The cold war between Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan, escalated by the former being played by Ranbir Kapoor in a biopic, refuses to simmer down. Now mutual friends of the two actors are very worried about the situation. "They are very similar individuals and therefore get hurt about the same things. We all thought the cold war would calm down after some time. But neither Bhai (Salman Khan) nor Baba (Sanjay Dutt) is willing to budge. Basically, Bhai wants anyone but Ranbir to play Sanjay Dutt. But, Baba adores Ranbir and won't change his mind," says a common friend of the two superstars. For those who came in late, Salman Khan's aversion to all things Ranbir are traceable to his behaviour with Katrina Kaif. Matters have gotten so messy between Dutt and Salman that the two refuse to be seen at any public event together. Says a friend, "If...

FX’s The Americans will soon wrap up season four. The Cold War-era drama, which first aired in 2013, saw a drop in viewerships with season two and three. The Americans has never been a juggernaut in the ratings, which has often made fans worry the show wouldn’t end on its own terms. FX has remained a major supporter of […]

Stop! Don't touch that dial... if you like your atom-age propaganda straight up, MGM has the movie for you, an expensive 1946 docu-drama that became 'the official story' for the making of the bomb. The huge cast includes Brian Donlevy, Robert Walker, Tom Drake, Audrey Totter, Hume Cronyn, Hurd Hatfield, and Joseph Calleia. How trustworthy is the movie? It begins by showing footage of a time capsule being buried -- that supposedly contains the film we are watching. Think about that. Mom, Apple Pie, the Flag and God are enlisted to argume that we should stop worrying and love the fact that bombs are just peachy-keen dandy. “Company Business” features Gene Hackman and Mikhail Baryshnikov in an espionage thriller directed by Nicholas Meyer. The Cold War is over and a former CIA agent is called out of retirement to exchange an imprisoned Russian agent for a captured American pilot. The movie was released in 1991 just as the Soviet Union ceased to exist and the Russian Federation was born. Old tensions between East and West remain and the movie tries to be a tense “Cold War” style thriller.
Hackman is Sam Boyd, a retired CIA agent who is using his skills as a corporate spy. Mikhail Baryshnikov is Pyotr Ivanovich Grushenko, a former Soviet spy serving time in an American prison. Sam is called out of retirement to exchange Pyotr for the American being held by the Russians. Glasnost and perestroika indeed, or so it would appear. Welcome to L.A. (Kino Lorber)
Alan Rudolph’s first major feature under the tutelage of his mentor and frequent collaborator Robert Altman demonstrates the filmmaker’s penchant for grooving interweaving narratives into intoxicating tones. Altman turned the City of Angels into a crashing melodramatic kaleidoscope in 1993’s Short Cuts, but Rudolph prefers jarring effects to come through more organic moments of minor gestures. Take the film’s opening shot: after establishing its cast of characters over the soulful tunes of Keith Carradine’s title song, Rudolph cuts to a shot looking up from the back of a cab, the palm trees barely visible over the cab’s leather seating. The camera pans over to Geraldine Chaplin’s ponderous face until she suddenly turns...

Originally slated to release this month, Maximum games have delayed their upcoming Cold War stealth game, Alekhine’s Gun, to February 9 of 2016. In a press release, they cited their reasons behind this push as being a desire for a “comprehensive, synchronized global launch”.
The title takes place during the Cold War, running from the tumultuous end of World War II through the 1960s. The player is dropped into the shoes of the ex-kgb assassin, Agent Alekhine, who teams up with the CIA to untangle a dangerous conspiracy.
With a range of classic stealth manoeuvres, a focus on choice-based game play, and open plan levels, the game is aiming to throw an intriguing spin on the stealth genre by placing characters in a historical framework.
Christina Seelve, CEO of Maximum Games, had this to say about Alekhine’s Gun slipping to 2016.

What did we learn about the new Netflix series from Marvel's Jessica Jones trailer? Our Us chums investigate...
The first trailer for Jessica Jones appears almost as mysterious as our title heroine. While Daredevil drew on decades of comic book mythology, and thus was able to pack a ton of fairly recognizable Marvel moments into its first real trailer, Jessica Jones is based on a relatively small handful of stories featuring some of the more obscure characters in Marvel's catalogue.
That being said, if you've read Marvel's Alias comics by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos which are the basis for the Jessica Jones Netflix series (and if you haven't, do yourself a favor and do so immediately) there's lots of familiar moments that get touched on here.
Just in case you haven't seen the trailer, or just want to watch it again, here it is, then we'll start digging deep.

The Cold War spy drama Bridge Of Spies is Steven Spielberg’s best film in years. This Oscar-bait film, based on the real events around the American U-2 pilot was shot down and captured over Soviet Russian airspace, features a script co-written by Joel and Ethan Coen, a cast headed by Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance, the renowned British actor some audiences might know from the BBC’s bloody historical drama series “Wolf Hall” that played on PBS, and photography by the Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, whose past films include “Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”
All that talent comes together in the perfect blend to create a highly entertaining film. The film is set in the late ’50s-early ’60s Cold War, the period between the Commie-hunting hysteria of the McCarthy era and the Cuba Missile Crisis. Bridge Of Spies dramatizes two interconnected spy cases,...

In advance of their new film "Bridge of Spies," director Steven Spielberg and star Tom Hanks have been making the rounds, including an illuminating press conference and a chummy satellite Q&A with audience members and People Magazine's Jess Cagle (watch the latter here). Next Friday, Steven Spielberg geeks like myself will (hopefully) be turning out in droves to buy tickets to the master director’s latest film, the very serious-and-handsome-looking Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies.” The Tom Hanks-starring period drama has garnered mostly favorable responses following its premiere at the New York Film Festival (our own Rodrigo Perez seemed to like it just fine… here’s his review) and is poised to be a contender during the upcoming Oscar season. Big Brother could well be watching you, according to Steven Spielberg.
At a press conference for his new film Bridge of Spies, the director compared today's cyber-hacking to spying during the Cold War.
"The Cold War was polite in terms of the way we were spying on each other," Spielberg noted (via The Guardian).
"The way it is today, you just don't know that when you're watching television, is television actually watching you? There are just so many eyes on all of us."
Spielberg's latest film is based on the real-life story of Brooklyn lawyer James B Donovan, who was recruited by the CIA to defend Soviet spy Rudolf Abel. Donovan later arranged Abel's swap with captured U2 pilot Gary Powers.
Adapted for the big screen by the Coen brothers and Suite Française's Matt Charman, the film's impressive cast includes Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan and Sebastian Koch.

While Cannes, Toronto, and Venice premiere some of the year’s best films, no annual cinematic event is better curated than the New York Film Festival, which kicks off this weekend. Those attending will witness, over two weeks, some of the best features this year — and next — have to offer.
A simple copy-and-pasting of the line-up would suffice, but we’ve done our best to narrow it down to 25 selections that are the most worth your time. For honorable mentions, we’re looking forward to the stellar line-up of revivals, including The King of Comedy, All That Jazz, Blow Out, Rocco and His Brothers, Ran, Heaven Can Wait, and The Boys from Fengkuei.
We’ve also reviewed a few titles (The Forbidden Room, My Mother, Chevalier) that we were a bit cooler on. Lastly, the festival announced a sneak preview screening of Ridley Scott‘s The Martian, and one can read our review here.

We're just a couple of months away from the release of Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies. The Cold War–era thriller — which stars Tom Hanks, Amy Ryan and Alan Alda — is the first movie directed by Spielberg since Lincoln in 2012. It was written by Ethan and Joel Coen, and early buzz has been quite positive.
Now we have a question for you: What is the best Steven Spielberg movie? We're going to count any film he directed. Feel free to vote for a 1970s classic like Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind,...

Created by Sam Shaw and directed by Thomas Schlamme, "Manhattan" takes us inside Los Alamos, where during World War II, scientists and their families were locked away from the world to design the world’s first weapon of mass destruction. ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ Review: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer Heat Up the Cold War in ’60s Spy Reboot
After giving us two steampunk-flavored reboots of Sherlock Holmes, director Guy Ritchie has aimed the Wayback Machine to the Golden Age of Kennedy, Khrushchev and, perhaps most importantly, Ian Fleming with “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” based on the 1964-1968 TV show. The Cold War got sexier after the release of the first big-screen 007 adventure, “Dr. No,” and Ritchie’s new movie, set in the early ’60s, harkens back to a time when pop culture had spies, gadgets and deadly dames behind every dust jacket and on every screen, large and small. This new “Man from U.N.C.L.E.

The actor, who shared the story on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday, said the incident happened while he was getting his hair cut that morning.
"I found out today that I have nude pictures on my phone," the 28-year-old told host Jimmy Kimmel.
Hammer said he was talking about his 8-month-old daughter, Harper, with the stylist when he decided to show her some photos of the baby on his phone.

After making two high profile movies set during the Hitler years, Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel is hatching plans for a new film that will unfold during the First World War.
The German filmmaker’s latest feature 13 Minutes dramatises the real-life story of small town carpenter Georg Elser who, in 1939, came close to assassinating Adolf Hitler with a homemade bomb.
The Oscar-nominated Downfall was set at the end of the Second World War, with the Nazi regime in its dying throes. Now, Hirschbiegel wants to turn his attention toward the ‘Great War’ of 1914-18.
“It is very much in the wake of Jean Renoir and of (Stanley) Kubrick,” the German director told ScreenDaily of the project, which is at a very early stage.
Two of its points of reference are Renoir’s La Grande Illusion (1937), the First World War classic about three French prisoners in German captivity, and Kubrick’s anti-war movie, Paths Of Glory (1957).

I interviewed Pierce Brosnan in conjunction with his third outing as James Bond, in Michael Apted's The World Is Not Enough, in 1999. Brosnan was alternately charming, erudite, thoughtful and intense during our two hour chat. His native intelligence shone through it all, as did a sense of decency which many people seem to acquire after enduring and surviving hardship in their formative years.

There are several dangers in becoming a cultural icon, not the least of which is the stigma that your public will forever keep you imprisoned in the mold of your iconography, allowing the recipient a privileged, if imprisoned, existence, particularly if that person is an artist. Sean Connery faced just such a dilemma during the height of James Bond-mania in the mid-60's. A serious actor, Connery desperately wanted to break out of the action hero mold that was British Superspy James Bond,...

The first of Timothy Dalton's pair of James Bond 007 adventures. We look back at The Living Daylights...
This one's strong, if uneven. The Living Daylights has a lot going for it, not least a lean, sharkish Timothy Dalton, tight of smile and cold of eye. Other strengths include a plot that actually goes places (even if they aren’t always the right ones), a great soundtrack, a palpably menacing hitman and the enjoyably retro prominence of the Cold War. All well and good. However, the central villains are a weakness, neither really working alone or as a duo. The girl is admirable but a little trying. The pace sometimes flags and the stakes never rise. Despite a standout fight aboard an aeroplane (as good as Bond gets) the film never quite takes off.

"Foyle's War" sprung from the fertile imagination of Anthony Horowitz, the wordsmith responsible for a shelf full of young adult fiction including the "Alex Rider" series as well as new Sherlock Holmes and James Bond tales. During our recent webcam chat (watch below), he reveals the reason he decided to end the long-running series. "We ran out of war but were all keen to keep going. The Cold War continues, Stalin replace Hitler as an enemy. We reinvented ourselves, left Hastings and came to London and entered the world of intelligence and did six more but I realized I was running out of stories." -Break- Watch dozens of video chats with 2015 Emmy contenders "Foyle's War: Elise, The Final Mystery" marks the last of an impressive 28 telefilms, with Horowitz writing this one solo as he had 21 of the others (he also co-wrote two more). Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks's upcoming project together will see them reunite with composer John Williams.
The Cold War drama's title has also been revealed as Bridge of Spies, named after the bridge between West Berlin and East Berlin's Potsdam, where spy swaps often occurred between the West and Soviet Union.
Producer Marc Platt confirmed the project's name in an interview with The Daily Pennsylvanian.
Williams's involvement has also been confirmed - via his fan club - making Bridge of Spies his 27th collaboration with Spielberg.
The movie tells the true-life story of American lawyer James Donovan, who the CIA used during the Cold War to help rescue pilot U2 Gary Powers from detention in the Soviet Union.

The IMDb synopsis for Jack Strong describes the film as a “gripping spy thriller” that “tells the true story of a man who dares to challenge the Soviet empire.” While it’s true that the story involves spies, soviets and men, there’s not a great that’s daring, gripping or thrilling in this meandering yet overwrought snoozefest.
The Cold War is a rich seam for stories that has quite possibly been excavated of all its jewels at this point (mainly by John le Carré and Stanley Kubrick), so a plot involving state secrets being passed from Russia-controlled Poland to the slickly-suited USA has me stifling a yawn from the opening credits on. “Jack Strong” is the codename given to the Polish colonel disenfranchised by his Communist overlords and embarks upon...

Well that was easy! On this day 25 years ago in 1989, after four and a half decades of tense stand-off, the leaders of the United States and the Soviet Union got together on Malta (of all places) and declared the Cold War fini. (It was, at the time, officially scored as a tie, subject to later recount). “We are at the beginning of a long road to a lasting, peaceful era,” declard Soviet Premiere Mikhail Gorbachev. "We can realize a lasting peace and transform the East-West relationship to one of enduring co-operation. That is the future that Chairman Gorbachev and I began right here in Malta." echoed Us President George H.W. Bush. After generations spent perched on the brink of global annihilation, the world took a deep breath - before moving on to finding other ways of making a mess of itself. The Cold War is now a distant memory; the...

'Henry V' Movie Actress Renée Asherson dead at 99: Laurence Olivier leading lady in acclaimed 1944 film (image: Renée Asherson and Laurence Olivier in 'Henry V') Renée Asherson, a British stage actress featured in London productions of A Streetcar Named Desire and Three Sisters, but best known internationally as Laurence Olivier's leading lady in the 1944 film version of Henry V, died on October 30, 2014.
