Simmering tensions seem to underpin the delay of Fast & Furious 9 by a year...
Yikes. Things behind the scenes of the Fast & Furious movies don’t seem to be on the happy side, following the announcement last week that Fast & Furious 9 has been put back a year to 2020. And Tyrese, one of the main members of the ensemble cast, is in little doubt where the finger should be pointed.

In a few decades’ time, when you’re bouncing your grandson on your knee and he looks up at you with huge, innocent eyes and asks, through the respirator he needs to filter the unbreathable air, “Meemoo, where were you when America fell?”, it is a source of some perverse joy that at least some of you will be able to gaze dreamily out across the barren, scarred landscape and reply, “Watching Vin Diesel ride a motorbike underwater.” Tomorrow, two equally momentous and potentially world-changing events take place: the inauguration of the first American president to be made entirely of Spam and spray cheese, and the opening of “xXx: Return of Xander Cage.” One of them promises to be a brainless, garish, incoherent, noisy, lowest-common-denominator spectacle; the other is the second sequel to Rob Cohen‘s “xXx” (2002).

Intense Clip For xXx: Return Of Xander Cage Finds Vin Diesel’s Thrill-Seeker Soaring Through The Air
Xander Cage is, first and foremost, a daredevil. First introduced more than a decade ago in Rob Cohen’s gleefully over-the-top actioner xXx, over the years Cage has been unwittingly pushed to the sidelines as Vin Diesel’s attention was drawn to the Fast and Furious franchise.
Even at eight films in, Universal’s lucrative street-racing series continues to rake in the big numbers at the international box office – its latest installment, The Fate of the Furious, is on course for April 14, 2017 – but Diesel has carved out room on his busy schedule to revive his forgotten action hero, and so we stand on the cusp of xXx: Return Of Xander Cage.

Though Rob Cohen started the franchise with the first film and various helmers have handled the numerous entries over the years, no filmmaker is more synonymous with the "Fast and Furious" franchise than Justin Lin.
Having helmed the third through sixth of the films, including the critically acclaimed apex of the series in "Fast Five," Lin sat both the seventh and currently in production eighth film of the series out to work on other projects.
Universal Pictures has already announced plans for a ninth and tenth film in the series to be released in 2019 and 2021 respectively, with that tenth film is set to serve as the finale for the main story of the franchise and likely Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto character. Spinoffs and prequels are planned, but 'Fast 10' is the effective being seen as the "end" of the main thrust of the series.

Vin Diesel posted the above photo a couple of hours ago on Facebook, welcoming Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen to the cast of XXX: The Return Of Xander Cage, the reboot of the other action franchise Diesel launched with director Rob Cohen. An anonymous source close to the production also tells us that Yen has been hastily cast to replace Jet Li, who has chosen to exit the project for as-yet officially undisclosed reasons. Otherwise, however, the international cast of the film remains the same, with Tony Jaa, Deepika Padukone, Toni Collette, Samuel L. Jackson and a rumoured Ice Cube returning, for incoming director D.J. Caruso. One of the great highlights of the Fast & Furious franchise has been its insanely diverse cast, and it is...

Disturbia helmer D.J. Caruso is fast becoming Hollywood’s go-to guy for threequels no one asked really asked for in the first place. After signing on to tackle G.I. Joe 3 for Paramount, the director has reportedly boarded the long-in-the-works xXx 3.
Speaking with io9, Diesel seemed bullish about the would-be blockbuster, though he noted that Furious 8 may end up taking off before it now that F. Gary Gray has been selected to replace James Wan in the director’s chair on that far more high-profile project:
“I’m excited as hell about XXX. D.J. Caruso is directing it, which is exciting. The big question now is which will race to production first now that F. Gary Gray is on [Furious 8]? Will XXX race to production first or will Fast race to production first?”

With James Wan electing to continue on The Conjuring franchise, the director’s chair for Fast & Furious 8 (possibly just called Fast 8) has been left vacant for a while now with every one from the original movie’s director Rob Cohen to Vin Diesel himself in the mix. After some furious speculation, Straight Outta Compton’s F Gary Gray has been confirmed to direct the eighth addition to the Fast & Furious franchise. How odd those words would have all sounded together 8 years ago…
The hot talent – who is apparently also under consideration for Marvel’s Black Panther in 2018 – apparently beat The Signal’s Will Eubank, The Guest’s Adam Wingard and Louis Leterrier, as well as killing rumours that Vin Diesel wanted either Rob Cohen or himself to direct.
Just two days after Diesel posted on Facebook that he has met with the director (but not cut a deal), Gary Gray took to Twitter to confirm his official hiring:

Update: As Gray himself tweets below, this is now official, and Gray has taken the job. Following an unusually protracted search, it looks very much as if Fast & Furious 8 has finally found its director. One of those 'director shortlist' stories emerged overnight, suggesting that F. Gary Gray, Louis Leterrier (The Transporter), William Eubank (The Signal) , Ericson Core (the Point Break remake), Adam Wingard (You're Next) and original F&F helmer Rob Cohen were all in the mix. But while nothing has yet been officially announced, Vin Diesel's posting of the above picture - of himself and Gray with a pinboard of F&F images between them - on his megahorn Facebook page very much suggests that Gray is the winner.Gray is coming off the hit Nwa biopic Straight Outta Compton, and has previous with Diesel, having directed him in the action drama A Man Apart in 2003. Justin Lin has no plans to return to the "Fast and Furious" franchise and apparently neither does director James Wan, who made "Furious 7" one of the highest grossing movies of all time. According to Variety, Universal Pictures is now considering several directors to take over the franchise, including F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), Adam Wingard (The Guest), Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) and Will Eubank (The Signal). Vin Diesel will also have a say in who will direct the eighth film. Just recently, he hinted that the job may go to Rob Cohen, who directed the first installment. Production is set to begin during spring of 2016, but pre-production will get going later this month. The studio would prefer to have a director on board by that time.

F. Gary Gray's about to get paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaid. And why not? "Straight Outta Compton" has been a monster hit for Universal, a surprise to many box-office prognosticators, and in a strange way, that film brought Gray full circle. After all, his first film was "Friday," starring Ice Cube, and his latest film is a blockbuster biopic of, among other people, Ice Cube. There is no franchise more important for Universal to finish out in style than the "Fast and Furious" series. Right now, the announced plan is for there to be three more movies, one final trilogy, that will round the entire series out to ten full movies. That is, frankly, amazing when you consider what a low-key hit the first film was. No one would believe you if you went back in time to the summer the first film came out and you told people that eventually, each entry...

As the hunt for a director to Fast & Furious 8 continues, the search is now down to four potential names, it's revealed...
We recently heard the strange story that one of the biggest franchises on the planet is struggling to find a director. With Fast & Furious 7 breaking the $1.5bn barrier and its sequel pegged for a 2017 release, The Hollywood Reporter suggested that Universal had offered Fast 8 to several filmmakers - who'd all turned it down.
James Wan, Justin Lin and Jaume Collet-Serra were all offered the Fast 8 gig, and all passed because they had other plans - Wan has Robotech and Aquaman, Lin has Star Trek Beyond, and Collet-Serra appears to be busy with The Shallows, which has something to do with a shark.

F. Gary Gray ("Straight Outta Compton," "The Italian Job") appears to have beaten out Adam Wingard ("The Guest"), Louis Leterrier ("Now You See Me") and Will Eubank ("The Signal") for the job of helming the eighth film in the "Fast and Furious" franchise.
Yesterday Variety revealed the four who had met with Universal about the gig. With Justin Lin committed to "Star Trek Beyond" and James Wan turning down a lucrative offer to return to the franchise a few weeks ago, the hunt began for a new director.

Earlier today, we told you about some very interesting social media posts from Vin Diesel which appeared to indicate that Rob Cohen may return to take the helm of Fast and Furious 8. However, a new report from Deadline refutes that; instead, Ericson Core (Point Break) and Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) are said to be among those eyed by Universal to direct.
Both men would certainly bring the crazy, over the top action to the franchise that we’ve come to expect, but now Diesel has taken to his Facebook page to issue a statement which once again seems to indicate that he’s considering stepping in as director, something the studio is apparently not even remotely keen on making a reality.

Though it has been ten years since the sequel and thirteen years since he last starred in the franchise, Vin Diesel has revealed that a third film in the "xXx" film series is not only on the way but has lined up a December start of filming date.
The original film starred Diesel as Xander Cage, an extreme sports enthusiast recruited by the Government to become a special agent. The film essentially tried to give a big ol' finger to the James Bond films, was critically panned, but made nearly $300 million from a $70 million budget.
Diesel opted out of returning for the follow-up which starred Ice Cube in the lead role. That film bombed Big time with a global gross of just $71 million and far more shocking reviews.
Diesel mentioned the news of a third film's start date in a social media posting over the weekend, not the first time he's done this.

Over the years, the Fast & Furious franchise has established itself as one that is driven (no pun intended) by the voice of the chosen director. Rob Cohen and John Singleton brought a distinct flavor to the opening two chapters of the saga. The series found its footing under Justin Lin, and James Wan kept Furious 7 on track after the devastating loss of Paul Walker. With Furious 8 on the horizon, we have been very curious who would pick up the baton and continue to run with the series, but it turns out, there.s a very good reason why that decision hasn.t been made yet. Neal Moritz has served as a producer on this massive franchise since day one, shepherding the Fast & Furious crew from the streets of Los Angeles to its current state of global domination. Watching a film by Olivier Assayas is a little like wandering into the bedroom of a teenager, taking in the aesthetic décor that clings to his or her walls and bookshelves—posters, pop records, hastily cut-out collages of idols, and literature—and being left to draw a logical conclusion based on these ephemeral scraps. This idea of collage, assembling or reinventing an identity, has always been a concept inherent to punk and youth culture: British punk historian Jon Savage coined the term “living collage” to describe European teenagers in the 1970s who tore apart thrifted vintage clothing at the seams to fuse and repurpose them with safety pins. Assayas’ work is essentially the filmic equivalent of that same idea: he populates his frames with torrents of ideas and surfaces and lets loose cinematographers Yorick Le Saux and Eric Gautier to pan wildly, struggling to encapsulate everything into their widescreen, handheld compositions.

What does it mean to be Canadian? Aside from the geographically obvious, the question doesn’t evoke an immediate and clear answer that can be articulated. It’s like when Morpheus asks Neo “What is real?” in The Matrix. This question also apparently haunted sitcom writer Rob Cohen, as he embarked on a coast-to-coast quest to define his home country.
The film begins by exploiting one of the stereotypical character traits of the Canadians: being funny. Being Canadian is only a semi-serious sociological investigation into decoding the mystique of Canada, and since director Cohen’s day job is as a sitcom writer, producer and director, that should hardily be surprising. For talking head segments, he gathers a myriad of Canadian-born comedians universally recognized as some of the funniest people in the business. High-octane sequel Fast & Furious 7 satisfies as an action film and a moving send-off for the late Paul Walker, Ryan writes...
Fifteen years ago, a magazine article about illegal street racing left a producer with dollar signs in his eyes, and the result was the trashily entertaining The Fast & The Furious - a high-speed reworking of Point Break with a title taken from an old Roger Corman movie (director Rob Cohen got the title from Corman in exchange for a few reels of stock footage).
That Universal now has such a huge franchise on its hands is no small thanks to director Justin Lin, who managed to take the series from its increasingly niche street racing roots and into new, colossally over-the-top action territory with Fast Five. But Fast & Furious 7 sees Lin replaced by a new director, James Wan - a filmmaker more closely associated with his Saw films than high-octane stunts.

Rob Cohen's half-baked erotic thriller plays like a misguided homage to Eighties video fare and to family-in-peril sagas like Unlawful Entry or Cape Fear. When Hrithik, Rakesh Roshan and his family met Fast & Furious director Rob Cohen, a section of the media went berserk with speculation. Soon the speculation that Hrithik would be doing a film with Cohen turned into report stating that Hrithik would indeed be doing an action film with Cohen. Laughs Rakesh Roshan, "Sometimes the media knows things about us that we don't. It's easy to calculate and say Hrithik met Rob Cohen. And since Rob is known for the Fast & Furious series they're doing an action film together. But no such thing is happening. Rob is a friend and we met just for a meal." Rakesh Roshan further adds, "We've known Rob from the time when we did Kites. Rob is a big fan of Hrithik. It's true he wants to make a film with Hrithik. But there's no project at the moment." Interestingly, Hrithik has constantly shunned all attempts to be wooed by Hollywood.

Rob Cohen ("Fast and the Furious," "xXx") is set to direct upcoming action heist thriller "Risk" which begins production this summer.
The "Topkapi"-style caper story follows a brilliant thief as he is released from prison early to execute a nearly impossible art heist. Eric Harlacher wrote the screenplay.
Meanwhile, Julius Onah ("The Girl Is in Trouble") is set to direct the film adaptation of Marcus Sakey's novel "Brilliance" for Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures.
David Koepp penned the adaptation set in a world where a rare set of people called 'brilliants' are born with extraordinary abilities.
At the center of the story is a federal agent with great hunting skills who is drafted to hunt down a terrorist and 'brilliant' who intends to start a civil war.

Over the weekend actor Paul Walker, best known for his role in Universal's ongoing "Fast and Furious" franchise, died tragically in a car accident in California. The actor was in the midst of filming the seventh film in the series, with every intention of continuing. As Bilge Ebiri pointed out over at Vulture, the series was originally designed as a vehicle for Walker, based on the actor's experience working with original director Rob Cohen on the marginal collegiate thriller "The Skulls." Even after his death it's easy to be glib about his skills as an actor, but Walker turned in a handful of memorable performances both within and outside of the 'Fast' franchise. Walker was handsome. This is an undeniable fact, as much as water is wet and the sky is blue. But he was more than that too, capable of nuance and shading in roles that usually required neither.

Road House is a movie with a level of cult popularity that I'll never understand. And now, as we reported this morning, MGM and director Rob Cohen want to remake it. Whether they're into the original's cheesy charm or not, it's likely that they'll aim for a more mainstream appeal rather than another version that will go down in history as an ironically enjoyed, so bad it's good kind of niche guilty pleasure. But if there is one thing to really love about the 1989 movie, besides the fact that it's directed by a guy appropriately named Rowdy (Herrington), it's Patrick Swayze. The movie and the star are sort of synonymously aligned. So who could possibly fill those boots in the redo? As was said earlier today, Vin Diesel seems like the obvious choice...

I have to admit, I have a really big soft spot for Patrick Swayze’s 1989 flick “Road House”. I mean, the dude ripped some guy’s throat out with his bare hands! Whoa! Nowadays, you’d never be able to see something like “Road House” on the big screen. Looks like MGM wants to change all that. As they are wont to do, the folks at MGM have tapped yet another movie from their library for the remake bock — this time director Rowdy Herrington’s “Road Houses”. (I mean, the guy’s name is Rowdy, and the movie is about a kung fu fightin’ bouncer with a mullet. How can that not be a no-brainer?) The Wrap says the remakingest studio of them all have tapped “Fast and Furious” director Rob Cohen to direct the remake. The original starred Swayze was Dalton, a mysterious bouncer who, ahem, bounces from town to town,...

Fast & Furious 7: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson and Vin Diesel look very intimidating in a new behind-the-scenes photo shared by Diesel from the set of Fast & Furious 7. Diesel appears much more relaxed in another image with director James Wan. The movie roars into theaters on July 11, 2014. [Coming Soon] Road House: Rob Cohen, who got the Fast & Furious franchise off the ground by directing the first installment, and then worked with Vin Diesel on the action epic xXx, will now apply his skills to remaking 1989's Road House. The original starred Patrick Swayze as an expert bouncer, a "cooler," brought in from New York City to tame a very rowdy bar in Missouri. Sounds like a natural-born role for Vin Diesel, doesn't it? MGM is remaking the 1989 Patrick Swayze film Road House and has tapped Rob Cohen to direct it. The original told the story of a tough but soft spoken bouncer who takes a job in a small town bar only to run afoul of a corrupt business man who has a stranglehold on the townfolk. The movie was one of Swayze’s biggest hits and was part of his ascent to stardom. (Ghost, released in 1990, was his next movie.)

The Boy Next Door which is a micro-budgeted thriller directed by Rob Cohen, will star Jennifer Lopez, reports Variety. Jason Blum (the Insidious, Paranormal Activity, The Purge films) who has a first-look deal at Universal, will produce via his Blumhouse. Lopez would play a newly separated mother who sparks an affair with her new teenage neighbor who's made pals with her son. Trouble starts when she tries to end the relationship.
