Artists whose work I eagerly anticipate, respect or admire.
Whether under-the-radar, poised for breakthrough or seasoned veteran, their talent is undeniable. I'll keep tabs on them here.
In no particular order. This is an active list. SUGGESTIONS WELCOME
1. Idris Elba
Actor | Beasts of No Nation
An only child, Idrissa Akuna Elba was born and raised in London, England. His father, Winston, is from Sierra Leone and worked at Ford Dagenham; his mother, Eve, is from Ghana and had a clerical duty. Idris attended school in Canning Town, where he first became involved in acting, before he dropped...
Well deserved and long-time coming acknowledgement at the 2012 Golden Globes for Luther. Hopefully not the last nod to this stirring artist. I can't not love every character he plays.
He BETTER be the first black Bond: NO ONE has more across-the-board appeal to successfully herald in this turning point in Bond history than him.
2. Andrew Scott
Actor | Pride
Andrew Scott was born in Dublin, Ireland, the middle child with two sisters, in a financially comfortable home which allowed his parents, Jim and Nora, to send him to a private Catholic school for boys. He started acting as a child when he was in commercials on Irish TV, then was chosen from his ...
Sooo good! He chills to the core! Have only seen him as Jim Moriarty, but I can't possibly think this profoundness is atypical of him.

3. Rooney Mara
Actress | The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Actress and philanthropist Rooney Mara was born on April 17, 1985 in Bedford, New York. She made her screen debut in the slasher film Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005), went on to have a supporting role in the independent coming-of-age drama Tanner Hall (2009), and has since starred in the horror ...
I am very weary of publicly declaring my admiration (fanhood? fanship?) for many young up-and-coming actors. They invariably do something so classless/abhorring/immature/unprofessional or head-smackingly stupid--in their professional or private lives--that I have to jump ship and eat my words. This actress seems inherently un-Hollywood in that regard. And so far, it has been a pleasure bearing witness to the incredible rise of Rooney Mara. She is known to be hard-working, resolute, un-egotistical, demure, "sweet", "inexhaustible" and "scary" good. It really says something when, basically, everyone she's worked with (not a shabby bunch btw), shakes their head in amazement when asked to describe her. I swear! Youtube director and co-star interviews. From Tanner Hall to Dragon Tattoo they all do the head-shake-and-pause thing. Even Plummer, even Skarsgard! Who IS this girl??? Whatever she is, she's bound for greatness and I AM an official fan.
Watchlist: Carol - will star opposite Cate Blanchett! Based on the notorious 1950s novel by Patricia Highsmith (aka "The Price of Salt") Brooklyn (Hornsby) - just finished reading this Colm Toibin book and am now on an Irish history bent. Hailing from a highly regarded Irish-American NY family, I can only imagine how awesome this experience will be for her.
Untitled Terrence Malick Project - with Ryan Gosling Untitled Spike Jonze Project - with Joaquin Phoenix Ain't Them Bodies Saints (hot indie auteur David Lowery) The Girl Who Played with Fire (I hope to God they get Fincher back)
4. Kate Mara
Actress | Fantastic Four
Kate Mara is an American actress. She starred in the Netflix political drama House of Cards (2013) as Zoe Barnes and appeared in the Fox TV series 24 (2001) as computer analyst Shari Rothenberg. She appeared in Brokeback Mountain (2005), We Are Marshall (2006), Shooter (2007), Transsiberian (2008), ...
On the scene a few years ahead of her sister, Kate has paid her dues and it's looking like she'll get her "big raise" in this coming year. After hearing such good things from her sis, she snagged a considerable role (going by the UK original) in Fincher's upcoming Netflix series "House of Cards." Her role in Stefan Ruzowitzky's indie "Deadfall" has been particularly praised. It goes without saying that she was delightfully evil in "American Horror Story";hope she comes back somehow. It's been hard to neglect this saucy redhead and-- hopefully-- nobody will.

In real life he is a self-described teddy bear but on stage he is terrifyingly good. Every character he fully embraces and eases so naturally and acutely into their skin, that I often double-take and rewind his scenes to try to catch "him", y'know? I've seen his Masterpiece Theatre works but I knew he was about to truly breakout (State-side) in his intro scene as Eames in "Inception". Crazy good.

Has a "quiet" IT factor. Good-looking and talented he can easily be thrown into teen heartthrob superstar hell. Wisely, he seems to go for the interesting rather than the obvious blockbuster. A confident performer who seems quite good at infusing this confidence into his roles; making his characters appear so natural and at ease in their own skin, that one thinks "this is a real person". Like, he can give life to all the subtleties and layers so well, it seems like it's him and not an act. Does that make sense? It's like I can't see ANY of his presence peeking through the character.
