The 47th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF47) will honour Soi Cheang as this year’s Filmmaker-in-Focus.
One of Hong Kong’s most stylish and formidable directors, Cheang joins an illustrious and growing list of recent Hkiff Filmmakers-in-Focus, including Sandra Ng, Stanley Kwan, Michael Hui, Sammo Hung and Brigitte Lin.
Returning to its traditional dates after last year’s postponement, HKIFF47 will take place from 30 March to 10 April. At the centre of this year’s cinephile extravaganza is the showcase of Cheang’s 12 seminal works, the publication of a commemorative book and, in collaboration with long-term festival partner Moleskine, the release of a limited edition notebook. Cheang will also attend a Face-to-Face session to share his insights and vision with the public.
In making the announcement, Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Executive Director Albert Lee paid tribute to Cheang and said the festival was proud to recognise his indelible contribution to Hong Kong cinema.

The family comedy drew bigger audiences than the latest Marvel superhero film.

Coba Cheng’s Cantonese comedy earned 1.06m (HK8.3m) over its opening weekend (July 14-17), making it the third highest four-day opening weekend for a local film in the Covid-19 pandemic. It recorded 123,587 admissions, which was 14.3 higher than Thor: Love And Thunder.

Lockdown and New Year have something in common. They both bring family members closer (in any sense) and allow them – or force them – to share joys and pains. “Chilli Laugh Story” is the debut feature of young director Coba Cheng, who plays on this convenient communality, and sets this classic Lunar New Year comedy based on his own similar experience, in the Hong Kong community during the lockdown. Because of those same featured restrictions, the film couldn’t be released in cinemas for the New Year, but it is finally out now and also due to UK theatres these days.

A Hong Kong family’s lockdown project to market a much-loved home recipe is an engaging effort that might just appeal to international tastes
As film distributors are all too painfully aware, comedies are notoriously difficult to export from one culture to another, however successful they may have been in their home territory. But this perky Cantonese feature is relatable and timely, given the story revolves around an extended family of working-class Hong Kong strivers trying to get ahead and survive the recent pandemic.
Twentysomething protagonist Coba Cheung (popstar Edan Cheuk-On Lui), lives in a modest flat with his hardworking mother Rita (Gigi Leung) and charming but shiftless dad Alan (Ronald Cheng). An average student who doesn’t have the same prospects as his friends from wealthier families, Coba has to do what he can with a natural hustler’s instinct. Unlike previous spin off Once Upon a Time in Triad Society (1996), Portland Street Blues (1998) is an official part of the franchise, involving a number of series stalwarts such as writer/producer Manfred Wong and executive producer Wong Jing. It also features cameos from the likes of Francs Ng, Ekin Cheng and Jerry Lamb portraying the roles they made famous in the main Young and Dangerous series. What sets Portland Street Blues apart from the main series is not only that it is one of the superior entries of the series, but that the main focus is on a female character in a usually male dominated genre. Portland Street Blues main focus is on the life of bisexual Triad member Sister 13 (Sandra Ng), who...

During the main series of Young and Dangerous there have been a number of spin-offs, mainly focusing more on the popular side characters that have appeared throughout, such as Sandra Ng’s Sister 13 in Portland Street Blues (1998) and Anthony Wong’s Tai Fei in The Legendary ‘Tai Fei’ (1999). Surprisingly the first spin off focused on the villainous Ugly Kwan, played by Francis Ng. Of course it’s no secret that Ng was one of the best parts of the original Young and Dangerous (1996), but it is still unusual a character like him would be spun off into his own movie. The version of Ugly Kwan that appears in Once Upon a Time in Triad Society (1996) is slightly different from the version that appeared...

The New York Asian Film Festival decided to make the title official by presenting her with their Star Asia award, at which Ng introduced the newest chapter about the hooker with a heart of gold, called Golden Chickensss. The Lady Miz Diva: How do you feel about receiving the New York Asian Film Festival Star Asia Award? The 2002 comedy Golden Chicken and its 2003 sequel Golden Chicken 2, starring Hong Kong's queen of comedy Sandra Ng, were love letters both to Ng herself, who was given perhaps the greatest showcase committed to film of her formidable comedic talents and endearing persona, as well as Hong Kong itself. Or more specifically, the people of Hong Kong, whose indomitable spirit allowed them to withstand anything history threw at them. These films were panoramas of Hong Kong history as seen through the experiences of Ng's character Kam, a prostitute. As the films tell us, "chicken" is Cantonese slang for a prostitute; the "golden" in the title refers to Kam being the proverbial hooker with a heart of gold, as well as the fact that...

Hong Kong-based Edko Films has announced 3D fantasy adventure Monster Hunt, to be directed by Raman Hui, who co-directed Shrek The Third.
The $30m Chinese-language film will star Bai Baihe (Personal Tailor), Kai Ko (You Are The Apple Of My Eye) and Jiang Wu (A Touch of Sin).
Based on the supernatural classic Strange Tales From A Chinese Studio, the film will feature Woba, a CGI protagonist who is the last of the monster kings embroiled in a war with humans that has lasted generations. His quest is to bring unity to the two races with the help of characters played by Bai and Ko.
“We give this classic tale a new spin by reducing the horror element and reinventing it with family-friendly fantastical characters and settings in an epic style,” said Hui.

In its own way, “Hello Babies” is something of a landmark, with traditional Lunar New Year box office rivals Eric Tsang and Raymond Wong joining forces for a combined assault on audiences instead of offering up more instalments in the “All’s Well Ends Well” and “I Love Hong Kong” series. Prolific director and actor Vincent Kok (“Hotel Deluxe”) writes and directs, pulling together the usual cast of familiar faces who tend to appear in this kind of extremely popular seasonal film, including the likes of Ronald Cheng, Fiona Sit, Alex Lam, Sandra Ng and others, with plenty of famous gag cameos being thrown in along the way. Though essentially an hour and a half of good-natured nonsense, for what it’s worth, the plot revolves around Raymond Wong and Eric Tsang as long standing rivals Lui Ming and Yeung Ah Wei, competing in a race to see who can...

Most people either love or hate Louis Koo. The current star of many medium budget Hong Kong potboilers has a rather unimpressive aura about him that doesn't necessarily distinguish him from other performers. However, he somehow manages to make his way into a really great movie every once in a while, much to everyone's surprise. Sandra Ng is not all that different in this regard. She, too, has made her way on to the big screen more often than one might think over the last decade. But her last real standout performance came in either 2004's Perhaps Love or 2003's Men Suddenly in Black. So what happens when you smash together these two relatively unengaging performers and try to wrap a wacky superhero action comedy around...

I thought it was about time i did a post on the great vampire buster of all time, yes you got it, lam Ching Ying. This will be listing all the movies and tv series where Lam Ching Ying either stars in or takes on the hopping vampires and evil spirits.
His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.
Other great movies which he starred in (But not in a vampire movie) were the likes of The Prodigal Son, School On Fire, Eastern Condors, The Magnificent Butcher and Painted Faces.
I have been a big fan of these movies since i first watched Mr.

The “comedy” element of Wong Jing’s martial arts action flick Princess and Seven Kung Fu Masters may be cause to pause, but it’s the fact the cast it chock full of some martial arts action legends, that’s really caught our attention. Sammo Hung leads the cast along with Sandra Ng, Ronald Cheng, Eric Tsang, Wong Cho Lam,and Wah Yuen. We nabbed a first look a the teaser poster and a brief summary of the plot, which so far is reading like some sort of campy Kung-Fu send up of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ meets ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Reason enough to give it a watch and then some but we’ll have to wait a while as its not due out until August. Synopsis: To protect their homeland from Japanese invasion, seven retired Kung-Fu masters are back in action to assist the local warlord (Sammo Hung...

The Descendants (15)
(Alexander Payne, 2011, Us) George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Nick Krause, Robert Forster. 115 mins
A sideways move from Sideways takes Payne on another tour of masculine crises, though this has mellowed and matured for longer. Family issues jolt Clooney out of his Hawaiian comfort zone. His wife's sudden coma puts him in charge of their two daughters, and brings their marriage into perspective, while his control of the ancestral estate adds to the burden. It's a well-rooted drama of great performances and big themes (and probably big awards).
Like Crazy (12A)
(Drake Doremus, 2011, Us) Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence. 90 mins
Young love sees no colour, but it must abide by visa regulations in this cross-Atlantic romantic saga, which tests a couple's endurance in an offbeat, indie style.
The Grey (15)
(Joe Carnahan, 2012, Us) Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo. 117 mins
Liam Neeson v wolves – seems like a good match.

Traditionally at Chinese New Year, cinema screens are filled with feel-good romantic comedies that give almost every name actor currently available a moment in the spotlight, in front of packed theatres of reunited families. This year proves no exception and writer-directors Chan Hing Ka and Janet Chun deliver the latest installment in the long-running, but grammatically-challenged All's Well End's Well series. The hook this time out is a social networking website that brings four mismatched couples together and explores their dfferent relationships over the course of two hours. When his girlfriend goes out of town, one-time rockstar and struggling backing singer Carl Tam (Donnie Yen) answers an ad from Chelsia (Sandra Ng), herself once part of a successful pop duo. Looking to escape her abusive husband,...

Fact: I wouldn’t give a damn about this movie if Donnie Yen weren’t all over it. The guy has charisma to spare, and while it’s good to see him doing something that doesn’t require him to pummel human beings for two straight hours, I’m still not too sure about this one. I understand that the “All’s Well, End’s Well” franchise is a staple of Chinese New Year cinema, but even I have my limits when it comes to schmaltzy goofiness. You’ll see what I mean in just a second. Assuming, of course, that you’re brave enough to stuff this trailer into the oh-so tender folds of your brain. Chan Hing-ka and Janet Chun’s “All’s Well, End’s Well” stars Louis Koo, Sandra Ng, Donnie Yen, Bak-Ming Wong, Kelly Chen, Chapman To, Lynn Hung, Mi Yang, and Ni Yang. The film opens on January 19th,...

All's Well Ends Well 2012 is due to be released in Hong Kong and China just before Chinese New Year. And for my fellow Australians, the film has been picked up by China Lion for distribution and will open in cinemas on Australia Day. ...

Princess And Seven Kung Fu masters is the latest project from director Wong Jing (City Hunter) and will star kung fu legends Sammo Hung and Yuen Wah.
Plot
During the early years of the Republic era, in the North-East region of China, the people are suffering from the power struggle among the local Warlords, bandits, and Japanese invaders. Warlord Lam (Sammo Hung), is not a leader of great vision, but having a patriotic heart, stands firm in his own beliefs, despite the several solicitations and temptations from Japan.
The only ‘paradise’ within the region is ‘Lucky Town’, the one place where no one dared to attack. Rumors abound that this place is cursed, for whenever anyone attempted to invade Lucky Town, they would disappear and vanish without a trace. In reality, there are seven kung fu masters who have retreated into the shadows and resided here. They are Manysons (Eric...

I’m assuming that this Chinese New Year flick is the equivalent of, say, “Valentine’s Day” and “New Year’s Eve” here in the States. Why else would Donnie Yen and his equally impressive cast mates find themselves in something as ridiculously cheesy as “All’s Well, End’s Well 2012″? There’s a lot of color, music, and goofy tomfoolery taking place in the embedded trailer, which, from what I’ve been told, is what people should expect from the seventh installment of the “All’s Well, End’s Well” series. The damned thing looks beyond silly, and given my love of all things Donnie Yen, there’s a very severe possibility that I’ll give it a shot when and if this things ever arrives on an English-subtitled DVD. Until then, this teaser and these images will have to keep me company. “All’s Well, End’s Well 2012″, which stars Louis Koo,...
