Tony-winning directors George C. Wolfe and Jack O’Brien will each receive the 2024 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre next month, Tony administrators announced today.

Steve Martin may be riding high on his success with comedy-crime series Only Murders in the Building but, in a new documentary, he reflects on some troughs in his long career as well as the many high points.
The comedian – who got his big break as a writer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, became one of the all-time most popular hosts of Saturday Night Live and went on to huge success with movies including The Man with Two Brains, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Roxanne and LA Story – is the subject of the two-part documentary Steve! (Martin), directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville, which premieres on Apple March 29.
The doc includes an angst-inducing clip from 1996 when Martin was ambushed at the premiere of Sgt Bilko, one of his least successful movies, by the British red-carpet disruptor Dennis Pennis, played by comedian Paul Kaye. Footage, which went viral at the time, showed...

Jerry Seinfeld calls him ‘the most idolised comedian ever’. Yet after five decades at the top, success still makes him cringe. He discusses doubting himself, starring in a documentary – and that Dennis Pennis encounter
I didn’t expect Steve Martin to be funny. Sure, it was his skewwhiff sensibility that made The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains, LA Story and Bowfinger so deliriously inspired. And he was comedy’s first double-platinum-record-selling, stadium-touring megastar; he began wearing a white suit on stage only so that he could be seen by fans in the cheap seats several postcodes away. He crafted riotous slapstick crescendos in All of Me and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and displayed a literary flair even at his silliest. No one who has seen Roxanne, the modern-day interpretation of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac that found Martin investing his comedy with emotional weight for the first time, will...

Iconic actor and comedian Steve Martin is finally getting his own documentary after spending more than half a century in the spotlight.
The “Bowfinger,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” and “Only Murders in the Building” star is the subject of Oscar-winning documentarian Morgan Neville’s latest feature, which charts Martin’s personal life to his rise on “SNL” and later, his writing, directing, and acting career.
Titled “Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces,” the film dives into Martin’s extraordinary story from two distinct points of view, with companion documentaries that feature never-before-seen footage and raw insights into Steve’s personal and professional trials and triumphs. The “Then” portion chronicles Martin’s early struggles and meteoric rise to revolutionize standup before walking away at 35. The “Now” section focuses on the present day, with Martin in the golden years of his career, teasing retirement, retracing the transformation that led to happiness in his art and personal life.

"I wanted to know America, like I once knew the seams of a basketball." HBO Max has revealed an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary called Rolling Along: An American Story, available streaming at the start of February on Max. "A story about all of us." Written & performed by two-time NBA Champion, former U.S. Senator, and lifelong storyteller Bill Bradley. The former NBA star and Senator recounts his life from Mississippi childhood to Princeton basketball fame, to the NBA, to 18 years in the Senate focused on rights, education & growth, and finally his presidential bid. After spending six years writing, developing, and performing his story on stage as a one-man show, Bradley partnered with the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Frank Oz, Academy Award winner Spike Lee, and Emmy Award-winning producer Mike Tollin to share this performative autobiography. Steve Martin has responded to allegations made by Miriam Margolyes, his co-star in 1986’s Little Shop of Horrors.
In her new memoir Oh Miriam: Stories From An Extraordinary Life, the veteran actress wrote of playing a dental assistant to Martin’s Orin Scrivello D.D.S., specifically a sequence in which Martin’s character slams a door in the face of Margolyes’ character and punches her.
“I was hit all day by doors opening in my face; repeatedly punched, slapped and knocked down by an unlovely and unapologetic Steve Martin – perhaps he was method acting – and came home grumpy with a splitting headache.”
Her overall appraisal? Martin was “undeniably brilliant, but horrid to me.”
Martin addressed the allegations in a statement to Deadline:
“When I first read Miriam Margolyes’ pejorative account of our scene in Little Shop of Horrors, I was surprised. My memory is that we had a good communication as professional actors.

It's true: "The Muppets Take Manhattan" is getting a fresh coat of paint for its new release on home media courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The third "Muppets" feature film and, sadly, the last one that creator Jim Henson and puppeteer Richard Hunt worked on prior to their untimely deaths, "Manhattan" sees Kermit and the gang graduating from college and headed to New York City in the hopes of turning their humble little stage musical, "Manhattan Melodies," into a Broadway sensation. But as you might expect, the suits that run the theatrical industry aren't quite as enthused about the prospect of a show all about frogs and dogs and bears and chickens and ... stuff.
I've already gotten on my soapbox about how I feel "The Muppets Take Manhattan" doesn't get the credit it...

The sun has set on Charlie Day’s “Fool’s Paradise” before it’s even risen.
The cringe comedy that serves as both a farcical ode to Old Hollywood and a Charlie Chaplin-esque platform for writer-director-star Day is…not good. Pair the off-beat script with a slew of celebrity cameos and the film feels more like a “Threat Level Midnight” inside joke amongst Day’s A-lister pals. It’s an Adam Sandler sensibility of filmmaking without the wide-appeal marketability. At best, “Fool’s Paradise” could have been a hilarious “The Other Two” episode about the hollow insanity of Hollywood and the sleight-of-hand trick behind the magic of movies. Sadly, “Fool’s Paradise” instead keeps viewers trapped in the nine circles of hell.
Day pulls double (quadruple?) duty as a psychiatric patient who has lost the ability to speak due to severe trauma, and his misbehaving Method actor doppleganger, Thomas Bingsley. The film...

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

The jury system can by trying, but “Jury Duty” — a doc-style comedy series coming to Freevee on April 7 — examines it through the eyes of one juror. The catch: The actual juror, Ronald Gladden, doesn’t realize the case is fake and everyone else is an actor. All the crazy machinations inside the courtroom are planned, and everyone is in on it, except for Gladden. Will this lone juror be able to find his way to justice despite all of the chaos surrounding the case?

Over his decades-spanning career, Mike Myers has crafted some of comedy's most memorable characters. You might know him most fondly as the headbanging hero Wayne of "Wayne's World," whether on "Saturday Night Live" during his '89-'95 tenure or in the celebrated movie adaptations. Perhaps you recall how he dominated the late '90s as both villain and swinging protagonist in the spy-parodic "Austin Powers" movies, and the subsequent inability to walk down the street without hearing a poorly-feigned Dr. Evil impression. Maybe ogres are your bag, making Myers' turn as an unrefined Scottish mean green machine Shrek the zenith of his talents. Or perhaps the name is fairly new for emergent comedy fans, the product of stumbling upon the cult-centric laugh-fest "The Pentaverate" on Netflix. Myers' influence on comedy is well-established, but what influences the influencer?

On December 11, 1992, “The Muppet Christmas Carol” was released to theaters. In his three-star review, Roger Ebert said that the movie “could have done with a few more songs than it has.” And he was right – up until the very last minute, there was an extra song (“When Love Is Gone”) that was removed at the insistence of a pushy Disney executive. Now, all these years later (and after one very close call), the song has been reinstated. “The Muppet Christmas Carol” is finally whole.
This is the story of how the movie came to be, how it lost a song and how that song eventually was found again.

On May 16, 1990, Jim Henson died following a short illness. He was only 53. (It was ultimately ruled toxic shock syndrome caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.)

There are few things in this world that wouldn't become more enjoyable with the addition of the Muppets. Are you suffering through the child's birthday party you're attending? Well, here come the Muppets to liven things up! Is the anti-smoking PSA you're watching a bit depressing? Send in the Muppets! Divorce proceedings got you down? It's much more fun when you discover that The Great Gonzo is the judge!
This universal rule is why "The Muppet Christmas Carol" is so great. The movie is wonderful, however, because it also has Michael Caine playing the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. The film was the directorial debut of Brian Henson — the son of the legendary puppeteer, Jim Henson — and was greatly enhanced by the clash in styles of two legendary performers: Michael Caine and Kermit the Frog. While Kermit and his Muppet co-workers are known for their madcap antics, Caine went into the film with a different mindset.

"When I said yes to directing, I had no idea how we were going to do the plant," says Frank Oz to the Hollywood Reporter. The directing gig was for a big-screen adaptation of "Little Shop of Horrors," a musical comedy of terrors that began as a 1960 Roger Corman picture, then an off-off-Broadway musical before producer David Geffen got his hands on the rights to a new big-screen version. The plant was sentient, grew rapidly, and craved blood for its Venus flytrap-like mouth. The mayhem that ensues when wimpy florist Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) discovers it makes up the runtime of the charming production.
For the 1986 adaptation, Oz would choreograph fourteen catchy musical numbers from the off-Broadway show's music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, including the hopeful fantasy ballad "Somewhere That's Green". It was a successful expansion of the little rock show that once premiered at the...

Amazon’s Prime Video service has a few new series debuting, including “Riches.” Starring Deborah Ayorinde, from “Them,” the series is described as “a high-stakes family drama about the exploits of the stylish, privileged, and super-successful Richards siblings vying for control over the family business.”
The streamer also brings actor John Krasinski back into the world of Tom Clancy with the third season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” This installment finds CIA officer Jack Ryan wrongly accused of treason and on the run from his own government as he races against the clock to stop a global catastrophe. The season hits December 21.

When Muppets creator Jim Henson died in 1990, the future of the Muppets franchise felt up in the air to its fans. At the time, Disney had already been in negotiations to purchase the Muppets, but Henson was on record with his refusal. Disney, still with a foot in the door, co-financed two Muppet feature films in the 1990s -- "The Muppet Christmas Carol" and "Muppet Treasure Island," both directed by Henson's son Brian -- which proved to audiences that the Muppets were capable of living on. Indeed, the two films provided a fascinating new premise for the Muppets: they would be stock players in adaptations of classic literature. Sadly, this tack did not play itself out, and after the not-very-good, straight-to-video "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz," that angle was abandoned.
Come now, Disney, "Muppet Midsummer Night's Dream," "Muppet Dracula," and "Muppet Moby-Dick" await.

Chase Mishkin, the Broadway producer whose roster of productions scored two Tony Awards (for Dame Edna: The Royal Tour and Memphis), died July 24 at her home in Manhattan. She was 85.
Her death was made public in a New York Times obituary today. Mishkin’s daughter Julie Kahle told the newspaper that her mother had dementia and had suffered two strokes.
Mishkin began her theater producing career just shy of her 60th birthday following the death of her husband, carpet manufacturer Ralph Mishkin. Her first production was a Los Angeles staging of Trish Vradenburg’s The Apple Doesn’t Fall…, a drama about Alzheimer’s that opened on Broadway in 1996 with Leonard Nimoy directing.
Though her first production was not a commercial success, closing the day after opening, Mishkin would return to Broadway more than 30 times, taking part in productions of, among others, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, A Moon for the Misbegotten,...

The 1964 comedy "Bedtime Story" starring Marlon Brando, David Niven, and Shirley Jones is about two conmen with clashing styles that find themselves competing to scam the same wealthy heiress. In 1988 Orion Pictures remade the film as "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with Steve Martin and Michael Caine. The movie would be made again in 2019 as "The Hustle" starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, with the gender roles flipped.
Of the three versions, it is perhaps an unrealized vision for the film that might have led to the most memorable of them all. The 1988 pairing of Martin and Caine was brilliant, with Caine's...

There is something of a knack to making a film that chooses to centre on dislikable characters, some succeed others face plant spectacularly and sadly The Hustle is more a case of the latter. Essentially a gender reversed remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, itself a remake of Pillow Talk, this is one con that is very much not on.
The basic principle of the film is to make a worthwhile feministic argument about certain types of men and their inherent egos and how these clued up con women can manipulate that base instinct to their advantage and initially there is an idea there. An early scene where Rebel Wilson’s Penny Rust hoodwinks a sex-obsessed man into coughing up his cash to “create” a more idealised female in his own mind really does present a truthfully twisted view of people who think with their pants over their conscience (if they even have one). Sadly,...

The late great Gene Siskel had a litmus test: is this movie more interesting than a documentary of the same actors having lunch? In the case of Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in The Hustle, the answer is a resounding no. The material keeps Hathaway at a fraction of her potential wattage, and Hollywood doesn't quite know what to do with Rebel Wilson yet.
The Hustle, in theatres now, is a remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, although the earlier film isn't required viewing. Hathaway plays Josephine Chesterfield, a skilled con artist with a too-affected British accent who uses her natural charm and willowy figure to swindle men out of money in a little French Riviera town. A police sergeant works with her – for a price, of course. And Chesterfield can pay it. She's made millions doing this.

The Hustle is a gender-swapped rehash of "buddy films" featuring tricksters who are out to outwit each other and con people of their money. The films that immediately come to your mind are the 1964 released "Bedtime Story" starring David Niven and Marlon Brando, and the 1988 released "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" featuring Michael Caine and Steve Martin.
Director Chris Addison replaces the heroes of the original with women, so here we have Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson playing high-stake fraudsters who swindle naive people. She does so probably, as Hathaway's character puts it, "men can't imagine that a woman is cleverer than they are." And she fails miserably.
Set in the sophisticated but fictional town of Beaumont-sur-Mer, Josephine Chesterfield (Anne Hathaway), a glamorous seductress fleeces gullible wealthy men from all corners of the world. Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as a pair of rival con artists in The Hustle, a remake of 1988′s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (with Michael Caine and Steve Martin), which was itself a remake of 1964′s Bedtime Story, with David Niven and Marlon Brando. That might sound like a tantalising proposition on paper, but the actual film is a profound disappointment with an almost criminal lack of laughs.

Anne Hathaway's latest star vehicle, The Hustle, a gender-flipped loose remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988), debuted this weekend. We're happy to see her back when she belongs -- in a leading role on the big screen.
She's one of our greatest contemporary stars, the haters be damned. Thankfully the anti-Hathaway brigade has quieted down a bit after her savvy post-Oscar low profile. She started right at the top with the $100 million hit The Princess Diaries, a rare and delicious but precarious place to start as a teenager as there's usually only one way to go. But Hathaway proved resilient, weathering the rise to adult stardom with inarguable skill buoyed not just by remarkable beauty (those huge expressive eyes are a camera's dream) but by even more remarkable talent and versatility as an actor.
The star, now 36, has made 27 features. How many of her films have you seen?...

‘Top End Wedding.’
Pokémon fans flocked to the franchise’s second movie in 20 years last weekend but even more people were keen to see Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, which reigned again in its third frame.
Meanwhile word-of-mouth is paying off for Universal’s Top End Wedding, which eased by just 22 per cent in its second weekend.
Universal’s comedy The Hustle, a female reboot of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, over-indexed its Us opening, probably due to co-star Rebel Wilson.
Roadshow’s Poms, an ensemble comedy about seniors in a retirement home who form a cheer-leading squad, had little to cheer about, unwisely scheduled against The Hustle.
A passion project for Kenneth Branagh, Sony’s Shakespearean drama All is True had a respectable debut on limited screens. Of the two new Indian releases, Maharshi proved far more appealing than Student Of The Year 2.

For the first time in nearly a year, two films grossed over $50 million in one weekend. In its third weekend, “Avengers: Endgame” edged out “Pokémon Detective Pikachu,” but the margin was closer than projected. There were three other wide releases, but these two films made up two thirds of the overall total. Still, with this weekend $30 million higher than 2018, the year-to-date deficit now stands at 9%, or just under $600 million.
Legendary Entertainment’s “Pokémon” (which opened in Japan ahead of other territories) has amassed $170 million so far, $58 million of that domestic. With a $150 million budget, and likely close to that in marketing costs, it minimally needs to double that amount (more most likely) to be a good return on investment.
It also has potential a longer-term franchise. The film versions of the characters have previously been G rated, with the biggest being the 1999 animated “Pokemon: The First Movie.” It opened about...

Disney and Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” remained victorious at the North American box office, collecting $65 million during its third weekend in theaters.
“Avengers: Endgame” officially passed “Avengers: Infinity War” ($679 million) and “Black Panther” ($700 million) to become the third-highest grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office with $724 million in ticket sales. It’s still the second-biggest film ever globally with $2.48 billion, pacing behind just “Avatar” with $2.78 billion.
However, “Endgame’s” third straight box office success didn’t come without a little competition. Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “Detective Pikachu” gave Earth’s Mightiest Heroes a run for their money. The studio’s live-action Pokemon adaptation pulled in a solid $58 million when it launched in 4,202 venues.
“I’m giddy,” Warner Bros.’ head of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein, said on a call Sunday morning. “This is a big weekend for ‘Detective Pikachu.'”
Goldstein has reason for the good cheer.

3Rd Update, Saturday Am: Refresh for chart and more analysis Great dating here by Warner Bros. for Legendary’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu. The studio waited for the crazy on Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame to calm down and is now squeezing out an estimated $57.4M opening in second to the superheroes’ now $61.7M third weekend.
That said, despite having an estimated lower third weekend, Endgame is still expected to cross $700M today with around $25.8M, tying Star Wars Force Awakens’ 16 day record and still become the third highest grossing domestic pic of all time, surpassing Black Panther with $722.1M.
Pikachu won last night $20.7M (including previews) to Endgame‘s $16.2M. He landed an A- CinemaScore, which is great. He received 4 stars from general audiences and parents and 4 1/2 from kids under 12 in ComScore/Screen Engine PostTrak exits. Those who bought tickets were 56% male and 61% under 25 with 32% under 17 years old. Breaking out general demos,...

You don’t need immersive technologies like Dolby Cinema, Screen X or 4Dx to feel the effects of The Hustle. After 94 minutes without a single laugh, you’ll definitely feel the pain knowing that you’ve wasted time and money on this dreadful farce. Allegedly a remake of the far superior Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (which itself was a remake of Bedtime Story), the Chris Addison-directed picture credits four screenwriters and yet adds nothing to the original formula nor does it do anything exciting with a well-established genre built on double and triple crosses.
Of the four credited writers, two have passed on years ago, previously credited with Bedtime Story. Dale Launer received credit for this mess as the writer of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This leaves Jac Schaeffer, the only new writer with a credit to bear the brunt of the shame for a picture that no doubt was conceived...

Audiences said “I choose you, ‘Detective Pikachu'” at the box office on Thursday, with the live-action Pokemon movie earning $5.7 million in its Thursday previews.
Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu,” which expands to 4,202 screens this weekend, hopes to squeak by “Avengers: Endgame” for the No. 1 spot at the box office as Marvel’s epic enters into its third weekend off an already historic box office run. Independent trackers are split as to what to expect for “Detective Pikachu,” with projections going anywhere from the $50 million range to as high as $70 million. “Detective Pikachu” also opens against “The Hustle” and “Poms” in wide release.
For comparison, Warner Bros. and DC’s similarly comedic “Shazam!” made $5.9 million during its Thursday previews and went on to gross $53.5 million in its opening weekend.

Chicago – As the “Oceans Eight” remake of last year proved, it is simply not enough to redo a film and flip the gender focus. Anne Hathaway may be the kiss of death for this genre, as she appeared both in O8 and the current “The Hustle,” which in turn is a remake of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (1988). Rebel Wilson, doing what Rebel Wilson does, portrays her sidekick.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Hathaway and Wilson have little chemistry together, but that is the least of sins for “The Hustle.” Not only is the title lazy as hell, but the whole she-bang (ha) is flat and unfunny. It’s been years since I’ve seen the original – which was in itself a remake of the 1964 film “Bedtime Story” – but both those films must have more life than this tepid exercise in dreck. The screenplay credits list four names, a sure tip that the film we’re about to see is lost,...

1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels isn’t often cited as the best that 1980s comedy had to offer, but it did have one thing going for it – Steve Martin at his absolute best.
With Michael Caine infusing his successful conman with pomposity and pretentiousness, Martin took the role of Freddy Benson and made it as memorable as any other he performed during his decade at the pinnacle of Hollywood comedy.
Which is why it’s baffling that Chris Addison’s 2019 remake fails to update the script, rather, the movie asks Rebel Wilson to achieve the impossible feat of repeating Martin’s antics and elevating a decent, if somewhat lightweight story to comedy glory.
Wilson plays Penny, a small-time con artist who ‘catfishes’ young men by convincing them they’re going to meet the woman of their dreams. When they meet her instead, should they show the requisite level of disappointment, she...

“The Hustle” is rated PG-13. Like many movies before it, however, the Anne Hathaway/Rebel Wilson comedy initially received an R from the MPAA and had to petition to have that reduced. Speaking to Yahoo!, Wilson claimed that sexism contributed to the harsh rating — not least because “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” of which “The Hustle” is a female-fronted remake, was classified as PG.
“I thought it was extremely unfair that a reboot of that was given an R-rating just because us two sexy ladies were in it,” the actress said. Steve Martin and Michael Caine starred in “Scoundrels,” which was released in 1988 — four years after the PG-13 rating was implemented.
“I thought it was quite sexist that male-driven comedies were much more likely to get PG ratings…when, on a scientific analysis, female-driven comedies had less swear words, less nudity and less violence,” Wilson added.

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson team up for the terrible new comedy The Hustle. Bewitched and bamboozled, men tend to make fools of themselves around this pair, con artists plying their trade in the French Riviera. Glamorous and cunning Josephine Chesterfield (Hathaway) has a talent for defrauding gullible wealthy men from all corners of the world. The more fun-loving Penny Rust (Wilson) is an Aussie who fleeces her marks in neighborhood bars. Despite their different methods, they team up in France to swindle a naïve tech billionaire (Alex Sharp). Bank accounts are emptied, true love is declared, and common sense left in the gutter.
The Hustle feminizes the perennially male profession of con artists. This might seem like a fresh take if we hadn’t just seen women con artists (including Ms Hathaway!) in Oceans Eight a few months ago. There’s little to keep you entertained here as Hathaway...

Mother's Day weekend is looking as if it will be yet another Avengers-led weekend at the box office as Avengers: Endgame will become only the fourth film ever to top $700 million at the domestic box office this weekend, but this holiday weekend won't only be about Avengers. Warner Bros. is releasing the highly anticipated video game adaptation Pokemon: Detective Pikachu in just over 4,200 locations while Stx and Uar will be vying for Mother's Day audiences with Poms and The Hustle respectively. Additionally, Disney has changed things up with Fox Searchlight's Tolkien, which was originally scheduled to begin its limited run this weekend, but instead the Mouse House will give the film a wide berth in nearly 1,500 locations. Entering its third weekend in domestic release, Disney's Avengers: Endgame is looking to top $700 million this weekend and, in fact, should push over $730 million which will make it the third highest grossing...

Riding in on the wave of gender-swapped remakes, The Hustle is a comedy whose timing is late in every sense of the word. Based on the 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which is itself a remake of 1964 Bedtime Story, The Hustle attempts to reboot the story of two wildly different con artists for the […]

With Elizabeth Holmes, dueling Fyre Festival documentaries, and the college admissions scandal, 2019 is the year of the scammer. You’d think the timing would be perfect for a gender-swapped remake of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” the ’80s comedy about competing con artists. But haha, jokes on you – and anyone who pays to see “The Hustle.” I saw it for free and still feel scammed by what is sure to be one of the worst movies of the year.

There is a smart movie nestled somewhere in director Chris Addison’s romp, “The Hustle,” but you have to weed through a whole lot of foolery to get to it. The new film is ripe for big laughs with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as, respectively, the snobby British bombshell with sticky fingers and the rough-around-the-edges though equally cunning con artist, but neither actress is given rich enough material to bring the film’s most interesting ideas to the finish line.
Hollywood has had a growing fascination with the female swindler, often to confront a larger issue of sexism and lack of female agency. And for about the first 20 minutes of “The Hustle,” it looks like screenwriter Jac Schaeffer — sharing credit with her antecedents, the creators of 1964’s “Bedtime Story,” Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning, as well as Dale Launer, who wrote that film’s 1988 remake, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” — is...
