Eye-patches, a yo-yo, Game Of Thrones and Benny Hill. Here are the geeky bits and pieces we noticed in Doctor Who's The Girl Who Died...
While Ashildr watches the centuries pass waiting until her paths cross with the Doctor again, here’s something she might want to read to the pass the time - it’s the fifth of our geekly, weekly viewing guides to the ninth series of Doctor Who, pulling together all of the references and callbacks, recurring themes and motifs, and tenuous connections that we thought were interesting enough to write about anyway.
As always, if you spot something that we haven’t, please do share it with us in the comments below - so far, you’ve proved that we have some impressively eagle-eyed readers out there! And remember - it’s just a bit of fun...

It's not just Rory. These 42 Doctor Who characters have all, in their own way, died and been resurrected...
Spoilers! Lot of them, for Doctor Who of old and new lie ahead. Including the (publicised) return of a face or two to Doctor Who series 9.
Cheating death is a fundamental part of the make-up of Doctor Who. It's lasted for 52 years so far, whether on television or in spin-off media, and that's in no small part because of the original idea to recast the title character in 1966, thus creating the concept of regeneration.
But resurrection has also affected the characters around the Doctor and with a new series about to start, that looks to be as prominent as ever. Heck, series 9 even has a two-parter called The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived. Plus, we already know that apparently dead characters such as Missy, Osgood and River Song will...

From ampersands to The Apprentice, from dinner ladies to Dirty Den, here's a selection of nerdy in-jokes from Doctor Who series 2...
Last month we took a look at Doctor Who Series One as it celebrated its 10th Anniversary. Specifically, we delved deep into the murky world of in-jokes and sweet nerdy references.
Let’s take another trip back in time and have a look at the more notable and interesting references and in-jokes from Doctor Who Series Two, starring David Tennant and Billie Piper, where the credit of “Doctor Who” had been changed back to “The Doctor”. Pfft, party poopers.
New Earth
Old-skool fans would have been forgiven for being excited at the prospect, given that “New Earth” was a planet mentioned in the 1974 classic Invasion Of The Dinosaurs (though it didn’t actually exist in that story, it was a fake world). But all fans could get excited at...

There’s one of two things you can be almost guaranteed of when you see a story that takes place on a train – romance, or a murder.
Mummy On The Orient Express
By Jamie Mathieson
Directed by Paul Wilmshurst
As a farewell fling, The Doctor takes Clara on a trip aboard the Orient Express in space, exactingly copied from the original, except for the bit about being spaceworthy. It becomes quickly apparent that all is not well on the craft – a mysterious unseen beast is killing people exactly 66 seconds after the victim sees it – and no one else does. It turns out this particular journey is a massive two-fold trap – the ship is filled with scientists versed in areas of research that pertain to the beast, and are pressed into service to capture it, by any means necessary.
The Doctor quickly joins the press gang, understanding that the only way...

To TV viewers of a certain age, Kate O’Mara was that rare blend of sex appeal, scares and sassiness. So it is with another “S” word, sadness, that we report she has died at the age of 74.Born in 1939, the daughter of an Raf flying instructor and an actress, O’Mara initially considered art following her boarding school education but quickly became a full-time actress. She made her stage debut in 1963 in a production of The Merchant Of Venice, but truly established herself on television.During the 1960s and 70s, she appeared in a slew of guest starring slots on shows such as Danger Man, The Saint, Z-Cars, The Champions, The Avengers, Department S and Jason King. She became known for her sultry performances and her ability to blend beauty with danger. Her most notable roles came with soaps or sci-fi, including ferry drama Triangle, boating soap Howard’s...

British actress Kate O’Mara, who was known to many Americans during the 1980s as Joan Collins’ sister Cassandra Morell on ABC‘s Dynasty, died in Sussex, England this morning. She was 74. A TV vet since the 1960s with credits that included such cult British shows as The Saint and The Avengers, O’Mara was coveted for her portrayal of alluring, pungent personalities, such as The Rani in Doctor Who from 1985-86 and the ruthless businesswoman Laura Wilde in the BBC drama Howards’ Way. Born in Leicester, UK, O’Mara was the daughter of actress Hazel Bainbridge (The Family Way) and John Carroll. Originally, O’Mara pursued a career as a speech therapist, but she caught the acting bug and made her stage debut at 24 in a production of The Merchant of Venice. After breaking in TV, O’Mara caught the attention of Hammer Studios which cast her in the...

The Rani herself, Kate O'Mara, has died following a short illness.
We're sad to report that actress Kate O'Mara has died, at the age of 74. O'Mara was widely known for her work as Cassandra Morrell (Alexis' sister) in the Us soap Dynasty, also appearing in shows such as Howard's Way and Triangle across an extensive career.
Readers of this site in particular however are likely to most remeber her work as the Time Lord the Rani in a pair of 1980s Doctor Who adventures: The Mark Of The Rani, with Colin Baker, and Time And The Rani, with Sylvester McCoy. Whilst neither adventure was or is particularly acclaimed, O'Mara's work in both was an awful lot of fun. The Rani is a character long requested by many Who fans for a return - and at one stage she did come back, in the Dimensions...

Spoilers, sweetie: I absolutely adore Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. In fact, I think he was one of the best Doctors to ever Doctor this madcap universe. However, ‘The Time of the Doctor’ was right — it was Matt’s time to go, and the show will be better with Peter Capaldi’s fresh new face (and kidneys). Here’s why.
It’s a sad truth, fellow Whovians, but it’s a truth nonetheless. The new “rule number one” is that Steven Moffat will not leave Doctor Who until we drag him, kicking and screaming — so in his stead, it’s high time we got on board with losing Matt Smith instead.
Why Matt Smith Had To Go Take Our Poll
“I will not forget one line of this, not one day, I swear. I will always remember when The Doctor was me.”

Compare character Cassandra and her voice actress Zoë Wanamaker.
In-jokes are a major part of Doctor Who and can be found in every aspect of the finished product. From the way Hand of Fear included a scene in a working quarry in reverence to the way quarries provided the backdrop for many an alien planet, to the way the final images of CGI “monsters” like Cassandra and the Gelth are vaguely reminiscent of the voice actresses who brought their words to life, subtle tributes exist through the history of the programme.
There are also in-jokes you only glean from hearing about production side of things. For example, everyone picks up on Torchwood being an anagram of the letters in Doctor Who, but far fewer know that Torchwood was first used to label Doctor Who filming tapes in the early days of the Modern Who series. This bit of ingenuity was...

Since its resurrection in 2005 Doctor Who has gone on to be a phenomenally popular programme the world over. What makes this tiny British sci-fi so popular though?
Is it the Doctor? Yes of course! Is it the Tardis? Obviously it’s the Tardis! Is it the surprising array of acting talent from the most unlikely sources? (Talking about you Piper!) Yes that too! But one thing that is inescapably awesome about Doctor Who is the bad guys, those villainous villains with their villainous plans of villainy.
With Christmas Day seeing the triumphant return of the Doctor, battling against evil Snowmen overseen by the voice of Gandalf, we figured it would be interesting to take a little reflective look at ten of the best monsters that we have seen so far from Eccleston, Tennant and Smiths adventures as our favourite Time Lord.

When Doctor Who returned to our screens in 2005, I was genuinely excited. Despite having grown up in the period following the cancellation of the classic series, I quickly became a fan through watching the repeats and collecting the stories on video cassette. Many a dark evening was spent watching this or that thrilling adventure (and some truly awful ones) in time and space with the Doctor, his companions, and his foes.
Despite the fact that many of the stories I watched were from the 1960s, '70s or '80s, and constructed on what was obviously a shoestring budget, I was not put off; I was captivated. By the sense of danger and adventure. By the bold ideas and the characters. By the horror and the action. By the sometimes humorous, sometimes cantankerous anti-establishment lead character. As a child I was very much under the impression that, if this was...

Doctor Who has produced many famous monsters over its long 49 year history. Most people can name the pepper-pot perpetrators of evil, the Daleks, those silver giants the Cybermen and, at a push, monsters like the potato-headed Sontarans. A blue, big-headed goblin thing, the Moxx appeared opposite Christopher Eccleston in 2005’s ‘The End of the World’. Although not technically a monster in the moral sense – he’s actually a wealthy solicitor – the Moxx stands out from the other aliens in that story thanks to several little touches to his character – including his knack for spitting at people when he meets them. Both the Face of Boe (that big old face with dreadlocks in a jar) and Lady Cassandra (a villainous...

So here is a slight change of pace – I'll be branching out into other areas apart from Doctor Who, including film franchises, TV shows and comedies. How's about kicking off with a scary movie series then? Newbies be warned – there are so many spoilers in this article, that Doctor Who's River Song would explode with smug rage.
By the middle of the 1990s, the horror film had seemingly died for good. Just like Dracula slowly rotting away to a skeleton, the horror genre had slowly ebbed away for the past decade or so. Hammer Horror classics from the 1960s and 1970s had given way to popular horror franchises in the 1980s such as Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street, but even by the mid-1990s, these had seemingly vanished into the ether. However, acclaimed director Wes Craven along with Kevin Williamson were to breathe new life into the rotting genre.

Living up to his promise to infuse his struggling network with more original programming, the CW Network has picked up five new pilots to series. The Sex And The City prequel The Carrie Diaries, the Green Arrow reboot Arrow, a Beaty And The Beast re-imagination that shares the same name, a mystery thriller called Cult and a medical drama First Cut. Full series synopsis of which can be found after the jump.
The Carrie Diaries
It’s 1984, and life isn’t easy for 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw. Since their mother passed away, Carrie’s younger sister Dorritt is more rebellious than ever, and their father Tom is overwhelmed with the responsibility of suddenly having to care for two teenage girls on his own. Carrie’s friends – sweet, geeky Mouse, sarcastic and self-assured Maggie and sensitive Walt – make life bearable, but a suburban life in Connecticut isn’t doing much to take her mind off her troubles.

The CW Picks Up Carrie Diaries, Arrow, Cult, First Cut and Beauty and the Beast
The CW has picked up five new series for the 2012-2013 season, marking a more-than-normal order size for the smaller network. The Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries will join superhero drama Arrow, thriller Cult, medical drama First Cut and the updated Beauty and the Beast.
These five new shows join veteran series Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and 90210 on the schedule for next season. America's Next Top Model was also given a renewal for the fall. Gossip Girl is generally considered a safe bet for a shorter season next year, but the fate of freshman series The Secret Circle, Hart of Dixie and Ringer are currently unknown.
Updated: Nikita was just renewed for season 3.

Comics and all closely-related creative works in the geek spectrum are celebrated in the Eagle Awards 2012 - with the final round of voting now open to the public.
It's a chance to pick your favourite artist, writer, colourist, letterer, editor, publisher, story, graphic novel and comics magazine, along with American, British, European and manga titles.
But it goes beyond the printed page. There will be trophies for best web-based comic and comics website, while a further accolade will honour the best comics-related TV show or movie.
All the nominations are listed in full below.
It's apparent that the TV/film nominations do not necessarily have to be adapted from a comic. The contenders in this category are: The Big Bang Theory, The Walking Dead, X-Men; First Class, Captain America and Misfits.
The Big Bang Theory isn't derived from a comic but features four characters who are keen fans of comics and sci-fi culture.

It’s that time of year again- Halloween; ‘tis the season for ghouls and ghasts and spooks galore. There have been few true horror series, such as Tales from the Crypt and Masters of Horror, and for this admitted scaredy-cat, finding TV episodes to watch can be tough. Here are seven fun and spooky episodes to celebrate the holiday with, marathon-style. As a rule, Halloween-set episodes are excluded, as that’s a list for a different day, however, no Halloween TV marathon would be complete without It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror” (the first incarnation is a favorite, with the gang moving into a haunted house, the introduction of Kang and Kodos as The Simpsons does “To Serve Man”, and finally their fantastic rendition of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven); consider adding them to the ordered list below.

If there's one season that The Doctor likes, well it's got to be Christmas. Ever since the show was brought back in 2005, it seems like he's always landing in some festive utopia where Noddy Holder shrieks his innards out, or where brass bands fart along to 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'.
Given that I'm a modern-day Scrooge, this is baffling. The Doctor's only done the Easter landing once (to my knowledge), he seems to give Pancake Day a miss, and more to the point, he blanks Halloween and Bonfire Night, two bonafide opportunities to meet scary monsters. Seems that only robot Santas and killer Christmas trees will do.
Oh, and vengeful gas creatures, as witnessed in the second Christmas episode of Doctor Who called The Unquiet Dead. For those who are new to this Who lark, I should point out that this isn't a Christmas special, since it originally went out in April.

First dates – we've all been there. The sweaty palms. The uncertainty. The paranoia. Get the first date right, and you feel like you're on top of the world. Get it wrong, and it makes you feel like the entire population of couples are laughing in your face.
So spare a thought for the poor old Doctor, as he prepares to take Rose on their first date – well, Rose says as much in New Earth, but oddly, it's not really a date that he should remember with fondness, given that he makes screw-up after screw-up in The End Of The World. Consider the following rules:
The only sort of girl who would fall for this bravado would be the type that gatecrashes every Top Gear filming session or has a shrine to afro-headed goon Clarkson. The Doctor, however, is keen to show off his amazing time/space machine, furiously working the pump (yes,...

Are you sick of having your happy memories of TV shows and movies ruined by ill-advised follow-ups? Jeff is, and he’s not taking it any more…
On the 25th December 2003, I watched an episode of a show I had loved for over 20 years. Entitled Sleepless In Peckham, it featured two squabbling but loveable brothers whose comic mishaps had seen me follow them to Hull, Margate, Miami and, of course, Peckham. Little did I know when I sat down to watch it, but it would be the last time I would ever view an episode of Only Fools And Horses. While little known outside the UK, Only Fools And Horses is undeniably one of the most famous and well-watched shows our little islands ever produced. And I cannot watch it now.
Only Fools And Horses, unfortunately, would be one of the highest profile casualties of The Rfd factor, aka The Retrospective Franchise Destructor.

Noel Clarke talks to us about his new film, 4.3.2.1, with a dose of Michael Bay, sex scenes, character questionnaires and Mr Kevin Smith…
For his second directorial effort, Noel Clarke has left the world of Kidulthood and Adulthood behind for a distinctly more commercial project. As 4.3.2.1 readies itself to roar into UK cinemas, he kindly spared some time for a chat about the film...
I noticed the big football flag in the background of the film, and the football-related messages scrolling on the news screens in the movie. Are you an Arsenal fan, perchance?
No, I'm not at all!
I saw the big Arsenal flag, and the news story about Chelsea going bankrupt. That wasn't you?!
The reason that's in the film is that what we do, I made the girls answer a character questionnaire. And in Tamsin (Egerton's) character questionnaire, she said that Cassandra would be an Arsenal fan.

One month, 280 films and 70,000 words later, my guide to the films of 2010 is now complete. I hope you've enjoyed reading it all - it's been utterly exhausting but an ultimately rewarding venture I've been single-handedly pulling together since early December. If you have liked it, my only request is that you help spread the word about it now that it's all done.
If you're a fellow blogger or site owner, please give it a plug on your site. If you're a reader, give it a mention on Facebook, Twitter or other online places you might venture. A lot of effort went into this, the greatest reward so far has been seeing it talked about and hearing your reactions. I'm glad many of you have gotten a lot of use out of the previous pages, so I hope you enjoy this final part:
