It has been four years since we heard word of Sean Durkin‘s Janis Joplin biopic, Janis. About a year later, it was reported that Lee Daniels would be taking on his own biopic (talk about a change in voice!) with Amy Adams, while, on his end, there was merely silence. The Martha Marcy May Marlene helmer went on to Southcliffe and, since then, has only been “seen” in a producing capacity on BorderLine Films’ titles — but an awfully enticing bit of news would tell us the project’s still very much in sight.
So let’s just get it right out: Janis is close to acquiring Michelle Williams, who takes a role once considered for Nina Arianda. That’s about as deep as this news goes, for what’s in Variety gives us less information than was available in the previous presidential-election cycle. As we learned then, it’s...

★★★☆☆ "Take another little piece of my heart," Janis Joplin famously wails in Piece of My Heart. In Janis: Little Girl Blue, Amy Berg has lovingly reassembled those pieces, seemingly scattered over the most musically-critical decade in our recent history, and shaped them back into the bright star that was Joplin herself. While it is a documentary in the classic sense (talking heads, reels of historical footage, even a re-enactment of Joplin's letters), there is such a warm nostalgia for the subject that we do not seem to mind the familiar tropes. Berg brings us a softer, more vulnerable side to Joplin without trading on her name. There are some great nuggets: insightful anecdotes from former band members of Big Brother & the Holding Company as well as her family and archive footage help make this a wonderful portrait.

It's been a busy year for triple-threat Gabrielle Ruiz. After being a part of the closing cast of Broadway's Ifthen, she then starred opposite Justin Guarini in Bucks County Playhouse's production of Company, before appearing in the new Off-Broadway musical Piece Of My Heart The Bert Berns Story. Having been a working actress in New York and on National Tours for nearly a decade, as exciting as those shows were, Ruiz new what to expect from the experiences. However, starting tonight, she is in for something completely new. At 87 Ct, Ruiz makes her debut on The CW's musical comedy Crazy Ex-girlfriend as Valenica, the long-term girlfriend of Josh, whom the show's titular ex moves cross country to be near. If you saw last week's premiere, you know that this can only lead to neurotic, slightly unhinged fun.

But as a longtime and still fervent member of the Church of the Six Soul-Sisters (Kelly, Carrie, ‘Tasia, Melinda, Haley and Candice, of course), that response would be as unthinkable to me as LOLing after Travis puts a bullet into his loyal pal at the end of Old Yeller.

Many monsters came to Midian seeking shelter from the hate of humanity. That hate brought death and destruction to the supposedly safe haven in the 1988 novel, Cabal, and its film adaptation, Nightbreed (1990), leaving viewers to wonder what Clive Barker's eclectic cast of characters would do next. On July 28th, Tor Books will release a highly anticipated 300+ page answer (in both hardcover and Kindle) to that question with the Nightbreed sequel anthology, Midian Unmade: Tales of Clive Barker's Nightbreed. Featuring an introduction by Barker and short stories from a wide range of great writers (including David J. Schow, C. Robert Cargill, and Weston Ochse), this Nightbreed collection explores what happened after the last page was turned and the end credits rolled in Barker's brilliant world of the lost and lonely.
Synopsis: "An all-original horror anthology set in the world of Clive Barker's cult film masterpiece, Nightbreed, and including stories by Seanan McGuire,...

Tonight's elimination/performances show, kicked off with them revealing that it was an American Classics theme, and the contestants got to sing 2 songs. Tyanna Jones sang “Proud Mary” and “Why Do Fools Fall In Love.” Clark Beckham sang “Moon River” and “Superstition.” Jax sang “Beat It” and “Piece of My Heart.” Nick Fradiani performed “Only the Good Die Young” and “American Girl.” Quentin Alexander sang “Are You Gonna Go My Way” and “The Sound of Silence.” Joey Cook sang “Somebody to Love” and “My Funny Valentine.” Rayvon Owen belted out “Always On My Mind” and “The Doobie Brothers.” At this point, it had been revealed that everyone was safe except for poor Joey Cook and Rayvon Owen. So, they had to hope the live Twitter voting would save them. And Rayvon got lucky again with the save, which means Joey Cook had to hit the road and get ready for the 2015 American Idol concert tour.

Wednesday (April 15) night's "American Idol" theme is American Classics and America played some role in choosing the eligible songs and at some point, somehow, we'll find out who America put in the Bottom 2 and then America will get to go on Twitter and choose who we/they want to save. That's a lot of responsibility on you tonight, America. Good thing I only have to recap! Click through and follow along. 7:59 p.m. Et. Note to self: Clark Beckham is a person on "American Idol." Try to remember. 8:00 p.m. "Tonight we celebrate the songs you picked as American Classics," Ryan Seacrest says, underlining the confusion. And is Ryan already holding the results? Does that mean we've abandoned the envelope-presenters? That wasn't a good gimmick. But it wasn't a bad gimmick either... 8:01 p.m. Jennifer Lopez Fashion Show time! Yeah, there's no way she's touching anybody in the crowd tonight.

It's that time again, kids, as the seven remaining contestants on American Idol are set to hit the stage to sing, not once, but twice, for the portion of your votes that don't actually count towards eliminating anyone.
The vague theme de jour this time around is "American Classics," which is about as restrictive as the Billboard Top 100 (so no Beatles, I guess?). There are some questionable choices, wheelhouse songs and Idol mainstays on tap, with played-out hits like "Superstition" and "Piece of my Heart" returning to competition.

When last night’s (April 9) episode of “Lip Sync Battle” got underway, both Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway were ready to bring their A-game.
The “Adjustment Bureau” babe selected a pair of popular ditties for her portion of the evening’s entertainment, including Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” and Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart.”
However, nothing could prepare the world for Hathaway’s dramatic (and true-to-form) version of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball,” which ended up sealing Emily’s fate. Borrowing Miley Cyrus' distinct video look of a tank-top and tighty whiteys, Hathaway mimes the lyrics with desperation, even slipping in an up-close diss to Blunt with the line "I guess I should've let you win." But the grand finale – a swing on an actual wrecking ball – whips the crowd into a frenzy, leaving her opponent (and host LL Cool J) speechless on the sidelines.

It was a mini The Devil Wears Prada reunion when Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway hit the stage for Thursday's episode of Lip Sync Battle. After Anne showed off her lip-sync skills with "Love" by Mary J. Blige, Emily performed a crowd favorite, "No Diggity." Both actresses managed to nail the rap part of their songs - bonus points for the way they both danced, too. For Emily's second song, she chose "Piece of My Heart," while Anne brought out the big guns with her "Wrecking Ball" lip sync, including an actual wrecking ball that she hopped on before flipping Emily off. Emily Blunt’s Janis Joplin Couldn’t Knock Anne Hathaway Off Her ‘Wrecking Ball’ on ‘Lip Sync Battle’
Ever since Spike TV posted Anne Hathaway's killer of a "Wrecking Ball" performance earlier this week, we figured she'd take home the "Lip Sync Battle" winning glory (spoiler alert: She did). But, this was not an easy win for the Academy Award-winning actress. Hathaway went up against her "Devil Wears Prada" co-star Emily Blunt during Thursday night's episode, who threw down a worthy battle by bringing Janis Joplin back to life with her stunning rendition of "Piece of My Heart.

For a performer whose career was so short-lived, Janis Joplin has been hugely influential and such a largely contentious figure in the world of music. We’ve recently gotten a Jimi Hendrix biopic, along with music stories about everyone from the short lived (Ian Curtis, Jim Morrison, John Lennon) to the long-living legends (Johnny Cash, Ray Charles), so it makes sense that a Joplin biopic is long past due.
Late last week, Deadline was breaking news that Jean-Marc Vallee had signed on to direct Get it While You Can, the working title for a Janis Joplin film with Amy Adams attached to star and sing in the film. This would be Vallee’s fourth film following Dallas Buyers Club, the upcoming Wild, and the just-wrapped Demolition.
Adams is terrific casting, and Vallee is promising, but we’ve been down this road before, and a new director attached is no closer...

After years of false starts, Amy Adams will finally have her rock-'n'-roll moment. The five-time Academy Award nominee is set to portray legendary singer Janis Joplin in a long-stalled biopic that is finally inching closer to production, Deadline reports. Adams, 40, signed on to play the "Piece of My Heart" singer way back in 2010, but the project hit numerous roadblocks over the years as it struggled to find a director and writing team. Wild director Jean-Marc Vallée is in negotiations to helm the biopic, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Vallée directed Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club, and is reportedly in...

For years now, Amy Adams has been more than a little interested in getting a biopic about iconic rock star Janis Joplin off the ground. Reports have been circling since 2010 when Fernando Meirelles (City Of God) was going to direct, and a couple years ago Lee Daniels boarded the film, back when it was being called Get It While You Can. However, now the film scripted by Ron & Theresa Terry is untitled and has a new director. Deadline reports it will be Dallas Buyers Club helmer Jean-March Vallee behind the camera, fresh off his buzzed work on Wild starring Reese Witherspoon, another likely Oscar contender. Read on! Previously, the project was said to only chronicle one day in the life of the singer of songs such as Piece of My Heart and Me and Bobby McGee. But maybe it will employ flashbacks on the day her drug addiction finally led...

Jukebox musicals are the guilty pleasures of Broadway and, ever-more frequently, off-Broadway, offering well-heeled patrons the joys of nostalgia and the reassuring sense that the songs we grew up on were classics worthy of revisiting. Piece Of My Heart: The Bert Berns Story, which opened Sunday night on 42nd […]...
