Every time spooky season rolls around, there are a few traditions that brighten up our jack-o-lanterns. One of the funniest is a new episode of The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror.
A new year of gruesome and campy tales that brings our favorite family into unexpected chaos. From horror movie parodies to pop culture references, Treehouse of Horror is the chance to break away from the main story with some Halloween treats. And some tricks along the way!
With nearly 33 specials, The Simpsons has covered it all.
Each episode typically has three spooky segments, some arguably better than others. But with decades of stories (which you can watch online via TV Fanatic), there are many to choose from.
Below, we've picked out 25 stories from The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror that capture our love of the season. They're great binge-watches to get in the mood for Halloween. Check them out below!

Mike Flanagan, the master of soulful horror whose previous Netflix series include "The Haunting of Hill House," "The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Midnight Mass," and "The Midnight Club," is returning this year with a mix of familiar cast members and fresh faces for "The Fall of the House of Usher." Though it takes its name from the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, the series is set in the modern era and incorporates a number of other Poe tales.
Netflix has built up a solid library of original horror series, from mega-hit "Stranger Things" to lesser-recognized gems like "Marianne." Following the success of "The Haunting Hill House," Netflix inked a multi-year overall television deal with Flanagan and his longtime producing partner, Trevor Macy. The pair were poached by Amazon in December 2022, so "The Fall of the House of Usher" will be the last "Flana-verse" show to arrive on Netflix for the foreseeable future.

The recent passing of David Crosby was an enormous blow to the world of music. As a member of the Byrds, and one of Cosby, Stills & Nash, David Crosby helped revolutionize the folk-friendly arm of the entire 1960s rock scene. Compared to the kid-friendly bubblegum pop of the era, Crosby's work was more touching, emotional, and intelligent. He will be missed.
Also, Crosby grew up with an Oscar in his house. As it happens, David Crosby's father was none other than the Academy Award-winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby.
Floyd Crosby is not necessarily a household name, but his career as a cinematographer spanned over 30 years. Indeed, Floyd's career got an enormous kickstart in 1931 when he filmed F.W. Murnau's silent semi-documentary "Tabu: A Story of the South Seas." That film aimed to tell the authentic story of life on the island of Bora Bora, and, for the most part, cast only...

Jim Carrey’s Joe Biden read an Election Day retelling of The Raven — and welcomed back Kate McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton, who delivered a dire warning — during Saturday Night Live‘s Halloween cold open, the series’ last pre-Election Day episode.
“Greetings America, it’s a spooky time filled with demons and darkness. Also it’s Halloween. For some Trump voters, it’s the only day they’ll wear a mask,” Carrey’s Biden said.
“Which reminds me, there’s another holiday right around the corner: Election Day. If you’re like most Americans,...

Depending on how things go Tuesday, Dave Chappelle will be doing a mirror image performance of a sort when he hosts “Saturday Night Live” for the second time on Nov. 7, just 4 days after the 2020 presidential election.
The gig will come just shy of 4 years to the day since the last time he hosted “SNL” on Nov. 12, 2016. For those paying attention, the significance should be obvious: Chappell’s 2016 hosting gig, his first, was the first episode after Donald Trump won the presidential election via a narrow electoral college victory despite losing the popular vote by nearly 3 million.
That episode was notable for Chappelle’s monologue, which addressed the very real uncertainty millions of Americans were feeling in part by his saying “I’m gonna give him a chance,” but adding “and we the historically disenfranchised demand that he give us one too.” Presumably, Chappelle will refer back to that sentiment in his next monologue,...

Today happens to be the very last Saturday before election day 2020, so it’ll come as no surprise that “SNL” kicked off the 5th episode of Season 46 with a cold open full of jokes inspired by the final days of what has to be one of the most stressful elections in recent memory.
But it wasn’t the actual events of the week that was being parodied, it was that insane level of stress. Jim Carrey as Joe Biden read a parody of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” that was turned into a warning about the scary possibility that 2020 could still end up like 2016 — with a Trump victory despite polls — and a popular vote loss — that would in a sane country indicate otherwise.
Unlike previous weeks, Alec Baldwin didn’t return as Donald Trump. Instead, Carrey was joined by Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton, Mikey Day as Nate Silver,...

There are few horror blankets warmer to me than the Roger Corman Poe adaptations the director made with star Vincent Price in the 1960s. More than the familiarity of Hammer horror, more than the delicious junk food that is the slasher genre, the Corman/Poe cycle feels like October. Not even my beloved Universal Monsters offer the same amount of comfort, the same sense of seasonal mood. These are movies that I turn to every year to set the tone for October.
Because his name has become so synonymous with penny-pinching schlock—cheap movies shot on the quick, minimum investment for maximum return—it’s often overlooked that Roger Corman was a great director. For evidence of this, look no further than his Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, a series of eight films Corman made between 1960–1965, beginning with House of Usher and culminating with The Tomb of Ligeia. Though the films vary a little in quality,...

It took the Baltimore Ravens awhile to get in the game against the Houston Texans last night on Monday Night Football, but in the end they grinded out a 23-16 victory, keeping the Super Bowl Xlvii champs on track for their first playoff appearance in three years. However, now 12 weeks into the controversial season, it was only a dark victory for Espn and the NFL that one might detect in Edgar Allan Poe's “The Raven” poem. With a 6.0 in metered market results, last night's…...

Thq Nordic have released a new gameplay trailer for their series reboot Black Mirror, the Gothic horror adventure due for release on 28th November 2017. Developed by the Bremen studio King Art Games, known for The Book of Unwritten Tales, The Dwarves and The Raven, Black Mirror will be available on PC/Mac/Linux, PS4 and Xbox One.
The first part of the creepy point-and-click series was released in 2004 as The Black Mirror, which produced two more spin-offs, Black Mirror II (2009) and Black Mirror III (2011). But don’t worry, even players unfamiliar with the previous games in the series can also enjoy Black Mirror, because this reboot of the franchise tells a totally independent and new story. The major difference between the new and old Black Mirror, apart from the modern graphics of course, will be a new gameplay element: interaction with vision-like apparitions.

I have known for years, many people will not watch black and white movies, of any kind. It has to be color and no older than 10 years, preferably movies made this year, or last year. I have had people look at me with astonishment when I tell them I not only watch black and white movies regularly but even silent movies. I’ve had people admit they didn’t know movies were being made in 1927, much less 1915.
So for this Hallowe’en, when movie geeks thoughts turn to scary movies here is my personal and eclectic list of great, old, scary movies, filmed in glorious black and white.

It’s been the better part of a decade since “Buried,” “Devil,” and “Frozen” (the one about flesh-eating wolves, not the one about princesses) all hit theaters in the same year, and, for a moment there, it almost seemed as though the sub-genre those films share had started to lose its appeal. No such luck. Alas, we are still living in the golden age of single-location thrillers, even if most of them are bronze-level at best. If anything, Doug Liman’s passably entertaining new film suggests that we should brace ourselves for more such contained and claustrophobic exercises in suspense, whether we like them or not.
Arriving in theaters just a few weeks after the similarly scaled “Mine” was buried on VOD, “The Wall” may not be well-structured, but Liman’s latest still serves as an imposing reminder that — as movies get riskier to make and the gulf between blockbusters...

When Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla first joined YouTube, they each received a free iPod nano from the site for signing up. Over ten years later, and Smosh, the channel they named after a junior high inside joke, is the sixth most subscribed channel on YouTube — just after Rihanna’s Vevo, but before Taylor Swift’s.
When they arrived at the IndieWire offices last month to promote their second feature, “Ghostmates,” co-produced by Defy Media and YouTube Red, they each donned crisp black jackets and fresh haircuts. In the history of the horror genre, there has been no shortage of movies adapted from the great Edgar Allan Poe. From the classic 1935 Universal adaptation of “The Raven," to the brilliant gothic Roger Corman/Vincent Price collaborations of the 1960s, and even through Stuart Gordon’s 1991 filming of “The Pit and the Pendulum” for Full Moon Features, there’s not a corner of horror that hasn’t been touched by the works of Poe. This makes any new adaptation of the author’s work challenging, though, because so many horror fans may carry a “been there, seen that” mentality towards the umpteenth retelling of “The Tell-Tale Heart.” It is to the credit of directors Bart Mastronardi and Alan Rowe Kelly that their new anthology, aptly titled Tales of Poe, offers a new spin on an author whose work has been brought to the screen for nearly 100 years.

The news from Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, has lately turned to the political: Garrison Keillor, the humorist behind “A Prairie Home Companion,” brought his gentle comic style to bear on the campaign of Gop frontrunner Donald Trump. Keillor borrowed liberally from “The Raven,” Edgar Allan Poe‘s classic 1845 poem of dread and mystery, to tell his own story of the Trump campaign in the runup to the New York primary on Tuesday. 57 years ago today, Disney’s Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Fox Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles. It was the last film based on a fairy tale that the House of Mouse made for over 30 years, until 1989’s The Little Mermaid, since Sleeping Beauty underperformed at the box office, leading to massive layoffs at Disney. The successful release of 101 Dalmatians in 1961 ended up saving Disney Animation. Though Sleeping Beauty wasn’t a hit at its debut, the film’s become a beloved Disney classic, with Aurora in her pink dress (you win, Flora) prominent among the lineup of Disney princesses, and with Maleficent now an iconic animated villain. Maleficent got her own movie starring Angelina Jolie in 2014. Other notable January 29 happenings in pop culture history: • 1845: Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven was first published in the New York Evening Mirror. • 1942: BBC Radio first aired “Desert Island Discs.” Still on the air today,...

It’s one of those fears I never think about until someone brings it up - being buried alive. Just saying it makes my skin crawl, and not in a scary movie kind of way. Waking up in total darkness, unable to really move, hearing the sound of my heart beating wildly in my chest and this is before the true panic sets in. Check please, and bring the car around, won’t you? This is why I will be cremated, thanks (and save the comments about waking up engulfed in flames – it’ll be quicker, at least). Roger Corman’s Premature Burial (1962), based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, taps directly into this fear and mines that vein for 81 entertaining minutes.
Released in North America on March 7th by American International Pictures (there’s a story – more on that later), Premature Burial was the 3rd of Corman’s Poe adaptations,...

No other actor in the long history of horror has been so closely identified with the genre as Boris Karloff, yet he was as famous for his gentle heart and kindness as he was for his screen persona. William Henry Pratt was born on November 23, 1887, in Camberwell, London, England. He studied at London University in anticipation of a diplomatic career; however, he moved to Canada in 1909 and joined a theater company where he was bit by the acting bug. It was there that he adopted the stage name of “Boris Karloff.” He toured back and forth across the USA for over ten years in a variety of low-budget Theater shows and eventually ended up in Hollywood. A new TV documentary about iconic author Edgar Allan Poe aims to separate the man from the myth, but its producers must first deal with more pressing matters in the present day. As Halloween grows near, Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive is running out of time to raise the $75,000 it needs to cover post-production costs.
The project, which stars Denis O’Hare as the famed writer, launched a Kickstarter campaign earlier this month with a deadline of October 31 and has already raised more than $63,000. But with four days to go, producers are banking on Poe’s extensive fan base to help them reach their goal.
“We’re constantly amazed at Poe’s ubiquitous presence on the web,” said director Eric Stange in a press release. “His worldwide fan base is extremely wide and includes everyone from goths to steam punks to scholars. We’re hoping plenty of them will...

To say that Gotham Academy #7 feels a little disappointing would be completely unfair. That would imply that its quality is somehow deficient, and that is patently not the case. Just like the preceding issues of this series, it’s capital T.N. Top Notch. But the fact that it is so Top Notch leaves the fleeting aspects of the story — say like the presence of a certain major Bat-family character — feeling like they’re gone too soon. Basically, Gotham Academy #7 is like being given a slice of a magnificently delicious pie and having the rest taken away from you. It’s satisfying on its own, but you still have to wonder why it is you can’t have another.

Today is Vincent Price’s 104th Birthday! Price was born here in St. Louis on this date in 1911 and is the most iconic movie star to hail from our city. Price, who died October 25th 1993, was also a gourmand, author, stage actor, speaker, world-class art collector, raconteur, and all-around Renaissance man. Vincent Price was simply one of the most remarkable people of the 20th Century. Four years ago we had the opportunity to celebrate his 100th birthday and St. Louis was the place to do it. I teamed up with Cinema St. Louis to present Vincentennial, The Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, an event that lasted through much of the Spring of 2011. The following year Vincentennial won two coveted Rondo Awards, one for “Best Fan Event” and a second for myself as “Monster Kid of the Year” for directing the event. The Rondo Awards are prestigious Fan Awards given out...

Oh, to have been there at the drive-in in 1957 when this came out. Drive-ins were peaking in popularity, with over 4000 far and wide across North America providing countless hours of entertainment for youngsters, teenagers, and parents alike. However, if I was a little one and had seen this lurid and terrifying spectacle bleeding from the enormous outdoor screen, looming over the family car, I probably would have cried for my dad to rip off the attached speaker from the car window and make for the safety of home. And fast.
Released in the early summer of 1957, The Curse of Frankenstein was a huge hit worldwide, delighting audiences and – wait for it – appalling reviewers at the time. This isn’t much of a surprise. Curse is different from the Universal monster films of yore; even though it is set in the 1800’s, it has a direct, hip, and dare I say...

One of the most versatile and brilliant writers in history, Edgar Allan Poe was an American author who helped to influence scores of other literary greats.
Active during the 1840s and 1850s, Poe dabbled in mystery and detective writing, he helped to continue the emergence of the science-fiction genre of literature, and was part of the American Romantic Movement – even becoming the first well-known Us-born author to attempt to earn a living through his literary works alone.
Best known for his poems “The Raven”, “The Bells” and “Eldorado”, Poe also wrote several short stories, including “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, “The Gold-Bug” and “The Black Cat”.
Interestingly though, Poe also tried his hand at other forms of literature – writing one play (“Politian”) and one completed novel (“The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket”) during his lifetime.
But aside from his brilliant works, Poe’s life itself also makes for fascinating reading.

What will horror fans be watching this Christmas? Nick's got some ideas
The phrase “camp as Christmas” seems the only appropriate way to describe this month’s festive special as we take a look at the Blu-ray release of six Edgar Allan Poe adaptations combining the formidable talents of the great Vincent Price and the glorious “King of B-Movies”, Roger Corman.
Filmed relatively early in Corman’s incredibly prolific sixty-year career (over 400 movies produced, more than fifty films directed and he’s even starred in thirty-odd to boot!), this month’s Six Gothic Tales boxset covers all but one of his and Price’s early 60s Poe-themed Aip productions, from the morose The Fall Of The House Of Usher right through to 1964’s UK-based The Tomb Of Ligeia.
The first thing to note is the difficulty in believing the man responsible for Inhumanoid, Subliminal Seduction and the upcoming Sharktopus...

Christmas is almost here and Arrow Video have a present for horror fans (though you’ll have to buy it of course). Vincent Price in Six Gothic Tales is a box set of the Roger Corman Edgar Allan Poe films starring not only Price but some of the most iconic horror actors. Just mentioning the names Barbara Steele, Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney Jr., Boris Karloff and Basil Rathbone in the same review as Vincent Price should have you getting your money ready straight away…and let’s not forget a young Jack Nicholson making an appearance too. All this movie history in just one box, and that’s before we even look at the special features included for each movie.
Roger Corman’s Poe movies are strange beasts though, normally taking only the name and basic plot they sometimes have little connecting them to the actual source material, yet as fans we love them anyway.

In celebration of Sound on Sight’s 7th anniversary, writers were asked to come up with articles that present their childhood favorites in the realm of films, TV shows, books or games.
I chose films and anyone who has any familiarity with my writing knows I am virtually incapable of writing an article about a single film so I’m going to focus on a number of movies I saw in my youth.
Growing up in suburban Cincinnati, Ohio, I was fortunate enough to have my own room and my own TV set.
My family didn’t go out to the cinema very often so my introduction to movies was primarily through television.

Happy Holidays from The Stack! I'm kicking off this year's massive holiday gift guide with a look at every single Scream Factory 2014 release. But do not worry I've got a ton of fun box sets and Se's to make the Blu-ray DVD lover in you squeal. The nice thing about Scream Factory releases is that they make great little stockin' stuffers. First up is Dolls (1987) directed by Stuart Gordon. It's a marvelous little fairy tale with gore shocker accents. Squirm (1976) directed by Jeff Lieberman finally hits blu-ray with a bait load of extras. Really exciting is the blu-ray release of the Vincent Price Collection II which contains beautiful transfers of seven Price classics; The Raven (1963), Return of the Fly (1959), House on Haunted Hill (1959), Dr. Phibes Rises...

For Halloween, we celebrate The Simpsons' best Treehouse Of Horror stories, feat. zombies, Hitchcock and Kubrick spoofs and more...
“Nothing seems to bother my kids but tonight's show, which I totally wash my hands of, is really scary.”
For anyone who grew up watching The Simpsons, the Treehouse Of Horror Halloween specials are an annual horror staple, from spooky couch gag to horror-themed credits. You can learn an awful lot of things just from watching the show, but for younger audiences, these episodes gave us our introduction to certain iconic horror stories.
Having ditched the early framing device of the family telling scary stories to one another, with Springfielders cast in key roles, the format is now closer to a mini-anthology of terror with three stories that take place outside of canon. This has usually given the writers licence to be more gruesome and outlandish than in the regular series,...

The first Vincent Price collection from Scream Factory was a pure treasure. When October rolls around, almost nothing puts me in the Halloween mood like a constant stream of Vincent Price films on my TV. Never did I think that Scream could improve upon their original price collection, but when the films that would be included in this new set were announced, I was shocked. The first Vincent Price Collection has some really solid Price films, mostly of a Poe nature, and it was one of the most exciting releases of the year for fans of classic horror. The second set, drops the Poe theme(mostly), and includes some of Price’s most famous, well-regarded films, including a couple of my favorites. The list of films is impressive, and there are extras on most of the films. The packaging is consistent, and equally pleasing to the eyes. Scream Factory’s...

Update: The list has been amended to include the three segments from "Treehouse of Horror Xxv." That's right: In honor of The Simpsons' 25th (!) annual Halloween special, EW didn't just rank the top 25 "Treehouse of Horror" segments. We took things a step further by ranking every single "Treehouse" segment ever seen on the show—and you'll find entries 72 through 26 in the list below. Even when longtime fans sniff that The Simpsons' Golden Age is long past, they can agree that late-period Simpsons Halloween shows still pack a punch. Why? Because "Treehouse" segments give the series' writers a break...

One of my favorite horror movies of all time, and required Halloween viewing at my house, is 1959’s House on Haunted Hill, directed by William Castle and starring the legendary Vincent Price. As the tortured 19th century nobleman terrified that his catalepsy will lead to being buried alive, the morose Milland combines with the grim storyline to position this as Corman’s most morbid Poe film, unleavened by any glimmer of humor (which Price might have suggested with a slightly raised eyebrow). With its stately photography by Floyd Crosby and a wickedly seductive turn from ravishing Hazel Court, "Premature Burial" is nevertheless bleakly compelling… though you may want to revisit Price, Lorre and Karloff in "The Raven" as a quick pick-me-up after it’s over.
