Sony will be opening the Kendrick Brothers’ new documentary Show Me the Father on Sept. 10, while the studio has dated a 10th anniversary re-release of the filmmakers’ Courageous for Oct. 15. Show Me the Father explores the fatherhood of God.
“Everyone has a father story, but not everyone has learned how to redeem it for their own good and the good of others,” said executive producer Stephen Kendrick. “Even though fatherlessness is directly connected to so much brokenness in today’s world, we wanted to go beyond traditional documentaries and show how God is the perfect Father and can amazingly provide the love and healing to anyone at any stage in life.”
“In September 2011, Courageous was estimated to open at the box office with $1.5 million and it ended the weekend the #1 new movie, with $9.4 million in the first frame,” said Rich Peluso, EVP/Head of Affirm Films. “We are thrilled to...

Leave it to Pennywise to deliver a much-needed jolt to the domestic box office. Warner Bros. and New Line’s “It: Chapter Two” arrived with $91 million, a promising start to fall after a lackluster summer moviegoing season.
While those ticket sales are behind the jaw-dropping $123 million launch of its predecessor, 2017’s “It,” the follow-up still ranks as the second-best horror opening in history, as well as the second-highest bow for the month of September (both behind “It”). The original “It” stands as the most successful horror film to date with $700 million worldwide.
Directed by Andy Muschietti, “It: Chapter Two” was also a necessary win for Warner Bros. following a dismal summer that saw disappointments such as “The Kitchen,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Shaft.”
Overseas, “It: Chapter Two” scared up a solid $94 million for a global debut of $185 million.
“We’re absolutely thrilled with our result,” Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.

“Angel Has Fallen,” the third chapter in Lionsgate and Millenium’s action franchise starring Gerard Butler, had a stronger opening weekend than expected, collecting $21.25 million during its first three days of release.
Those ticket sales were enough to top domestic box office charts, bumping last weekend’s champ, Universal’s comedy “Good Boys,” to second place. Starring Jacob Tremblay, “Good Boys” generated $11.75 million in its sophomore outing, boosting its domestic total to $41.4 million.
“Angel Has Fallen” nearly matched the $21.6 million debut of its predecessor, 2016’s “London Has Fallen.” The first film, 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen,” kicked off with $30.4 million.
“We wanted to give enough distance from the big summer tentpole films,” Lionsgate’s president of domestic distribution David Spitz said of the movie’s late August release. “We had the opportunity, and the movie really delivered.”

Lionsgate and Millennium’s “Angel Has Fallen” is performing above expectations, taking in $7.9 million in Friday’s domestic ticket sales as it heads to a projected $20 million opening weekend.
Early estimates originally placed the third installment of the “Fallen” series within the $12 million to $16 million range, but a solid 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and some strong star power from leads Morgan Freeman and Gerard Butler appear to be bolstering its box office appearance.
Previous iterations within the franchise performed similarly, with 2016’s “London Has Fallen” opening to $21.6 million and 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen” nabbing a higher $30 million.
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, “Angel Has Fallen” follows secret service agent Mike Banning (Butler) who is falsely accused of an assassination attempt on U.S. President Allan Trumbull (Freeman). Also starring are Jada Pinkett Smith, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo and Nick Nolte.

Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman are leading the way at the North American box office with “Angel Has Fallen” on its way to about $20 million, early estimates showed Friday.
Should forecasts hold, “Angel Has Fallen” will take in about double the next title, Universal’s second weekend of raunchy comedy “Good Boys” with about $10 million. “Good Boys,” which appears to have broken the recent comedy slump at multiplexes, will wind up the weekend with more than $40 million in its first 10 days.
A quartet of titles will be battling for third place in the $7 million to $9 million range with the opening of Sony-Affirm’s faith-based “Overcomer” as the early leader, followed by Disney’s sixth weekend of “The Lion King” as it heads to $510 million, Universal’s fourth frame of “Hobbs & Shaw” and Fox Searchlight’s launch of horror-comedy “Ready or Not.”

Calling a faith-based release “preachy” could seem redundant, since these productions are designed as vehicles to evangelize. However, even within its spiritual niche, Alex Kendrick’s “Overcomer” shocks for being even more oppressively loquacious than some of its many big-screen cousins.
If every line of stale dialogue landed like a hammer to the head, audiences would walk out victims of blunt-force trauma.
Kendrick, who co-wrote this with brother and perennial collaborator Stephen Kendrick, directs himself as John Harrison, a beloved basketball coach and history teacher at a Christian high school in small-town America. Life’s idyllic until his self-image crumbles after the local plant closes, forcing thousands of blue-collar workers to move elsewhere with their families. Lacking players, John is reassigned to coach the cross-country team, composed of one athlete with asthma: orphaned African American teen Hannah Scott (newcomer Aryn Wright-Thompson).

“Angel Has Fallen,” the action sequel starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, earned $1.5 million at the box office Thursday from preview screenings at 2,600 locations. It opens on 3,286 screens this weekend.
Lionsgate is releasing “Angel Has Fallen” following up from the success of both “Olympus Has Fallen” in 2013 and “London Has Fallen” in 2016. It’s the widest release this weekend as the summer comes to a close, with Fox Searchlight’s horror and thriller “Ready or Not” having already opened on Wednesday.
The studio is projecting “Angel” to open in the low to mid teen range this weekend, with independent trackers estimating approximately $13 million. For a comparison, “London Has Fallen” earned only $850,000 in its debut opposite a then record-setting weekend for Disney’s “Zootopia,” but it ultimately raked in a $21.6 million opening. The original “Olympus Has Fallen” opened to $30.3 million and grossed $170.2 million worldwide.

No matter the setting or circumstances, the solution to every dilemma found in Christian Evangelical films is getting closer to God. That certainly holds true with regards to “Overcomer,” the latest bit of bigscreen proselytizing by writer-director-star Alex Kendrick. The story of a high school basketball coach who’s forced to take over a cross-country program with only one runner, it’s Its one-note sermonizing should help it appeal to its target audience, but those not already in the fold will likely be left unmoved.
When economic hard times hit his small-town community, compelling many of his star athletes to relocate, coach John Harrison (Kendrick) watches his expectations for a winning basketball season go down the drain. To add insult to injury, he’s ordered by Principal Brooks (Priscilla Shirer) to take over the cross-country squad — an unwanted assignment made more difficult by the fact that only asthmatic new student...

Three more contenders are joining what has lately been a hostile box office arena. Can anyone emerge from August victorious?
Fox Searchlight’s “Ready or Not,” a black comedy about a diabolical game of hide-and-seek, will debut in 2,244 North American theaters on Wednesday. The low-budget film is expected to earn upwards of $6.5 million over the weekend and $8 million to $12 million during its first five days of release. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, “Ready or Not” stars Samara Weaving as a newlywed who finds out her in-laws intend to stalk and kill her. It's pretty rare for a movie to rise from second place to first at the box office in its second week of release. It's pretty rare for such a movie to defeat a summer smash that's topped the chart for three weeks running. And it's pretty rare for a low-budget, Christian-themed movie with a star-free cast to become the top-grossing film in North America.
And yet, "War Room" did all three of those things this week. After last weekend's impressive $11.4 million debut in the No. 2 slot, the film rose to the top spot this weekend with an estimated $9.4 million from Friday to Sunday (and a projected $12.3 million over the four-day holiday weekend). It dethroned previous three-time champ "Straight Outta Compton" (No. 2, with an estimated $8.9 million from Friday to Sunday and $11.2 million over the Labor Day holiday). War Room is experiencing an unprecedented amount of success. The faith-based film from director Alex Kendrick came in second place at the box office this weekend just under Straight Outta Compton. It earned a whopping $11 million in revenue, even though it opened in a mere 1,135 locations. In another turn of events, War Room earned an A+ from CinemaScore, making the first film to receive such a rating since American Sniper earlier this year. This achievement is pretty remarkable, yet unexpected. War Room was universally bashed by critics, who collectively gave the film an 18% rotten rating on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. But, according to Kendrick, he takes these criticisms with a smile and attributes the film.s success to his dedicated, faithful audience. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about this success from left field, he said: Some of our critics, especially the secular critics, will accuse us of...

It was the lowest grossing weekend at the box office so far in 2015, but Universal still had a reason to celebrate. For the third straight week, their breakout hip hop biopic "Straight Outta Compton" topped the box office with $13.2 million. This marks the third movie this year for Universal that has spent three straight weeks in the number one spot: the others were "Furious 7" and "Jurassic World." While 'Compton' is unlikely to cross the billion dollar barrier like those films, with $134 million domestic and counting, the movie is going to make a nice healthy profit and then some. This weekend however, the foul-mouthed, R-rated 'Compton' had some competition from a family-friendly, God-fearing drama. The early tracking suggested "War Room" might surprise, and indeed it did. The faith-based film, playing on two thousand fewer screens than 'Compton,' managed a very impressive $11 million. The latest from Alex Kendrick, who previously helmed.

A new arrival proved to be a surprise challenger, but F. Gary Gray's "Straight Outta Compton" was still the no. 1 movie in America when all was said and done. That makes it three straight weekend for the Universal Studios hit which took in another $13.2 million for an impressive $134.1 million in just 17 days. It also has an excellent shot to remain in the top spot over the upcoming Labor Day weekend with "The Transporter Refueled" and "A Walk in the Woods" as the only new releases hitting theaters. Faith based drama "War Room" might have come in second after actually beating "Straight" on Friday, but it's still a major win for filmmaker Alex Kendrick and TriStar, the Sony Pictures division that released it. "War Room" earned $11 million over the three-day which beats the opening of Kendrick's last film, 2011's "Courageous." That sleeper hit ended up with $34 million overall on a production budget of just $2 million.

With $13.2M in domestic box office Universal's Straight Outta Compton held off the upstart War Room to claim the #1 position on the charts for the third weekend in a row. War Room, which beat Compton in theaters on Friday, made $11M with a robust $9,692 per screen average. The top of the heap was still a pretty low heap, however, as the top 12 made $68.8M, off 22% from last year's $88.2M, which was a weak weekend itself. That $68.8M also gives this frame the dubious distinction of being the lowest grossing weekend of the year, 12% lower than March 6 - 8th's $78.3M. The newcomers that helped achieve that feat included No Escape, the Owen Wilson/Pierce Brosnan military coup flick, which the Weinsteins state came in just a little under their $9M estimate with $8.3M. On 2,470 screens that $3,355 psa is better than the $2,850 that last year's late-August Pierce Brosnan movie offering, The November Man,...

'War Room' movie: The Power of Prayer. The Power of Prayer at the domestic box office: 'War Room' (sort of) beats 'Straight Outta Compton' A miracle was needed for any of this weekend's new entries to beat the sleeper hit of 2015, F. Gary Gray's Straight Outta Compton, at the North American box office. As long as studio estimates are on target, that miracle has (sort of) happened. Praise the Power of Prayer and the Power of Expert Targeted Marketing. “If you haven't started already, pray for this movie,” urges an Evangelical Christian website featuring a War Room promotional giveaway, “that the Holy Spirit would be in abundance at each showing of the film, that hearts would be impressed to pray more than ever and that revival will happen as a result!” Directed by Alex Kendrick and co-written by Kendrick and his brother, Stephen Kendrick, the Power of...

Another faith based movie came out of "nowhere" to shock Hollywood at the box office on Friday. That's narrative you'll see in most stories about "War Room's" performance, but it may be more about the entertainment media ignoring the consistent performances of faith based movies more than anything else. "War Room," which was distributed by Sony Pictures division TriStar Pictures, took in $3.875 million on its first day to knock "Straight Outta Compton" from the top spot for the first time in 15 days. "Room" was directed and co-written by Alex Kendrick whose last two films, "Courageous" and "Fireproof," each earned over $33 million during their theatrical runs. Moreover, "Room" looks like it will slightly exceed the $9.1 million "Courageous" earned over its first three days in 2011. As with all of Kendrick's productions, the marketing is aimed at churches and religious groups on a grass roots level which flows under the radar for those covering the biz.

'Straight Outta Compton' poster. Weekend box office: 'Straight Outta Compton' to beat weak competitors, but still far from being top blockbuster directed by black filmmaker If you thought last weekend was bad at the U.S. and Canada box office, you should see what's in store for this weekend, Aug. 28-30, '15. For starters, only one movie, F. Gary Gray's sleeper hit Straight Outta Compton, is expected to earn more than $10 million. The rest – and that includes Zac Efron, Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan, and the Power of (Christian) Prayer – will perform quite powerlessly indeed. In case Straight Outta Compton reaches the box office gurus' estimated $15 million, it will get close to the $140 million mark. Bear in mind there's no guarantee that will happen; despite basically no competition, the drop-off rate of Gray's hip hopping film was steeper than expected last weekend. (See updated weekend box office estimates.) Now, some...

Newcomers this weekend are performing as expected in what is anticipated to be a weak, end-of-summer three-day. Three new films are competing for moviegoers in the final weekend before Labor Day, and the faith-based War Room from Fireproof director Alex Kendrick is leading the new entries so far to pull in (as it looks now) around $3.6M or so today after grabbing $600K from over 1,000 theaters last night. Not surprising as it is a PG player, but the R-rated audience for…...

Forecast Update: Looks like that headline, "'Compton' Three-peats," should have had a question mark behind it. Sony is reporting that War Room, the faith-based film from the Kendrick brothers, made $3.87M in Friday receipts while Universal reports that Straight Outta Compton made $3.83M. It may not be enough to take the weekend though as Sony is also projecting that War Room makes $10 - $10.5M by Sunday night. Universal places Compton at $12.3M. War Room's per screen average for Friday was $3,414 on 1,135 screens. That's close to the psa that Freestyle Releasing's Christian-themed God's Not Dead made last year in March when its Friday hit $2.8M on 780 screens, an average of $3,592 per. God's Not Dead, which ended the weekend with $9.2M and an eventual $60.8M domestic cume, opened in 4th on the charts but was in a much more crowded and competitive frame. Divergent, for example, was #1 with $54.6M that weekend.

Kirk Cameron, Left Behind Kirk Cameron: Gays 'Unnatural' – Plus Cameron's Banana Video As for Kirk Cameron, he hasn't had a very fruitful film career, as the vast majority of his work has been restricted to television. During his Growing Pains heyday in the '80s, Cameron was seen in only a handful of mainstream releases, all but one box-office bombs — e.g., Douglas Day Stewart's romantic drama Listen to Me (1989), opposite Jami Gertz, and the Robin Williams-Kurt Russell comedy The Best of Times (1986). The second phase of Cameron's film career is comprised of a few movies geared to Evangelical Christian audiences in the United States. In Vic Sarin's Armaggedon-themed Left Behind (2001), Cameron plays television journalist Buck Williams, described by the New York Times' Stephen Holden as "the most golly gee-whiz young journalist to appear since Jimmy Olsen stalked Superman." For all his naiveté, Williams uncovers...

From the cast, you’d think it was an Oscar contender. There’s Melissa Leo, who took home an Academy Award last year for portraying the brash, hair-sprayed matriarch in “The Fighter.” And then there’s Robert Duvall.
“Mr. Duvall,” Leo says with a schoolgirl sigh, is the reason she joined the Christian film “Seven Days in Utopia.”
The story follows a fledgling pro-golfer played by Lucas Black (the wide-eyed lead from “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift”), who, after a very bad couple of holes, contemplates leaving the sport forever. Leo is a buttoned-up widow with limited screen time, and Duvall plays the pious sage with slightly sordid past.
“They didn’t know which way they wanted to go with this film,” Duvall said. “I said, ‘There’s only one Jesus Christ, [so] give me some faults, give me some obstacles.’ "
Duvall pushed the writers to add in his character’s past faults.
