It would be slightly unfair to prattle on about Life Partners (2014) in the context of gay/lesbian films. First and foremost, it's a comedy and the lesbianism of one of the characters is, in some ways, incidental and mostly uncontroversial. That is to say, there's no struggle with sexual identity or coming of age or dark psycho-sexual elements to the film that dominate most of its consœurs. That said, it does have a scene where they play a game called "How many lesbians can you fit in a Subaru?" so I think we can say this is a lesbian film. If director Susanna Fogel and her writing partner Joni Lefkowitz can ironically bring up stereotypes, then I can point out that they do a grand job of undermining the stultifying stereotype that lesbians (and films about them) can only be solemn or tokens. Life Partners is well-rounded,...

Title: Life Partners Director: Susanna Fogel Starring: Leighton Meester, Gillian Jacobs and Adam Brody The closest and truest childhood friends often find a way to maintain their relationships, despite the peer pressure and struggles they often face together in school. Learning to contend with those personal challenges in their relationships at a young age can also teach them how to overcome the perplexing adversities they face throughout their 20s, as they search for professional and romantic fulfillment together. First-time feature film director Susanna Fogel reteamed with Joni Lefkowitz, her co-star, scribe and producer from their television series, ‘Joni & Susanna,’ to comically write about those struggles in their new independent [ Read More ]

Magnolia Pictures released their new comedy film, "Life Partners," into theaters today, and we got some reviews in from the top, major critics. It turns out that the overall view is mixed as it got an overall 56 score out of a possible 100 across 13 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Adam Brody, Leighton Meester, Gillian Jacobs, Gabourey Sidibe and Kate McKinnon. We've posted blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. Claudia Puig from USA Today, gave it a fairly nice 75 score, saying: "Partners is exceedingly well-cast and well-acted, bringing a lightly satirical and witty script to life. Meester and Jacobs have a disarming chemistry, and their conversation is filled with a comfortable shorthand." Sara Stewart over at the New York Post, gave it a 75 grade as well, stating: "Fogel’s focus is female friendship, and the challenges presented by growing older and pairing up. It all makes for a rocky road,...

"Life Partners" is a new comedy co-written by Joni Lefkowitz and co-written and directed by Susanna Fogel. It stars Gillian Jacobs and Leighton Meester as Paige and Sasha, two best friends, the former of which is straight and the latter gay. They are as close as can be until Paige meets Adam Brody's character Tim and falls in love with him. This challenges her relationship with Sasha, who is single and not ready to give up all of the time she spends with her pal.
The film is semi autobiographical, as the writers have a similar longtime friendship with each other. Susanna Fogel, in her feature directorial debut, gets a lot of great performances out of the talented cast. The two female leads shine in their roles, funny and human, not over the top caricatures that you might get with a studio comedy. Adam Brody is quite charming as Paige's newfound beau,...

Following the success of last year’s Dallas Buyers Club, director Jean-Marc Vallée returns with another high profile title and a big Hollywood star that should easily be this week’s Specialty Box Office go-getter, Wild. Starring Reese Witherspoon, who also produces with Bruna Papandrea under their Pacific Standard label, the Fox Searchlight title will open in a comparatively wider release by this weekend (it opened in NY and La Wednesday) than some of its more recent high-profile brethren including last week’s The Imitation Game or last month’s Foxcatcher. Liv Ullmann returns to the director’s chair after a long absence with her take on Strindberg’s Miss Julie with Jessica Chastain, Collin Farrell and Samantha Morton via Wrekin Hill Entertainment. IFC Films and Magnolia Pictures will each open features Comet and Life Partners respectively which have at their center two people in an intense relationship. And two...

She’s the One: Fogel’s Debut a Top Tier Examination of Co-Dependent Friendship
Borrowing shades of autobiographical instances from their own lives, director Susanna Fogel and co-writer Joni Lefkowitz’s feature film debut, Life Partners, transcends the corral of niche markets and anchoring labels with its enthusiastic relatability as one of the most realistic examples of life’s circumstances forcing friends (a little bit) apart. Devoid of soapboxing subtexts or proselytizing with political agendas, Lefkowitz’s tender, sharply observed script gets fleshed out by a handful of genuinely engaging performances from both leads and supporting players. Familiar themes are presented refreshingly as Fogel expertly guides the film through the precarious catwalk of striking just the right balance between light drama and inventive comedy, inviting us to laugh at and with a strikingly composed cast of rich characters.

Movies about friendships being tested by new romantic interests are nothing new, but Life Partners just about manages not to let that familiarity grate. Credit writer-director Susanna Fogel and her co-writer Joni Lefkowitz, who punch up a rather commonplace premise with honest scripting and a warm sense of humor. Their unidealized depiction of the relationship between long-time friends Sasha (Leighton Meester) and Paige (Gillian Jacobs), is interesting to watch, and that realism also helps Life Partners to navigate some trickier, though no less conventional, narrative territory in its latter half.
In terms of plot, what’s on offer is undeniably standard. Sasha and Paige are close friends of the nail-painting, bed-sharing variety, who have their relationship altered and in some ways threatened by Paige’s blossoming romance with Tim (Adam Brody), a badly dressed but incessantly charming guy who quickly wins Paige over. As much as they have in common,...

"I hate everyone but you." While the fall and winter are usually reserved for awards season contenders and big studio films looking for a holiday audience, there are still some festival indies trickling into theaters as well. Life Partners
Written by Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz
Directed by Susanna Fogel
USA, 2014
You’ve seen Life Partners before. While it isn’t always a bad thing that the late-20-something romantic comedy narrative seems overly familiar, its tropes eventually detract.
Sasha (Leighton Meester) and Paige (Gillian Jacobs) are best friends. Sasha is gay, Paige is straight. They call each other husband and wife, never miss America’s Next Top Model, and bemoan their respective dating woes regularly. When Paige starts dating Tim (Adam Brody), one newfound relation threatens to tear the old one apart.
Writers Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz have a funny script filled with great one-liners, and hilarious observations (of, particularly, slogan T-shirts). Supporting actor Beth Dover, as Jenn, the lesbian who thinks everything is funny even when it’s really, really not, and Kate McKinnon in an all-too-brief cameo as an egotistical star of To...

Life Partners, starring Leighton Meester, Gillian Jacobs and Adam Brody, brings a story of female friendship to Tribeca, premiering Friday, April 18.
Life Partners tells the story of Sasha (Meester) and Paige (Jacobs), as their friendship begins to change when Paige falls in love with Tim (Brody). Sasha and Paige are completely co-dependent, and Sasha worries she will be left behind as her friend embarks on a serious relationship. Unlike other, more stereotypical films sharing this plot line, Life Partners is not about two best friends fighting over a boy – Sasha is gay – and Meester assures audiences that it doesn’t focus on Sasha’s sexuality either.
“I see very few female roles that come my way that are strong, defined, or independent of male storylines. This movie is about women and their friendship, lives, and careers – things that interest them other than dating, guys, love and sex. My character is...

When Leighton Meester signed on to the Bff dramedy Life Partners, she never imagined she’d try something Blair Waldorf would never even consider: going off script.

Political inequality has long been an issue of protest among the Lgbt community, but writer/director Susanna Fogel admits that progress has certainly been made in recent years. Her recent film "Life Partners," which tackles the relationship between a gay woman and a straight woman whose friendship is tested when a man comes into the picture, aims to allude to the ever-turning wheel of social development. Tell us about yourself. I'm a writer-director originally from Rhode Island, now living in Los Angeles. I've spent the past eleven years working with a writing partner, Joni Lefkowitz, and am now making the transition into feature directing thanks to this script we wrote together and our incredible producer Jordana Mollick. I realize that question was about me but I have to start by crediting my two collaborators who aided and abetted me taking this leap. What was your biggest challenge in completing this project?...

After lengthy deal-making process, ABC Family has given a series order to drama Chasing Life (formerly Terminales) for a launch in early 2014. Chasing Life, which I hear has received a 13-episode pickup, joins new ABC Family drama series The Fosters and Twisted, meaning all three ABC Family pilots from the most recent cycle went to series. (The network passed on its comedy pilots, Phys Ed and Continuing Fred.) Chasing Life is an adaptation of the successful Televisa Spanish-language Mexican television series. The pilot was produced by Lionsgate in association with Televisa. As part of the series pickup, ABC Family and its in-house production arm Bv Family Prods have come on board as co-producers. Kapital Entertainment’s Aaron Kaplan (The Neighbors), who has shepherded the project for the past two years, is executive producing alongside writers Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz, who joined last year and whose script was greenlighted to pilot.

Related: ABC Family To Order Drama Pilot ‘Terminales’, Two Comedy Pilots ABC Family has made its pilot orders, greenlighting drama Terminales and comedies Phys Ed and Continuing Fred. The three pilots will go into production this fall along with the previously announced drama pilots The Fosters (working title), executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, and Socio. “These pilots will further our strength in both the drama and comedy areas,” said ABC Family Evp Kate Juergens, noting that the network is looking to extend its streak of launching a top-rated new series in the young demos every summer, something it has done in the past three years with Pretty Little Liars (2010), Switched at Birth (2011) and Baby Daddy (2012). Here are the new pilots’ official descriptions: Terminales is a one-hour drama based on a successful Mexican television format by Miguel Angel Fox and follows a young woman’s life after she is diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Exclusive: I’ve learned that ABC Family is finalizing deals for three pilot orders — to drama Terminales and comedies Phys Ed and Continuing Fred. They will join the network’s recently picked up drama pilots: multi-ethnic family show The Fosters, executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, and Socio, about a teen psychopath. Described as “Sex And The City if Carrie Bradshaw was dying of cancer,” Terminales follows a young woman’s life after she is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Lionsgate TV and Kapital Entertainment are producing; Aaron Kaplan is executive producing; Paul Presburger is overseeing for Televisa, which owns the format. ABC Family originally put the project in development in August 2011. Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz, creators of the HBO comedy pilot Washingtonienne, have come on board to write an adaptation of the Mexican drama series Terminales for ABC Family. The hire seems appropriate as Terminales is sometimes described as “Sex and the City‘if Carrie Bradshaw was dying of cancer” and Sarah Jessica Parker, who played Bradshaw on the hit HBO comedy, developed and executive produced Washingtonienne. Created and produced by Miguel Angel Fox, Terminales chronicles the life of young and successful publicist April Marquez who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Fogel and Lefkowitz replace Del Shores who was originally tapped to write the project. Lionsgate TV and Kapital Entertainment are producing Terminales. Aaron Kaplan is executive producing; Paul Presburger is overseeing for Televisa which owns the format.

Leslie Mann and Elizabeth Banks are set to star in the comedy What Was I Thinking? for New line, report the trades. The flick is based on the book of the same name by Barbara Davilman and Liz Dubelman and compiles 58 bad boyfriend stories. The film version sees a woman getting dumped during her engagement party, causing her friends to spring into action and whisk her away on a ski trip for healing and hedonism. Mann would play a woman who dates a lot but never seems to have serious relationships, while Banks is a woman on the rebound. Two other lead female parts are called for. New Line has picked up "What Was I Thinking?" a comedy project from Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz with Leslie Mann and Elizabeth Banks attached to star. Lynda Obst is producing.
The project is based on a book of the same name which saw Barbara Davilman and Liz Dubelman compile 58 bad boyfriend stories. Obst saw the book and realized it would make a great hook for a movie. She then enlisted Fogel and Lefkowitz, who wrote the Sarah Jessica Parker HBO pilot "The Washingtonienne," to come up with a movie story.

Suddenly TheWB is not just for teens anymore. TheWB.com has launched a much more adult slate of programming this winter, and so far the more adult-geared humor has delivered. Earlier this week the holiday treats came early with the all-at-once launch of Rob Coddry's Childrens' Hospital. But you might have missed Joni and Susanna, an equally delightful present with all six episodes dished out this week. The semi-scripted web series was created by Joni Lefkowitz, and Susanna Fogel who met in a Second City La sketch comedy class six years ago. After putting a number of low-fi videos up on Joni's YouTube channel, it wasn't long before they found themselves with a deal from Warner Bros. There's no doubting there are few topics that are taboo for Joni and Susanna, which help makes their web series a joyous, uncensored romp. Kudos to TheWB for introducing a show with noticeable...

With a new web series, a pilot for HBO in post production, and a "Reality Bites for the MySpace generation" project in development, out writer-actor Joni Lefkowitz is one of the women to watch in 2009.
Lefkowitz and her writing partner and co-star, Susanna Fogel, first gained notoriety with their wry YouTube videos in which they filmed themselves looking for parking, going for fast food, and complaining about the early picket line hours during the WGA writers' strike.
Less than a year later, Lefkowitz and Fogel came up with the eponymous series, Joni & Susanna which is now a part of the original programming line up on TheWB.com, Warner Bros' video-on-demand website.
Lefkowitz talked to AfterEllen recently about her new show and its depiction of the darker side of women's friendships; lesbian films; and why being gay isn't interesting enough to be the focus of her work.
