CBS' "Family Affair" wasn't the biggest sitcom of its era, nor was it the most groundbreaking, but it popularized a found-family formula that would endure for decades after its original run. The series followed a lifelong bachelor, Bill (Brian Keith), whose lifestyle is interrupted by the sudden arrival of his three orphaned nieces and nephews. Clueless about parenthood yet suddenly the dad of three grieving kids, Bill recruited the help of several other characters throughout the series — most notably, his loyal British manservant, French (Sebastian Cabot).
"Family Affair" ran for five seasons on CBS beginning in 1966, and though it doesn't appear in syndication as often as other shows from its era, the series is still fondly remembered by those who saw it. Unfortunately, the show is also remembered for the unusual amount of tragedy that befell its stars. Child star Anissa Jones died of an overdose just five years after the show ended,...

"A Time For Killing" (also called "The Long Ride Home") isn't one of the best Westerns of all time, nor is it the most memorable, but the 1967 film still comes up in conversation thanks to its unique status as the very first movie role Harrison Ford was ever credited in. Ford played a young, sideburn-wearing Union soldier in the film, which followed the exploits of a group of captured Confederate soldiers on a mad dash for Mexico — none of whom realize the war has officially ended.
Aside from Ford's debut as Lieutenant Shaffer (for which he was credited as Harrison J. Ford), "A Time For Killing" is most noteworthy for its status as an abandoned Roger Corman flick. Corman started making "A Time For Killing" after already churning out cult classics like "A Bucket of Blood" and "The Little Shop of Horrors," but the low-budget filmmaker was replaced by "99 River Street...

After Lucille Ball's spunky housewife Lucy signed off on the last episode of "I Love Lucy" but before Mary Tyler Moore did away with the nuclear family sitcom model with her own self-titled show, another actress was one of the faces of womanhood in comedy. Oscar-winning actress Donna Reed headlined "The Donna Reed Show" from 1958 to 1966, playing middle-class mother and housewife Donna Stone in the popular black-and-white series. Reed starred opposite Carl Betz, who played Donna's husband, pediatrician Dr. Alex Stone. In season 5, family friends Midge and Dave joined the fun, but for the most part, the show was all about the lighthearted hijinks of the Stone family.
Though "The Donna Reed Show" was popular upon release, it's now perhaps most often referenced as a pop cultural window into a time before second-wave feminism, when women were expected to spend their time cooking, cleaning, and child-rearing while men went to work.

"Maybe you share the same feelings about me that I do about you?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled A Chance Encounter, made by Alexander Jeffery. This will be out in theaters and on VOD at the end of October. In the coastal town of Taormina, Sicily an aspiring poet in search of inspiration meets a folk singer trying to write a follow up to her breakout hit. "Their instant chemistry sparks collaboration, leading to an unexpected, weeklong writer's retreat at a beautiful villa in the Sicilian countryside." It looks like a very lovely, heartfelt musical reminiscent of Before Sunrise meets Once - two of the best romance films ever made. Starring Andrea von Kampen and Paul Peterson. This looks fantastic!! I'm not sure how this skipped festivals and is getting a quiet release in the fall, because it seems absolutely adorable in so many different ways.

Lee Aaker, best known as the 1950s child star of The Adventures of Rin-Tin-Tin, has died at 77. The news comes via a social media post by former child actor and activist Paul Petersen. Petersen said Aaker “passed away in Arizona on April 1st, alone & unclaimed, listed as an ‘indigent decedent.'”

Aaker’s career began propitiously. Even before Rin Tin Tin, at the age of 8 he had uncredited appearances in films such as The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) and High Noon (1952). Aaker then appeared opposite Barbara Stanwyck...

Lee Aaker, who starred in the ABC series “The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin,” died this month near Mesa, Arizona of a stroke, according to a Facebook post from fellow former child actor Paul Petersen. He was 77.
Petersen confirmed Aaker’s passing to TheWrap and said that no service was currently planned.
Born in Inglewood, California, in 1943, Aaker was first found by director Fred Zinnemann and cast for his short film “Benjy,” which was commissioned as a fundraiser video by Los Angeles Orthopedic Hospital and featured Aaker as a boy with scoliosis who is offered the chance to undergo a medical procedure that could cure him, but must first get permission from his parents whom have rejected him because of his condition. Despite being based on dramatized scenes, it qualified for the Best Documentary Short category at the Oscars and won in 1951.

On a snowy afternoon in 1958, Annette Funicello, Tommy Cole, and several other The Mickey Mouse Club members were on an East Coast bus tour when they gave one unsuspecting family a huge surprise. "The new Annette series was coming on the air and we wanted to see it," Tommy exclusively recalls to Closer Weekly of the sitcom in which Annette played a rural girl who moves in with rich relatives. "Our bus driver went up to a house that had bikes on the porch — we knew there were kids. He knocked and said, 'I have some of the original Mouseketeers on my bus — can we come in and watch Annette with you?' And they went, 'Oh my!'" By the third season of The Mickey Mouse Club, Annette had become the most beloved girl in America. The Mickey Mouse Club cast. Hollywood has seen many child actors crash and burn after finding stardom early in their lives on a television network or in films; you can probably list five off the top of your head. But for those who intimately understand their plight, it’s an uphill battle needing constant consideration. Enter A Minor Consideration, the nonprofit organization and advocacy group based in Gardena, Calif., that’s dedicated to supporting present, former, and future kid actors. “The fundamental element of our group, which now numbers about 800 former kid stars, is taking care of our own,” said president and former Mouseketeer Paul Petersen (“The Donna Reed Show”). “We intervene when necessary. We provide emotional support if necessary. We’ll find a lawyer or a veterinarian, but most of all, we cling to each other because it’s like a brotherhood, a sisterhood.” In addition to providing myriad support over the years, AMC...

It's been a tough year for some kids on reality shows.
From Here Comes Honey Boo Boo to Friday Night Tykes to the kids of Real Housewives with parents getting divorced or going to jail, it could be hard to understand why a parent would want to broadcast their child’s development for all the world to see -- even if they’re able to pay for college down the road with talent fees.
Child advocates who we spoke to said that there aren't enough regulations, especially for shows shot outside California, to protect kids from being overworked and exploited. Unlike the push for a "no kids" policy in paparazzi photos -- which was supported by Kristen Bell and other celebrity parents -- there’s been no coordinated campaign focused on kids on reality shows.

DreamWorks Animation started out the year with a home run with The Croods, and will have to work harder to turn their latest, Turbo, into a success. But with three films due out next year, kicking off with Mr. Peabody & Sherman, things continue to look good for one of the industry’s leading animation houses.
Based on the titular characters from the 1960s animated series, The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, the Spring ’14 blockbuster sees The Lion King co-director Rob Minkoff return behind the camera for his first animated movie since 2003’s The Haunted Mansion.
And with little more than half a year left on the calendar, DreamWorks and Fox have released the first official teaser poster, via Sky Movies, giving us a little look at the eponymous characters.

Are we really surprised to hear that the world's biggest teenage pop star is acting out? Actually, yes we are surprised, since that pop star is Justin Bieber, who has a pretty squeaky clean reputation.
Sources tell the New York Daily News that the 18-year-old's record label, Def Jam Records, is fed up with the star's "bratty antics," which may be jeopardizing his career. Insiders say Bieber's team has tried to address his behavioral problems, but claims, "Justin doesn’t seem to care and does whatever he wants, but he doesn't listen to anyone."
Another insider told the Nydn, that Bieber has allegedly taken up a new hobby that his management team isn't fond of either:
“He smokes weed all day, from the time he gets up, and orders everybody around. He’s surrounded by hangers-on who say ‘yes’ to anything he wants. There’s no supervision," the source told the paper.

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

On September 16, just hours after 26-year-old actress Amanda Bynes was stopped by police and cited for driving on a suspended license (her 6th incident of reckless driving in five months), fellow former child-star-turned-road-menace Lindsay Lohan decided she’d seen enough.
“Why did I get put in jail and a nickelodeon star has had No punishment(s) so far?” Lohan complained to her 4.3 million fans via Twitter.
Bynes and Lohan are products of the two largest child-star factories in America. Bynes made her name on Nickelodeon, getting her start on the variety show "All That," eventually earning top billing on her own series, "The Amanda Show," which ran from 1999 to 2002. Lohan is a Disney creation, with film credits ranging from 1998’s "The Parent Trap" to 2005’s "Herbie: Fully Reloaded."

Though we're used to seeing Stephen Colbert wielding the weapon of satire on Comedy Central, sometimes the actor has time for a few other film and TV roles. Though he's made some brief live-action appearances in films like Bewitched and The Love Guru, it's his voiceover work in animated projects that's more impressive and consistent. From "The Venture Bros." to Monsters vs. Aliens, Colbert's voice is like magic, and we're going to hear it on the big screen again as THR reports he'll be lending his voice to Mr. Peabody and Sherman, the DreamWorks Animation adaptation of the "Rocky & Bullwinkle" cartoon. Quiet you! Casting is far from stuck in the past for DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming big screen adaptation of the classic cartoon Mr. Peabody & Sherman. Today, the production has added two more names to the mix: political satirist Stephen Colbert and comedienne and The West Wing star Allison Janney.

Considering how much time Stephen Colbert spends trying to protect democracy from the sinister forces of democracy, you wouldn't think he'd have time to do much else.
Luckily, the self-proclaimed defender of liberty is also good at multi-tasking, which is how The Hollywood Reporter is able to report today that the star of "The Colbert Report" has just signed on to provide one of the voices in the upcoming animated feature "Mr. Peabody & Sherman."
The Wabac Machine, in the hands of Colbert? America really is in trouble good hands now.
A quick refresher on "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" for those of you who missed out on pop culture of the late 1950s: One of the most enduring segments of the classic cartoon "The Bullwinkle Show," "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" is about a genius dog (that's Mr. Peabody) who travels through time with his pet boy (Sherman, naturally) using the Wabac Machine.

Stephen Colbert, Allison Janney, Ellie Kemper, Ariel Winter and Stephen Tobolowsky have signed on for Rob Minkoff's "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" at DreamWorks Animation says THR.
Based on the iconic cartoon series, Ty Burrell plays Mr. Peabody, the world's smartest being (and a dog). When he and his "pet" boy Sherman (Max Charles) use their time-traveling machine without permission, events in history spiral out of control and it is up to the duo to put things back on track.

Dwa has also moved up the feature by several months - from March 14th 2014 to November 8th 2013, swapping places with "Me & My Shadow".

Update: Mr. Peabody and Sherman truly are becoming a modern family! "Modern Family" star Ariel Winter ("Alex") is joining her TV dad Ty Burrell in the movie, but this time, the roles are kind of reversed.
