Apart from being a world class filmmaker, Anurag Kashyap has supported a few films as a presenter, latest being the write-actor turned director-producer Zeishan Quadri’s upcoming film Meeruthiya Gangsters. Not only that Anurag has edited the film as well.
Zeishan had written Gangs Of Wasseypur (Gow), assisted Anurag on it and then acted in the same film where he played the popular character “Definite”.
When asked, Anurag informed that when he was invited by Zeishan to see the first cut of the film, he “kind of made an excuse because he was scared that he might not like it”.
“Then Vasan Bala (director of 2012 film, Peddlers) called me up, and said that he was blown by it. I saw it, and was not just surprised, but completely taken in. Vasan and I then sat with him, and gave him feedback. The film is funny, edgy, and contemporary,” added Anurag.

Cinematographer Siddharth Diwan at DearCinema IndieTalk, Photograph: Gaurav Singh
DearCinema organized IndieTalk with emerging cinematographer Siddharth Diwan on June 14 in Mumbai. Among others, the session was attended by three directors with whom Siddharth has collaborated- Kanu Behl (Titli), Vasan Bala (Peddlers) and Shlok Sharma (Haramkhor).
This is what we learnt at the session with Siddharth. Please note that these are not exactly Siddharth’s words but our understanding of what he said.
What’s the right format for your film?
Filmmakers now have a plethora of choices available to shoot their films. So, the first question a cinematographer/filmmaker has to deal with is – what’s the right format for the film? Format is dictated by various factors such as the look, style of shooting, lighting and most importantly, budget.
Camera and its entire workflow needs to be thoroughly tested
Once you narrow down your choices, the next step is to test the camera thoroughly.

DearCinema will organize the next session of IndieTalk on June 14 in Mumbai with cinematographer Siddharth Diwan, who shot Titli, the only Indian film in the official selection of Cannes Film Festival this year. This was the third consecutive year for Diwan at Cannes, a rare feat for an Indian cinematographer.
Diwan’s Peddlers (writer-director Vasan Bala) was screened in the Critics Week sidebar of Cannes in 2012. He also worked as the second unit cinematographer for Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox that was also screened in the same sidebar in 2013.
Diwan represents the new generation of Indian cinematographers who are at ease with rapidly changing technology and whose imagery is in direct contrast with Bollywood, that believes in projecting larger-than-life images of stars. He is known for working efficiently with minimal crew, on real locations and pulling off feature length films in very short schedules.

Hovering around the twenty-one to twenty-four feature film mark with at least a quarter of those films belonging to first time filmmakers, the Quinzaine des Realisateurs (a.k.a Directors’ Fortnight) has in the past couple of years, counted on a healthy supply of French, Spanish and Belgium produced film items, and has been geared towards the offbeat genre items as with last year’s edition curated by Edouard Waintrop and co. To be unveiled on the 22nd, as we attempted with our Critics’ Week predix, Blake Williams, Nicholas Bell and I (Eric Lavallee) are thinking out loud and hedging our bets on what the section might look like or what the programmers might be looking at for 2014. Here is our predictions overview:

Six years after presenting Vinyan at the Venice Film Festival, Fabrice Du Welz finally returns with potentially not one, but a pair of works for the ’14 campaign.

It's probably a good thing that computers don't have Smell-o-Rama (yet), but I'd be willing to make an exception for this new trailer for The Lunchbox (original title, Dabba). "Set amid Bombay's dabbawallas -- who deliver thousands of lunchboxes sent by Bombay housewives to their husbands at the office -- Dabba is about an old-fashioned, but contemporary romance that grows entirely through notes in the lunchbox," wrote our reviewer Meenakshi Shedde. The film "is an exquisite, bittersweet ode to love and longing from India that makes your heart sing." (You can read the entire review here.) Ritesh Batra directed; the cast includes Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi), Nimrat Kaur (Peddlers) and Nawazuddin Siddique (Gangs of Wasseypur). The Lunchbox is scheduled to open in select theaters...

2013 was an exciting year for BollySpice, with our reporters speaking to many of your favourite Bollywood stars across the world, from New York, to London, to Mumbai and beyond. We thought we should do a quick recap of some of our interviews from 2013 to see in the new year, with our promise to bring you bigger and better interviews in 2014. So here’s five of our favourites, in no particular order – as they were all great!
Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra
We met Hrithik and Priyanka in London for their promotions of Krrish 3. Both the stars were in a particularly hyperactive mood and were literally bouncing off one another! What made the interview though was a lesson from them in ‘Bro-codes’, where they refused to give in to our challenges of pitting Krrish the superhero against other contemporary superheros and instead gave us the virtues of the bro-code and...

Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment is producing Amit Kumar’s Give Me Blood and Vasan Bala’s Side Hero.
Sikhya produced Bala’s Peddlers, which premiered at Cannes Critics Weeks last year, and was also a co-producer on Kumar’s last film Monsoon Shootout, which premiered in official selection at Cannes 2013.

Give Me Blood, about two Indian soldiers serving in the British Indian army during World War II, was selected for Film Bazaar’s Co-production Market last year.

"The challenge for indie films is a release, and most films face problems due to the marketing costs," Monga, considered one of the most prolific producers of the new wave of cinema, told Ians in an interview.

I rrfan Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui have long proved their mettle as two of the finest actors India has ever seen. So, the toast of the town in Ritesh Batra’s Lunchbox is Nimrat Kaur, with her superlative performance as the lonely housewife Ila. Though she forayed into films with Vasan Bala’s Peddlers, her role in Lunchbox has made everyone sit up and take notice of her. Kaur, who has worked in numerous plays, commercials and music videos before, opens up about her character in the film and her life:
On falling in love with the script of Lunchbox
Ritesh (Batra) met Guneet (Monga) at Berlin Film Festival and she showed him some rushes of Peddlers. That got Ritesh interested in meeting me for Ila’s part. We had a lovely meeting in Mumbai; it was a great connection we both made. He is a humorous man with a very unassuming vibe.

Faith Connections (France/India) directed by Pan Nalin will have its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2013.
In Faith Connections, Nalin travels to Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s most extraordinary religious events. There, he encounters remarkable men of mind and meditation, some facing an inextricable dilemma; to embrace the world or to renounce it. Faith Connections explores such diverse and moving stories as a young runaway kid, a Sadhu, a mother desperately looking for her lost son, a yogi who is raising an abandoned baby, and an ascetic who keeps his calm by smoking cannabis — all connected by one faith against the spectacular display of devotion.
The documentary has been produced by Gaurav Dhingra (Peddlers, Haraamkhor), Raphael Berdugo (Eros, Caramel) and Virginie Lacombe (Le fils de l’autre, Soongava – Dance of the Orchid).
Pan Nalin, who hails from Gujarat, earlier made Samsara and Valley of Flowers.

Mumbai, June 7: Actress and now filmmaker Vishakha Singh, who has co-produced "Peddlers", is confident that the small-budget project would yield maximum results at the box office.
Directed by Vasan Bala, the thriller has been produced and presented by Guneet Monga-Anurag Kashyap Films Pvt Ltd (Akfpl).
It's release date is yet to be finalised and Vishakha feels that "initially the film would sell on Anurag Kashyap's name and later it would sell on word of mouth. It is a minimum investment with maximum returns".
Set in Mumbai, the film about young destitute boys trapped in the drug trade and a police officer chasing.

When it comes to the coverage of the 66th Cannes Film Festival starting today, mainstream media outlets’ obsession with celebrities seems to be getting the better of them. Playboy Girl Sherlyn Chopra and Ameesha Patel and the likes are being written about with equal enthusiasm (quite often even higher) than the films and people who will actually represent India at Cannes 2013.
Cannes coverage of the Indian press is as ill-informed and misleading as it’s bizarre. Quite often the most talked about titles are those which don’t even feature in the selection while some have market screenings. It’s obvious that the festival coverage by the Indian mainstream media is driven by ignorance and publicists.
Here are some Cannes headlines from mainstream media:-

Nandita Dutta takes us into the world of the most sought after Independent producer of Mumbai, Guneet Monga
Next week, Guneet Monga heads to Cannes with an impressive lineup as a producer: Monsoon Shootout in official selection and Dabba (The Lunchbox) in International Critics’ Week.
She featured in The Hollywood Reporter’s list of 12 outstanding International women achievers in the field of entertainment a few months ago. They called her India’s go-to producer for edgy young filmmakers. The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (Iffla) conferred on her their annual Industry Leadership award.
Though her success may sound astounding, few will believe that this young woman-full of enthusiasm-travelled to her first international film festival in Venice in 2010 with some 200 posters and 20,000 handouts of That Girl in Yellow Boots. She thought she could paste posters of her film everywhere-like the festivals she had attended in school and college-and grab attention of the audience.

“Monsoon Shootout” by Amit Kumar will have a midnight screening at Cannes 2013
There was a time in Indian cinema, the era of the masters like Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy and Mrinal Sen, when it was not unusual to have several Indian films in competition at the Cannes film festival. Take for instance the year 1956 when Ray’s Pather Panchali and Shantaram Athavale’s Shevgyachya Shenga competed in the feature film category. Or the year 1954 when Bimal Roy’s Do Beegha Zameen and Kishore Sahu’s Mayurpankh were in competition along with two short films by Mohan Dayaram Bhavnani. [Read India’s tryst with Cannes]
The last Indian film that got selected in competition was Shaji Karun’s Swaham way back in 1994. Since then, we haven’t managed to catch the fancy of Cannes selectors [Read Why Indian films don't make it to Cannes]. However, this year seems to be a little different. Anurag Kashyap at Cannes
Cannes has Kashyap written all over the Croisette. His production Udaan broke the seven year jinx at the prestigious festival in 2010. In 2012 he returned to the French Riviera as producer of Vasan Bala’s Peddlers at Critics Week while his two part Gangs of Wasseypur screened at Directors’ Fortnight. This year the tally goes further up with his productions Dabba and Monsoon Shootout, while he leads from the front with his Ugly. And that’s not all- he has also directed a segment of Bombay Talkies that has a gala screening to celebrate the 100 years of Indian cinema. For Cannes it seems like Indian cinema has become synonymous with Anurag Kashyap. Bikas Mishra speaks to the director in an exclusive interview.
What is Ugly about?

Ritesh Batra
Dabba (The Lunchbox) by Ritesh Batra has been selected for Cannes Critics Week, a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival.
Dabba revolves around Mumbai’s dabbawallahs/lunch box delivery men. It is the story about two people living in their own private prisons until a chance encounter helps them to create a fantasy world together, and gradually the fantasy overwhelms their reality.
Seven first and second feature films are selected from all over the world for competition in the Critics Week. Apart from Grand Prix, Fipresci and Visionary Jury awards, these films also compete for the Camera d’Or.
The film features Irrfan Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles. It is produced by Sikhya Entertainment (India) and Dar Motion Pictures (India) and co-produced by National Film Development Corporation (India), Asap Films (France) and Rohfilm (Germany).

Strategic Parners has grown in importance, takes place immediately after Toronto Ff. Strategic Partners, one of the world’s top co-production/co-financing markets focusing on feature film, TV and multiplatform fiction, shines the spotlight on India and for the second year in row, the United Kingdom at the 16th annual event, September 12-15 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
"Strategic Partners’ spotlight on India and the UK is timely,” said Laura Mackenzie, Director, Strategic Partners. “Momentum continues to build in the number of Canadian and International producers looking to collaborate with India and the UK is a natural co-spotlight given their experience in successfully capitalizing on their co-pro treaty with India many times."
Offering an intimate, organized forum for projects seeking financing, as well as those at an early stage - looking for the right partner, Strategic Partners’ linear program is designed to provide unparalleled access to international co-production possibilities - all under one roof.
"Strategic Partners held a soft focus on India to introduce a small number of India producers and officials to the event. This has already contributed to a Canadian film shot in India,” added Mackenzie.
The deadline for the Strategic Partners' call for producer applications and industry registrations is June 28. Application/Registration forms are now available at www.atlanticfilm.com/sp
Top Canadian and international industry players are selected to attend, including producers, investors, sales agents, funding agencies, broadcasters and distributors. Offering close to 1000 pre-scheduled 1-2-1 meetings, coproduction focused roundtable sessions, cutting edge panels, visionary keynote speakers, screenings and receptions, Strategic Partners is a convergence of talent and innovation, producing tangible results.
“It was at Strategic Partners that we were introduced to producer, Karen Shaw’s project Khoya in 2012. It's an interesting project and given our experience in International productions, we came onboard instantly," said Guneet Monga, producer, Sikhya Entertainment, India (Gangs of Wasseypur, Peddlers.)
"Guneet Monga and I connected during our participation in Trans Atlantic Partners, and further cemented the relationship at Strategic Partners,” said Karen Shaw, producer, Quarterlife Crisis Productions, Canada (Khoya, The Good Fence). “Khoya was shot in India, where we worked with Guneet, and the film is now in post production."

It is rare that I wish I lived in Los Angeles, but this year's Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles is making a good case for the city of angels. A few days ago we announced the opening and closing night features of Iffla, and now we have the whole schedule to share. And It is damned impressive. In addition to Gangs of Wasseypur and Midnight's Children, the Iffla has rounded up some of the biggest critical and commercial hits of India's fantastic 2012, as well as a trio of classic films that I wish I could see on the big screen. The highlights for me are Ashim Ahluwalia's Miss Lovely, Vasan Bala's Peddlers (which I hope to finally be able to see and review), and...

I n 2012–the year Indian cinema turned 100–it showed renewed vigour and youthfulness as if it were being reborn. A new generation of young and restless filmmakers, who caught attention of festival programmers worldwide, rewrote the rules of not only mainstream cinema but also challenged what Indians traditionally believed an “alternative film” or at times labeled as “art film” stood for.
We use the term ‘independent’ to denote the attitude rather than the economic mode of production. That’s why films that are backed by major studios and the government as well as films which have been funded in completely non-traditional ways co-exist in our list.
Any such list can’t claim to be authoritative and scientific; however, what we claim is that our listing isn’t arbitrary. We took into consideration factors such as selection at A-list festivals, popularity among festivals in general, awards, jury mentions, international reviews, international distribution and domestic release.

Vasan Bala’s first feature film, Peddlers, follows the lives of three unrelated individuals whose lives gradually intersect: Mac (Siddharth Menon), a streetwise orphan who deals drugs and does odd jobs; Bilkis (Kriti Malhotra), a young former chemistry teacher with cancer who comes to Mumbai to work as a drug mule, and eventually gets work in the factory where the drugs are manufactured; and a cop, Ranjit,(Gulshan Devaiah) with a reputation as a seducer, but whose impotence drives him to sudden outbursts of rage. Mac meets and falls for Bilkis, and the two of them begin to develop a tentative relationship. Their paths eventually cross that of the brutal and violent Ranjit one day when he is following up on a tip that he hopes will lead him to a connection. He arrives at a gaming parlour to meet his source seconds after Mac has bungled his attempted robbery of it.

Pedal to the Medal: Death and Drugs Intermingle on the Street of Mumbai in Bala’s Impressive Debut
Vasan Bala, previously casting director and protégé of Anurag Kashyap, makes his directorial debut with Peddlers, an entrancing collision of several desperate lives in Mumbai’s underworld. Managing to avoid most of the tiring clichés with intersecting characters, Bala proves he is definitely an intriguing talent and his debut is an exciting title to seek amidst a current influx of new independent cinema coming out of India. Energetic, intriguing and laced with a great mixture of compelling narratives and arresting performances, one can only hope Bala’s film finds the audience it deserves.
We’re introduced to three very different characters, whose paths and fates will eventually cross, perhaps more than once. There’s Mac (Siddharth Menon), a petty street thief and drug dealer, raised by an uncle who has since cut ties with him.

Peddlers
Directed by Vasan Bala
2012, India, 116 minutes
A disarming film deserves a disarming title. The word ‘peddlers’ evokes quaint images of merchants shuffling through marketplaces with baked goods, or perhaps wandering salesmen looking to unload knickknacks. A casual or clueless traveller to Mumbai will see just that: millions of people, in business for themselves, selling to one another. Casual and clueless though we may be, director Vasan Bala is not, we are fortunate to have such a savvy and sympathetic guide to Mumbai’s marginalized outskirts and rich underworld.
Peddlers follows three main characters, initially only tangentially related: Mac (Siddharth Menon), a petty drug dealer, Ranjit (Gulshan Devaiah), a rookie narco officer, and Bilkis (Kriti Malhotra), a former chemistry teacher turned mule. One of the main reasons for this film’s considerable success is the strength of these performances. Mac manages to be both naïve and street-smart, tough but coy,...
