The outlaw presented in this new Epix series doesn't come off as a hardened killer.
Instead, the Billy the Kid shown on Billy the Kid Season 1 Episode 1 was more of a reluctant gunman, doing just enough to keep ahead of those pursuing him.
Not that that made him any less deadly. It definitely made him a more sympathetic figure around which to build a series.
So did going back in time to see how a young Irish immigrant who loved his hardworking mother and invalid father became one of America's most-feared outlaws.
Like many immigrants, Billy's family, the McCartys, bought into the illusion of the American West being an Eden where anyone could get ahead if they worked hard enough.
Tenement neighbor Frank O'Connor spouted the government's propaganda to convince the McCartys to try their luck out West. Patrick had his doubts, but he could deny nothing to his persistent wife,...

Halo once was supposed to put Xbox on the map as a place for original scripted programming. Instead, the adaptation of the popular video game is helping to establish another digital platform, Paramount+. According to the Paramount streamer, Halo has set a new record as the service’s most-watched series premiere globally in its first 24 hours of release, topping the previous mark established by Yellowstone prequel 1883 in December.
As usual, no numbers were provided; for reference, the record-breaking 1883 series debut on Paramount+ also drew 4.9 million viewers in a promotional linear airing behind Yellowstone on Paramount Network. We will get a sense of the scope of Halo’s viewership when Nielsen’s streaming rankings for this week come out. A Paramount+ original has yet to crack the Nielsen Top 10.

This article contains light spoilers for Halo episode 1.
Ever since Halo: Combat Evolved arrived on Microsoft gaming console Xbox in 2001, the first-person shooter series and multimedia franchise has been represented by one character above all others.
John-117 or “Master Chief” is the perfect video game protagonist. Stoic, powerful, and visually iconic, the Spartan super soldier in green Mjolnir Powered Assault Armor is an ideal player avatar. Not only does the guy look cool as hell but he never breaks kayfabe by taking off his bulky helmet with a shiny gold visor. Master Chief is committed to his cause of defeating the Covenant alien alliance and in battle there’s no time nor reason to remove one’s helmet.
Periodically the series has offered glimpses of the human head underneath that hard hat. Fans have seen brief shots of Master Chief’s eyes and in one instance even gotten a full...

“Halo” has been renewed for a second season by Paramount Plus, in advance of the series premiere of the long-anticipated video game adaptation on March 24. David Wiener — who created “Brave New World” and was a co-executive producer on “Fear the Walking Dead” and “Homecoming” — is also officially joining the series as executive producer and showrunner, which was first reported on Feb 1.
The early renewal is a strong vote of confidence for the adaptation of Microsoft’s $6 billion-dollar blockbuster gaming franchise for the Xbox, which has been in the works as a series since 2014. (That followed Microsoft’s earlier attempt to adapt “Halo” as a feature film property starting in 2005.) Kyle Killen first signed on to run the series in June 2018 when it was still set to debut on Showtime, and Steven Kane joined in March 2019 to continue developing the series, ultimately taking over as lead showrunner when Killen exited. Master Chief is closer to landing a new commander.
David Wiener (“Brave New World”) is in talks to take over showrunner duties on Paramount Plus’ “Halo,” executive producer Justin Falvey announced on Tuesday during the TCA panel for the hotly anticipated video game adaptation.
Wiener’s status with the show remains in flux, as Paramount Plus has not yet officially renewed “Halo” for Season 2. A rep for the streamer says Wiener is one of multiple candidates for a possible showrunner position.

Halo, after more than eight winding years in development, will finally land at Paramount+ this spring.
The sci-fi drama, which stars Pablo Schreiber as video game icon Master Chief, has gone through a number of hoops to get to the ViacomCBS streaming platform – from switching over from Showtime to Paramount+ to the exit of co-showrunner Kyle Kinnen in 2018. However, executive producers including Kiki Wolfkill and Justin Falvey say that finally launching the series was a product of commitment and patience.
“When you have a piece of IP like this, such massive scale and scope, it takes some time to get it right and the commitment from somebody on Steve’s level or any of the other folks we’ve been talking to…it’s recognizing the realities of that and getting it right and being patient,” said Falvey, who executive produces for Amblin Television. “There’s been a constant of...

Kyle Killen, the original showrunner on the Paramount+ “Halo” adaptation, has exited the upcoming streaming series. His fellow co-showrunner, Steven Kane, will remain with the show through Season 1 post-production. That’s the good news. The bad news: should “Halo” get renewed for a second season, Kane will not return.
Kane was brought in to take some of the work off Killen’s plate. He’ll leave should the showed get a Season 2 in order to be closer to his family, a person with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. It has not proven easy to do that from Budapest, where “Halo” is still (read: Still) in production.

Updated: The showrunner of the “Halo” series at Paramount Plus will exit the show once work on Season 1 is over, Variety has learned exclusively.
Steven Kane and Kyle Killen were both attached as co-showrunners on the series at one time. According to sources, Killen departed the project ahead of the start of production as he felt he was unable to render full-time showrunner duties during the show’s shoot in Budapest. Kane then took over as the lead showrunner.
Production is currently ongoing on Season 1 of the series, with Kane set to remain onboard through the post-production process. Should the show get picked up for a second season, however, he will not return. Kane has been in Budapest now for the past two years and wishes to return stateside for personal reasons.

Production is currently ongoing on Season 1 of the series, with Kane set to remain onboard through the post-production process. Should the show get picked up for a second season, however, he will not return. Kane has been in Budapest now for the past two years and wishes to return stateside for personal reasons.
A second season pickup seems likely for the series, given the high-profile nature of the underlying IP and...

It’s been a long, arduous journey for Halo Infinite. First announced at E3 2018, the game has faced a series of delays, reports of behind-the-scenes drama, and plenty of criticism after its underwhelming unveiling last July. Hitting the stage at E3 2021, 343 Industries had something to prove: is Halo Infinite truly the future of the beloved shooter series or a misstep for the studio?
During the Xbox and Bethesda conference, 343 not only shied away from showing another scripted gameplay demo but chose not to announce a release date for the game. A short cinematic trailer introducing the campaign’s story and a sizzle reel highlighting the multiplayer component were the extent of 343’s time on the stage. At the moment, Halo Infinite is still labeled as a “Holiday 2020” game.
Whether this will be enough to change the perception around Halo Infinite as a troubled sequel remains to be seen, but...

Microsoft recently confirmed that Halo Infinite is now scheduled to be released sometime during the fall of 2021. The revelation that the game will be released a year after its recently delayed debut has prompted some fans to ask the question, “How did we get to this point?”
The answer to that question involves requires us to go all the way back to 2015 when Halo Infinite was little more than an idea. What began as the seemingly inevitable development of Halo 6 morphed into one of the deepest dives into development hell that we’ve seen in recent memory.
The timeline of Halo Infinite‘s troubled development isn’t always pretty, but it’s a necessary tool for anyone who wants to understand how Halo Infinite went from a game on the back of the Xbox Series X packaging to a title that may or may not even be released next year.

343 says that Xbox One gamers will not have to suffer through too many Halo: Infinite compromises.
In an interview with YouTuber Blackmist523, Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor reassured fans that Halo: Infinite will still be a worthwhile experience on Xbox One.
"Obviously the special citizen [for Halo Infinite] will be Scarlett, and we've worked with that hardware team to make sure the game shows up amazingly on it," says O'Conner. "But it will [also] be for Xbox One and it will look incredible."
While developers usually release a statement similar to that whenever they need to reassure gamers that their current consoles will still be relevant even as we enter the next-generation, O'Conner dropped one more interesting tidbit that suggests his assurances are more than a company line.
"The Xbox One is not going to be a second-class citizen," says O'Conner. "We're building it so it plays and looks fantastic on Xbox One,...

Despite recent rumors, Halo Infinite will not include a battle royale mode at launch.
People still won't give up on the idea that Halo Infinite is going to ship with a battle royale mode, so Halo director Frank O'Connor has had to step forward once more to set the record straight.
"We will not talk about the launch content of Halo Infinite until we're ready," O'Connor said via ResetEra. "I haven't watched the video so if I am misinterpreting the headline as 'Halo Infinite is launching with/as a Halo battle royale mode' that is still not the case. You can probably make your own battle royale mode in Forge even right now though."

Halo 5: Guardians may be an exclusive to Xbox One right now, but it could come to PC in the future, its director says...
There's just a few days left until Halo 5: Guardians makes its appearance, and this latest Master Chief outing is surely among the most antipated exclusives for the Xbox One. But while it's currently being pitched as a system seller for Microsoft's console, there's at least the possibility that it will appear on PC at some point in the future.
This is according to franchise director Frank O'Connor, who suggested that the narrowing gap between the PC and Xbox One could make a port relatively simple.
"Microsoft has made a huge commitment to normalise the Windows experience across multiple platforms, so you're seeing elements of Windows 10 are going to appear on the Xbox and Cortana and stuff like that," O'Connor told GamesRadar. "There...

343 Industries has reportedly already begun work on the sixth instalment in the popular "Halo" video game franchise, several weeks out from the global release of the fifth game in the series.
Games Radar scored an early look at the upcoming "Golden Joysticks Halo 5" special in which 343's Frank O'Connor and Bonnie Ross reveal that the company has a twenty-year plan in place for the franchise.
O'Connor says not only are they aware of what the sixth entry will deal with story wise, it will apparently lay a 'fictional foundation' which will carry the series through the next two decades:
"We do kind of know what's going to happen in the next game pretty well at this point. We're doing serious real planning and even some writing on the next game already, and that's a luxury - we've never been in that position before.

Jean Arthur films on TCM include three Frank Capra classics Five Jean Arthur films will be shown this evening, Monday, January 5, 2015, on Turner Classic Movies, including three directed by Frank Capra, the man who helped to turn Arthur into a major Hollywood star. They are the following: Capra's Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, You Can't Take It with You, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington; George Stevens' The More the Merrier; and Frank Borzage's History Is Made at Night. One the most effective performers of the studio era, Jean Arthur -- whose film career began inauspiciously in 1923 -- was Columbia Pictures' biggest female star from the mid-'30s to the mid-'40s, when Rita Hayworth came to prominence and, coincidentally, Arthur's Columbia contract expired. Today, she's best known for her trio of films directed by Frank Capra, Columbia's top director of the 1930s. Jean Arthur-Frank Capra...

The Xbox One has some great games, but so far it's missing one key title. The heavy-hitting Halo series is currently Awol, missing out on the console launch. That's set to change, however, although we'll have to wait over a year for the Master Chief's return.

Los Angeles (AP) — Master Chief is returning to the battlefield next year. Microsoft announced plans Friday to release the video game sequel "Halo 5: Guardians" for the Xbox One and a "Halo" television series to be produced by Steven Spielberg in fall 2015. "'Halo 5: Guardians' is obviously a big deal for us," said Frank O'Connor, franchise development director at 343. "It's the next chapter in the Master Chief saga. It's also a big deal for us because of the transition to the Xbox One platform. All of the 'Halo' games — more or less — have added something to the Xbox ecosystem. But that.s not what makes her interesting. Let me make the case. The Fight Club and upcoming 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea director is shepherding a two-minute launch trailer for the November 6th release, with frequent collaborator Tim Miller on as director.
The short, which will make its debut next week on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, will subsequently be available on Halo Waypoint and the Halo 4 YouTube channel.
Directed by visual effects pro Tim Miller (he worked with Fincher on the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo remake and Edgar Wright on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), the short is titled "Scanned." The Prague-shot piece will dig into the Master Chief's backstory, and presumably set up the action for the game.
343 Industries' Frank O'Connor weighs in: “[Fincher and Miller's] involvement is a testament to the significance of ‘Halo’ as a pop culture touchstone, and we think fans are going to be blown away when they see the final piece.”

Many games in the past have tried to differentiate their models of development and distribution by shirking lengthy development times in favour of shorter, more frequently-released games. It's a tricky model to get right, because as a general rule of thumb modern games development is something which, by its very nature, becomes a bit of a time sink as devs have to make sure all the pieces of the puzzle work exactly as they're supposed to. Episodic content, as it's become known, has been bandied about by a few developers with varying degrees of success - some, like Telltale Games, have managed to pull it off fairly effectively with their latest few franchises, especially with their latest series of episodic games that tie in with The Walking Dead TV series; others, without pointing any fingers, have fallen short by being simply too ambitious, leading to a very notable absence of...

Microsoft has officially announced that they will be developing a new live-action Halo Web series that will be launched before Halo 4 hit stores this fall. We might not be getting a live action Halo movie anytime soon, but Microsoft hopes this new series will revive big screen interest in the property.
The series will be called Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, and there's a ton of money being pumped into it. Microsoft revealed that this is the "the largest investment" they've ever made in a live-action project to date. It will play exclusively on the entertainment website Machinima and at the online community Halo Waypoint. It will play out over five weekly installments, and each episode will be around 15 minutes long.

Miranda July has been described as a leading talent of the Us avant garde. Her quirky style has caused vitriol, but her new film The Future is being hailed as a left-field masterpiece
A film about two annoying, self-absorbed thirtysomethings living in Los Angeles and struggling with the idea of mortality hardly sounds like the stuff of great cinema. Throw in the fact that the movie is narrated in part by an injured talking cat called Paw-Paw and the project sounds like one for the celluloid scrap heap.
Yet The Future, which deals with the impact Paw-Paw has on the couple after they agree to look after him, has been one of the cult hits of America's art-house scene this summer and its creator, Miranda July, has been hailed as one of the hottest names in independent cinema.
The praise heaped on The Future far outstrips its seemingly flimsy and self-consciously odd plot outline.

It's been 2 long years since we heard the news that director/producer Steven Spielberg would be in the process of developing a live-action Halo film. The is a film most of us would love to see happen, but who knows if it ever will.

A film adaptation is set in 2012 . It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and studio Dreamworks.
That seems like a pretty clear straight forward couple of sentences. Either someone has their facts screwed up when writing the press release, or there's a Halo film in the development process, and some information...

Halo 4 developers 343 Industries have revealed details about the upcoming trilogy of games. The team behind the latest batch of sequels revealed that the new series will span a decade and will collectively be known as the "Reclaimer Trilogy", reports Eurogamer. The next game in the series is a direct sequel to Halo 3 and takes place on a mysterious Forerunner planet, which features a "different aspect" of the alien architecture found in the previous games. Leave it to a psychologist at the University of Essex to discover that the secret sauce in irresistible video games is the characters' personalities--especially those that leave just enough creative space for players to pour themselves into.
"Games offer a window. They offer you that window to be your ideal self," Andrew Przybylski, a Halo and Angry Birds player himself, says. Previously, Przybylski has shown that players prefer challenges in games to violence. His new study in the journal Psychological Science, explains that the further away a person's real life is from the "ideal" character they play in a game--the better fit they can find in the hero's skin--the more enjoyable they find a game. It's the role-playing of Dungeons & Dragons multiplied by the power of powerful processors and pixels.

The blockbuster video game franchise birthed by the combined efforts of Bungie and Microsoft has dominated the video game market for the better part of 10 years and the film adaptation has dominated the rumor mill almost as long. When Kevin Smith randomly premiered a teaser trailer [1] for his independently-financed horror film Red State yesterday, I was surprised to see it conclude with the promise of a "March" release. As you might recall, the film has yet to secure distribution, with Smith hinting that the film might be released using some kind of innovative distribution model. Kevin told us in November that he planned to auction off the movie to the highest bidder [2] following the premiere screening at the Sundance Film Festival (in January), in the room. I was quick to ask Smith [3] if he really planned on releasing the film in a few months. He didn't respond to me, but he did respond to another twitter user. So does this mean that the film will be released in March? Find out what Smith said, after the jump. Smith tweeted [4]: Via @ToastedSchizo "So ballsy of you to put...

The battle to get a 'Halo' movie has been a long struggle filled with big plans and dashed hopes. We've seen the likes of Guillermo Del Toro, Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp attached to direct, Denzel Washington in talks to star and scripts arise from Alex Garland ('28 Days Later') and Stuart Beattie ('G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra'). Time and time again, though, nothing comes of it. What's keeping one of the more epic and popular video game franchises from getting the Hollywood adaptation treatment? Nothing so dramatic, actually: disputes over contracts, budgetary concerns, licensing disagreements and so on and so forth.
So here we are, nearly a decade after the first Halo game arrived on the Xbox, shook up the whole gaming industry and went on to produce more than a few record breaking sequels. 'Resident Evil' got a few movies.
