Despite being overstuffed with Christmas sketches, there were few gifts to be found during this weekend’s Saturday Night Live.
James Franco returned to Studio 8H to promote The Disaster Artist, a movie based on The Room, one of the dumbest films ever made. Ironic, since so much of his latest hosting stint consisted of aggressively dumb material.
The evening got off to a rough start with the cold open, which featured a parade of kids struggling with cue cards and asking Kenan Thompson’s Mall Santa about Sen. Al Franken, Alabama senate candidate Roy Moore and ousted Today show host Matt Lauer.

It’s hard to determine what makes a film timeless, since films are like technology: they only improve as time moves forward. Great works of the past, whether they were westerns, comedies or science fiction, reside in a figurative Smithsonian, and deservedly so. That’s where paradigm-shifting, zeitgeist-infusing, thrill-inducing wonders belong after setting the stage for a new generation of movies. Movies that have eclipsed them in special effects, writing, acting, costumes, cinematography, set design, and direction. We don’t realize it because nostalgia clouds judgment even worse than the dark side. No one really acknowledges greatness until it’s far behind in the rear view mirror.
And yet, there are some things that remain as extraordinary as when they were invented. Sunglasses. In N Out. Game 7. Star Wars.

Miranda Lambert has new priorities these days.
The 33-year-old singer graces the November cover of Redbook magazine, where she opens up about life in the spotlight and the “three ‘M’s’ ” in her life.
“Music and mutts — pretty much all I live for are those two things,” Lambert says in her cover story. “Men used to be on that list, but I cut that one out.”
She adds: “Just kidding! It was the three M’s, and now it’s two. No, it is three: The last one is Miranda.”

Brad’s (Ben Stiller) son is about to embark on college. It’s the type of auspicious life marker to make anyone look back and question the journey they’ve taken thus far. Has Brad done enough? Lived up to the potential he felt he possessed? Or was he passed by? All of his old Tufts friends are rich, famous, successful, and/or happy—pure happiness unencumbered by the seemingly trivial struggles Brad faces daily. He isn’t poor, though. Nor destitute. If anything he’s on the cusp of breaking past middle class with loving wife (Jenna Fischer’s Melanie) and son (Austin Abrams’ Troy). We therefore can’t feasibly pity him and this film about his white privileged crisis knows it. Only one person could ever feel sorry for him: himself. And of course he does.
Welcome to Brad’s Status, the latest from writer/director Mike White.

The road to an actor's comeback is loaded with strife and hardship. Haley Joel Osment has had a good run as of late on his way back into the spotlight, but his latest feature is definitely one of those moments where he's like "Damn, why did my agent agree to this?"
Try as he might to get the most delicious smoothie imaginable, Osment is unsuccessful in getting all his trivia questions right and has to drink a smoothie that contains the following:
Almond MilkBlueberriesFermented KimchiHot Dog Flavored WaterBlueberry kissed by a man
The last one isn't really that bad, but I have a feeling the Above Average guys felt bad after dumping the kimchi and hot dog water in there and figured they'd give Osment a break. Check out the result and his reaction below. ...

Jared Anderson was a decorated high school English teacher at Judson High School, near San Antonio, Texas. In the 2015-2016 school year, he was even named “Teacher of the Year.”
But school officials found themselves working to recall yearbooks that noted such a honor after Anderson, 29, was arrested in March 2016 and accused of hosting sex parties for teenage boys.
He was indicted on multiple counts of sexual performance by a child and pleaded guilty last month to four counts of sexual performance by a child and two count of indecency with a child.
He was reportedly placed on leave following his indictment and later fired.

For centuries, man has suffered the indignity of sharknados, or storms full of sharks, occurring all around the planet. At least, that’s the dumb Transformers-level mythos being peddled by the trailer for Sharknado 5: Global Swarming, coming soon to a channel enough of you are apparently leaving on during these things to encourage Syfy to keep making them. What began as an ironically entertaining exercise in straight-faced silliness has devolved into a pandering slog of product placement, pointless cameos, and a sugar rush of ideas so poorly thought out, Herschell Gordon Lewis would go, “Hey, fellas, this needs a rewrite.” The last one sucked so bad, it couldn’t even be bothered to explain why we should suddenly give a shit about the extended family of Ian Ziering’s Finley Shepard. It’s safe to say that Quentin Tarantino is not happy about Tuesday’s breaking news that his next almost-finished untitled script is based on the true history of the Charles Manson murders. That’s because the writer-director, who is one of Hollywood’s great true auteurs with a unique voice that is inimitable, likes to write his screenplays in private.
Tarantino is an artist, backed by patrons Bob and Harvey Weinstein, who has routinely turned down big-studio directing gigs in order to pursue his own muse. And he can be sensitive to the slings and arrows of public opinion. That’s because he wants to leave a meaningful cinematic legacy of just 10 films. So while he could always change his mind (as Steven Soderbergh did) about his career path, Tarantino does not take lightly his choice of what those last two films will be. (The last one might be “Kill Bill: Vol. 3,...

Earlier tonight, CBS finally aired the premiere episode of its new Big Brother season 19. It started out by showing the usual introduction footage of the cast. They started with the first group of 8 houseguests. Afterwards, they sent them into the house. Next, they featured the second group of houseguests and sent them into the house. Everyone was very excited as they usually are on the very first day. They introduced themselves to each other and did that whole thing. After that, Julie Chen called them to the living room to eventually remind them that this is a game for a whopping $500,000 and that it starts right now. She gave them instructions about a new game that would involve a major twist. It was pretty simple. Basically, they were all seated in front of a electronic tree or plant. Once it lit up, they had the option to press a button they were given.

Jason Statham is one of those actors that film fans have grown to appreciate over the years. The man’s an action star almost in the vein of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, but he never seems to get caught in the trap of taking himself too seriously (If you haven’t yet, you need to check out his hilarious performance in Spy). He knows what audiences want to see out of him, and he embraces it wholeheartedly.
If you need any more evidence backing up that statement, then you need look no further than one of his upcoming films, Meg. The movie is set to be directed by Jon Turtletaub (National Treasure, and more importantly, 3 Ninjas), and is based on a Steve Alten novel of the same name.
Speaking with Jim Norton and Sam Roberts on the Jim & Sam Show, Statham gave some brief insight into the flick:
“I just did a movie about a shark.

Several years ago, Mark Harris began feeling a little self-conscious about a gap in his film-history knowledge. As a journalist for Entertainment Weekly, New York Magazine and the late, lamented Web site Grantland, among others, he'd covered the waterfront of contemporary moviemaking. As an author, his book Pictures at a Revolution dissected the moment in the late 1960s when the last gasp of the Golden Age studio system gave way to what become known as "New Hollywood." Ask him about the works of legends like, say, John Ford and Frank Capra,...

Mick Jackson has lived through several chapters of his directorial career. His background was television, in particular the stunning Threads, and his classy adaptation of Chris Mullins’ A Very British Coup. Then he went to Hollywood, directing the likes of L.A. Story, The Bodyguard and Volcano.
He’s been away from cinema for a while, courtesy of some intriguing television projects. But he returns to the big screen this weekend with Denial, a classy courtroom drama that brings the story of Holocaust denier David Irving’s infamous libel action to the cinema. We snagged a chat with him ahead of its release, with the promise of further conversation about his 90s output at a later date too.
Can you talk us through this particular film, and why you wanted to bring it to the big screen?...

If you paid attention to movie blogs like this one during the production of Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, you'll know Snyder is a big fan of Star Wars. Not only did he reportedly pitch his own standalone film to Lucasfilm a while back, but while making Bvs, he and The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams had some fun going back and forth with strange crossover images that combined imagery from both franchises. It all started when Snyder posted an image of Henry Cavill as a Sith Lord, Abrams fired back with C-3Po as the Dark Knight, we then got an image of Batman with R2-D2, followed by The Gotham City Police arresting a Stormtrooper. The last one came from Abrams sticking a Batmobile on the bottom of the Millennium Falcon.
Now Snyder has posted a fun video that actually combines imagery from the Star Wars...

After the first week of critics’ groups announcing their picks, we have a trifecta of Oscar frontrunners: Amazon/Roadside’s “Manchester by the Sea,” A24’s “Moonlight,” and Lionsgate’s “La La Land.” These are the same films that triumphed on the fall film festival circuit, benefitting from the slow and steady drumbeat of media attention as well as relentless awards campaigning.
Among those that found no love from critics were the late arrivals: Ben Affleck’s “Live By Night,” Martin Scorsese’s “Silence,” Weinstein Co.’s “The Founder” and “Gold,” and Peter Berg’s “Patriots Day” were shutouts. Snubs met veteran Oscar winners Robert Zemeckis, Ang Lee, Warren Beatty, and Oliver Stone, while Clint Eastwood’s “Sully” and Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” are still in play.

Last week we saw the group say good bye to the Malibu mansion. This week's installment, The Last Man on Earth Season 3 Episode 4, has them heading north to San Francisco.

You really can't blame her for hitting the bottle so early in the day. Todd's been so caught up with Melissa, Gail relapsed and packed Gordon.
Todd tries to explain but on cue Melissa runs by, allegedly training for whatever is out there. The point blank way January Jones delivers her lines gets better each week. I enjoyed watching her run back and forth as Todd and Gail fought.

Four new wide studio releases open Friday, but they promise a weekend of meh. Three are sequels — “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” (Paramount), “Boo: A Madea Halloween,” and “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (Universal) — and will likely fall in the mid-teen millions or slightly higher. The lone original, 20th Century Fox’s “Keeping Up With the Joneses,” likely won’t reach even $10 million.
The Top 10 total should match the $91 million of last year. That’s not an impressive figure, but it’s enough to halt the decline of recent weeks. And, the four films have relatively modest budgets; their domestic takes and/or foreign appeal should keep the red ink from staining.

In my opinion, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the most talented young actors working in Hollywood right now. He's a very likable guy who tends to make great films. His next film project is a sci-fi thriller called Sovereign.
According to THR, the actor will take on the role of a man "who travels up to a space station to find his estranged wife and the crew of the station, all of whom have gone missing." We don't really have much more information than that.
The movie is being produced by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), and it will be directed by Marc Munden, who has helmed several TV series such as Black Sails, Utopia, and Quantico. The script for the film comes from Jack Thorne, the playwright behind the recently released Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Sovereign sounds like it could turn out to be a great film project.

Ever since the first photo was released, there's been a lot of discussion over why the actors are dressed the way they are. Specifically, the outfit that Karen Gillan is wearing. She already took to Twitter to tease why she is wearing that outfit, saying:
"Jumanji! Yes I'm wearing child sized clothes and Yes there is a reason! The pay off is worth it, I promise!"
I'm not one to make a big fuss over these kinds of skimpy outfits since I grew up on Jim Lee and J. Scott Campbell comic books as well as playing Tomb Raider. Anyway, a new bit of info has surfaced that sheds some more light on the plot and what Gillan was talking about. The info comes from a recent tweet from Mashable reporter Jeff Sneider that says:

During his ten seasons on the NBC hit comedy Friends, David Schwimmer made oodles of cash and earned an Emmy nomination for playing the frequently lovelorn Ross Geller. But the actor, who is up for another Emmy for his role as Robert Kardashian on the FX drama The People v. O.J. Simpson, explains that with the overnight fame and immense wealth from Friends came a lot of stress in his personal life. "It was pretty jarring and it messed with my relationship to other people in a way that took years, I think, for me to adjust to,” Schwimmer told THR.com. “The effect of celebrity was the absolute opposite. It made me want to hide under a baseball cap and not be seen.” At its height, Friends would routinely draw 20+ million weekly viewers, with two episodes ("The One After the Superbowl" and “The Last One”) attracting more than 52 million fans.

As Gotham season 2 arrives in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray, we chatted to Sean Pertwee about Alfred, action scenes, and season 3...
Contains spoilers for Gotham season 2.
At a posh London hotel back in June, I sat down for ten minutes with Mr Sean Pertwee to discuss all things Alfred Pennyworth. Gotham season 2’s DVD release was around the corner, and season 3’s arrival was a little further down the road.
Pertwee – sporting a V-neck and, thanks to a considerable amount of jewellery, the air of a pirate - proved to be a generous interviewee, very open to disclosing ideas he has about the show, including many that haven’t yet come to fruition. We also spoke about how his performance led to the writers penning him more action scenes, and the idea of Gotham crossing over with the myriad other DC Comics shows on TV.

Radiohead’s weekly sharing of artist-created vignettes has almost come to an end. Since the release of their album, “A Moon Shaped Pool,” the band has shared short films for each of their tracks on Instagram. The last one was for the song “The Numbers,” directed by Grant Gee and filmed in Port Talbot.
Now, to conclude this artistic production, Radiohead is asking fans to help finish the project by giving them a chance to create their own short film for “Daydreaming.” The group shared a new one-minute audio of the song, which features new strings that weren’t included in the original, to download and “complete Radiohead’s series of vignettes.”
“Download the music on the link an submit your video with the hashtag #RHVignette on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. Radiohead will select their favorite and post on Radiohead.com,” states the announcement on their site.

It's been a good decade since Mel Gibson has released a film he's directed. The last one he put out in theaters was 2006's Apocalypto, and after that movie came the great scandal that effectively pushed him out of the spotlight for a good while. Gibson worked as an actor on a handful of films since then, but it isn't until recently that he's started to really head back into the industry. His latest directorial feature, Hacksaw Ridge is getting a release from Lionsgate later this year, but it sounds like Gibson may be heading back to the director's chair sooner rather than later following that film's release.
According to THR, Gibson and Braveheart writer Randall Wallace are working on a sequel to his 2004 film, The Passion Of The Christ, which will chronicle Jesus' resurrection.
"I always wanted to tell this story," Wallace told THR. "The Passion is the beginning...

From Left to Right Tara Karsian and Andrea Grano
A few days ago I had the chance to talk to Tara Karsian and Andrea Grano about their upcoming film BFFs, which is out today on iTunes, Amazon, Brighthouse, Comcast Xfinity, Cox, and Time Warner.
The film two straight friends who go into couples therapy, they're so convincing that even they start to question their relationship.
Here is what Tara Karsian and Andrea Grano had to say about the film, which they both wrote and star in.
Tara, the question for you, Pat Carroll is your mom, correct? She's in the movie. What is it like working with your mother on onfilm, and would you do it again?
Tara Karsian: Never again. No I'm kidding, it was wonderful and we have never gotten to do that. The back story is that Andrea actually wrote her in, I did not, so it's only Andrea's fault.

Frank Langella is an imposing figure. Standing 6'4" tall, with a countenance absolutely befitting a man who has played both Dracula and Richard Nixon, the man simply looks like a force to be reckoned with. His sense of gravitas demands attention and respect. All of which makes what he does in Manhattan Theater Club's Tony-nominated production of Florian Zeller's play The Father even more impressive.
Langella plays André, an elderly man living in Paris with his daughter, Anne (Kathryn Erbe). At the start of the play, Anne is explaining why she has to get him a new helper: The last one apparently quit after André called her "a little bitch" and threatened her with a curtain rod. For his part, André at first denies the incident, then laughs it off, saying that he is perfectly competent to care for himself.
And here is where talking about the play gets difficult.

Ang Lee reached the top of the mountain again in 2012 when his last film, Life Of Pi, was a critical smash that sparked the imaginations of fans and fellow filmmakers alike. Jon Favreau credited the film with inspiring him to make the current global hit The Jungle Book. Lee, who has a resumé that also includes beloved films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain, looks to be at it again with Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk.
The film seemingly takes place entirely in the mind of its titular character, as he walks across the field during a halftime celebration at a football game. In the trailer below, you'll see how we start in the present and then, as he takes his first steps, we go into a series of flashbacks that explain how he got here, and why this walk is so monumental.

As you may already know, artist Greg Capullo recently ended his run on Batman with Scott Snyder last week. As a way to pay tribute to Capullo’s work on the comic, artist Rick Celis recreated all of the cover art that was created for the Batman comics Capello worked on and reimagined them in the style of Batman: The Animated Series. I’ve included some of my favorite pieces below, but to see the full collection of them, click here.

There are two kinds of mistakes you can make, Chicago Fire‘s Chief Boden explains in this NBC sneak peek — one of which can be avoided if you simply follow orders, which someone has failed to do.

Wounded veteran Kirstie Ennis has never hidden from her awful injuries and her tough post-war journey. Now she is sharing more of herself than ever before. In a series she calls her "body image project," Ennis, 25, spotlights her road to recovery as an amputee in a series of striking poses. The last one, shown exclusively to People to unveil the final stage of her post-op body, sees her with the prosthetic leg with which she first walked in February. Flamingo
Events took a dramatic twist yesterday when a film screening at the Glasgow Short Film Festival shocked viewers so much that two of them fainted. Bryan M Ferguson's Flamingo, which was screening in the Skinny Short Film Competition in support of his award-winning Caustic Gulp, led to one person becoming instantly unconscious whilst another became so pale and limp as to require urgent assistance.
Eye For Film's Andrew Robertson, who described the film as 'visceral', said that the woman behind him reacted so dramatically to what was shown onscreen that he was afraid she was going to throw up on his coat.
Flamingo, which stars Katie Armstrong, Stascia Bantouvakis, Kristopher Curran and Joanne Pirrie, tells the story of an aspiring dancer who befriends an obscene phone caller after they discover a mutual interest in self-amputation.
Fortunately, audience reactions as dramatic as this are rare. The last one we're aware of.

You may not have even noticed her, but Carrie Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd did indeed have a small role in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens as one of General Leia's trusted Lieutenants named Connix. She even had some dialogue too, as Connix was the character that asked “General, are you seeing this?” as Leia watched from her command center. Not exactly a meaty part, but Lourd has confirmed to /Film that she will return to reprise the role for Rian Johnson's currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VIII while being interviewed at Playfest. When asked if she would have more to do this time, the actress replied “Oh yeah, yeah. The last one was a little Where’s Waldo-y.” Lourd also hinted that shed be sharing more scenes with Fisher - which makes sense of course, since she is one of Leia's Resistance fighters. Star Wars: Episode VIII...

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is just around the corner. But if everything falls into place, Warner Bros. has a slate of superhero movies planned out until 2020. The last one on that list? Green Lantern Corps. And if you’re going to have a gaggle of Green Lanterns, you’re gonna need someone to play the role of John Stewart. D.B. Woodside knows just the guy…him. Last year at San Diego Comic-Con, Woodside was on hand to talk about his role as Amenadiel on the Fox show Lucifer. But he was trying to send DC Comics subtle message by sporting his Green Lantern graphic tee. Why play an angel when you can play Lantern (or play both)? Woodside recently revisited his dream to play John Stewart in a Lucifer interview by Comic Book Resources. “I grew up as a comic-book guy, so I love these characters. We're living...

Those hoping the upcoming "Jason Bourne" will serve as a glorious rekindling of the 'Bourne' franchise after the stumble of "The Bourne Legacy," think again.
In a new interview with EW, star Matt Damon says the upcoming Paul Greengrass-directed film won't serve as refresh so much as a footnote to the first three films - effectively ending Jason Bourne's story. Speaking about his character's arc for the new film, Damon says:
"He's living with the same things as he was before, and then he goes to find Julia Stiles' character, who basically says, 'Just because you remember everything, doesn't mean you know everything.' So you find him in a place that's dark and unresolved.
This is the completion of this journey that started in the Bourne Identity. It's part of the first three [movies], it's not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we're not saying it's the conclusion,...

Believe it or not, it's been a good while since we've had a proper Disney animated film. The last one was Big Hero 6, and that came out way back in November of 2014. Needless to say, we're completely overdue, and Zootopia is only a short couple months away.
So far, Zootopia has had an interesting run of trailers. The first "teaser" was an unnecessary explanation of what the world was (as if a world full of talking animals was suddenly hard to understand), and the first official "trailer" wasn't so much a trailer as much as it was an extended scene from the movie (though it was a funny one). The second trailer was much more in-keeping with the typical trailer tradition, but it seemed to try just a bit too hard to tug on the heartstrings for my taste.

Brock Lesnar returned to Raw on Monday and confirmed he’ll be entering the Royal Rumble. Furthermore, he attacked Roman Reigns, in a segment that could be foreshadowing a rematch between the pair at WrestleMania 32.
The storyline is that Paul Heyman was negotiating with the McMahon family to have Brock in the main event of WrestleMania, but Stephanie McMahon told him that she wanted Brock in the Royal Rumble match.
Later in the show, Roman Reigns was contesting a “one versus all” match in the Raw main event. This was another attempt by The Authority to undermine the WWE Champion, and Reigns was having to work against numerous heels who lined up at ringside. The majority of it was just Reigns against Kevin Owens.
Eventually, everyone at ringside piled in to attack Reigns, and that’s when Lesnar’s music hit.
The Beast destroyed the heels, sending them scurrying to the back.
