Kristen Wiig has spoken out about the backlash to the all-female Ghostbusters.
The actress admitted to being affected by certain reactions to Paul Feig's upcoming reboot.
"The fact there was so much controversy because we were women was surprising to me," Wiig told the Los Angeles Times.
"Some people said some really not nice things about the fact that there were women. It didn't make me mad, it just really bummed me out. We're really honouring these movies."
Wiig's comments follow Feig's last month where he slammed Twitter misogynists to "go f**k yourself".
The actress also responded to the continuous 'women in comedy' question, stating that the fact it gets asked "implies that it's something we need to explain or defend".
"If [people] would watch movies or look at comedy and see how many talented, funny women are out there and have been since the beginning of time, people would stop asking that,...

Season five saw Elena (Nina Dobrev – The Perks of Being a Wallflower, DeGrassi: The Next Generation) headed to Whitmore College with Caroline, not knowing Bonnie sacrificed her life for Jeremy’s. Meanwhile, Stefan and Caroline’s friendship deepened as they stood up to the Travelers, a nomadic witch tribe driven to strip Mystic Falls of magic and cast out its supernatural residents. In the shocking season finale, Damon, fearing he would lose his loved ones on the crumbling Other Side, made a huge sacrifice to bring them all back — with catastrophic and heartbreaking results.
In season six we follow the characters’ journey back to each other as they explore the duality of good versus evil inside themselves. Matt Davis reprises his role as Alaric Saltzman,...

Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party has a new series full of cute creatures to delight viewers. To celebrate Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, the digital network teamed with the Aspca animal shelters to launch the pet-centric series Heavy Petting on October 14, 2015.
As the potentially risqué name suggests, Heavy Petting fittingly combines the idea of adopting or fostering a pet with finding the next love of your life. Each episode will take the form of a Tinder-style dating profile of one cat or dog from an Aspca shelter around the U.S. For added comedic effect, well-known Hollywood names will lend their voices to the animals. The first episode features comedian John Mulaney as the voice of Bart the mixed breed puppy. Future pets will be voiced by acting talent like Ike Barinholtz, Aziz Ansari, Paul Scheer, Nick Offerman, and Aubrey Plaza (who’s no stranger to giving...

What do you get when you combine makeup tutorials with stories of ghosts? Thanks to Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party digital network, we now have the answer. The female-centric network launched the new web series The Other Side with Annamarie Tendler on September 29, 2015.
The Other Side is hosted by Annamarie Tendler, a professional makeup artist and author of the book The Daily Face: 25 Makeup Looks for Day, Night, and Everything in Between. In each episode, Tendler welcomes a guest onto her show and demonstrates a makeup routine on one-half of her guest’s face. Tendler’s guest then finishes the look on the other side of her face while discussing supernatural happenings and sometimes even Leonardo DiCaprio (Tendler’s favorite actor).
In the debut episode of The Other Side, Tendler and comedienne Nicole Byer (of Girl Code fame) show viewers how to do the perfect red lip look.

With Gamescom in Europe and E3 in North American now over, it’s now Japan’s turn to put on a good show. It has been easy to rip into the Madden NFL franchise over the past decade or so. Ever since the exclusive deal with the National Football League was made back in 2004, the franchise has been mercilessly called out for stagnant gameplay and little year to year improvement. Some of this criticism has been warranted, of course, however, it can sometimes feel like people are bashing on it because it is popular franchise that doesn’t need to change due to its massive sales. That hasn’t stopped EA Tiburon from constantly tweaking the formula, though, with this year’s Madden NFL 16 representing another year forward for the series.
Before you even get the chance to hop into training camp or online play, Madden throws you into a semi-scripted SuperBowl 50 match-up between pre-season contenders, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. Playing like a more advanced version of last year’s Panthers/Seahawks showdown,...

The original plans for Sting at SummerSlam was for him to team with Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose against the reunited Wyatt Family trio of Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan. That’s not going to happen now because Rowan’s out of action for several months due to a torn biceps.
According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the six man tag is likely going to happen with somebody replacing Rowan.
There’s a lot of speculation about who the partner of the Wyatt Family will be with the obvious name being Bo Dallas just because he’s the real life brother of Bray. The problem with that is that WWE may not want to change Dallas because he’s got his own gimmick already. The other side of it is that his comedy heel gimmick isn’t really going to get him that far, so a change could be good for him.

Prince George has already gotten an early birthday gift! Prince William and Kate Middleton's son, who turns two years old next week on July 22, has been honored with a special limited edition commemorative coin produced by England's Royal Mint. The sterling silver £5 coin features an image of Christian martyr Saint George battling the mythical dragon and was reimagined by artist Christopher Le Brun. The other side features the current portrait of George's great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II done by Jody Clark. "The choice of the St. George design to honor Prince George's birthday is an apt one—the name George has long had links with the British monarchy and its coinage, there...

Two up-and-coming Native talents, Razelle Benally (Navajo/Oglala Lakota) and Randi LeClair (Pawnee) have been selected for the Sundance Institute Native Filmmakers Lab, where the two writers will receive grants for production and targeted support during a residential Lab to prepare for production of their short films.
The Lab takes place in Santa Fe, New Mexico July 10-14. The Lab is a highlight of the Institute’s year-round work with Native American and Indigenous filmmakers and is one of the 24 residential labs the Institute hosts each year to discover and foster the talent of emerging independent artists in film, theater, new media and more recently episodic content.
The Native Filmmakers Lab builds on the Institute’s former NativeLab to include grants to support production of the Fellows’ short films – a first for the Institute’s renowned independent artist Labs. The writers and directors serving as Creative Advisors for this year’s Lab include: Janicza Bravo ("Gregory Go Boom" and "Pauline Alone"), Beck Cole ( "Plains Empty" and "Here I Am" ), Sydney Freeland ("Drunktown's Finest" and "HoverBoard" ), Aurora Guerrero ( "Pura Lengua" and "Mosquita y Mari" ) and Lucas Leyva ( "#PostModem" and "Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke" ).
N. Bird Runningwater (Cheyenne/Mescalero Apache), director of the Sundance Institute Native American and Indigenous Program, said, “Our Native Filmmakers Lab responds to the unique need within our community to support Native American artists with grants and mentorship focusing on the crucial phase of producing their films. I am excited to embark on this creative journey with these two bright female directors as they begin the tactical phase of creating their films.”
The Native Filmmakers Lab will be followed by the inaugural Native Writers Workshop, jointly hosted by Sundance Institute and the Institute of American Indian Arts (Iaia). The Workshop will support six emerging Native storytellers who seek to share their voices in film and television: Gabe Abeyta (Taos Pueblo and Navajo from Santa Fe, Nm), Katie Avery (Iñupiaq from Los Angeles, CA), Kelly D'Angelo (Haudenosaunee from Los Angeles, CA), Felicia Nez (Navajo from Albuquerque, Nm), Blue Tarpalechee (Muscogee from Santa Fe, Nm) and Kaherawaks Thompson (St. Regis Mohawks of Akwesasne from Memphis, Tn).
They will be mentored by: Beck Cole (Writer, "Here I Am" and "Black Comedy" ), Jason Gavin (Writer, "Greek, "Friday Night Lights"), Derek Santos Olson (Writer, "Friday Night Lights" ), Sierra Ornelas (Writer, "Selfie" and "Happy Endings" ), Alex Rivera (Writer/Director, "Sleep Dealer" ) and Joan Tewkesbury (Writer, "Nashville" and "Thieves Like Us" ).
True to founder Robert Redford’s original vision, the Institute maintains a strong commitment to supporting Native and Indigenous filmmakers. The Native program has built and sustained a unique support cycle for Indigenous artists through grants, labs, mentorships, a fellowship program at the Sundance Film Festival, and screenings for Native communities to inspire new generations of storytellers. Currently operating programs in the United States, Canada, and formerly New Zealand and Australia, the Institute has established a rich legacy of work by supporting more than 300 Native and Indigenous filmmakers, including Taika Waititi, Chris Eyre, Sterlin Harjo, Billy Luther, Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, Aurora Guerrero, Sydney Freeland and Yolanda Cruz.
There are the two artists/projects selected for the 2015 Native Filmmakers Lab:
"I Am Thy Weapon"
Razelle Benally (Navajo/Oglala Lakota)
A young artistic Navajo woman relives memories of her deceased sister, that in turn help her heal and battle against the modern-day adversities of reservation life.
Razelle Benally is of Oglala Lakota and Navajo blood. Benally’s firsthand experience while filming and traveling with renowned skateboard company Apache Skateboards has helped her hone a self-developed style of editing and directing. She most notably gained acclaim for her short documentary "The Humble," and six-minute experimental piece "Love is a Losing Game." Benally is one of five young women featured in the 2011 documentary, "Apache Chronicle."
She has shown in galleries in Long Beach, CA and in Phoenix, Az. Her films have been shown nationally and internationally at select screenings in Portland, Winnipeg Manitoba Canada, and Sweden. She earned a third place award in the 2007 Aihec Film Festival, and is the 2010 Santa Fe Indian Market jury-awarded winner for Best Documentary in Swaia’s Classification X. Benally is an alumna of the 2012 Sundance Institute Native Filmmakers Lab.
"The Other Side of the Bridge"
Randi LeClair (Pawnee)
After two high school football stars are found dead, decade’s long racial tensions sizzle in a small-town diner.
Randi LeClair is an enrolled member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma. She graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BA in English (Creative Writing) and is currently a graduate student in the University of Oklahoma’s Master of Professional Writing program. Recently, Randi and her husband, Todd, signed an option agreement for the screen adaptation of Todd’s book, "60 Feet Six Inches and Other Distances from Home: The (Baseball) Life of Mose YellowHorse," which follows the story of Pittsburg Pirates pitcher Mose YellowHorse, the first full-blood American Indian in the major leagues.
In addition to screenwriting, Randi also engages her love of literary fiction and is currently working on a collection of short stories. As well, she also serves as co-editor for "Out of the Stars: An Anthology of Pawnee Writing, Stories, and Art." Her dream is to help bring Native Cinema to the mainstream. She is an alumna of the 2010 Sundance Institute Native Filmmakers Lab.

Ah, the joys of location shooting. You get all the wonder of discovering a place that lends character, texture and intrigue to your project without having to have someone create it in a sound stage or a computer. There are a great number of reasons to shoot on location. Most of all, you generally get a lot more bang for your buck if you pick the right place. Read More: How This First-Time Director Shot a Feature Film in New York City 1. Consider all necessities and have a backup plan in place for anything that involves a third party. As we conclude our conversation, James Hawkinson correctly notes that HitFix doesn't do many interviews with cinematographers. While my departing colleague Kris Tapley actually has done a spectacular job interviewing big screen DPs for the site, Hawkinson is almost certainly the first TV cinematographer I've spoken with. If you're going to talk to one TV cinematographer, though, it's hard to think of a better candidate than Hawkinson, who has shot NBC's "Hannibal" since its pilot. No matter what Emmy voters may think, "Hannibal" is currently in its third season as one of the most breathtaking visual spectacles on TV. It's a world of richly saturated colors, subtle gradations of darkness, teasing tricks of focus and the ability to get equal beauty out of a flayed body, a tower of corpses or a dinner composed of succulent preparations of "human" flesh. There's really nothing close on TV, like a little weekly...

Many will view this as just desserts for a company which has reigned as the king of the American indie scene for many years now, unwittingly providing the WWE with some of their most popular workers of the modern era, yet always managing to bring new stars through as the old ones leave for the big leagues.
The other side of this story is that the network looks increasingly likely to cut Tna from its schedule, something which may at first seem like a “one step forward, one step back” decision. What’s the point of trading one wrestling promotion for another? What sort of impact can this realistically have upon the landscape of the business?

If you have any inclination to see this, just rewatch the original. You will lose nothing, and you’ll have a far better time. I’m “biast” (pro): love Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt
I’m “biast” (con): big fan of the 1982 original
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I don’t understand why this movie exists. There’s no reason for it. I mean, I get the business reason why someone decided it was a good idea to cash in on a nearly 35-year-old movie that many critics (including me) and fans consider one of the greatest horror movies ever made. But no one on the supposed creative side of this “new” Poltergeist could be bothered to even pretend to have something to add, something fresh to say that wasn’t said back in 1982 about the trials of a suburban American family whose house is menaced by nasty spirits.

British director Gil Kenan proved his atmospheric take on the horror and fantasy genres with his movies Monster House and City of Ember. Now, with legendary filmmaker and producer Sam Raimi (Spiderman, Evil Dead, The Grudge), Kenan directs the remake of the classic 1982 horror movie Poltergeist.
For the soundtrack, available May 19 via Sony Classical, Kenan chose German film score composer Marc Streitenfeld, known for his collaborations with director Ridley Scott.
Poltergeist contemporizes the scary tale about a family – starring Sam Rockwell (Moon, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Cinderella Man, Rachel Getting Married) – whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces.
When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter (Kennedi Clements) captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.

The 68th Cannes Film Festival is now little under a month away, and Variety has the skinny on the event’s impressive line-up, which includes Carol and French comedy-drama La Tete Haute – itself set to open the festival on May 13 – not to mention the likes of Pixar’s emotional animation Inside Out and Mad Max: Fury Road screening out of competition.
For a full rundown of those candidates in question, you can consult the list down below. Due to take place from May 13 to May 25, it’s expected that more films will be added to the cinematic selection in the coming days, but already the billing is chock full of eye-catching releases. Interestingly, the aforementioned La Tete Haute will be the first festival opener since 1987 to be directed by a female filmmaker, in this case, Emmanuelle Bercot.

The 2015 Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced this morning and it's quite impressive as it includes several titles I'd be rushing to line up for, which makes my not going for the second year in a row all the more frustrating. Titles I'd be most excited to see including the new Jacques Audiard movie Dheepan, the new film from Yorgos Lanthimos The Lobster and Denis Villeneuve's Sicario. Matteo Garrone's The Tale of Tales is obviously an exciting title as are Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, Carol from Todd Haynes and Youth from Paolo Sorrentino. Gus Van Sant will arrive on the Croisette with The Sea of Trees starring Matthew McConaughey, Pixar will arrive with Inside Out, Woody Allen's Irrational Man will screen and we already knew Mad Max: Fury Road would screen. I won't lie, seeing the lineup had me considering looking at the bank...

The best Oscar speech vs. worst Oscar speech debate has the potential to bring up some of the most contentious differences of opinion in all of film commentary. Where one observer derides a mawkish spectacle of lurid enthusiasm, another witness applauds an inspiring display of passionate commitment. There's no bringing these conflicting points of view into alignment. One side argues that a particular Oscar winner's acceptance speech is so awful it's great. The other side insists that the same Oscar winner's speech is so great it's awful. Read More Oscars: The Desperate Last Measures in the Final Days of Campaigning

Chicago – As race issues continue in the news, in the wake of Ferguson and “I Can’t Breathe,” the movies exhibit an extraordinary piece of timing with the new film “Black or White.” Oscar winners Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer participate in a story of family and healing.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The issue in the film involves “Black or White,” but mostly in the context of what the opposing families want for a biracial girl suddenly being raised by her white grandfather (Costner). Written and directed by Mike Binder (“The Upside of Anger”), the film explores themes of socioeconomic separation as much as opposing racial views, and mostly it shows that both sides care ultimately for the little girl. Kevin Costner also steps outside his usual character mode, playing the grandfather as a mourning and boozy figure of tragedy, and a morally vague arbiter of the racial issues that have been thrust upon him.

Chicago – Kevin Costner has come to represent a particular brand of Americana, for his roles in films like “Field of Dreams,” “Dances with Wolves” “JFK” and recently as Pa Kent in “Man of Steel.” His latest film is “Black or White.”
“Black or White” is written and directed by Mike Binder, who Costner has previously collaborated with in “The Upside of Anger.” It focuses on Eliot Anderson (Costner), who loses his wife in a car accident as the film begins. He is left to raise their granddaughter Eloise (Jillian Estell), after he and his wife had adopted her when their daughter died in childbirth. Eliot’s daughter had hid the pregnancy, and the father was an African American man. The other side of Eloise’s family, led by matriarch Rowena (Octavia Spencer), challenges Eliot for custody of Eloise, and retains Rowena’s high powered lawyer brother Jeremiah (Anthony Mackie) to process the trial.

It was the hammer-headed Xenomorph from Ridley Scott's 1979 "Alien," with its macabre, womblike set design, that won famed surrealist H.R. Giger his Oscar in 1980 for Best Achievement in Special Effects. Now, Icarus Films and KimStim have announced the joint acquisition of North American distribution rights -- including theatrical, home video and TV -- to "Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World," directed by Belinda Sallin. 2015 release date forthcoming. Giger, who died in 2014, designed out-of-this-world sets and scenes for "Poltergeist 2," "The Other Side," "Alien 3," "Species" and "Prometheus," to name a few, along with mind-bending cover art for Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Debbie Harry and Danzig. Giger was recently featured in the terrific documentary "Jodorowsky's Dune," chronicling the thwarted attempt by Alejandro Jodorowsky, who approached Giger to contribute VFX designs, to mount the Frank Herbert...

I guess it’s just an occupational hazard with the lawyering game; assuming your clients are lying to you. Lord knows, I was guilty of it enough times. Of course, it’s easy to do that, when your initial conversations go something like this.
“I didn’t burgle that house, Mr. Ingersoll.”
“The police found your fingerprints in the house.”
“The police planted my fingerprints there.”
“The police found you in the house.”
“The police planted me there.”
Okay, that was a slight exaggeration. My clients don’t actually know the difference between burgle and rob. But you get the idea.
So, as I said, it’s an occupational hazard. And it affects all of us. Even Jennifer (She-Hulk) Walters. Even when her client is Captain America.
So, if you guessed today’s column is about Part 3 of “The Good Old Days,” from She-Hulk v.3 #10, you’re right. Now as...

Jack O’Connell displays remarkable stamina as star of Angelina Jolie‘s “Unbroken,” but one thing he can’t seem to commit to these days? Partying.
Modeling slick suits in the January issue of GQ, O’Connell reveals his childhood nickname was “Jack the lad,” with an impish reputation to match.
But now, with his full slate of films and award-season campaigning, he’s more content in his garden.
“I’m not trying to have the most fun I’ve ever had ever, anymore, you know? That used to be the mentality every time I left the house,” he said.

2.6 Wheel Inside The Wheel

Not only do we have Esther, Mikael, Kol and Finn resurrected, but now there's Klaus' werewolf father and Esther's evil sister to deal with – Julie Plec really didn't want to waste the opportunity of The Other Side closing, did she?
As a result of this character dump, Wheel Inside The Wheel was a bit of a filler episode in a show that doesn't do well with filler. The people on The Originals don't function like normal characters, only talking in grand speeches and interacting with veiled ulterior motives, and so when we...

Honda's massive music-based online video initiative may be struggling, but its newest YouTube campaign is very exciting. The automaker teamed up with ad agency Wieden + Kennedy (W + K) for "The Other Side", an interactive video that cleverly examines the differences between two related cars. The stars of "The Other Side" are the Honda Civic and the Civic Type R. The former is compact car suited for the suburbs, while the latter is a high-performance vehicle with a sleeker look. In order to highlight the strengths of each vehicle, W + K created two videos: In one, a dad picks up his daughter from school; in the other, he assists a pair of thieves as they execute a heist. The clever part of the two videos is the way they are spliced together. On a specially designed YouTube page, the videos play on top of each other, and viewers can switch between...

It always upsets me when people say Orson Welles made Citizen Kane and then did not make anything worthwhile after that. Every project after Kane with Welles behind the camera are worth watching. Some are masterpieces, a word I hate using but will to drive home this point, like F for Fake or the difficult to find The Chimes at Midnight. Then there are the films that could have reached those heights without pesky studio executives interfering with a creative mind's vision, like The Magnificent Ambersons. Even if the film ends up not being an A++, best movie ever type thing, there is always a reason to watch a Welles movie. His last film, The Other Side of the World, went unfinished. Welles shot it over the course of seven years on and off, from 1969 to 1976. In the latter days of his career, when he was off in Europe personally funding his movies,...

Gotham is easily one of the fall's best new shows, but it's far from perfect. The sets and costumes? Gorgeous. The acting? Frequently quite good for a comic-book drama (granted, that's not a high bar). The action? Surprisingly engaging even without the Bat. And yet, when constructing this big of a bold comic-book universe in primetime, there's always going to be some elements that could be better. Here are my suggestions: — Dial back the overacting: This is the most shout-y show since The Goldbergs. Why is everybody freaking out so often? It's like the Gcpd's coffee pot is spiked with Bane's 'roid rage venom.

A championship in professional wrestling is an important person of hardware because it represents the best in the business. While wrestling is a scripted form of entertainment, the titles that performer’s win are supposed to have meaning. Titles in wrestling go back to the early days of the sport. When fans see somebody holding a World Title, they consider that person the best or at least one of the best. At least, that’s the idea.
We just saw WWE’s Night of Champions PPV last month and it was promoted as a show where every title was on the line. That’s supposed to draw people into the show. It doesn’t always work, but the point is that those titles do mean something. Another thing going on in WWE right now is the WWE Champion Brock Lesnar is absent from programming because of his part time contract.

The Vampire Diaries' sixth season feels like the show of old. Here's Caroline's review of Welcome To Paradise...
This review contains spoilers.
6.3 Welcome To Paradise
The perpetual Stefan/Elena/Damon love triangle has plagued Vampire Diaries for years. It hasn’t been fresh since around the season three mark, before Elena became a vampire and the writers introduced the hilariously misjudged sire bond plotline. Worse than that, it actually felt like the need to keep the triangle revolving was preventing character growth for the three involved parties during seasons four and five.
Splitting them up, then, has been the best and most refreshing part of season six so far. Damon might still be half-pining after Elena, but regardless, the three of them have finally become characters in their own right again. They have wants and needs that don’t directly relate back to each other, and even some new...
