It’s 2003 and Jay-Z is planning a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate his retirement from music.
But his bass player is unavailable. Adam Blackstone, a jack-of-all-trades who plays bass, drums, piano, organ, tuba and sousaphone — and is also a songwriter, producer, composer and everything else under the musical sun — is more than ready to step in.
Twenty years later, Blackstone, now 40, is still working closely with Jay-Z; both are Emmy winners for last year’s hip-hop-heavy Super Bowl halftime show. And the musician who has helped everyone from Rihanna to Justin Timberlake shine is stepping into his own limelight.
Rihanna performed during the Super Bowl Lvii halftime show in February.
After winning an Emmy in 2022 for music direction, Blackstone is nominated again. This time, however, he’s a double nominee. Not only is he competing for his work on Rihanna’s explosive Super Bowl performance (a nom...

Prior to the December 23 film release of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” Sony Music has made available the Whitney Houston biopic soundtrack. Featuring 35 cuts, the album clocks in at 2 hours 26 minutes. Scattered amongst some of her greatest hits are various remixes, live performances and never-before-heard gems straight from the vaults.

One heartbreaking revelation is “Don’t Cry For Me,” a prophetic song Houston performed at the Commitment to Life AIDS benefit in 1994. Written by BeBe Winans and Brian Keith Thomas, the song was originally recorded by Winans and his sister, CeCe Winans, for their chart-topping 1988 gospel album “Heaven.” Houston was also featured on that release, collaborating with the sibling duo on “Celebrate New Life” and “Hold Up the Light.”
For the soundtrack, Houston’s live vocals were isolated and placed over a new track produced by Rodney Jerkins.

This month, Rob Thomas reunited with Carlos Santana for “Move,” their first new song together since “Smooth.” But as Thomas told Rolling Stone when discussing the making of that single, it’s not the only project he’s been working on during lockdown: He’s also just wrapped up his first Christmas record.
According to Thomas, the album, scheduled for release this fall, includes originals as well as covers of Ray Charles’ “That Spirit of Christmas” and Bryan Adams’ “Christmas Time.” Duet partners include Brad Paisley, singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson and...

In his first interview with a news outlet since his racial-slur scandal broke six months ago, country superstar Morgan Wallen told “Good Morning America” co-host Michael Strahan that his use of the N-word was the result of being in a drunken climate with friends where they “say dumb stuff together,” and was not meant “in any derogatory manner at all.” He said that in the wake of the furor, he spent 30 days in rehab and has donated $500,000 to Black charities.
Of his “Dangerous: The Double Album” release, which has turned out to be the most popular album in all of music this year, Wallen said, “Before this incident my album was already doing well,” but “me and my team noticed that whenever this whole incident happened, that there was a spike in my sales. The Black church has been, and continues to be, one of the most influential institutions created by Africans in the Americas. PBS’ two-part documentary series, “The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song,” preaches about the role of the church in the post-civil rights era, from the African continent to North America.
The role of the Black church continues to be the subject of lively debate even among those who consider themselves “unaffiliated.” Some argue that it has lost its oracular voice and its ability to mobilize for reform. Others say that the church is very much alive, pointing to the 2008 presidential election, when then-leading Democratic contender Barack Obama from Chicago’s Trinity Church had to publicly denounce what was perceived to be inflammatory language from parishioner Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose now infamous “God damn America!” speech genuinely shocked voters. (Although African Americans were especially less bothered.

A week after being recorded on video using a racial slur, Morgan Wallen has issued a lengthy video statement in which he addresses the controversy, says he’s spoken to leaders in the black community, shares that he’s attempting to get sober, and admits that “my words matter.” He also delivered a message directly to fans who have been defending him: don’t.
“I have one favor to ask. I appreciate those who still see something in me and have defended me. But for today, please don’t. I was wrong.

BMI, the music rights management organization, says it can’t kick Morgan Wallen from its ranks, but has asked the iconic gospel singer BeBe Winans to educate the disgraced country music singer-songwriter about being a more “empathetic person.”
While the country music industry has pretty much turned its back on the epithet-spewing, big-selling Wallen, BMI says it can’t legally follow suit.
“BMI condemns the hateful and offensive racial slur recently used by Morgan Wallen,” the organization said in a statement this afternoon. “While unacceptable, under the terms of our consent decree, BMI is mandated to accept all songwriters who want to be a part of our organization.”
The music rights entity then went on to note that it has “asked BMI’s Advisor and Gospel legend, BeBe Winans, to reach out to Morgan to help him understand the gravity and impact of his words. Our hope is that BeBe...

Booking anyone at all to appear in an Aretha Franklin tribute is an act of nerve, since she was arguably the one performer in pop music history who can be said to have had no real peers as a singer, even in her day, much less ours. With that as a given, “Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul,” airing tonight on CBS, is about as good as these things get, which is a good thing, considering how flagrantly embarrassing it’d be if the show had had to settle for even the B+ list of contemporary singers. The guest list here is a grade above that.
You could make a top 10 list just of your favorite sustained high notes struck during the two-hour telecast. For myself, I’d have to top that list with whatever gritty stratosphere it is that Patti Labelle is entering at the climax of the 1970 hit “Call Me,...

The rise and downfall of televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker is the focus of a new 20/20 special titled “Unfaithfully Yours,” and in this exclusive clip from the episode, Ted Koppel recounts an interview with the Bakkers in the aftermath of their sex and financial fraud scandals.
The Bakkers’ Ptl Club and religious empire was rocked in 1987 when it was revealed that Jim Bakker had used money from both the TV show and their Christian-themed park, Heritage USA, to negotiate a payment for a secretary with whom he had a sexual encounter.

Guess who? Lin-Manuel Miranda has for the past year released a new Hamilton-themed song every month as part of a HamilDrops series. His final installment, "One Last Time (44 Remix)," dropped on Thursday and features none other than former President Barack Obama reciting Alexander Hamilton's spoken lyrics, which come directly from George Washington's 1796 farewell address. The song also features Hamilton star Christopher Jackson as the first U.S. president, who begins to sing along with Hamilton, as well as gospel singer BeBe Winans. "One Last Time" pays homage to will.i.am's song "Yes We Can," which was released to support of...

Lin-Manuel Miranda has so many talented friends, and seemingly every single one has blessed Hamilton fans by participating in his "Hamildrops" series. On Dec. 20, Miranda began reposting all the previously released "Hamildrops" on Twitter, before surprising everyone with the final drop - the remix to "One Last Time." For the final release, Miranda went straight to the top and tapped former President Barack Obama to recite George Washington's address on the aptly named "44 Remix," in honor of the 44th president. The song also features Hamilton star Christopher Jackson and gospel legend BeBe Winans.
This is a full circle moment for Miranda and Obama, who have a long history together. Miranda performed his song "Alexander Hamilton" for the Obamas at the White House in 2009, which inspired Miranda to write Hamilton. The entire cast visited the White House in 2016 to perform a selection of songs and then the following year, Miranda returned...

(Rns) In his new book, "The Whitney I Knew," gospel artist BeBe Winans describes his 28-year friendship with singer Whitney Houston. Winans, 49, and his sister CeCe, performed with Houston, and sang at her funeral in February. His older brother, Marvin, gave the eulogy for Houston at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J.
In an interview, Winans talked about the faith of the woman known just as "Whitney," and why he won't rush to see her in "Sparkle," the movie that opens Friday (Aug. 17).
The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Q: As a grieving friend of Whitney Houston's, why did you decide to write this book?
A: I felt it would enable me to embrace the pain and come to the other side of it and also, in my personal way, paint the picture of who Whitney really was and not allow just the tabloids to describe who she was.

Whitney Houston's closest friend BeBe Winans has admitted that her death caught her loved ones "off guard", as she appeared to be "thriving" after overcoming her troubles. The 'I Will Always Love You' singer passed away at the age of 48 in her Beverly Hilton hotel room in February. A toxicology report later found that Houston had Xanax, cocaine and Benadryl in her system at the time of her death. Winans, who sang at Houston's funeral and has written a book about their relationship titled The Whitney I Knew, has now come out to claim that the star was stronger than ever at the time of her passing, having seemingly conquered her issues with drugs. "Those of us who were really close to Whitney had experienced the real dark times, when that phone call was almost expected," he told The Sun. "We thought she had passed (more)...
