“Oh, baby, let the bad times roll,” the Offspring sing on the title track to their new album, resigning themselves to a world in peril. It’s the stalwart California punk band’s first studio LP in nearly a decade, and their first for Concord after a lengthy run on Capitol, but the label change and the departure of their longtime bassist haven’t blunted the Offspring’s edge. Working with producer Bob Rock (Metallica), they set doom-and-gloom lyrics (as heard on the shrug-emoji title track and the prescient “This...

Mando! Yes, The Mandalorian, the flagship Disney+ program, is back with Season Two. Last season, the show was a smash hit, showcasing Star Wars not just on the small screen, but as a streaming service property. This new manner of taking in the iconic franchise didn’t just blow people away, it started a cultural hallmark with The Child / Baby Yoda. Now, last week brought the return of the show, cementing it as one of the great series out there. Read on for a bit more about Season Two, but honestly, everyone is already watching, I’m sure of it. Still, we press on and help fan the flames even more! As I’ve previously said, when The Mandalorian came to Disney+ last year, it was, arguably, a shock to most how great it was. Sure, there was no doubt that Disney and Lucasfilm would waste no expense in their...

Billie Eilish can check another thing off of her bucket list.
Ahead of the Oscars on Sunday, the singer, 18, opened up about contributing her vocals to Daniel Craig‘s final James Bond film, No Time to Die, and how surreal it’s been to work on the project with her brother Finneas O’Connell.
“Yes, we’ve written it,” she told host Billy Porter on ABC’s Oscars red carpet pre-show. “It’s already done.”
“It’s crazy, dude,” added Eilish, who will be taking the stage at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday evening to perform during the “In Memoriam” segment.

Five years before Luke Perry joined the class of “90210,” the young actor had another school-themed role: he was a jean-jacket clad, MTV-shirt wearing extra in the video for Twisted Sister’s 1985 single “Be Chrool to Your Scuel.” The song was from 1985’s “Come Out and Play” album, the less-successful followup to the 1984 album “Stay Hungry,” featuring the breakout hits “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock.”
MTV refused to air the “Be Chrool to Your Scuel” video, objecting to scenes of zombie violence, despite playing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video. However, singer Dee Snider believes the ban was due to his outspokenness against the lobbying group Parents Music Resource Center.
In the clip, an unknown Perry — who morphs into a zombie along with the other “student” extras — interacted with ‘80s star power: Alice Cooper sings and acts with Snider, while cast as the teacher was Bobcat Goldthwait,...

Come out and play? Okay, we will! It: Chapter One's Pennywise might be the stuff of nightmares, but underneath all the makeup, hair and fangs, the real-life actor who plays the menacing clown, Bill Skarsgård, could be in a boy band with those dreamy good looks. So now that we know that (and you do too), here are 5 reasons why it's okay for you (and the rest of the world) to think that the creepy clown is a total undercover hottie: 1. He's Swedish: The 27-year-old actor was born in Vällingby, Sweden, which means he's Swedish—which means he's got a cool accent. This may be the only time we'd swap a Swedish fish for a Swedish clown. 2. He's Still...

Child birth is one of life’s beautiful miracles (depending on who you ask), as the female body houses, nurtures, and creates a human life all through mystical biological magic – with some help from a male counterpart. Hey, someone has to plant the seed, ladies! Essentially, it’s like men are gardeners whose only job is to come in and drop a few seeds into the soil, working for one night (sure ladies, go ahead and insert a joke here about how long your man lasts), but then a female gardener replaces the male and tends to the field for the next nine months. Ladies, you have my undying respect for the amazing feats you’re able to accomplish, because I can’t even manage living my life with the tiniest stomach ache – let alone the feeling of having another life growing inside me.

The dirty devils of Harlan County’s underworld hollers are always going to jail, and that’s not always a good thing for lawman Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) and Justified. Over the course of its four seasons, the FX drama has routinely sent its winning corps of low-life losers to the clink, including its most magnetic menace, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), as well as weedy gimp Dickie Bennett (Jeremy Davies) and Raylan’s bad daddy Arlo (Raymond Barry), who met his final fate there. Every time the show sends its troublemakers to the big house, I start counting the minutes...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Mexico, 2012
The remake debate rages on in the world of film to this very day. Although at this point it’s not much of a debate, the majority of film lovers have had enough of remakes. While that is a respectable position, it’s not an argument that holds up to any intense scrutiny. The landscape of film has always been built upon unoriginal projects. Whether it’s a remake, an adaptation, a sequel, or a prequel has no actual bearing on the quality of the film. What matters is what the people behind the film put into its production. Come Out and Play is a remake, as well as an adaptation of a novel,¿Quién puede matar a un niño?. Such practicalities aside, what matters most is whether the movie’s any good. Specifically: does Come Out and Play...

Come Out and Play moves pretty quickly and its entirely unforgiving in key sequences. I loved the finale of the film which some might find inappropriate or offensive. I found it rather gratifying its the way a picture of this nature should end and the only reasonable conclusion to reach. There are enough shining moments in this picture to keep viewers attuned to the screen and even at over 100 minutes runtime its over before you know it.

New Indie of the Month There are any number of reasons for horror buffs to check out Come Out and Play (Flatiron Film Company). For one thing, it’s a remake of the creepy Spanish cult flick Who Can Kill a Child, a pre–Children of the Corn B movie about tourists on an island inhabited entirely by homicidal kids. What also makes Come Out and Play so compelling is its mysterious provenance; it’s directed by someone who goes by the name Makinov, and this filmmaker wears a mask not just in personal appearances and interviews but even on the set as well. Whatever Makinov is doing, it’s working; this movie was produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna’s production company, and the cast’s adults include Vinessa Shaw (Eyes Wide Shut), Ebon...

I grew up in the 1980s, when serial killers stalking summer camps defined the horror genre: Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, Cheerleader Camp, The Burning. So to me, the Great Horror Campout was a long time coming.
Billed as an “immersive experience,” the Great Horror Campout is a 12-hour, overnight “camping trip” that puts you in the middle of the horrors that lurk in the woods. I do not like camping and I do not like wilderness, so I doubt that I could make it through the actual event. When I was offered a preview of the experience in a climate-controlled warehouse, I jumped at the chance.
Myself and a half-dozen journalists were asked to meet in Griffith Park in the heart of Los Angeles - already a scary proposition. Griffith Park is a massive state park built into the mountain, so there are lots of winding, multi-layered roads, none of which have names.

Mononymous writer-director Makinov’s 2012 thriller “Come Out and Play” only works if you could never in your wildest dreams consider killing a kid if your life was in serious danger. Call me cold and callous, but I’d chuck a child into the nearest river if the nasty little brat was attempting to murder me. Although I’m sure the act would likely cause serious emotional damage, but when it comes to survival, even a five-year-old boy isn’t above getting crushed when push comes to shove. If you found any part of this opening passage to be offensive, then chances are “Come Out and Play” is going to give you nightmares for decades. Makinov’s movie is a retelling of director Narciso Ibanez Serrador’s 1976 shocker “Who Can Kill a Child?” Unfortunately, the filmmaker doesn’t do anything remarkably different with the material. It’s just the same old thing with brand new faces.

The Belarusian director of Come Out and Play (2012) - released on DVD on 6 May - is something of an eccentric figure. I'm So Excited (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2012, Spa) Javier Cámara, Raúl Arévalo, Carlos Areces. 90 mins
Almodóvar responds to his country's economic woes with camp hysteria and Carry On humour. In many ways this airborne disaster farce – anarchic, absurdist, garishly stylish and gleefully debauched – is a return to the Spanish auteur's subversive roots. But there's a serious subtext to the silliness, and the metaphors are brought back down to earth for a satisfying landing.
The Eye Of The Storm (15)
(Fred Schepisi, 2011, Aus) Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis. 119 mins
The imminent death of Rampling's matriarch throws an aristocratic family's dysfunction into relief in this Aussie drama, whose overstuffed story is redeemed by three watchable leads.

The Impossible
Making a film of any real-life disaster is a thankless task filled with pitfalls. Indeed, the title here could just as easily apply to the actual task of production. The decision to tell this story from the point of view of a holidaying western family trying to survive the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami drew criticism that it ignored the thousands of local lives that were destroyed. But their story is as valid as anyone's; this isn't, as was suggested many times, mere "grief tourism". Besides, without the star power of Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor it's unlikely it would have been made at all, certainly not with a budget that allows such terrifying spectacle – the tsunami itself, and the devastation it wreaks – in the form of some incredibly realistic effects work.

What with the recent Evil Dead and Maniac adaptations, it seems that horror remakes are all the range at present, and now the conspicuously named Makinov has offered his own take on the 1976 Spanish feature Who Can Kill a Child? Though the filmmakers very own mysterious presence is even more chilling than the film that he has created – as he directs from behind a mask, with his identity unwaveringly sealed.
We delve into the lives of a happily married couple, Francis (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and his pregnant wife Beth (Vinessa Shaw), who when on holiday together in Mexico, decide to venture out to a beautiful, remote island for a few days, hoping to catch up with some alone time before the birth of their first child. ★★☆☆☆ The Belarus-born director of new horror Come Out and Play (2012) is something of an eccentric figure. After a near-death experience whilst shooting a documentary on Huichol shamanism in Mexico, he forged himself a new identity; Makinov (no first name required). He now only appears clad in a red hood, meaning that both the public and his collaborators are left none the wiser about the man behind the mask. With reinvention and mystery vital parts of his new persona, it's fitting that both elements play a crucial role in his directorial debut, a remake of Narciso Ibáñez Serrador's cult classic Who Can Kill a Child? The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

I recently saw a screening of the excellent home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next and, for reasons which will become abundantly clear when the film hits cinemas on August 23, have had the Dwight Twilley Band’s why-was-this-never-a-hit? soft-rock classic “Looking For the Magic” on repeat in my head ever since. The movie’s first trailer features no Twilley — making highly ironic use of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” instead — and gives little indication as to the darkly hilarious nature of director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett’s film. But the clip does accurately tease the large amount of nerve-rending...

There's something about children that makes their addition to horror films so creepy. Perhaps it's got to do with the inherent innocence that each child has, having not yet been corrupted or jaded by life's callousness and disappointments. They have nothing but happiness, hope and wonder ahead of them. Or at least they should. But what if they didn't? What if some children, under that guise of innocence and purity, harbored a cold-blooded and murderous apathy?
There are a handful of great horror films in what I call the "Creepy Kid" subgenre: The Shining (remember the twins?), The Exorcist, The Bad Seed, The Omen, The Ring and a 1976 Spanish film called Who Can Kill A Child? In that one, an English couple on the verge of parenthood travels to a secluded island for vacation and find...

Today's batch of new MPAA ratings brings a little bit of everything beginning with the awful Aftershock, which I saw, reviewed and hated at the Toronto Film Festival last year. That is followed by my most anticipated film of the year, Before Midnight, which I am actually working with Sony Classics right now to bring you a rather cool feature this May. Also included is the sci-fi feature Europa Report starring Sharlto Copley, Scary Movie 5 and two Sundance acquisitions in The Way, Way Back and Alex Gibney's documentary We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks. Like I said, a little bit of everything. Below is the complete batch of latest MPAA ratings from Bulletin #2265. Aftershock Rated R For strong bloody violence including rape, language, drug content and some nudity. Release Date: Tba 2013 Baby Geniuses: Treasures Of Egypt Rated G Before Midnight Rated R For sexual content/nudity and language.

In the new horror movie Come Out and Play a holidaying couple, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Lola Versus) and Vinessa Shaw (2006’s The Hills Have Eyes), visit an island off the coast of Mexico where they discover the local children have murdered the adults. But the most bizarre aspect of the film, which began its platform release on March 22 and is currently available on VOD, is the identity of its director, who goes by the mono-moniker of “Makinov” and refuses to reveal his face or real name.
Come out and Play debuted last September at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.

2012, Mexico
Narciso Ibañez Serrador’s 1976 cult classic Who Can Kill a Child?, a film adapted from Juan Jose Plans’s novel, is arguably one of the best Spanish horror films ever made. Due to haphazard distribution and saddled with a number of other titles (including Island of the Damned and Death is Child’s Play), Serrador’s film barely surfaced. Despite the limited exposure, the film acquired a devoted following. Horror aficionados passed around bootleg VHS copies and occasionally the film would appear on late night television until it would receive an uncut release on DVD in 2007.
Come Out and Play is the English-language remake of that film, helmed by Makinov, the elusive director who refuses to disclose his true identity. He began his career as a focus puller in Russia, and later traveled to Mexico to direct documentary films on Huichol shamanism.

Title: Come Out and Play Director: Makinov Starring: Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vinessa Shaw, Daniel Giménez Cacho There’s a unique, chilly vibe that hangs over “Come Out and Play,” an unnerving, humid slice of elemental horror that definitely has nothing to do with the old song of the same name by the Offspring. Summoning up disparate recollections of George Romero, “Children of the Corn” and even, fleetingly, Michelangelo Antonioni’s “The Passenger,” this artful genre entry works the mind like a punching bag before finally playing a hand that, narratively, isn’t as much of a winner. The odd story behind this film (dedicated to the martyrs of Stalingrad!) and its singularly named anonymous director, [ Read More ]
