When Mark Taylor found out the gender of his fifth child, he needed just a little time to process the information.
When Angel Taylor learned the gender of her new baby, she gathered her four girls—Jordyn, 12, Juliyn, 9, Jaxsyn, 3, and Jestyn, 9 months—to help surprise their dad with the news. Luckily, since it turns out they were having a girl for the fifth time, Angel and her daughters didn’t have to do much to organize the surprise.

In times like this it’s crucial to be aware. Not only of what is happening currently, but to be fully aware is to consistently remember what has happened in the past. “Baltimore Rising,” an HBO documentary film directed by Sonja Sohn, will illuminate the death of Freddie Gray and the aftermath in the city of Baltimore.
Premiering on HBO and HBO Now on Nov. 20, “Baltimore Rising” seeks insight in those with concrete ties to the city of Baltimore: the police officers, activists, community leaders, and gang affiliates. The film explores how to make change after the community had erupted into “deep divisions between authorities and the community — and underscoring the urgent need for reconciliation.”

Among the many insights into the system itself, the doc will spotlight key figures in the community, ones particularly invested in the reconstruction of the city.

It’s difficult enough to coax a puppy or a kitten to sit still and pose for a professional portrait. Add a guinea pig and a squirrel to the mix, and it seems logical that chaos would follow.
Enter Mark Taylor.
The British pet photographer, who runs a studio in the U.K. called Warren Photographic, is delighting animals lovers worldwide with his “brother from another mother” pics showing matching bunnies, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, squirrels and deer posing together in harmony.

USA Networks recently announced that they had greenlit a pilot for Unsolved, a scripted true crime series that will chronicle the investigations into the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G.
The two rappers were murdered only six months apart in 1997, both in drive-by shootings by unknown killers. Their deaths shook the rap world and highlighted its connections to gangs and gang-violence, prompting stories that the deaths were linked and part of an East Coast-West Coast rivalry in hip hop.
Unsolved is based on the Lapd Detective Greg Kading, who led several task forces that investigated the murders of the two iconic rappers, and wrote it all in a book titled Murder Rap: The Untold Story of Biggie Smalls & Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations. Kading is directly involved as a consultant on the pilot script of the show.

The biggest sonic challenge with "The Martian" was was to make the sound of an environment that has never actually been heard seem completely natural to the viewer. Fortunately, Oscar-nominated sound editor Oliver Tarney had access to actual field recordings from Nasa and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Jpl) for the sounds of Mars, Pathfinder, and the Rover. Then, in keeping with the epic and intimate survival story, the sound team intricately balanced dialogue and effects, paying close attention to Matt Damon's breathing as astronaut/botanist Mark Watney. "As the film is set in the near future, we wanted to avoid a conventional sci-fi sound, and instead use an array of sounds that would be familiar to the audience," explained Tarney, who collaborated with nominated mixers Paul Massey, Mark Taylor, and Mac Ruth. "This is also primarily a drama but there is still a huge amount of humor and positivity throughout the.

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

Charlie Chaplin believed that sound was a fad that would disappear from movies after a short time period. He may have been a genius, but he sure wasn’t right about that. Today, it is hard to imagine most movies without sound. Dialogue obviously recreates the experience of most people’s lives. Proper integration of music can build the theme meticulously. Mixing effects and other non-dialogue sounds captured during filming brings us into the world of the characters. The Academy Award for Sound Mixing awards up to three sound re-recording mixers – the men and women who “mix” dialogue, effects, music, and, well, everything else, to create the soundtrack we hear while watching a movie. The production sound mixer – the person responsible for capturing the sounds while shooting – is also awarded. The category tends to award musicals, which is not surprising given the importance of sound in such films. Prestigious action/science-fiction films are also favored,...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Normally, by mid-November, we have a pretty good idea of many of the likely nominees in most of the crafts categories. But in this year's race for Best Sound Mixing, I see things as extremely open — there's not a single film that strikes me as assured of a spot and more than a dozen appear to have very good chances. That makes for an exciting race. This category awards the overall mix of dialogue, music, effects and "everything else" into a film's soundtrack. This is different than sound editing, which recognizes the creation and editing of artificial sound effects. Being a leading Best Picture contender can certainly help a film's chances in mixing (seen in "The Social Network," "The King's Speech" and "Moneyball" in recent years), as can being a war film, a musical or a respected (or even not-so-respected) blockbuster. There are also certain mixers who score very regularly indeed.

The story centers on 3 African American brothers - 2 straight, 1 gay - looking for love and happiness in Los Angeles. The project marks the first sale for director Anthony Hemingway ("Red Tails") and producing partner Mark Taylor. Lena Waithe ("Dear White People") will co-exec produce with Jones, while Hemingway will direct. In the spring, we interviewed...

HBO has some new Bros. The premium cable service is developing comedy Bros from writer Cory Jones (Hand of God) and Hemingway Taylor Productions. The story centers on three African-American brothers — two straight, one gay and all very different — looking for love and happiness in Los Angeles. Bros is based on Hemingway Taylor's 12-minute presentation of Bros. The project marks the first sale for director Anthony Hemingway (Red Tails, The Wire, Newsroom) and producing partner Mark Taylor’s Hemingway Taylor Productions banner. Taylor is a former production executive with TNT and HBO. Hemingway and Taylor will executive produce.

In March, I introduced you all to a new project created by Benjamin Cory Jones (ABC Family’s "Chasing Life"), entitled, “Bros Before Hos”. The pilot presentation tells the story of 3 brothers of color - 2 straight and 1 gay, and their wickedly crazy life and romance issues. The teaser trailer went online a few weeks ago and garnered a lot of attention. Now the full pilot presentation is available to view today! What caught my attention most about the project was that it captures the quirky, nuanced side of black men that we don’t see too often in media. The kick-ass producing team includes Jones, Lena Waithe ("Dear White People"), and Mark Taylor....

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, “ I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.

In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! Back when it was simply named Best Sound (and when its sister award, Best Sound Editing, had only three nominees), Best Sound Mixing was seen as the more prestigious of the two prizes -- though still, many people are unsure as to what the difference between them is. By usually compiling heavily overlapping fields, the Academy rarely helps to establish the distinction, and so it is this year: four of this year's Best Sound Mixing nominees are also up for Best Sound Editing, and in another Academy tradition, they're all action fare of some sort. The fifth is a music-based film, though...

Last night the 2014 BAFTA Awards took place, hosted by Stephen Fry from London's Royal Opera House and it was 12 Years a Slave taking Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor while Gravity was honored for Outstanding British Film and Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor.
