Nicole Kidman Was Just Named One of the World's Most Influential People

Honestly, is there anything Nicole Kidman can't do? She's (deservedly) won accolade after accolade for her portrayal of Celeste Wright, as well as her role in producing HBO's mini-series Big Little Lies, and now she's winning global praise for her support of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements by Time magazine. Releasing their annual top 100 list of their most influential people, Nicole joined the likes of Cardi B, Gal Gadot, and Hugh Jackman on the esteemed list. This comes as no surprise to us — we've known all about Nicole's starpower for decades. But ever-so-humble Nic doesn't claim all the credit for her success — specifically the success of Big Little Lies. Nicole as Celeste in Big Little Lies. Evan Rachel Wood Will Finally Be Paid the Same Amount as Her Male Costars on Westworld

You might think, at this point, that discovering that some of TV's most-buzzed about leading ladies - ones who carry their shows and are largely the reasons people keep watching - are being paid less than their male costars would come as less of a shock. It happens pretty much weekly at this point. But every time news about it comes out, it's just as unbelievably disappointing as the time before. Luckily, we have some more promising news to report on the issue today: Evan Rachel Wood will finally receive the same salary as her leading male counterparts for her work on season three of Westworld. The actress, who plays Dolores on the hit HBO sci-fi drama, recently opened up to The Wrap about how she found out.

"I think I'm just now to the point where I'm getting paid the same as my male co-stars," she said, explaining that

Evan Rachel Wood Is ‘Just Now’ Receiving the Same Pay as Male ‘Westworld’ Co-Stars (Exclusive Video)

Evan Rachel Wood Is ‘Just Now’ Receiving the Same Pay as Male ‘Westworld’ Co-Stars (Exclusive Video)
It’s hard to argue that anyone’s face is more strongly associated with “Westworld” than Dolores Abernathy’s (Evan Rachel Wood).

But the actress who plays the robotic rancher’s daughter in HBO’s sci-fi hit tells TheWrap that her paycheck didn’t match her status for the series’ first two seasons. At least, it wasn’t equal to what the leading men were raking in.

“I think I’m just now to the point where I’m getting paid the same as my male co-stars,” Wood said in a recent interview with Sharon Waxman, TheWrap’s founder and CEO.

With the sophomore installment about to premiere, Wood found out she was getting a bump for Season 3 equal to the likes of Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris — the men of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s drama (well, the latter still is, as of that messy freshman year finale).

“I was just told that, you know, ‘Hey you’re, you’re getting equal pay.’ And I was like [gasp]. And I almost got emotional,” Wood said. “I was like, ‘I have never been paid the same as my male counterparts … Never, never.'”

“I found out … I’m always fighting for that,” Wood added. “And I have turned down projects — “Westworld,” it’s like, I get it a little more,” she said laughing. “It’s like, ‘Well, you’re Anthony Hopkins or Ed Darris.’ But I think now we’re all doing equal amounts of work and really hard work.”

Wood said up until now, she has been making “pretty much the same amount of money on things for years.”

“I have not moved,” Wood said. “And I’m not saying I’m in like dire straits. I’m very lucky … It’s more about if you’re getting paid fairly, or the same, or if you’re getting paid less simply because you’re a woman, that’s not fair.”

“There’s a lot of politics, but there’s a lot of things that are now being talked about in a different way,” Wood added. “There is a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes. There is a lot of trying to make things equal and trying to make things fair. I don’t know, there is a lot of stuff. But this is the first time that somebody made a point of being like, ‘Hey you’re getting this. And you deserve it.’ And that was nice.”

Earlier this month, HBO boss Casey Bloys addressed the topic of pay parity at the premium cabler following comments made by an exec who said the bump in salaries the cast of “Big Little Lies” received for Season 2 “raped” the network.

“One of the things that’s come out of thinking about the movement and some conversations with Reese [Witherspoon], who’s really at the forefront, is something we’ve done recently,” Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve proactively gone through all of our shows — in fact, we just finished our process where we went through and made sure that there were no inappropriate disparities in pay; and where there were, if we found any, we corrected it going forward. And that’s is a direct result of the Times Up movement.”

Bloys added that pay parity “becomes more of an issue when you get into Season 2 and Season 3, assuming the show is a success.”

“When you’re putting a show together, people come in with different levels of experience and maybe some people have won awards or something that makes them stand out. But when you get into Season 2 or 3 of a show and the show is a success, it is much harder to justify paying people wildly disparate numbers, and that’s where you have to make sure that you’re looking at the numbers — that they don’t end up just on the path they were on from the pilot stage. So, the thing that has been interesting about the whole movement is that it really is reminding everybody to do what’s right, and I think it’s retraining all of our thinking.”

HBO declined TheWrap’s request for comment on this story.

HBO Reveals Reese Witherspoon Helped Them Fix Their Gender Pay Gap

While stories of pay disparities between men and women working in TV and film are depressingly frequent (see the recent controversy that emerged over Claire Foy and Matt Smith’s respective salaries for The Crown), things are ever so slowly starting to improve, thanks in no small part to the Time’s Up movement and its vocal supporters. For a case of positive change in action, just look to HBO — the network has proactively tackled its gender pay gap after conversations with Reese Witherspoon, a Time’s Up advocate and the star of HBO’s major hit Big Little Lies. In a conversation with the Hollywood Reporter, president of programming Casey Bloys revealed more about the change that Time’s Up has inspired in his organization. "One of the things that’s come out of thinking about the [Time’s Up] movement and some conversations with Reese, who’s really at the forefront,

Will BFFs Nicole Kidman (‘Top of the Lake: China Girl’) and Naomi Watts (‘Twin Peaks: The Return’) battle at the Emmys?
Last year, Nicole Kidman beat her friend and “Big Little Lies” co-star and co-producer Reese Witherspoon for the Emmy. This year, she could defeat a pal again — but not just any ol’ buddy: her best friend Naomi Watts.

See Will Naomi Watts (‘Twin Peaks’) earn her first Emmy nomination 19 years after ‘Mulholland Drive’ was rejected as a pilot?

Since Watts’ breakthrough in 2001’s “Mulholland Drive,” the besties, who met on the 1991 film “Flirting,” have only been nominated against each other once for a major televised award: at the Critics’ Choice Awards for 2003’s “21 Grams” (Watts) and “Cold Mountain” (Kidman). They’ve had lots of
