Association with any pre-existing intellectual property, regardless of whether its official or not, can sometimes guarantee recognition and success. One of the most well-known examples, one thats gained a reputation as one of the biggest best worst movies since Manos: The Hands of Fate, is Troll 2, Claudio Fragassos in-name-only sequel, which has spawned one of the largest cult followings in history. If Troll 2 has spawned a legacy due to its ridiculousness, then Lucio Fulcis Zombie, sometimes referred to as Zombi 2 or Zombie Flesh Eaters, deserves praise for capitalizing on the success of a horror franchise and at the same time being one of the unique entries in the canon of films that depict the living dead.

Capitalizing on the massive success of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, which was released in Italy under the title Zombi, the title Zombi 2 made it look like a clear sequel to Italian viewers.

Every so often, a film arrives with high ambitions only to be subjected to poor reception, scathing reviews, and, in some cases, deemed to be one of the worst ever made. This is precisely what happened following the initial release of Battlefield Earth in 2000. A sci-fi passion project for its star, John Travolta, who had been striving to get the adaptation of L. Ron Hubbard's novel off the ground for several years, is regarded by many as one of the biggest failures ever made.

Often cited along with The Room, Manos: The Hands of Fate, Birdemic, and Troll 2, as the very bottom of the barrel and having a pitiful score of just 3% on Rotten Tomatoes, Battlefield Earth has been a punching bag for many years. However, it's still shown on streaming services such as Tubi and Prime Video, and it's still a popular topic of discussion. Truth be told,...

There is nothing quite like a so-bad-it's-good film: the magical and hilarious oddity when a movie is so outwardly terrible and lackluster that it cycles back into becoming a fun and hilarious viewing experience. There have been many iconic so-bad-they're-good movies released over the years, ranging from all-time classics like Manos: The Hands of Fate and The Room to more modern examples like Cats and Morbius. However, one genre that has especially lent itself to this chaotic nature is the adventure film.

The same historical event that inspired director James Cameron's Titanic, one of film's greatest achievements, also inspired one of the worst films ever made. Such a descriptor is extreme by its nature and coveted by such iconic stinkers as The Room, Manos: The Hands of Fate, and Plan 9 from Outer Space. There's a key difference with Titanic: The Legend Goes On, an Italian film released in 2000: this monstrosity earns plenty of mockery but none of the reverse affection that objectively poor films can somehow create. There will be no cult screenings of Titanic: The Legend Goes On or absurd quotes integrated into daily life. Titanic: The Legend Goes On is too heinous for such fond pleasures — and even worse, it's boring.

Folklore horror cinema has been one of the most popular horror sub-genres for almost as long as horror has been around. From classics like Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966) and The Wicker Man (1973) to more modern releases like Robert Eggers' The Witch (2015) and Ari Aster's Midsommar (2019), the sub-genre is still going strong, and still beloved among the horror community. Recently, pregnancy horror has started to blow up. Of course, the heavy hitter Rosemary's Baby got this sub-genre started way back in 1968, but several films over the last few years have added some quality additions to the pack, like False Positive, Prevenge, and Huesera: The Bone Woman.

Many titles can contend for the spot of "worst movie ever made", but few do the job as well (or as terribly) as Manos: The Hands of Fate. This 1966 folk-horror film follows a family on a road trip who get lost and stumble across a house in the middle of the Texas desert, where they discover a pagan cult. Sounds like a million other movies, right? Well imagine those movies, but told in the most uneventful, incompetent way possible. Now you have Manos. But how did this monstrosity come about? Like many other so-bad-it's-good movies, this nice pile of trash was born from bizarre circumstances surrounding folks who never, ever should have been allowed near a camera. What resulted is absolutely entertaining, but wholly crap.

“Mystery Science Theater 3000” is returning for a 13th season, this time on a new indie streaming platform, Gizmoplex.

Created by Joel Hodgson in 1988, the cult show “MST3K” follows a series of ordinary humans captured by mad scientists who subject them to a series of terrible B-movies. To keep their sanity, the humans create a series of companion robots to riff on the films they watch, which are presented on the show in their entirety. “MST3K” has gone through several iterations, initially airing on Ktma-tv Minneapolis, then on Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi channel, for a total of 10 seasons. It was revived for a two season run on Netflix in 2017. The show has been highly acclaimed since its creation, winning a Peabody in 1993, and has helped turn seberal obscure movies into cult classics, such as “Manos: The Hands of Fate.”

When cinephiles talk about film, we often find ourselves discussing directorial careers; the trademarks, the way we see their identities as filmmakers emerge and change. That’s fascinating, but equally interesting in their own way are those directors who give us only one film to look at. It might be a singular masterpiece, a cult item, or a contender for worst film ever made (Manos: The Hands of Fate). In the not too distant past — November 24th, 1988, A.D. — a moderately successful stand-up comedian named Joel Hodgson slipped on a jumpsuit. He then spent a few hours on a Minneapolis Uhf station making fun of the terrible movies Invaders from the Deep and Revenge of the Mysterions from Mars, alongside a couple of handmade robot puppets. Only a handful of lucky Minnesotans were watching Ktma that Thanksgiving night, exactly 30 years ago. They all saw the birth of a pop culture phenomenon: a charmingly cheap-looking show that, no joke, changed television.

Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers is actually the first movie in the Sleepaway Camp franchise that I’d ever seen. The VHS cover art lured me in as a kid by teasing possible appearances from iconic villains, with Freddy’s glove and Jason’s hockey mask poking out of a woman’s backpack. I was a bit too young to understand the concept of trademarks at that age, so you can imagine my disappointment when neither character made so much as a cameo. Since I hadn’t seen the first film and didn’t have any context for the franchise as a whole (or that twist), I just thought of the movie as low-budget trash.

As I’ve grown older, however, I’ve discovered that low-budget trash can be a lovely thing. And I think it’s important to distinguish trash from “so bad they’re good” movies like Troll 2...

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Thanks to the St Louis Video Society and their tireless efforts to unearth the finest independent cinema from our region, we have another couple of gems for you. Eric Stanze is, as far as I can tell, still living in the St Louis area and is still very much involved in the business – he edits documentaries for blu-rays, and also does 2nd unit directing for some fairly mainstream movies; but it’s his 25 years of making low-budget horror that we’re interested in here.

He’s achieved some notoriety in his career for horror movies like “Scrapbook” and “Ice From The Sun”, chock full of unusual imagery and ultra-violence, movies that even have the luxury of their own IMDb pages. Although I’d be unlikely to say this about any other sub-genres, “family turns off road onto dirt track” movies feel a little played-out, like “seen one, seem them all” . A surprising thing to say about a genre with entries as varied as “Manos: The Hands Of Fate” and “The Evil Dead”, perhaps, but no less true; which is why it’s especially nice to see someone come up with a fascinating new twist on the genre, as first-time feature director Damien Power has done with Killing Ground.

For years now there has been a bitter behind-the-scenes struggle over notoriously shitty movie Manos: The Hands Of Fate. Despite the film dying a mercifully swift death upon its initial release and disappearing into the wilds of public domain (where it only existed in the form of a crappy print), it resurfaced and took an a cult popularity in the wake of its use on Mystery Science Theater 3000. The 1966 movie about a family captured by a polygamous pagan cult led by a white-faced “Master” and abetted by a slow-witted and Igor-like grunt named Torgo took on the sheen of appeal only found by films so bad, they attract an audience of people eager to revel in the incompetence of the execution. Manos: The Hands of Fate is a film I’ve been reading about for quite some time. Infamous for its ineptitude, it’s one of those “so bad it’s good” kind of movies that has achieved cult status due to its terrible acting, nonsensical plot, and technical errors. Shot in the 60s, it was written and directed by Harold P. Warren, an insurance salesman who, according to legend, made a bet with visiting location scout Stirling Silliphant that he could film a horror movie with an extremely limited budget. Hey there, everyone! I sincerely hope this finds you all well (or at least coping) and eager (or at least willing) to take on a new year. I love doing year-end lists. For me, it’s a time of reflection, as well as expansion. Since I started with Daily Dead in April of 2015, my horror-view continues to grow; I’ve been so fortunate to meet and speak with some enduring legends of the genre, not to mention strike many new friendships through social media. But what my continuing immersion in this greatest of cultures has provided above all else is an appreciation for the variety and depth horror has to offer. Tom Neyman, best known for his role as The Master in the 1966 cult classic Manos: The Hands Of Fate, died on Saturday. His daughter, Jackey Neyman, who also appeared in the film as young Debbie, shared the news on Facebook, stating that Neyman “has now transcended to become Manos. #HeIsAlwaysWithUs.” He was 80.

Born in 1935, Neyman—a professional artist—was active in community theater throughout the ‘60s. His only film credit is Harold P. Warren’s Manos: The Hands Of Fate, made famous by Mystery Science Theater 3000 and deemed “The Worst Movie Ever Made” by Entertainment Weekly. Made as a result of a bet with In The Heat Of The Night screenwriter Stirling Silliphant for a budget of $19,000, Manos featured local theater actors and models and was shot on 16mm, with all dialogue and sound effects dubbed in during post-production. I’m not crazy and you’re not reading this wrong. There’s a video game adaptation of Manos: The Hands Of Fate (yes, that film, the one that gives Plan 9 From Outer Space a run for its money).

As strange as this might sound, it makes perfect sense. If good movies usually make for bad 8 bit gameplay, then perhaps bad films make for good 8 bit gameplay.

As we get closer and closer to Halloween, the home entertainment releases on Blu-ray and DVD seem to get better and better, as this Tuesday will see the release of several fantastic cult classics and so much more. On October 13th, Criterion Collection is bringing home David Cronenberg’s terrifying masterpiece The Brood to both Blu and DVD and we’ve also got The Return of Count Yorga to look forward to courtesy of Scream Factory.

For those of you who love a good "bad movie," Synapse Releasing has a restored version of the granddaddy of them all, Manos: The Hands of Fate, arriving on both formats this week as well.

Other notable October 13th releases include a two-disc Blu-ray of the 192os classic The Phantom of the Opera, The Gallows, the 2oth anniversary release of Mosquito, Shakma, Tomorrowland, and the high-def debut of Class of Nuke ’Em High 3.

In just a few days, Flashback Weekend Horror Convention will be celebrating Halloween in August with their Michael Myers-related revelry (and more), and we now have a look at the final schedule for this weekend’s convention, which runs at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare from Friday, August 7th through Sunday, August 9th.

The Belgian film Cub validates the fear some of us have of spending the night in the woods. Cub on Blu-ray and DVD will hit stores on August 18th. Also: theatrical and digital release details for The Diabolical, HollyShorts Film Festival 2015 lineup, and Manos: The Hands of Fate soundtrack on vinyl.

Cub: Artsploitation Films will release Cub on Blu-ray and DVD on August 18th. Directed by Jonas Govaerts from a screenplay he wrote with Roel Mondelaers, Cub stars Maurice Luijten, Titus De Voogdt, Stef Aerts, Evelien Bosmans, and Jan Hammenecker.

"This dark, bloody, imaginative fairy tale about a camping trip that turns into deadly carnage draws on such influences as Lord of the Rings, Friday the 13th, and The Devil’s Backbone. The story follows 12-year-old outcast Sam who, along with his troop of cub scouts and their teenage supervisors, camp in woods rumored to house a mysterious and deadly werewolf.

Fantasia International Film Festival has unveiled its full line-up for its upcoming 19th edition which kicks off next Tuesday [July 14].

Over its three-week run, the Montreal-based genre film festival will showcase 135 features, including 22 world, 13 international premieres and 21 North American premieres, and almost 300 short films.

Shinji Higuchi’s Attack on Titan will receive its Canadian premiere as the closing film of this year’s edition on Aug 4. The live-action film is based on Hajime Isyama’s steampunk fantasy war opera manga series.

Additional highlights of the final wave of titles include the world premieres of Malik Bader’s thriller Cash Only and Ken Ochiai’s Ninja the Monster, as well as the Canadian premiere of Jonathan Milott & Cary Murnion’s horror comedy Cooties starring Elijah Wood.

The 19th Annual Fantasia Film Festival is only a week away, beginning July 14 and running through August 4. And as promised for today, they’ve revealed their full line-up of films screening at 2015’s festival in Montreal.

This year’s line-up boasts 22 World Premieres, 13 International Premieres, and 21 North American Premieres. Both Marvel’s Ant-Man and the animated Miss Hokusai were previously announced, but now they’ve added the much anticipated Attack on Titan movie as their closing night film. Other highlights include the Sundance darlings Cooties, starring Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson, Cop Car, starring Kevin Bacon and directed by the upcoming Spider-man director Jon Watts, and a trio of films from horror auteur Sion Sono.

3.19 One Watson, One Holmes

Before that glass ball had even begun its course along Elementary’s Rube Goldberg machine, an online civil war had turned into a murder investigation and a would-be client had turned into the chief suspect. It was a no-messin’ start for an entertaining episode that continued apace, with Holmes and Watson pinging around the city like pinballs, bouncing from one suspect to another.

Until now, hacker collective Everyone has been a bit-player in Elementary, one of Holmes’ many irregulars to be called upon for information, appeased with public humiliation, then sent back to its anarchist pranks.

This week, Everyone was centre stage, which allowed the writers plenty of fun dreaming up improbable usernames (Pony PewPew just squeaked past Droop Snout and MonkeyVsShark as the winner for me...

Thanks to Mystery Science Theater 3000, laughing at terrible movies has become a pop-culture institution. Now, 15 years after its last cancellation, the series might be revived for a new generation of snarky critics with an "online incarnation." In Wired's recent MST3K oral history, creator and original host Joel Hodgson hints at a possible series update, which would "feature a fresh (and as-yet unannounced) host and cameos from many MST3K alumni."

There are a handful of unimpeachable Thanksgiving institutions. Multi-thousand calorie meals? Of course. Football games featuring the Lions and Cowboys? Naturally. Parades? You bet. Watching hypnotically wonderful marathons of Mystery Science Theater 3000? Unfortunately, not since 1997.

Of course, that all changes this Thanksgiving. EW is pleased to announce that MST3K creator Joel Hodgson is hopping on board the Satellite of Love once again to program the return of Turkey Day. Shout! Factory, who have been doing a stellar job putting out MST3K on DVD, is helping to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary with a Turkey Day Marathon, curated and hosted by Hodgson.

A sequel hook is that very ambitious moment at the end of a movie where it boldly hint at a second film. While some can give the audience chills (think the ending of Batman Begins) there are a whole lot of them that end up becoming an embarrassment – usually when the film ends up bombing and ensuring that a second helping won’t be needed. Then again, when has a movie being bad stopped sequels from happening? I propose the following eight – ridiculous hooks to sequels that they really ought to have done, if only for the morbid curiosity. 8. Manos: The Hands Of Fate – “The End… ?” You know you want this to happen – if only for the awesome Rifftrax episode it would make. You’ve gotta love the British – despite all their talk about “stiff upper lips,” they sure do love their hyperbole. The latest comes from the country’s film critics, who’ve taken to asking if Ray Cooney’s silly romantic comedy Run for Your Wife is the worst film ever. While we certainly agree it looks pretty lousy (the jokes are obvious and the plot isn’t particularly inspired…), there’s no way this film is as awful as an Un-MST3K’d version of Manos: The Hands of Fate or even Plan 9 from Outer Space.
