South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone moved to the big screen with their feature Team America. Although the film received positive reviews and enjoyed a healthy box-office run, both Parker and Stone vowed to never make another puppet feature.

Parker and Stone took a break from their South Park obligations to focus their attention and time on Team America. The comedy had a similar personality and tone to their hit Comedy Central program, parodying real-world events at the time. Despite the film’s success, however, both Parker and Stone confided that it was far from a pleasure to work on. So much so that even after it was done, Stone wondered if developing the film was worth the cost.

Remembering The Comedians Of Comedy, Netflix's First True Original Production (A Quasi-Oral History)
If I asked you to name the first original production from Netflix, what would you say? An educated guess might bring you to "House of Cards" or "Lilyhammer," and that's a fair assessment. While the former was Netflix's first piece of original programming produced specifically for the company's streaming service (released in February of 2013), the latter technically has the honor of being Netflix's first original streaming production (premiering on Netflix in February of 2012), even though it was only partially funded by Netflix and actually premiered in Norway first under the TV network NRK1.
But what if I told you that neither of these was the first true Netflix original? What if I told you Netflix produced their first original production even before they created the now-defunct Red Envelope Entertainment? Yes, before streaming, Netflix had a film financing and acquisition arm that shuttered in 2008 after investing in more than 100 films and...

It takes a specific formula and something unique to nail the coming-of-age, young adult series, something that presently, even the best there is to offer falls short.
When it comes to capturing the college-aged genre, Felicity is the blueprint.
It's been 25 years since Felicity premiered on the now-defunct network The WB, and the magic of the series and the subsequent impact of it still holds up today.
Felicity's indelible legacy marked the acclaimed J.J. Abrams' first foray into television, opening the door for other massive hits such as Alias and Lost.
The series also made breakout stars out of Keri Russell, Scott Speedman, Scott Foley, and Greg Grunberg, who have been successful household names since.
In honor of the 25th anniversary, a rewatch of the pilot was warranted, and it's incredible how much it transports one back to pre-9/11 to perfectly capture the profound introspection, whimsy, and cringe of just entering adulthood.

1996 was a dark year for The Italian Stallion. Sylvester Stallone had two pricey flops in 1995, with Judge Dredd and Assassins. His Christmas of 1996 disaster movie release, Daylight, was another box office bomb. Just a few years before, Stallone had made a significant comeback with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but now the whole industry was changing. Carolco, the company that financed some of the era’s biggest hits, had gone bankrupt, and action movies were getting smaller and smaller. Arnold Schwarzenegger was on the decline, with Eraser a smaller hit than usual. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were only a few years away from making direct-to-video movies. What was Sly to do? The result is one of his very best movies –Cop Land – as we explore in the episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited.

Dogma is the kind of movie that has to be seen to be believed. But, then again, it’s a movie about belief. Well, kind of. Writer/director Kevin Smith made a movie that poked considerable fun at religion, and the Catholic Church in particular, while simultaneously showing a broad knowledge of religious dogma. Of course, the film drew quite a bit of controversy at the time, even causing its release date to be pushed back by a year, from 1998 to 1999. But, when released, it also became a moderate hit, thanks to an all-star cast that included Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, Linda Fiorentino, and Janeane Garofalo. Yet, even with all of those big names, Smith managed to make the movie for just $10 million, and he told us how he was able to do that. (Click on the media bar below to hear Kevin Smith) https://www.

Paul Rudd became popular thanks to a succession of iconic films like Clueless and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. These days, he isn’t just a star of comedies. He’s a bonafide action hero as well, and a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Still, Rudd has never forgotten his roots, and the movies that helped to make him a star. One of the first things that come to mind about James Mangold's 1997 crime drama "Cop Land" is its stacked cast — and how some of them played against type. Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro were just the tip of the macho iceberg in a who's-who ensemble of stars and familiar character actors. There was also Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, and Malik Yoba -- the list goes on and on. Even smaller roles utilized notable Martin Scorsese alumni like Cathy Moriarty and Frank Vincent, and future "The Sopranos" stars Edie Falco and Tony Sirico (the latter of whom only appears in a surveillance photo). This was the movie that put "Rocky" and "Raging Bull" in the ring together and had Stallone gain 40 pounds to play a half-deaf sheriff in a New Jersey town populated by corrupt cops.

David Fincher’s Fight Club is an extraordinary cinematic gem of 1999. The film spoke to a generation of disaffected youth who grew up listening to Rage Against the Machine and vandalizing road signs to anger “the Man.” Visually grimy, mysterious, and acting like a religion for seemingly disenfranchised males, one of the film’s standout characters is Helena Bonham Carter’s Marla, the love interest of Edward Norton’s narrator and protagonist. Before Carter joined the cast, Fincher considered Janeane Garofalo, Winona Ryder, and Courtney Love for the coveted role. Love was dating Norton at the time and longed to play the part. However, according to Love, she was fired from the film after Norton’s co-star, Brad Pitt, had her stricken from the cast list.

When David Fincher made the 1999 film “Fight Club,” there were a few actresses considered to play Marla, the love interest of Edward Norton’s narrator and protagonist. Among them were Janeane Garofalo, Winona Ryder, and Norton’s then-girlfriend Courtney Love, before the role ultimately went to Helena Bonham Carter. Now, Love is claiming that she was cast in the part and ready to shoot the film, before co-lead Brad Pitt got her booted from production.
The “Hole” frontwoman made the claims during an interview on Marc Maron’s podcast “Wtf” released December 27. The story is set in a confined location, a secluded house in the woods, with few characters, and there is a story to be told. The intended tension that should be running high throughout soon dims in the first act.

In the movie The Apology, Darlene Hagen hasn’t had a happy Christmas since she experienced every parent’s worst nightmare. This one particular holiday is already hard enough to get through, but now this heartbroken mother is paid an unexpected visit from a ghost of Christmas past.
Alison Locke’s first long feature lives on the less celebrated side of Christmas storytelling. As cheerless and severe as The Apology is, though, it also taps into that sort of unexplained magic often found in holiday movies. Some kind of unnatural force has to be at work when watching Anna Gunn’s character receive the most complicated Christmas gift imaginable. But her unique present comes with strings attached...

A Little Under 10 years ago, Michael Showalter realized the time had come to give up on his Hollywood dreams and start taking whatever work he could find to pay the bills. He’s the star and co-creator of the 2001 cult classic Wet Hot American Summer, and a key member of the groundbreaking Nineties sketch-comedy group the State, but work had been very scarce in recent years, and his wife was about to give birth to twins. He wound up taking a midlevel job in the writing room of Rebel Wilson...

Who would have expected that Derek Zoolander himself would end up becoming one of today's most prominent dramatic storytellers? In recent years, Ben Stiller has set his comedic aspirations aside for an emphasis on prestige television. He directed the entirety of the riveting prison break miniseries "Escape at Dannemora" and the psychological thriller "Severance." If you've been paying attention, it's been clear that Stiller is a creative storyteller who knows how to surprise an audience. It's only a surprise to see the new direction in his career because he's always been making us laugh so much.
In the late 1990s, a group of comic actors known as the "Frat Pack" began to dominate mainstream comedy. While the careers of Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Steve Carrell, Jack Black, and Paul Rudd were fairly consistent, Stiller managed to mix in a variety of independent projects alongside mainstream studio films. "If it's not revenge, what… would you want?" Rlje Films has revealed the official trailer for a thriller titled The Apology, arriving in the middle of December to watch. It looks creepy! Not quite horror, but certainly unsettling for many different reasons. Twenty years after the disappearance of her daughter, a recovering alcoholic is preparing to host her small family's Christmas celebration when her estranged ex-bother-in-law arrives unannounced, bearing nostalgic gifts and a heavy secret. Soon, Darlene finds herself caught between reason and ruthless instinct. What will she do? Watch to find out. This is another sneaky trailer that cleverly sets up the premise just before it cuts before the title. Nice to see a trailer that doesn't show the whole film! The Apology stars Anna Gunn, Linus Roache, Holland Bailey, and Janeane Garofalo. Take a look. ›››

For Variety’s latest issue, we asked the Duffer Brothers to write a tribute to Maya Hawke, one of 53 people to make our New Power of New York list. For the full list, click here.
“A young Janeane Garofalo.” That’s how we originally pitched the character of Robin in “Stranger Things.” But that’s about all we had. Well, that and two short scenes where Robin hands out ice cream with Steve Harrington. We just didn’t really know who Robin was — what made her interesting, what made her stand out. That is, until our casting director, Carmen Cuba, gave us the three-word answer: “She’s Maya Hawke.” “Who?” we asked. “Just … trust me,” she said.
Fast-forward six months, and we’re shooting in that ice cream shop, and Maya pulls us aside and asks, “So … are you guys basically just writing … me?” We had to laugh, because the answer was,...

“We Started Jamming in 2014,” Elizabeth Stokes says on a Zoom one afternoon in August, trying to trace the formation of her band. “Jamming,” she repeats, chuckling as she puts up air-quotes. “I don’t feel cool enough to use that word.”
This is the kind of self-deprecation Stokes is notorious for — a defining feature, as much or more so than her slick, straight-across bangs that evoke Reality Bites-era Janeane Garofalo. When the 31-year-old combines that sense of humor with instant-singalong power-pop hooks and glowing verse melodies, you get the Beths,...

James Ponsoldt is expecting this question. Why did the guy who made films like “Smashed,” “The Spectacular Now,” and “The End of the Tour” — dark, knowing dramas about messed-up adults, typically with substance abuse problems and a host of neuroses — turn his attention to “Summering,” a film about four tween girls in the waning days of their favorite season?
He’s got the answer in hand: He’s a parent of three kids, his wife Megan works in the public-school system, and this is the stuff he wants to share with his family.
But the real answer? It’s still a James Ponsoldt film. It’s not as dark as its predecessors, but the filmmaker is still using his craft to ask some very deep questions. “Summering” is, after all, about a group of girls who discover a very dead body and must grapple with what to do next.

This look at the ethics of transplantation, starring Grammer as a surgeon, doesn’t wind up as tough-minded as it first appears
There’s something about organ-transplant movies that encourages sentimentality and wishy-washy melodrama; looking back to movies such as Return to Me or Seven Pounds or My Sister’s Keeper. But this one promises a more hard-edged look at the ethics, the compromises and the difficult choices. “The heart is just a muscle,” grunts top surgeon Andre Boxer, played by Kelsey Grammer. Boxer is a gruff, cheerless workaholic who smokes like a chimney and often looks terrible. It’s a bravely unflattering and un-Frasier-like role, though somewhat improbably, Boxer is sleeping with a colleague played by Julia Stiles, a good 25 years his junior.
The crux of the story is an urgent debate over who should receive a heart that has unexpectedly become available. Alongside Grammer and Stiles on the transplant...

Kelsey Grammer and Julia Stiles do not make a natural romantic couple, and their awkward pairing is the largest misstep made by “The God Committee,” writer-director Austin Stark’s adaptation of Mark St. Germain’s play about a group of doctors tasked with deciding which of three patients should receive a heart transplant. Often resembling a schematic variation on “Twelve Angry Men” by way of “Grey’s Anatomy,” this earnest drama is That won’t be enough to garner it much box-office traction, but it does make it a solid option for adult VOD viewers.
