Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” has been covered by everyone from Avril Lavigne to the Grateful Dead — and, most famously, by Guns N’ Roses, who made it a hit in the early Nineties. Now, actress-singer Sophie Thatcher is tackling the classic for her upcoming horror film Heretic.
The cover sounds like a lo-fi lullaby, with Thatcher delicately laying down her vocals against slide guitar. “The cover version feels very melancholic and feminine, and more dreamy and atmospheric, whereas [Dylan’s] is far more straightforward,” she tells Rolling Stone. “There...

Decades never start quite on time, pop-culturally speaking, and it’s tempting to say that the Sixties didn’t really kick off until the Beatles played The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, just as “Smells Like Teen Spirt” started the Nineties in 1991. But as David Browne’s new book, Talkin’ Greenwich Village: The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America’s Bohemian Music Capital, suggests, the Sixties’ spirit really began in Greenwich Village, not Liverpool — and the music that really got it going was written by Bob Dylan. In June of 1963, Peter,...

Despite a big boost in business from late summer titles like “Deadpool & Wolverine,” AMC Theatres couldn’t get into the black in Q3 of 2024. The company reported a $20.7 million net loss in Wednesday’s earnings report.
Here are some of the topline figures:
Revenue: Thanks to films like “Deadpool 3,” Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” and “Twisters,” and Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” revenue for AMC reached a strong $1.33 billion. Still, that was approximately 5% down from last year, when “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” combined to set box office records.
Eps: Despite another quarterly loss, Q3 2024 is the closest AMC has been to getting in the black, reporting an adjusted loss per share of 6 cents that’s just above the 7-cent projections from Zacks Investment Research. That’s also slightly above the loss of 9 cents from the prior year’s Q3 and up from last quarter’s 43-cent loss.

This December, Timothée Chalamet will portray Bob Dylan in the film A Complete Unknown. The movie will follow Dylan in the early 1960s. It begins with his arrival in New York City and concludes at his decision to go electric. Dylan is a notoriously prickly and private celebrity, but he is reportedly very supportive of the film.
Bob Dylan is throwing his support behind the Timothée Chalamet film ‘A Complete Unknown’
James Mangold, director of A Complete Unknown, sat down with Dylan to discuss the film. In their conversation, he explained that it was “not really a Bob Dylan biopic.” Instead, he views it as an ensemble film about that period in New York.
“The reason Bob has been so supportive of us making it, is … as in all cases I think of the best true-life movies are never cradle to grave but they’re about a very specific moment,...

The cinematic landscape of Hollywood is getting ready for not one but two biopics on music two legends: Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. It is old news now that the latter would be led by The Bear actor Jeremy Allen White and is titled Deliver Me from Nowhere. The hype surrounding it is huge, and now with Timothée Chalamet at the forefront of A Complete Unknown, comparisons are inevitable.

As the AFI Fest concludes, Clint Eastwood’s taut courtroom thriller “Juror #2” saw better reviews than Bob Zemeckis’ Tom Hanks drama “Here.” Screen Talk co-host Ryan Lattanzio wrote a positive reaction but upon further refection, finds flaws, including the de-aging techniques used on Hanks and Robin Wright, the “Forrest Gump” costars. Anne Thompson wonders if Zemeckis’s obsession with technology has helped his filmmaking.
Eastwood’s movie is opening on just 50 screens nationwide, with no current plans to expand. Why is Warner Bros., his studio home for decades, which benefited from box office and Oscars from such films as “Unforgiven,” “Million Dollar Baby’ and “American Sniper,” treating the 94-year-old so badly? Because studio chief David Zaslav has lost the belief that a straight, no-frills drama like this can perform at the box office. Does a movie have to be an event now to lure audiences?...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit Best Picture, which is still without a clear-cut frontrunner.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled our weekly column back around to the Best Picture race, and after five weeks, this field remains very much in flux — so much so that I don’t even know what film could stake claim to being this year’s “frontrunner.” Ok, that’s not totally true. In terms of the odds, “Anora” remains the pick du jour. But even the film’s biggest fan, aka me, would probably bet against “Anora” ultimately winning Best Picture next year. “Emilia Pérez,” my pick for Best Picture right now, is in second place in the odds — but that doesn’t feel right either. “Anora,” a free-wheeling comedy about a sex worker who becomes entangled with the family of a Russian oligarch, led the Gotham Awards, picking up four nominations, including a nod for best feature.
“Nickel Boys,” the story of two African-American teens who are sent to an abusive reform school, and “I Saw the TV Glow,” a psychological horror film about high schoolers who begin to lose touch with reality, were close behind with three nods apiece.
“Nickel Boys” will vie for best feature alongside “Anora.” Other nominees for the top prize include the erotic drama “Babygirl,” the black comedy “A Different Man” and “Challengers,” a love triangle that unfolds against the backdrop of professional tennis. There were several notable omissions, with critically heralded films like “The Brutalist” and “Conclave” passed over for a best feature nomination. “The Brutalist” did earn two nominations for its star Adrien Brody and for the supporting turn of Guy Pearce.

Timothée Chalamet recreates one of Bob Dylan’s most famous songs and visuals with a version of “Subterranean Homesick Blues” for the upcoming biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet’s new recording of the 1965 classic is the fullest offering yet of the actor’s take on Dylan’s singular singing voice. The previously released trailer for a Complete Unknown just included snippets of his renditions of songs like “Girl from the North Country” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”
The visual, meanwhile, appears to incorporate some scenes from the upcoming biopic, plus some behind-the-scenes footage.

Searchlight Pictures released its latest marketing video for James Mangold’s upcoming Bob Dylan movie “A Complete Unknown,” again focusing on how star Timothee Chalamet mimics the legendary singer-songwriter in the forthcoming film.
In the new featurette, Chalamet as Dylan sings “Subterranean Homesick Blues” and partially recreates Dylan’s famous video for the song where he flips through placards emblazoned with the track’s lyrics.
Here’s the official synopsis for the film from Searchlight:
New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide. Every now and then a man comes along who just captures the moment and becomes the It Guy. Right now, Timothée Chalamet is that guy, so much so that a lookalike contest was recently held in which the winner got $50 – do you know how many peaches that could buy?! Adding to the story, however, was that Timothée Chalamet himself turned up…looking the least like Timothée Chalamet out of anyone there.
Over the weekend, the Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest was held in New York City, bringing thousands into Washington Square Park to see who had the aura of the namesake celebrity. It seemed like everywhere you turned there was Willy Wonka and Paul Atreides and even just street clothes Chalamet. According to multiple sources, RSVP numbers were anywhere between 900 and 2,500. That’s an insane amount of people that look like – or were at least told they looked like – Timothée Chalamet.

Timothée Chalamet himself showed up at a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest in Washington Square Park in New York City on Sunday afternoon, posing for photos with shocked doppelgängers and fans who had gathered to watch the competition.
The contest, which was promoted via street flyers and on the social media over the last few weeks, saw multiple Chalamet lookalikes compete for a grand prize of $50. The real-life Chalamet showed up about 30 minutes into the competition, initially sneaking through the crowd by concealing his face with a mask and baseball hat.
The NYPD eventually broke up the fun, dispersing the crowd and issuing a $500 fine to the event’s organizers for failing to secure a permit for the event. One of the contestants was also detained by police for an undisclosed reason. Despite the disruption, a Staten Island college student named Miles Mitchell was crowned the winner.

On Sunday, the Oscar nominee made a surprise appearance at New York City’s Madison Square Park, where hundreds of fans gathered to compete in a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest.
In videos shared to social media, several doppelgängers posed for photos in the sea of people before the Dune star joined them, resulting in some genuinely shocked faces. A frenzy broke out as he hugged his admirers and posed with them.
Incidentally, Chalamet didn’t win the contest, arriving with a mustache and a shorter head of hair — after portraying Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
The contest took place after flyers popped up around the city with a Qr link to the event’s Partiful page and the offer of a $50 cash prize.

Is the Netflix Oscar drought finally about to end?
The streamer has long been chasing the elusive Academy Award for best picture. After a series of near misses, 2024 might just be the year the streaming giant claims the coveted prize — thanks to Jacques Audiard’s critically lauded crime musical “Emilia Pérez.”
The Spanish-language drama premiered to fanfare at Cannes and has a star-studded cast, including Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz. The bold narrative, riveting performances and groundbreaking representation garnered critical acclaim, leading to a shared best actress prize for the four stars. Some pundits believe “Emilia” has the goods to go the way of Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” which in 2020 became the first non-English-language film to win best picture. “Emilia” is also France’s submission for international feature, which further positions it as a viable Oscar darling.

"It was important for me to sing and play on set because it was in the spirit of the movie to do it live." Searchlight Pictures has revealed a new behind-the-scenes featurette for the film A Complete Unknown, opening in theaters this December. We also featured the official trailer a few weeks ago as they begin their big marketing push for the release. The film is about the early days of maestro musician Bob Dylan's life. At the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, a young Bob Dylan shakes up his act on the folk music scene by going electric and siring rock as the voice of a generation - defining one of the most transformative moments in 20th century music. Timothée Chalamet stars as a young Bob Dylan in this film written and directed by James Mangold, coming off of his work on the Indiana Jones movie. It also stars Edward Norton as Pete Seeger,...

Timothée Chalamet looks and sounds eerily like the young Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” In this new featurette from Searchlight, he talks about taking on this demanding role, which required him to play the guitar and harmonica while singing such classic tunes as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Like a Rolling Stone.” As the Oscar nominee notes,”Bob wouldn’t let himself be boxed in, which for me as a young artist is the most inspiring.”
The film, which is out on Christmas Day, chronicles the rise to fame of Dylan. The Minnesota native was just 19 when he moved to New York’s Greenwich Village in 1961. He soon cracked the folk music scene and rocked his fans in 1965 with his electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival.
“A Complete Unknown” director James Mangold weighs in on the decision to record all the musical performances in real-time.

Adrien Brody and Nicole Kidman are back in the Oscars race this year with their respective films “The Brutalist” and “Babygirl” from A24, both already making the rounds in the awards contention with strong festival premieres. The stars are now looking to claim victory in their respective categories of Best Actor and Best Actress, and if that sounds familiar, it’s because they both won these same races 22 years ago for “The Pianist” and “The Hours.” Can they strike gold for the second time and become the first duo in Oscars history to win the lead categories twice in the same years?

How do you even begin to prepare to play Bob Dylan? The folk musician who changed the entire scene is at the heart of James Mangold’s new film, A Complete Unknown – and for star Timothée Chalamet, the challenge was to find a way to make the real Dylan… well, known. First came a three-and-a-half year period of learning to play guitar, getting to grips with Dylan’s songs and unique vocal style. And from there, it was all about letting go and reaching for something real beyond just a surface impression.
“Bob has a very specific, soulful voice, but what most defines it is his negotiation with his own words and the way he tells the story,” Mangold tells Empire, digging into his and Chalamet’s approach to the icon. “That essence is what Timmy and I were after more than a specific mannerism or tic, per se.” The...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Best Supporting Actor, which ostensibly has one open slot.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! The Mets are on the brink, the Yankees are hateful, and we’re here to type about Best Supporting Actor. So what we’re left with is a group of newcomers to the Oscars stage, one massive movie star, and a couple of “Succession” Emmy winners. Let’s start there, with your favorite Roy son, Kieran Culkin. Adrien Brody won an Oscar at the 2003 ceremony for his performance in “The Pianist.” Despite his impressive career, that film has brought him his only nomination. Things could change in early 2025 now that his latest film “The Brutalist” has him competing for Best Actor. An Oscars victory would add him into an exclusive club that currently just has seven members: performers to win two Academy Awards for their only two nominations.
Our Gold Derby odds for Best Actor currently have Brody tied for second place with Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”) at 9/2 odds. Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) is out front in first place at 4/1 odds. We then have Timothee Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”) at 6/1, Daniel Craig (“Queer”) at 21/2, Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”) at 16/1, and John David Washington (“The Piano Lesson”) at 30/1.

Is there room at the best picture table for more than one “part two?”
This year, several installments in established franchises are banging on the Academy’s door, hoping for a coveted slot in the category. With no clear frontrunner, this could be the season that more than one sequel secures a place in the race. That has happened only once, in 2022 (“Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick”).
The Oscars have long hesitated to embrace anything with a Roman numeral affixed to it. Historically, only nine sequels have been nominated for best picture: “The Bells of St. Mary’s” (1945), “The Godfather Part II” (1974), “The Godfather Part III” (1990), “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2002), “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003), “Toy Story 3” (2010), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022) and “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022). Just two — “Godfather 2” and “Return of the King” — won.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” In 2022 this prize went to “Dune” while “Top Gun: Maverick” won in 2023. The reigning champ is “The Zone of Interest.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Sound.)

I’m back! Well, not quite but working towards it. We're going to do an 80s theme in early November, okay? But let’s start with a question and a list to prove that I have actually been watching movies (and am alive) though I’ve rarely been writing and miss it terribly.
Has it been a good, bad, or ugly year for the always threatened Movie Musical genre?
The greatest of all movie genres is always threatened with extinction but it's also resilient and still with us almost a century after its debut. The year isn't over so the initial bolded question is premature. Mean Girls was a dud early in the year and the highly anticipated Joker Folie A Deux is currently flopping which serves it right for sidelining Lady Gaga (of all people) and being so uncomfortable about calling itself a musical. Searchlight Pictures would love to work with Emerald Fennell on a future project. But times are tough, even for a distributor owned by Disney (and even with its former boss running the whole operation), and Searchlight gets consistently “priced out” by the deep pocketed streamers.
Katie Goodson-Thomas, the head of international production and development for Searchlight in the UK, was blunt about her specialized-distribution business and the larger competitive marketplace.
“We can’t be competitive with Netflix. It’s just not going to happen…or Apple or Amazon,” she said in a panel discussion at the BFI London Film Festival (via THR).
Goodson-Thomas mentioned Fennell as an example of how Searchlight gets beat out by the streamers and how that “happens on a daily basis — it really does.” The “Saltburn” director is next making an adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” for MRC that will star Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. - Gold Derby
A crucial change in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Actor now has Ralph Fiennes saying, “Amen.” The “Conclave” star has officially broken his tie with Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”) at the upcoming 2025 Oscars. Fiennes now has leading 4/1 odds to win the trophy, compared to Domingo’s second-place odds of 9/2. It goes without saying that it’s still quite early in this awards season, and things will undoubtedly keep changing as our Experts, Editors and Users continue to update their predictions.
Fiennes plays Cardinal Thomas Lawrence in the Focus Features mystery-thriller from director Edward Berger. Following the death of the Pope, Lawrence is tasked with overseeing the election of the successor, but he soon realizes many of the candidates have personal scandals that could upend the church. Fellow cast members include Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, John Lithgow as Cardinal Tremblay, Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco and Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes.
