end of 2023).
Shares of Paramount Global closed up 11.8% Wednesday on the Journal report, to $12.51/per share, boosting its market cap to nearly $8.7 billion. The stock remains well below its 52-week high of $24/share.

When it was released back in 1995, Michael Mann’s film Heat became a global hit. This action thriller starring acting legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, as well as then-upcoming actor Val Kilmer, was one of the biggest films of the decade and has become a pillar of the genre. Although Mann had already been an established director by then, Heat further cemented his place in the history of cinema, making him one of the most important creators in the history.
Mann had a relatively long “dry streak” after 2009’s Public Enemies (Blackhat is basically a forgotten movie), to use this term, before last year’s Ferrari was released to solid reviews, with praise directed at Driver’s performance. His return to the spotlight also reignited rumors about a possible sequel to Heat, something that Hollywood has been gossiping about for some time, with Heat 2 becoming a more palpable possibility at the time.

Al Pacino has spoken out about his awkward Oscars moment, which has generated much conversation since the award ceremony on March 10.
The Godfather star presented Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer with the Best Picture award but failed to name the other nine nominated films before opening the winning envelope. The list of contenders included Poor Things, The Zone of Interest, Barbie and more.
Typically, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has the presenter for Best Picture list each film before announcing the winner, so viewers were confused when Pacino skipped this tradition.
“There seems to be some controversy about my not mentioning every film by name last night before announcing the Best Picture award,” the actor said in a statement. “I just want to be clear it was not my intention to omit them, rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually through the ceremony.

The films of Francis Ford Coppola, at their core, are all about family. That theme goes for behind the camera as well as in front of it; according to interviews with Coppola on the Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD special features of the "Godfather" films, the director wished for the actors portraying the Corleone crime family to feel as much like a real family as possible before cameras began rolling. So, prior to making "The Godfather," Coppola arranged for the primary family members — Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, John Cazale and Talia Shire — to meet at an Italian restaurant in New York City, have dinner together and improvise as their characters the entire time.
With all that preparation, and the fact that the filmmakers were adapting Mario Puzo's 400-page novel into what became a three-hour movie whose narrative spans the length of a decade on screen,...

Amidst the acclaim that The Godfather received from all fronts, there was one influential critic of the movie — Frank Sinatra. The beef between Sinatra and the film began even before the start of filming. The singer and actor believed that one character in Mario Puzo’s novel, that of Johnny Fontaine, was modeled after him. On one occasion, Sinatra had a heated confrontation about this with Puzo where he threatened the author.
Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone in The Godfather
However, his threats on another occasion did not seem to bother singer Al Martino, who played the brief role of Johnny Fontaine in the film. In the end, all the efforts of Frank Sinatra to ruin The Godfather became futile as the movie became the biggest hit in Hollywood upon release.

While Francis Ford Coppola is, and always will be associated with his greatest work namely The Godfather trilogy, the prolific director was instrumental in kickstarting the careers of many A-list celebrities today. The director cast a bunch of young actors for his 1983 film The Outsiders which was based on the 1967 novel of the same name by S.E Hinton.

The film went on to gain critical acclaim and cult status over the years. More significantly, it catapulted the young actors in the film to superstardom. In the 40th year of the film’s release, the Oscar-winning director revealed his off-beat audition process that resulted in the casting of these actors.

The actor became synonymous with his character Rocky Balboa in the boxing world and played a crucial role in widening the reach of the sport in America. "The Godfather" trilogy is one of the most quotable series of films in cinema history. While the second and third installments of the series have their memorable lines, it's 1972's "The Godfather" which contains the bulk of the trilogy's most indelible dialogue. To illustrate the point: it seems everyone and their father has a Marlon Brando-as-Don Corleone impression in their back pocket (whether that impression is any good or not is another matter), and while the main reason for that is due to Brando's unique take on the character, it wouldn't be half as popular to do at parties and whatnot without the excellent lines from the film to back it up.
Most of this dialogue comes courtesy of "Godfather" author Mario Puzo, with co-screenwriter and director Francis Ford Coppola choosing to include the bulk of Puzo's prose in his screen adaptation. Although some of the dialogue in...

You wanna get nuts? C’mon, let’s get nuts. Peter Bart: A Biden-Trump Rematch Dims Cable News Prospects And A Print Media Biz Already In Trouble
“Sequels suck, whether you’re making them or watching them.” So said one storied filmmaker in rejecting a rich movie deal (details below), and he’d likely react the same if offered Biden vs. Trump.
The New Hampshire primary results this week reinforced media alarm over a projected 2024 rerun that could fracture ratings and reduce print coverage to “meaningless dribble,” in the words of one publisher.

Spielberg: The First Ten Years by Laurent Bouzereau (Insight Editions) and Steven Spielberg: All the Films by Olivier Bousquet, Arnaud Devillard, and Nicolas Schaller (Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers)
I am not sure what Steven Spielberg obsessives like myself did to earn two lengthy, photo-backed, hardcover career appreciations, but I’m not complaining. Steven Spielberg: All the Films runs for nearly 500 pages and covers literally everything, from the director’s contributions to Rod Serling’s Night Gallery to The Fabelmans. Along the way are some unique insights, surprising facts (Leonardo DiCaprio was approached to play Tintin?), and the inclusion of some of his 1980s television work. And Spielberg: The First Ten Years is just as engaging, and even more in-depth.

Sofia Coppola may come from film royalty, but she’s an artist all her own.
The daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia Coppola began her career as an infant — appearing as the newborn baby of Connie (Talia Shire) in the baptism scene of “The Godfather.” From there, she had a supporting role in his films “Peggy Sue Got Married” and the third “Godfather” film, filling in for the latter after original star Winona Ryder dropped out. Moving over to directing as an adult, she stunned critics with her 1999 debut feature “The Virgin Suicides,” an adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ book about five mysterious sisters and their troubled home lives.

MGM+ is eschewing a “one size fits all approach” to global expansion, the streamer’s bosses have said, as they detail international strategy several months after rebranding.

“We don’t believe in local ‘one size fits all’ programing we believe every territory has individual needs,” Brearton told Content London. “This is less than a year old and the results have been extraordinary. We have accelerated our expansion because of that.”
Wright detailed international strategy, pointing out that rights and content commissioning will differ in different territories, with more rollouts beyond...

Just before he reaches the age of 28, Timothée Chalamet will very likely achieve his third Golden Globe (and first Best Comedy/Musical Actor) nomination for “Wonka.” Following his previous bids for “Call Me By Your Name” and “Beautiful Boy”, this notice would make him the youngest man to have ever vied for all three possible film Golden Globes, smashing a record set by 35-year-old James Caan in 1976. He would also make history due to the fact that he would be the third actor recognized by this organization for playing Willy Wonka, thus putting the fictional chocolatier on a very short list of film characters that have inspired at least three Golden Globe nominations.
Directed and co-written by Paul King (“Paddington”), “Wonka” serves as an origin story for its title character, who was first introduced in the 1964 Roald Dahl book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Chalamet puts a relatively youthful spin...

One of Keaton’s career breakthroughs was the 1972 picture The Godfather. Keaton ended up playing the wife of Al Pacino’s famous mobster Michael Corleone, which led to a brief relationship between the pair. The Francis Ford Coppola feature was based on the Mario Puzo novel of the same name, which already recruited a sizable fanbase. But Keaton admitted in an interview with People that she knew next to nothing about The Godfather’s source material.
“I think the kindest thing that someone’s ever done for me … is that I got cast to be...

Sofia Coppola, whose awards contender “Priscilla” is now in theaters, is just one of several filmmakers whose parents were already major names in the industry. Both her father, Francis Ford Coppola, and her mother, Eleanor Coppola, are directors, as is her brother Roman.
Here are some of the most notable second-generation directors in Hollywood, including Jason Reitman, Rob Reiner, Mario Van Peebles and Colin Hanks.
We’re also a big fan of Francesca Scorsese’s TikTok videos with her dad, Martin Scorsese, especially the one where he auditions the family dog.

A movie’s central character needn’t be someone we admire, but he should probably be someone we’re drawn to, someone we vibe with in sympathetic fascination, who we feel we know and understand even as he crosses over to the dark side. Few movies have lived out that dynamic more cathartically than the underworld dramas of Martin Scorsese.
“Mean Streets,” the tale of low-rung Little Italy mobsters that Scorsese made 50 years ago (I think it’s still his greatest film), is about Harvey Keitel’s ladder-climbing numbers runner, but the most explosive character is Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy, a self-destructive firecracker who doesn’t “give two shits about you, or nobody else,” a quality that would make him repellent if he weren’t so hypnotic. In “Taxi Driver,” De Niro’s Travis Bickle is a loner who can’t connect, but he connects with the audience in every frame.
