Since Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a list of the most notable Irish actors who have been honored by the Academy with either Oscar gold or a nomination.
1. Cillian Murphy
Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. His best Irish films include Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And as noted above, he is the first Irish-born actor to take home an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

As promised the onslaught of 2023 sports films marches, or in this case paddles, on. Hot on the heels of last week’s historical sports drama, comes this one based on a popular book from a few years ago. It’s not about wrestling, like Friday’s flick, but it is set in the past, though nearly fifty years before the Von Erichs. But there is an Olympic connection. This one concerns a larger team of young men defying the odds and overcoming hardship to go for the gold, rather than fame and fortune.

Ah, sports movies. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. From The Natural to Any Given Sunday, from Rocky to Miracle, there’s nothing quite like watching an underdog defy the odds and emerge victorious. It can even make a sport as seemingly tame as rowing interesting. Or, at least, that’s what Hollywood A-lister/former People’s Sexiest Man Alive George Clooney tries to do with his latest directorial effort, The Boys in the Boat.
Set in 1936 during The Great Depression, The Boys in the Boat is about University of Washington Crew Coach Al Ulbrickson (Joel Edgerton from The Gift) as he assembles and guides his Junior Varsity 8-man rowing team in what he considers to be “the most difficult team sport in the world.” And the group...

Amazon MGM Studios recently hosted a press conference for The Boys in the Boat, directed and produced by two-time Oscar winner George Clooney. Based on Daniel James Brown’s bestseller, the film brings the story of the University of Washington’s scrappy junior varsity rowing team to life, following its members as they vie for positions on the crew through their emergence as underdogs in the 1936 Olympics.
The film’s stars – Callum Turner (“Joe Rantz”), Joel Edgerton (“Coach Al Ulbrickson”), and Hadley Robinson (“Joyce”) – joined Clooney and producer Grant Heslov to discuss the incredible true story that inspired the film, the training process, and the difficulties of shooting a movie dedicated to the sport of rowing.
“It’s a little like F1 in a way, which is you can’t see speed from far back.

The world has changed a lot since “Black Mirror” premiered in 2011; mostly as the lines between fact and fiction blur. The sci-fi show from Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones became shorthand for our bleakest and most dystopic realities, whether that was a caricature rising to the highest office in the nation, technology used to monitor and manipulate human behavior, or alternate realities and artificial intelligence.

Two new major releases in A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella helped to breathe life back into the box office last weekend, though results were stymied by the closure of cinemas across Victoria.
Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II was one of the first films to be delayed by the pandemic. Some 14 months later than planned, the John Krasinski-helmed sequel premiered ahead of the 2018 original, topping the box office with $3.1 million from 542 screens. With previews from the previous weekend, it sits on highly respectable $5.2 million.
In the US, where it is Memorial Day weekend, the horror, starring Emily Blunt, Krasinski, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe is expected to post $58 million by Monday.
Despite a simultaneous PVOD release on Disney+, Cruella, starring Emma Stone in the titular role, still drew a respectable crowd for the Mouse House, bowing at no. 2 from $1.5 million from 452, or $1.6 million with previews.

Dueling Emmas face off in a battle of fashionistas behaving badly, in Cruella, in which Emma Thompson’s Anna Wintour-like fashion giant is challenged by Emma Stones’ Vivienne Westwood-like punk designer upstart. Cruella is more entertaining that one might expect for the live-action backstory of a Disney villain, Cruella de Vil from the animated classic 101 Dalmatians. Cruella is more entertaining that one might expect. Creative, energetic, dark and spiked with campy humor, Cruella is a surprising bit of fun.
Cruella is sympathetic backstory that paints the famous Disney villain as a misunderstood underdog, but one of the best things about Cruella is that it is not another Maleficent. If you liked that Disney villain origin story, you may not care for this one, as Cruella takes itself far less seriously.

Cruella, a new live-action feature about the formation of one of the more notorious villains in cinema history, tells the story of how the title character became as wicked and obsessed with Dalmatians as she ultimately did.
Set in 1970s London, amidst the heyday of punk rock, Cruella follows the path of a young orphan named Estella (Emma Stone) who is determined to carve out a name for herself in the world of fashion. After befriending a pair of thieves, she builds a life as a grifter on the streets of London. However, she still yearns to make a name for herself in the world of fashion as well as exact a modicum of revenge on the person she feels has been root of all of the pain in her life, the Baroness von Hellmann (Emma Thompson).

Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.
With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth movie, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis. (review)
From Focus Features, Phantom Thread is playing in theaters nationwide.

Phantom Thread is a beautiful, seductive drama set in the rarefied world of high fashion in 1950s Britain. Director Paul Thomas Anderson re-teams with Daniel Day-Lewis, his star from 2007’s There Will Be Blood, for a absorbing tale filled with mystery, danger and romance made more fascinating by Daniel Day-Lewis’ electrifying performance.
Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis), a brilliant, successful but eccentric clothing designer who heads his own fashion house in 1955 London, where his clients include royalty, movie stars, heiresses, grand dames and socialites. Woodcock is gifted but he is also exacting, temperamental and ego-eccentric. Gifted and elegant, Reynolds can be charming or eccentric by turns. Maybe you heard about it from a friend, someone who'd stumbled across a random episode late one night. Maybe you knew someone from the U.K. who'd been crowing for years about this thing they'd caught on TV, something to do with brain-chips and recorded memories and a nightmarish sense of dread. Or maybe someone texted you, or Dm-ed you, or posted something in your social media feed about this show that was tapping into the collective fear that it's all one click away from coming apart at the seams.

When Rachel Weisz took on her latest role in Denial, she knew it would be a moving project — but never imagined just how personal it would become.
In the film, Weisz plays professor Deborah Lipstadt, the woman who won a historic 2000 court case defeating prominent Holocaust denier David Irving.
“I had heard about the trial, but I didn’t know about it in any great detail,” the actress tells People in this week’s issue. “About a month before we began filming, Deborah and I sat in my kitchen for a couple of days and talked. The deniers called it the Holohoax.

Joe Wright's upcoming Peter Pan origin story, "Pan," has been touted as a revised history of the beloved characters first introduced in J.M. Barrie's novel, and that includes a new villain terrorizing Peter's world. Now, Entertainment Weekly has debuted the first images from the film that reveal Hugh Jackman's nefarious character.
Jackman is playing the pirate Blackbeard, who pilots a flying pirate ship and kidnaps orphans during wartime. One of those little tykes is Peter (newcomer Levi Miller).
In the images, we see Blackbeard's namesake -- more of a pointy goatee than the bushy beard we were expecting -- and his intense, feather-coated armor. (He also has a pretty odd-looking hairline, but we're hoping that that's just an awkward styling gaffe, and not a film-long problem with Jackman's wig.) There's also a shot of his ship, as well as a look at the wide-eyed young Peter.

Based on author Richelle Mead’s worldwide bestselling series, Vampire Academy tells the legend of Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) and Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry), two 17-year-old girls who attend a hidden boarding school for Moroi (mortal, peaceful Vampires) and Dhampirs (half-vampire/half-human guardians).
Rose, a rebellious Guardian-in-training and her best friend, Lissa – a royal vampire Princess – have been on the run when they are captured and returned to St.Vladamirs Academy, the very place where they believe their lives may be in most jeopardy. Thrust back into the perils of Moroi Society and high school, Lissa struggles to reclaim her status while Rose trains with her mentor and love-interest, Dimitri (Danila Kozlovsky), to guarantee her place as Lissa’s guardian.
Rose will sacrifice everything to protect Lissa from those who intend to exploit her from within the Academy walls and the Strigoi (immortal, evil vampires) who hunt her kind from outside its sanctuary.

I am a huge fan of Edgar Wright, the English director who helmed Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot Fuzz (2007), and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010). Wright is responsible for some of my favorite comedies, and he is a director whose work I will always support. Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are the first two parts of a thematic trilogy; one not connected by characters or narrative, but instead by shared traits and motifs, and all of them directed by Wright, written by Wright and Simon Pegg, and starring Pegg and Nick Frost. This trilogy is alternately known as either the “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy” or the “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy” – because of the shared elements of gory violence and a running joke about the British ice cream product Cornetto. And at long last, The World’s End, the third film of the Trilogy has finally arrived, and it’s awesome.

Director Edgar Wright confesses, “I remember on Hot Fuzz filming a shoot-out in a pub and saying to [producer] Nira Park, ‘I never want to shoot in a pub again. I’m sick of it.’
“So, all these pub locations we went to for The World’s End? I brought them on myself!”

Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost super trifecta! At long last, we finally get our first trailer for Focus Features’ The World’S End. The film will hit Us theaters on August 23rd.
To coin a phrase – smashing! This is what Vince Vaughn’s and Ben Stiller’s The Watch (2012) should have been, but unfortunately lacked… humor.
The third installment of director Edgar Wright’s trilogy of comedies starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, following the successes “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Hot Fuzz” (2007). In The World’S End, 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach...

Chicago – Though cinema is first and foremost a visual medium, too many modern directors have become prone to using it as a stage for long-winded exposition. No matter how polished the lensing is in a film like David Fincher’s “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” remake, the picture basically amounts to a series of dense dialogue passages interrupted by violence.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Few filmmakers exploit the visual possibilities of cinematic storytelling with more verve and invention than Joe Wright. Though his critics have accused him of favoring style over substance, he has consistently proven adept at allowing his images to speak volumes. Consider his stunning tracking shot along the Dunkirk beach in “Atonement,” which conveys the hell of war with more poetry and immediacy than any monologue. Or the pulse-pounding sequence in “Hanna” that portrays a man’s mounting paranoia as a group of thugs gradually materialize before cornering him in the subway.

Princess Diana: The first official image from Diana has been released (above; photo credit: Laurie Sparham), showcasing an elegantly-dressed Naomi Watts as the late British princess. Formerly titled Caught in Flight, the film covers the last two years of her too-short life. Oliver Hirschbiegel is directing; he previously helmed Downfall, about Adolph Hitler’s final days, so he certainly knows a thing or two about the relative importance of historical accuracy. [Coming Soon] Rumor Patrol: Previously we’d heard from 21 Jump Street star Jonah Hill that he and co-writer Michael Bacall were working on a script for a sequel, and now Channing Tatum, Aka Magic Mike (and the other star of the big-screen version of the TV show), jumped on Twitter to say that he and Hill...

We’ve just been sent the press release and the first official image of Naomi Watts playing Princess Diana which seems to have changed its name from Caught in Flight to now simply ‘Diana‘ which seems to make a lot more sense.
Diana is a compelling portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales during the final two years of her life. It charts how finding true personal happiness allowed her to achieve her defining successes, as she evolved into a major international campaigner and humanitarian.Check out the image below and press release below that. Portrait of a Princess is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel who also directed Downfall and is based on a screenplay by Stephen Jeffreys. Joining Naomi Watts will be fellow Brits Naveen Andrews as Dr Hasnat Khan, Douglas Hodge and Juliet Stevenson.
This fab new photo was taken by Laurie Sparham and the look of Watts is rather uncanny.

Chicago – It’s little surprise that Jessica Chastain has received so much attention during this year’s awards season. Thanks to a series of release date delays, six of her films were released in 2011, each featuring an entirely different role for the strikingly versatile actress. From her slapstick pratfalls in “The Help” to her ethereal grace in “The Tree of Life,” Chastain displayed a remarkable range that has made it impossible for moviegoers to tear their eyes away from her.
In John Madden’s problematic espionage thriller, “The Debt,” Chastain proves to be every bit as mesmerizing, though the film suffers considerably whenever she’s offscreen. Based on Assaf Bernstein’s 2007 Israeli thriller, “Ha-Hov,” the film cuts back and forth in time as it follows three Mossad agents on their mission to capture a Nazi surgeon. Though the central action takes place in 1965, the film repeatedly jumps 31 years in the...

Helen Mirren, The Debt The Help was once again the no. 1 movie at the Us/Canada box office on Tuesday, Sept. 7, grossing $1.34 million according to Box Office Mojo. The Help cast features Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sissy Spacek, Mary Steenburgen, Allison Janney, Cicely Tyson, Chris Lowell, and Mike Vogel. Writer-director Tate Taylor adapted Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel. The Help was down 10% on Wednesday. That was the lowest drop-off rate on a day when every single top-twelve movie was down, most of them losing more than one fifth of their business. John Madden's The Debt — which, despite rumors to the contrary, has nothing to do with the national debt or debt ceiling — collected $749k at no. 2. The espionage thriller stars Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, Avatar's Sam Worthington, The Help and The Tree of Life's Jessica Chastain, two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson,...

HollywoodNews.com: Normally I would not spend a column championing a small $5 million comedy that is on track to gross over $30 million as anything other than a ‘gee, I like when that happens’. And while there are many reasons to praise the $14 million six-day opening of The Debt, the most surprising thing about it is that Focus Features debuted the film wide enough to achieve that kind of opening in the first place.
In a movie-going world where any number of seemingly mainstream pictures die in the art-house, peaking at 500 screens and unable to capitalize on mainstream buzz or word of mouth, kudos to the Weinstein Company and Focus Features for just opening these movies the old fashioned way. They may have sensibilities that differ from the most popular versions of their respective genre. Our Idiot Brother is (allegedly) a bit more painful and quirky than a Judd Apatow film,...

Sam Worthington, The Debt Tate Taylor-Emma Stone-Viola Davis' The Help Box Office: First Consecutive Three-Day Weekend at the Top Since Christopher Nolan's Inception Starring Avatar's Sam Worthington, Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, The Help and The Tree of Life's Jessica Chastain, two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson, Ciarán Hinds, Marton Csokas, and Jesper Christensen, the Focus Features/Miramax espionage thriller The Debt earned a relatively modest $9.67m at 1,826 locations, averaging $5,300 per site according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. For comparison's sake: on its fourth weekend out, The Help averaged $4,998 at 2,843 locations. Remember, all things being equal, the fewer the number of theaters, the higher the per-theater average should be. Despite a good 71% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics, after five days The Debt has collected $11.57m. As per Box Office Mojo, The Debt has also taken in $1.9m in France and Russia,...

Chicago – Re-imagining, almost re-engaging the evil of the Holocaust has been thoroughly examined in film for years. “The Debt” looks at another angle, that of revenge and how much that revenge can wreak havoc on the truth.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
With both Helen Mirren, who plays the character of Rachel in 1997, and Jessica Chastain, who mirrors her in the Rachel of 1965, there is a mood generated that has a haunting and melancholy personality. This is matched with a frantic and thrilling tale of espionage tinged with the karma of revenge. It is a morality play by way of tinker-tailor-soldier-spy.
Rachel (Helen Mirren) was a covert Israeli intelligence agent in the mid-1960s, and her daughter has just written a book about one of her exploits. Her mission then was to find the so-called ‘Butcher of Birkenau,’ a Nazi doctor (Jesper Christensen) who experimented on female Jewish inmates during the Holocaust in World War II.

Chicago – Film adaptations of classic literature are often lose-lose scenarios. The ardent admirers of the source often sour on what is left out, and the average filmgoer might wonder what the fuss is about when experiencing a truncated interpretation. There is obvious passion behind the latest adaptation of “Jane Eyre,” with performances that follow that lead.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Director Cary Fukunaga does a sensational job providing a sense of scope and gravity to the oft-filmed tale (over 20 TV/film adaptations according to IMDb). The screenwriter Moira Buffini found a place in the novel in which to anchor flashback scenes, so Fukunaga can compactly tell two parts at once, capturing the essence of the whole story. Mia Wasikowska portrays the title character, lacking a bit of nuance while embracing an age-appropriate aspect of Jane.
In the beginning of the film, Jane is famously seen lost on the moors, floundering towards nowhere. She...
