Good movies tend to have solid taglines. Bad movies almost always have questionable taglines. Coincidence?
Taglines may not be the most important component of a film’s advertising, but having a good one can be beneficial. A good tagline should be something that is memorable, catchy, informative of the films’ plot or tone, and unique. Consider the tagline from Alien, “In space no one will hear you scream,” or Jurassic Park, “An adventure 65 million years in the making.” At other times, movie taglines have been famous quotes from the film. Examples are “One ring to rule them all,” from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, or “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy,” from The Shining. Simply put, having a solid movie tagline is worth the effort.
This is a look at a few films where the effort was clearly lacking or misplaced. Sometimes they are trying too hard.

Much has been made about the dearth of strong female roles in contemporary cinema, and the problematic depictions of women in many recent movies, but the past two decades have provided plenty of counterexamples. While the onus is on writers and directors to craft strong female characters, the actresses themselves bring these figures to life, and they’re often the main reason we keep being drawn back to these works.
In no particular order, our favorite — and we’d like to think the best — female performances of the 21st century.
Isabelle Huppert, “Elle”
Paul Verhoeven’s “Elle” begins with a laugh that catches in your throat: A wide-eyed cat looks off-screen to the screams of a man and woman in apparent orgiastic bliss. Then comes the cutaway, which reveals a far more nefarious incident: Middle-aged Michéle (Isabelle Huppert), in the process of getting raped by a masked assailant on the floor of her home.

If you want to know how strong the goodwill that Wes Anderson carries around is, all you have to do is look at the absolutely great and kinda bonkers cast for his new movie, “Isle Of Dogs.” In no particular order, F. Murray Abraham, Bob Balaban, Bryan Cranston, Greta Gerwig, Jeff Goldblum, Akira Ito, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, Bill Murray, Kunichi Nomura, Edward Norton, Yoko Ono, Koyu Rankin, Liev Schreiber, Tilda Swinton, Akira Takayama and Frank Wood, all lend their voices to what is hopefully another winning picture from the filmmaker.

An alleged call sheet for Avengers 4 has been uncovered today, which claims to have identified which heroes fought in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Infinity War and lived to tell the tale.
First thing’s first: we should stress that this document has been doing the rounds over on Reddit (via ComicBook.com), which is a red flag in and of itself. Second, the actual image itself contains a couple of notable mistakes – for instance, Guardians of the Galaxy actress Karen Gillan is listed twice.
Notable by their absence? Evangeline Lilly (Ant-Man and the Wasp) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming), though it’s important to remember that the latter was actually missing from the Avengers: Infinity War call sheet, despite the fact that his Spider-Man holds an active role in the Russo Brothers’ 2018 epic. Ticket information can be found Here
Although St. Louis game designers the Coster brothers — Adam, Sam, and Seth — have a reputation for developing projects quickly, they have spent the last two years working on only one game. Sam’s dream game, “Crashlands” has helped him battle cancer as he struggles with Stage 4B lymphoma.
Alessio Summerfield, co-director of Dev Diary, took the time to answer questions about his film for We Are Movie Geeks in advance of it’s screening at the St. Louis Filmmaker’s Showcase.
Interview conducted by Tom Stockman
Tom Stockman: What was your filmmaking experience prior to Dev Diary? Is this your first feature-length documentary?
Alessio Summerfield: Prior to Dev Diary James Reichmuth and I came from two different backgrounds.

The cast for Survivor: Game Changers is a bit confusing. While the collection of returning players should make for an entertaining season, since second-time castaways always play the game harder than their first go-around, the subtitle of Game Changers is a misnomer. While there are a few standouts and some rather remarkable contestants from Survivor history, very few of them have "changed" the game. There are even a handful (like Tai, Caleb and Brad Culpepper) who have no business being in an All-Stars-esque season.
There are several players who fall somewhere between the huge threat level of contestants like two-time winner Sandra and bizarre non-entities like Debbie. These players are the really dangerous ones. In no particular order, here are five of the most promising, and for their fellow castaways most threatening, returning players in Survivor: Game Changers.

In what is shaping up to be a busy, busy day for Netflix – the online streamer just renewed hit sci-fi drama The Oa for a second season, with a downright strange teaser trailer to boot – we now have our first look at Bill Nye Saves the World in motion.
Introducing the Science Guy to Netflix subscribers, the announcement trailer confirms the show’s release date (April 21st) along with the range of timely topics that Nye and Co. plan to thrust under the spotlight. In no particular order, they include global warming, alternative medicine, technology, sex, and GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). It’s unclear at the moment, but we assume each of the show’s 13 episodes will be dedicated to one topic in particular, allowing Bill Nye and his special guests/correspondents to debunk popular myths and anti-scientific claims all from the comfort of Netflix HQ.

Filmmakers often plan ahead, and many of the movies which come out each year are designed to be part of a multi-film series. However, it doesn’t always work out that way. Sometimes, the first sequel bombs and the third movie never gets made. Here are 6 short movie franchises that remained unfinished.
There have been many successful franchises over the years. Franchises are a very hot thing right now. However, for every Star Wars, Dark Knight or Captain America franchise, there is a failed film series. Often these intended series will start off with an excellent movie but the second film will derail any plans for a third movie or beyond.
In no particular order, here are six franchises that never got past a second film.
Conan: Arnold Schwarzenegger starred as Robert E. Howard’s Cimmerian warrior Conan in 1982’s Conan the Barbarian, which was a box office hit.

From dramas to musicals, 2016 was a year of great filmmaking. Movies that provoked our thoughts, hopes, and dreams. Here are my Top 10 Best Movies of 2016:
Runners-Up (in no particular order):
.American Honey.
.The Witch.
.The Lobster.
.Silence.
.The Handmaiden.
.Elle.
.Toni Erdmann.
.Zootopia.
.Kubo and the Two Strings.
.O.J.: Made in America.
.Love & Friendship.
.Captain America: Civil War.
The Worst (In no particular order):
"Gods of Egypt" -- If I don.t see Gerard Butler in a toga again, I.ll be fine (I can't believe I just said that :tongue)! This dead, lifeless take on Egyptian mythology is forgettable and laughable!
"The Huntstman: Winter.s War" -- It wasted the talents (Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt pretty much overacted), and Chris Hemsworth, brooding and boring! This "Frozen" wannabe suffers from bad, really bad script!
"Independence Day: Resurgence" -- So bad, even Will Smith said no!

The world of television has always been a great barometer for what is going on in the fashion world, as well as creating hot trends on its own. Some of the most amazing-looking characters on the small screen follow many of the biggest runway trends, while others have women racing to their nearest store or hairdresser to nab their styles (the Rachel from Friends, anyone?)
From retro to modern, television fashion can cause a serious case of closet envy for viewers. In no particular order, here are some of the most fashionable television characters of 2016.

Given that Halloween is fast-approaching, I thought I’d put together a number of listicles couting down some of my favourite films to watch this horrorday season. First up are my picks for the ten best 80s horror films on Neflix.
Netflix has a great list of spooky titles available on the service including the likes of TV shows such as Stranger Things and Black Mirror: Season 3 (reviewed here), and new movies like Spellbinder, The Intruders and Felony; all of which join the likes of Carrie, Paranormal Activity and The Ring. It’s safe to say that when it comes to choosing a movie this Halloween, Netflix has you covered!
So, on to my list. In no particular order:
10) Humanoids from the Deep
n this creepy chiller, mutant fish monsters bring mayhem to a sleepy seaside community as they kidnap and mate with the town’s nubile teenage girls.

“30 Rock” gave us many gifts over its seven seasons, and its fictional TV series were some of the best. After all, “30 Rock” was Tina Fey’s spoof of what it was like to work on a sketch variety program like “Saturday Night Live,” which also has given us the gift of many faux shows. It’s just so meta, it’s surprising we don’t already have world peace.

Movie Trailers are the best. And when done right, they can be as satisfying as watching the film itself. Here are my favorites of 2015. There was a lot to sift through but at the end of the day, if it showed up in this list, then it was something that I could instantly recall. In no particular order... Mad Max: Fury Road When the first trailer dropped for 'Mm:fr', I was so incredibly happy I didn't know what to do with myself other than watch the trailer on repeat for three days straight. It was a long eight months until we got our next sneak peek at what is arguably the best film of the year. What I like the most out of the second trailer is the incorporation of Junkie Xl's blistering score. Suicide Squad I wasn't super hyped on this film when it was announced that David Ayer...

"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" proved in its premiere episode that Stephen Colbert is still "Stephen Colbert." He's just more than that now too. The nice thing about shoehorning Colbert into David Letterman's old gig is there's an inherent excitement about how the "Colbert Report" alum interacts with celebrities. That made the stodgiest parts of his premiere (amiable chats with George Clooney and Jeb Bush) a breeze, and it allowed Colbert to spend the rest of the hour trying out bizarre bits. At one point he was stuffing Oreos into his mouth in response to Donald Trump soundbite blitz. At another he obeyed a haunted amulet's requests for product placement. Weird, yes, but the episode ultimately felt like a traditional Letterman experience supercharged with "Colbert Report" zeal. We picked out five provocative quotes and jokes that best illustrate the direction the show wants to take. In no particular order: 1. "With this show,...

Key & Peele has proven time and again to be one of the funniest sketch shows on television, and obviously much of the show's success rests on its charismatic stars. But Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele don't often get enough credit for acting the hell out of their scenes with style and pathos, giving their insane characters and emotional straight men more conviction and heft than their counterparts on narrative television. On the cusp of K&P's fifth-season premiere on Wednesday, Vulture caught up with the show's head writers, Jay Martel and Ian Roberts, who discussed their ten favorite performances from each actor over the past year. In no particular order ...1. Key in “Manly Tears” Jay Martel: This might be my single favorite thing. Partly because I was there on the day they were shooting it, and I got to see how many ways Keegan figured out how to stop...

While most of the attention was focused on the admittedly "awkward" (and frustratingly unresolved) competition between Kaitlyn Bristowe and Britt Nilsson on Monday's season 11 premiere of The Bachelorette, let's not forget that there were 25 handsome men at the mansion, too.
As usual, some guys pulled out the stops, including a cupcake-mobile (more on that in a minute), a "car pool" and hand-drawing; others floundered in introducing themselves to both Bachelorette hopefuls – we're looking at you, canned-statement-peddling "healer" Tony and sloppy, feel-copping Ryan M. (assuming the "M" stands for McDrunkedy-Drunk).
But this isn't a talent competition, it's a journey to love.

Britt Nilsson charmed her way into the hearts of the Bachelor Nation – and nearly the Bachelor himself, Chris Soules, on season 19 of The Bachelor. Now Britt hopes to begin her own journey to love as the next Bachelorette.
I am still not quite sure if this is all a dream. There's a part of me that is still waiting to wake up to my life back to normal … waiting tables, sitting in traffic, talking with my girlfriends about life and love. There's another, more analytical part of me that is processing the fact that my life has definitely changed forever.

So, it's now been a couple of weeks since The Incident took place on Grey's Anatomy, and now that the dust has settled we're looking back on the other small-screen deaths that have left us similarly destroyed.
Below, we've listed 17 of the TV demises we're still not over. In no particular order. They all made us sad. We're not crying, it's just raining. On our faces.
Warning: Just in case this doesn't go without saying, spoilers galore lie ahead. Some of these shows are finished, some are still on, but all of the episodes referenced aired in 2014 or earlier.
1. Joyce Summers (Buffy)
Spoiler: Joss Whedon is going to show up a few times on this list. The man has a self-confessed cruel streak when it comes to offing beloved characters, but the death of Buffy Summers' mother is in a different league even by Whedon standards.
Five seasons in, we...

After last week's screwy episode, all bets are off on how Wednesday's (May 6) episode of "American Idol" will handle its performances and its elimination. In theory, we've got three performances coming up from each contestant tonight, but will we get three performances from the Top 3 following a mid-show elimination? If that's the case, does that mean that one contestant will have gotten the visit home, but will still be booted without singing thrice? Or will we have 12 performances and four Hometown Visit clip packages, even though one singer was effectively a Dead Idol Walking on that visit, having already been eliminated by the voting, even if they didn't know it? I have no clue. Click through and follow along as I inevitably become increasingly frustrated and eventually angry... 7:59 p.m. In case you didn't hear, "Idol" is going two nights next week for the finale. Somebody will be eliminated...

In everyday life, volatility is not necessarily the kind of quality that you look for in a person. Think Joe Pesci in Casino or Goodfellas—not the most amiable of characters.
But if you insert that quality into the less-threatening confines of a WWE audience, then the results are often spectacular.
And it’s a trend that we’re seeing more and more of in modern times. Gone are the traditional days of booing the bad guy and cheering the good guy—there’s now so much more to being a pro wrestling fan.
With the purported death of kayfabe, crowds are now smart. The internet is littered with news on backstage politics and contractual gossip, and such rumblings often manage to reshape and influence an audience’s opinion.
The result is that the good guy is not always viewed as such by those in attendance, and this...

Sky Atlantic
Sky Atlantic’s first real attempt at its very own cult show is now two episodes old, and the mystery, intrigue, suspicion and subterfuge is already as prominent to proceedings as the frozen paradise the show is set in. Fortitude is a town of very few people, and even fewer answers.
After the gruesome murder of Professor Stoddard in episode one, the finger of blame is being waved around so much that it’s conceivable that anybody could have been the killer. Meanwhile, the town seems to a hotbed (or rather a coldbed) of adultery as almost every resident shacks up with someone else’s wife and husband in an attempt to “stay warm”.
Thrust into the middle of all this is Dci Morton, an American from London sent to conduct his own investigation into the murder and, seemingly, the town itself. Keeping up?

Was there a "Please Include Heartwarming Dad Stuff" memo that companies got before the Super Bowl? Because there were definitely a lot of tear-jerking commercials that were all about being a father. Besides all the dad emotions, we also got adorable puppies, Liam Neeson threatening someone (again), and the return of Walter White (Bryan Cranston). So while most of the ads were entertaining at the very least, there were some that shined brighter than the others. (Note: we decided not to include any TV spots or trailers in this list, because, well, we're in charge here and also Jurassic World was the only trailer worth talking about and we already did geek out over it.) Once upon a time, Neill Blomkamp — the creative mind behind District 9, Elysium and the upcoming Chappie — was attached to direct the long-gestating Halo movie, and is now in contention to oversee the pilot episode of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming TV series. But the filmmaker also has a vested interest in another venerable sci-fi franchise and has even drafted up his own vision of what that end product could look like if he had the opportunity to one day direct.
And that IP is none other than Alien, 20th Century Fox’s legendary haunted-house-in-space that spawned an entire universe of sequels and middling spinoffs. Posting the rather striking images through his Instagram account, Blomkamp confirmed that he was at one point working on a concept for a new chapter in the series — in an unofficial capacity, we assume — but not anymore.

There were some outstanding films released in 2014, and many of them lived up to or surpassed expectations. But there were also a handful of movies that had an incredible amount of hype around them that failed to leave a lasting impression. In no particular order, here are my five biggest movie disappointments of the last year.
Veronica Mars
I never watched Veronica Mars when it was originally on the air, but I caught up with the series on DVD and loved it (yes, even the third season). After creator Rob Thomas' Kickstarter campaign became a huge success, I was excited to see the character's adventures continue. But the final product simply didn't have the same spark that the TV series had. The always-charming Kristen Bell can still embody the role of Veronica, and it seems like everyone involved with the project had good intentions, but the end result just...

Another year in Hollywood is rapidly coming to a close, which means it’s time to once again look back at a busy year to determine what the boldest moves in the entertainment industry were.
From a studio wasting millions of dollars on a movie no one will ever see to a network completely dismantling a daytime television staple, there was no shortage of surprises on the big and small screen, as well as in music and media.

Can all reincarnations of Fox shows with Gordon Ramsay be revamped to include kids? That’s what I’m wondering … We’re 2 weeks into the second season of MasterChef: Junior Edition and I’m already clamoring for kid-testants to be mandatory on all future Gordon Ramsay shows. Here are my reasons why (In no particular order) 1) Gordon Ramsay is nicer. On his other shows, Gordon Ramsay is a screaming Scotsman. He seems to relish when the contestants on Hell’s Kitchen mess up so he can morph into the Tryant of Taste. If he treats his actual employees like that, does it … Continue reading →

Half the fun of attending Comic Con - either the New York or San Diego iteration - is the cosplayers. Whether elaborately, cleverly or just plain ol' hilariously costumed, cosplayers are the beating heart and soul of comic conventions. And this attendee has taken the art to new levels, as this picture (circulated on social media earlier today - New York Comic Con wrapped up Sunday) shows. This man took it upon himself to dress as characters from multiple Johnny Depp films, a postmodern experiment in actor worship that we can describe as pretty cool. In no particular order, this...

Starting today, audiences can experience the most immersive “neat marketing thingie” Hollywood has to offer. As a tie-in to Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar, Paramount and IMAX are shuttling an interactive exhibit to four cities across the country. At whichever population center is closest to you — La, NYC, Houston or, strangely, Chantilly, Virginia — strap on an Oculus Rift headset and experience some simulated virtual gravity from inside the Endurance, the spaceship from Nolan’s film. An “Oculus Rift,” in case you were looking at those words with the same cocked-head confusion as a dog hearing another dog on TV, is this: virtual reality. Or, at least virtual reality for your face; the Oculus Rift is a boxy, black goggle-like eyepiece that lets you see into a digitally-created world, translating all your head and eye movements so you can look around and see digitally anything you want. Digitally. For the most part, the...

The eligibility period for the 2014 Grammy Awards is drawing near: to be considered for the most coveted award of all, album of the year, a record had to come out between Oct. 1, 2013 and Sept. 30, 2014. A number of acts who would normally be considered leading contenders, including Foo Fighters and Taylor Swift, will miss this year’s cut-off. Below is a list of albums we think will be under heavy consideration as the first-round ballots go out to Grammy voters over the next few weeks. In no particular order: “Beyonce,” Beyonce: I’d say this is a sure thing, but I thought a nod for Justin Timberlake’s “The 20/20 Experience” was a given last year and it got blanked. Even though it didn’t spawn many radio hits, “Beyonce” loomed large since its surprise December release, not only for the critical hosannahs it received, but for the overall arc of the project’s music,...

Though there are a number of reasons that WCW died, historically, a lot of the blame has gone to the company paying wrestlers way above market value. While WCW would still have lost tens of millions of dollars in the year 2000 even if every wrestler had worked for free, there’s no question that a the pay scale was out of control and often made little sense. They were in a promotional war, and the ability to outbid the WWF was one of the clear advantages they had. Even if they weren’t actually outbidding anyone in practice.
When Sonny Onoo and other former WCW talent sued the company in a racial discrimination lawsuit in 2000, among the documents released to the plaintiffs in the discovery process were various printouts of WCW’s roster databases, emails pertaining to contract negotiations, and so on.
