Everyone of a certain age has a core memory of the iconic “Brat Pack,” even those born after their heyday. But what about the group itself? On June 13, 2024, that is the question that Hulu’s “Brats” asks as actor and director Andrew McCarthy interviews fellow Brat Packers Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Jon Cryer, Timothy Hutton and Lea Thompson.
Centering on 1980s films starring the “Brat Pack” and their profound impact on the young stars’ lives, “Brats” is certified fresh with a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The term was notably coined by New York Magazine writer David Blum (it wasn’t a compliment), who was hoping to gain attention in the journalism world. And yes, he is confronted in the film. Read our full review round-up below.

It’s often hard to pinpoint the precise origin of a cultural phenomenon. The opposite is true when it comes to Hollywood’s Brat Pack. The catchy moniker that came to define the ’80s cineplex can be traced to June 10, 1985, when New York Magazine published a cover story pegged to the release of “St. Elmo’s Fire.” The piece, written by David Blum, followed three of the film’s stars — Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe and Judd Nelson — over several nights of heavy boozing and douchey antics, like ogling Playmates, encouraging groupies and trash-talking their rivals. Blum dubbed the group of young movie stars the “Brat Pack,” a phrase still recognizable four decades later.

Andrew McCarthy, creator of the Hulu documentary Brats, has Molly Ringwald to thank for his breakout role in Pretty in Pink. Here’s how she pushed for McCarthy to get the signature role over another well-known actor.
Molly Ringwald campaigned for Andrew McCarthy to get a ‘Pretty in Pink’ role
Molly Ringwald had signed on to star in Pretty in Pink as Andie. The 1986 film was written specifically for her by John Hughes. Previously, Ringwald starred in Hughes’ films Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club.
However, while the the role of Andie’s love interest, Blaine, was originally set to be offered to Charlie Sheen, Ringwald campaigned hard for McCarthy to get the role. In the book You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried, Ringwald convinced the filmmaker to hire Andrew McCarthy, whose previous credits include the films Class, Heaven Help Us, and St. Elmo’s Fire. The Brat Pack was a group of young actors who rose to fame in movies such as Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo’s Fire, and The Breakfast Club. In the documentary Brats, filmmaker Andrew McCarthy spoke to this group of celebrities, whose lives were forever changed by the title. However, one of its most recognizable faces, Molly Ringwald didn’t appear in the film. Here’s why.
Why didn’t Molly Ringwald appear in ‘Brats?’
The documentary Brats looks back at the “Brat Pack” moniker and its impact on a select group of actors. It explores the narrative that took hold of their lives once the phrase was coined.
However, one of the era’s biggest stars was conspicuously absent from those who appeared in the documentary; Molly Ringwald. She was the star of Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club and an icon for millions of movie fans worldwide.

Andrew McCarthy‘s Brats documentary is a nostalgic trip down memory lane as he looks back at the iconic Brat Pack. However, there are two notable members of the group missing from the documentary: Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson. Ringwald and Nelson are synonymous with the Brat Pack. Ringwald starred in Brat Pack hits like Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink. Nelson starred alongside Ringwald in The Breakfast Club and appeared with more Brat Packers in St. Elmo’s Fire. So, why are Ringwald and Nelson missing from the Brats documentary, except for archival footage? McCarthy’s Pretty in Pink co-star Jon Cryer asks him during their discussion if he’s spoken to Ringwald. McCarthy says he’s reached out to Ringwald about participating. “She said she’d think about it, but that she would probably just like to keep looking forward.” Cryer acknowledges that Ringwald wants...

In June 1985, a young group of talented actors was ready to take the world by storm as the release of Joel Schumacher‘s “St. Elmo’s Fire” approached. Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, and Demi Moore had already done fine work in other films both together and apart, but “St. Elmo’s Fire” was the best showcase any of them had ever gotten, in an era when youth movies were better and more numerous than they had ever been before. Nothing stood in the way of their becoming the next generation of great American screen actors — except for a New York magazine writer named David Blum.
Blum spent a night out with Estevez and several of his friends for what was supposed to be a simple profile of the actor but turned into a cover story in which the journalist dubbed the entire group the “Brat Pack...

Actor Andrew McCarthy’s documentary looks at his time in 80s Hollywood and the pitfalls of living underneath a label
If you’ve ever affectionately referred to Andrew McCarthy and his acting cohort as “the Brat Pack”, just know that they hated that label, which was coined in an infamous and arguably dismissive New York Magazine cover story. That’s what his new documentary, Brats, lays out before turning into something else: an opportunity for McCarthy to catch up with the audience and embrace how the term Brat Pack embalmed them in a seismic and precious pop-cultural moment.
Brats is a personal journey, with camera in tow, for the actor who played the gentle but daft heartthrob opposite Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink and the forlorn one in the brattiest ensemble of them all, St Elmo’s Fire. The audience rides shotgun as McCarthy reunites with fellow Brat Packers like Emilio Estevez,...

During a bit of small talk, an anonymous cashier mishears director Andrew McCarthy’s explanation of the project he’s working on: “The Rat Pack?” The Brat Pack, McCarthy corrects. “That sounds familiar,” replies the younger man in the polite tone of someone who has no idea what you’re talking about.
It’s a throwaway moment in the film, but one that gets at the good-natured humility that makes the whole thing tick. The marketable hook of Brats is that it’s a documentary about the (in)famous 1980s young Hollywood cohort, helmed by one of its own. What makes it truly compelling, however, is its willingness to step outside that perspective and reconsider the phenomenon from a broader context with the wisdom of age.

The Brat Pack has been through a lot, but time has only strengthened their offscreen friendships.
While discussing Andrew McCarthy’s new Brats documentary at its Tribeca Film Festival premiere on Friday, Jon Cryer had some less-than-fond memories of his Pretty in Pink (1986) co-star.
“When we made Pretty in Pink, we didn’t get along because he was a d***,” said Cryer on a panel Friday with McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, and Demi Moore, according to Entertainment Weekly.
McCarthy admitted to Cryer, “That’s very true,” as Moore disagreed. “Well I didn’t think he was a d***,” she said.
“Well he wasn’t a d*** to you,” Cryer quipped to Moore, whom he dated while working on their 1984 movie, No Small Affair.

Hulu’s recent Bon Jovi Documentary has reignited an interest in the music of the 80s and 90s. Now, Brats, Andrew McCarthy’s new Brat Pack documentary promises to delve into the movies of the 80s and a group of actors known as The Brat Pack.
Andrew McCarthy Brat Pack – YouTube Who Coined The Phrase ‘The Brat Pack’?
Before the phrase “The Brat Pack,” actors such as Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez were actors. However, after that monicker, their lives changed. This happened in 1985 when New York Magazine writer David Blum decided to make a play on the “Rat Pack.” This trio consisted of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., a group considered the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Although this was a clever label, it wound up haunting many actors in this group. That is because their livelihood as actors was negatively affected by this label.

‘Brats’ Director Andrew McCarthy On How The Initially “Horrible” Brat Pack Label Became “A Blessing”
At the Tribeca Festival world premiere of Brats, actor-turned-director Andrew McCarthy said the Brat Pack Label, which he had “received as horrible,” turned into a “blessing.”
That unlikely arc was actually what compelled him to make the film, McCarthy said Friday night during a post-screening Q&a. “I turned 60 last year, and you start to look at your life a little differently,” he said. “I looked back at this seminal moment in my past, that I’d been dragging around for so many years, and it seemed frozen in the past. And I wanted to bring it up into my present. And by examining it, I could sort of honor it. And if I honored it, it started to turn into a blessing. And then I was fascinated by the journey.”

What are we to make of the fact that Andrew McCarthy’s first effort as a documentary filmmaker is a bitter excoriation of the Brat Pack tag that defined him — and is also ostentatiously named after it?
It would be just ducky to be able to report that “Brats” is the inside deep-dive we might wish it to be. But really, it’s a lightly-indulgent passion project that leaves us wanting so much more.
McCarthy begins by noting frankly that “we were who you wanted to hang with, who you envied, who you wanted to party with.” The “we,” of course, also refers to Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore and Rob Lowe, as well as Pack-adjacent stars like James Spader, Lea Thompson and Jon Cryer. Before we can delve into what made the Brat Pack films great, we must define them.
There are varying opinions about which movies are actual Brat Pack films.

Most people seem to agree that to be considered a Brat Pack film, a movie had to come out between 1983 and 1990 and include at least two Brat Pack actors.
The only problem is that everyone's list of Brat Pack actors seems different.
Journalist David Blum coined the phrase "Brat Pack" in his 1985 article,...

Image Source: Universal Picture Home Entertainment In the 1980s, writer/director John Hughes‘ films became a part of movie pop culture. The films defined a young generation of audiences, relating to the teen angst and issues explored in the movies. Along with those movies, they also turned Molly Ringwald into a movie star. Ringwald worked with Hughes on three films, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink (Hughes wrote it). Their collaboration was beloved. Each of these films had an impact on not only audiences but on Ringwald personally and professionally. Hughes’ impact is still felt today, with new audiences being introduced to the films even more than three decades after they were released. Speaking at The Breakfast Club Reunion Panel at Steely Con, Ringwald recalled making the iconic 1980s teen movie with Hughes and the very special work relationship they had. Many things made the 1980s a unique decade, including big hair, brightly colored outfits, and MTV music videos.
The movies of the '80s were especially iconic. This decade gave us The Goonies, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, and many more greats.
It was also the period when the Brat Pack was taking Hollywood by storm.
The Era of Teen Movie Cast Repetition
On February 15, 1985, the John Hughes classic coming-of-age teen flick The Breakfast Club, about five teens stuck in Saturday detention, premiered.
A few months later, St. Elmo's Fire was released.
It was another hit movie about the ups and downs of relationships and love featuring stars like Andrew McCarthy.

Molly Ringwald appeared on Marc Maron’s “Wtf” podcast (via People magazine) and revealed that she’s tried to convince her 20-year-old daughter not to become an actor because of how difficult it is for young women in Hollywood. Ringwald, an icon of 1980s teen movies thanks to roles in “The Breakfast Club,” “Pretty in Pink” and more, said she was taken advantage of as a young actor — and that it’s nearly impossible not to be as a woman growing up in Hollywood.
“I never really felt like I was part of a community when I was in Hollywood, just because I was so young, really,” Ringwald said. “I wasn’t into going out to clubs. I feel like I’m more social now than I was then. I was just too young.”

Andrew McCarthy has written and directed Brats, and his documentary about The Brat Pack arrives in June. Here’s the first trailer.
Tearing up the 1980s, both on and off cinema screens, was a bunch of young performers who earned themselves the collective name of The Brat Pack.
The group was made up of the likes of Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Bob Cryer and Andrew McCarthy, and they sprung to prominence particularly in 1985 and 1986. That’s when that group made up the cast for two hit movies, namely St Elmo’s Fire (pictured) and Pretty In Pink.
Other films followed, and the tabloid interest was intense, leading writer David Blum to give them the Brat Pack name. Andrew McCarthy reflected on all of this in a memoir he penned called Brats, released in 2021. Now, Deadline reports that the story is being turned by McCarthy into a documentary.

Where were you when the Brat Pack took over Hollywood?
Core 1980s Brat Pack member Andrew McCarthy revisits his iconic teen past alongside his fellow “It” actors for documentary “Brats,” which McCarthy writes and directs. Reclaiming the term first coined in David Blum’s 1985 New York Magazine cover story, “Brats” unpacks the teen films — and their stars — of the ’80s that shaped a generation.
McCarthy’s former co-stars Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Lea Thompson, Timothy Hutton, and Jon Cryer are among those featured in the documentary. McCarthy says he had not previously seen most of his past colleagues for more than 30 years.
Notably, Molly Ringwald is not part of the doc, despite her discussions on the role of the Brat Pack in cinematic history. The actress previously cited that she was typecast because of the moniker, telling The Guardian that “darker roles” weren’t available to...

Set to launch on Disney+ in select territories later this summer, after world premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, Brats looks at the iconic films of the 1980s that shaped a generation and the narrative that took hold when their young stars were branded the “Brat Pack.” McCarthy reunites with his fellow Brat Packers — friends, colleagues and former foes, including Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson and Timothy Hutton, many of whom he had not seen for over 30 years — to answer the question: What did it mean to be part of the Brat Pack? Exclusive: Faye Dunaway (Bonnie & Clyde), Harvey Keitel (Bugsy) and Andrew McCarthy (The Blacklist) have signed on to star in Fate, a suspenseful, supernatural romance that will launch international sales via Highland Film Group at Cannes.
Set to enter production in Vancouver this month, the film’s plot is under wraps, though its key location, the fictional Vista hotel, is said to draw inspiration from the iconic Los Angeles movie theater of the same name, which filmmaker Quentin Tarantino refurbished in 2022. Known for iconic turns in films like Bonnie & Clyde and Chinatown, Dunaway comes to Fate after collaborating with Baker on his debut feature Inconceivable, a 2017 thriller also starring Gina Gershon, Nicky Whelan and Nicolas Cage.

It’s been four decades since Samantha Baker bemoaned the fact that everyone had forgotten her 16th birthday amid the chaos caused by her wacky sister’s impending nuptials. On May 4, 1984, “Sixteen Candles” was released, the success of which prompted a string of hits by filmmaker John Hughes, launched the careers of several performers and inspired the glory years of teen movies in the 1980s. Read on for more about the “Sixteen Candles” 40th anniversary.
After the success of two movies based on screenplays he had written, “Mr. Mom” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), Hughes was given the opportunity to direct one of his scripts. Up to this point, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary “rebellion” films in the 1950s to the beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. Through the lens of 2024, “Dogfight” plays like a subtle, personal film you would expect from indie director Nancy Savoca (“Household Saints”), but that’s not what Warner Bros. thought they were making.
“They were thinking ‘Porky’s.’ They thought it was a comedy,” said director Nancy Savoca while on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast to discuss “Dogfight,” which is entering the Criterion Collection on April 30.
At the end of the 1980s headed into the early ’90s, when Warners was developing Bob Comfort’s “Dogfight” screenplay, teen comedies were big business for the studios. Alongside the wild success of the classic slate of teen comedies John Hughes wrote, directed, or produced, the “Porky’s” trilogy came to define the sex comedies of the era. It’s through this lens the studio saw the dogfight competition in Comfort’s script: A group of young soldiers pick up the “ugliest” woman they can find, bring her to a bar,...

Molly Ringwald, star of 1980s hit The Breakfast Club, has revealed she only rewatched the movie recently, and was jarred by some of the themes that were glossed over at the time.
Ringwald played Claire Standish, nicknamed “Princess,” one of five disparate school students grouped together during a weekend detention period, in the movie, written and directed by John Hughes, which debuted in 1985. Cryer, who co-starred with Charlie Sheen on the famously troubled but immensely popular CBS 2003-2015 sitcom, visited The View today to promote his latest series, the NBC sitcom Extended Family. When the inevitable question about the possibility of a Two and a Half Men reboot series, Cryer was considerably less than enthusiastic.
When View co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin pointed out that Sheen had recently rekindled his friendship with Men producer Chuck Lorre (the two are working on the Max comedy Bookie), she asked whether Cryer would be open to a Men reboot.
But Cryer suggested that Sheen sabotaged the show’s initial run, and that the prospect of working together again “for any length of time” is not a high priority for the Pretty in Pink actor.

Jon Cryer has proved himself a marketable quantity in the network sitcom game, a success most recently reflected in his starring role on the new NBC and Peacock show “Extended Family.”
Cryer, in an interview on the “Wtf With Marc Maron” podcast, recalled a key effort that helped cement that status — his part on the hit Charlie Sheen-starring sitcom “Two and a Half Men.”
Cryer said he remembered how Sheen’s role came together and how CBS played a big part.
“CBS wanted Charlie Sheen on the air so badly, and you could sense that,” Cryer said. “Based on, he had done ‘Spin City’ for a couple of seasons, and everybody was like, ‘Wow, he’s really good.’ Cause he took over for Michael J. Fox, and everybody said, ‘That is a bad idea.’ And then he turned out to be good on the show, with a totally different character.

Molly Ringwald appeared on the black carpet at the premiere of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans on Jan. 23. The Diff’rent Strokes actor looked chic in a black and white ensemble, matching the rest of the cast as they gathered for photos at New York City’s MoMA.
Feud: Capote vs. The Swans is the second season of the anthology TV series Feud, which Ryan Murphy, Jaffe Cohen, and Michael Zam produce for FX.

Ringwald, now 55 years old, donned a black velvet trumpet dress for the event. The Pretty in Pink actor paired her halter gown with statement-making diamond earrings and a white tulle shrug to complement her dress’s white tulle underlay. Not skimping on accessories, Ringwald wore a large pearl ring on her right hand alongside a black cuff with pearl accents.

The not-so-secret fact about premieres is that the actors rarely watch, usually ducking out when the lights go down. They spend the film’s duration smoking cigarettes and reciting the cinema’s version of the serenity prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, i.e. the director’s predilection to use my worst take.”
That was not the case at Sundance’s world premiere of Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence,” a ghostly thriller about the Payne family, a bougie clan with a significant number of problems including a spectral, uh, presence that could be friend or foe. On multiple trips to the washroom—blast the diuretic qualities of Diet Mountain Dew–I spied the entire cast watching the film with edge-of-the-seat anxiety, much like the rest of the theatre..

Lovers of 80s movies know the Brat Pack. The group of stars who graced the silver screen in films like Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and St. Elmos Fire were teen sensations and helped a generation grapple with coming-of-age issues in high school. Most have gone on to blossom into illustrious film careers, but they will always be remembered for their run in the 1980s film scene. While most also eventually bowed gracefully out of show business down the line, Andrew McCarthy was one member who had been out of the spotlight since the 90s.
Deadline is reporting that McCarthy will be rejoining his cohorts for the Hulu documentary titled Brats. McCarthy had written a memoir called Brat: An 80s story and has now written and directed the documentary that is currently in post-production. The film description reads, “McCarthy crisscrosses the country to meet up with some...

Photograph by Courtesy of Paramount Pictures With its Brat Pack cast and post-New Wave soundtrack, Pretty in Pink remains one of the quintessential teen movies of the 1980s. Even though he didn’t direct it, most people consider the film to be a John Hughes movie — after all, he did write the screenplay and was an executive producer. Because of that, he played a large part in the casting process, which worked out well for Andrew McCarthy, who landed one of the starring roles. Speaking on a Steel City Con panel, McCarthy told the story of how Hughes chose him for the movie based on the recommendation of Pretty in Pink’s female lead, Molly Ringwald.
