Blazes in Southern California are currently wreaking havoc on the film and television community. The 405 Freeway has been partly shut down due to a brush fire that started last night and now encompasses 50 acres, per the Los Angeles Fire Department. That fire endangers the famed Getty and Skirball Cultural Centers; according to Bloomberg, Rupert Murdoch’s Bel Air estate is among those that fall within the evacuation zone.
These are in addition to four active fires reported yesterday in the counties of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Ventura, plus one in Santa Clarita that raged across tens of thousands of acres, with the Ventura fire requiring 27,000 residents to evacuate.
Valencia and Newfall, California have also endured the Rye Fire since yesterday, necessitating a two-day (thus far) closure of Santa Clarita Studios, home to the new CBS crime drama “S.W.A.T.,” starring Shemar Moore.

The Westworld creators talk imagery, metaphor and nerdy details in season one’s Blu ray special features…

While it aired, the first season of Westworld could hardly have been more closely scrutinised for clues, twists and Easter Eggs. Between sites like this one and lengthy Reddit threads, fans went through Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s sci-fi drama with a fine-toothed comb.
The result of that careful work by fans meant that by the game-changing finale, most of Westworld’s secrets had been laid bare. Many fan theories had been proved correct. Nods to the 1973 film and to Michael Crichton’s other famous theme park story had all been exposed. When the DVD and Blu-ray release arrived at the start of this month then, very few...

The Upside Down of “Stranger Things” became an apt metaphor for this divisive year, and, maybe not so strangely, “Stranger Things,” along with several other Best Drama Emmy contenders, offered unifying themes to combat the forces of oppression, hate, and turmoil.
These included “Westworld,” “The Crown,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Feud: Bette and Joan,” and “Big Little Lies.” And, not surprisingly, they all offered stellar craftsmanship in support of their unifying themes.
“The Crown”
Showrunner Peter Morgan told IndieWire that his biggest takeaway has been the realization of the necessary bond between the monarchy and Parliament. “Sometimes the monarchy screws up and sometimes the politicians screw up,” he said. “And it takes one or the other to fix the problem.”

HBO’s sci-fi western “Westworld,” is the heavy favorite to win for contemporary and fantasy production design. The question is whether two nominations for both its western theme park and futuristic programming center actually doubles its chances — or cancels it out. Competition comes from the dystopian minimalism of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the richly Gothic “Penny Dreadful” (nominated last year), and the Vatican beauty of “The Young Pope.”
Meanwhile, the royalty glam of Peter Morgan’s “The Crown” is the heavy favorite to win for period production design, with competition from the Old Hollywood trappings of “Feud: Bette and Joan,” the nightmarish ’80s sci-fi of “Stranger Things,” the alt history of “The Man in the High Castle” (nominated last year), and perennial contender, “Masters of Sex.”

Apparently the TV Academy will only go so far in honoring sci-fi when it comes to the below-the-line craft nominations. While HBO’s “Westworld” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” deservedly snagged 12 and 11 noms, respectively, FX’s “Legion” was totally shut out. That’s right: Noah Hawley’s mind-blowing Marvel superhero deconstruction didn’t get recognition for either Michael Wylie’s eye-popping production design or Dana Gonzales’s experimental cinematography. Perhaps it was too subversive for its own good.
“Westworld” Rules
With HBO’s “Game of Thrones” out of the running this season, the void was filled by the brilliant re-imagining of Michael Crichton’s adult theme park. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy wisely took a more graphic and philosophical approach to A.I. The brutal sex and violence definitely tapped a cultural nerve.

Given the long-standing history of the Western on the big screen, how does a director of photography make the genre his own? You certainly don’t dismiss history, but rather embrace it, which is what cinematographer Paul Cameron did during the pilot episode of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s HBO TV series adaptation of Michael Crichton’s 1973 film Westworld. Retro vibes underscore the remarkable production design work on “The Crown,” “Stranger Things,” “Westworld,” “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” and “Hairspray Live!,” which all share the same goal: to humanize their worlds with imagination and relatability.
In “The Crown,” Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) endures a rite of passage inside and outside the palace that offers personal and political challenges; In “Stranger Things,” ’80s suburbia contains a mirror-image dark side. In “Westworld,” the allure of a western adult theme park cracks open violence and hate. In “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” three orphan children persevere despite being passed around from one bizarre home to another. And in “Hairspray Live!,” idealistic Tracy Turnblad (Maddie Baillio) upends segregated Baltimore by winning a dance contest.
“The Crown”
Oscar-winning production designer Martin Childs (“Shakespeare in Love”) utilized showrunner Peter Morgan’s sense of dramatic movement and sharp dialogue to make the private world of Queen Elizabeth II more intimate.

You can’t accuse HBO’s biggest drama gamble in years of playing it safe. Developed by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, “Westworld” remakes Michael Crichton’s 1973 film about a futuristic theme park as a mediation on what it means to be human — from the point of view of the robots created to populate an artificial Western world.

Late in the second episode of HBO's Westworld, set in a theme park where visitors act out Wild West fantasies with the help of lifelike robots, the park's visionary co-founder Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) dresses down Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman), a screenwriter who has planned a new storyline for the guests that leans heavily on blood and guts to dazzle them. The guests, an irritated Ford explains, don't return for the graphic violence, or any of the other obvious things the park's creative team shows them. Instead, he insists, "They come back because of the subtleties, the details. They come back because they discover something they imagine no one had ever noticed before — something they've fallen in love with. They're not looking for a story that tells them who they are. They already know who they are. They're here because they want a glimpse of who they could be.

You’ve got to hand it to the folks at Gene Autry Entertainment: they never miss a trick. Autry was a savvy businessman who owned much of his vast output including movies, television shows, and decades of radio broadcasts. Having released albums, published song folios, CDs, and DVDs, and having made long-term deals with the Encore Westerns channel, the Autry office has now brought Gene into the 21st century with his own YouTube channel. I’m especially fond of Gene’s Melody Ranch radio series, which ran for many years on CBS, and this is one source of the wonderful music you can hear online. These are live performances for a studio audience and have a different “feel” from Gene’s ...

One of my favorite books when I was a young kid was Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by author Judith Viorst (who I would learn later in life actually grew up in the same town as me). Like many of you, surely, I could easily relate to the story of a boy having an unbelievably bad day, leading to dreams of escaping off to Australia. The book has always stuck with me . so naturally it was a bit surreal when I, along with a small group of other journalists, got to visit the set of the movie adaptation of the story last summer when the production was filming in Los Angeles at the legendary Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio. Directed by Miguel Arteta (Cedar Rapids), the big screen version of the classic children.s book stars newcomer Ed Oxenbould as the 11-year-old Alexander Cooper, who...

When someone asks you if you want to ride a tank while Arnold Schwarzenegger drives it, you say yes. I don't have many hard and fast rules in life, but that's one of them. It's not a rule that I've had to put to the test many times, but last week, the moment of truth finally arrived, and so I drove down to the Lionsgate offices in Santa Monica to meet a group of fellow journalists. The savvy moviegoer is well aware of the fact that part of an actor's role in being in and making movies is promoting them. There are a variety of ways in which to do this, which most of the time involve interviews with the media, boring stuff like that. Arnold Schwarzenegger has his own tank. Why wouldn't Arnold Schwarzenegger have his own tank?
The action star and former California governor brought out his M47 Patton Tank to show film critics how he crushes old station wagons in his spare time. The testosterone-driven display was part of a press event at Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio in the Los Angeles area.

"Django Unchained" has its first poster, and fans of "Mad Men" and/or those hipster-y minimalist revisions on classic movie artwork will be delighted. Everyone else may scratch their heads wondering what the movie is actually called.
Starring Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington and a host of other famous faces, the latest film from director Quentin Tarantino tells the story of a slave (Foxx) seeking revenge against the evil plantation owner (DiCaprio) who kidnapped his wife. "Django Unchained" has previously been described as a "Southern" -- which, in Tarantino speak, is another way of saying its a Spaghetti Western set in the South.
Tarantino is taking full advantage of the film's Western roots. He shot "Django" at the famed Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita, Calif., the same place where "Deadwood" film.
"It's a blast shooting here," Tarantino said to the Los Angeles Times earlier this year.

Quentin Tarantino isn't the only one having a "blast" on the California set of "Django Unchained." It seems Tarantino's Western even has fans from as far-away as Deadwood, South Dakota. Actor Garret Dillahunt recently tweeted pictures from the Melody Ranch set of "Django," which showed a long, empty street in a no-name Western town, filled with wood buildings and -- we presume -- a saloon with swinging doors that stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx will be able to smash through. For those who have been following the film closely, you might be asking yourselves, "When did Garrett Dillahunt sign on to 'Django'?" Unfortunately, he did not. Despite Tarantino's wide-ranging cast (DiCaprio, Foxx, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, Kerry Washington, Kurt Russell, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and a whole bunch of other people), Dillahunt was there taking pictures due to his role on the now cancelled TV series "Deadwood." Apparently, the set...

Set images from Quentin Tarantino’s currently filming Django Unchained have hit the web and for those fans of the long cancelled HBO series Deadwood, you might get a sense of deja vu.

Dillahunt also got quite an emotional reaction from seeing the set again;

Django Unchained follows Django (Jamie Fox), a freed slave, who, under the protection and care of a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife (Kerry Washington) and liberating her from an evil plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio).

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that though Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained is being loosely classified as a "Southern", it nevertheless looks to be bearing all of the resemblances of a classic Western. Actor Garrett Dillahunt (Looper, Cogan's Trade) visited Tarantino's set on the famous Santa Clarita Melody Ranch - backdrop to many Hollywood westerns - and uploaded some pics to his Twitter profile. As Dillahunt nostalgically points out, the set was also home to...

[1] Those plans for David Milch's beloved Deadwood to live on in the form of a TV movie will likely never come to fruition, but fans may yet get an opportunity to revisit the Western town when Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained hits theaters at the end of this year. Actor Garret Dillahunt, who played Francis Wolcott on the HBO series, recently paid a visit to the set of Tarantino's "Southern-fried spaghetti Western" and couldn't help but notice that the setting looked awfully familiar. Check out Dillahunt's TwitPics after the jump. [gallery columns="2" orderby="title" exclude="120261"] [Garret Dillahunt's Twitter [2] via Collider [3]] Production on Django Unchained is currently underway at the Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita, where Deadwood was also filmed. Melody Ranch is just one of several area ranches often seen in Hollywood productions; Justified and True Blood are among the other projects that have shot in Santa Clarita, according to the La Times [4]. Dillahunt [5] tweeted [6] that seeing...

When casting actors for his upcoming next project, Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino wasn't hesitant to pick out a couple actors with a common link: the HBO series Deadwood. While none of the major actors from that show, like Timothy Olyphant or Ian McShane, are playing in the movie, both Dennis Christopher and Gerald McRaney had extended runs on the show, playing Bellegarde and George Hearst, respectively. But that's not the only link between the Tarantino film and the western television program. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the movie is currently in production at Santa Clarita Melody Ranch, which, you guessed it, is where they did a great deal of filming for Deadwood. Recently Garrett Dillahunt, who played Francis Wolcott on the show, took a trip up to the set of Tarantino's project (he's not in the film as far as we know) and snapped some photos, which he...

It’s finally happening; a new Quentin Tarantino is now being shot. Actor Garret Dillahunt was on said location yesterday and tweeted a few pictures of the set. Thanks to Bleeding Cool for the tip, which doesn’t feature any actors, but we can get a sense for the elaborate town Tarantino and crew are using. In his tweets, Dillahunt remarked how much it reminded him of his Deadwood days, also shot on Santa Clarita Melody Ranch.
Previously, Tarantino was on location at Mammoth Lakes, CA and will then move on to New Orleans for the rest of the shoot after filming concludes at the ranch. Tarantino recently told the La Times that, “It’s a blast shooting here. Most other western towns look like dollhouses. This has the complete look. It’s fantastic.” Check out the photos below to get a taste of what to expect, location-wise.

I’m clearly in the minority when it comes to the great director’s most recent film Inglourious Basterds. There have been many nights (usually involving beer) where my colleague Andy and I have delightfully debated the pros and cons of Tarantino‘s WWII opus. I regularly argue for the fact that the film was ruined by the use of such things as the “Hugo Stiglitz” Montage, the Samuel L. Jackson narrated celluloid fact speech, the arrows and names pointing to people in the finale, and the most unbearable for me, the completely out of left field use of David Bowie’s song from Cat People (“Putting Out The Fire”) towards the climax of the film. These are just a handful of numerous wrong moments for me in what could have been a great film. Now, it seems that the director might take up the idea of incorporating a song...

Precious little is known about Quentin Tarantino's upcoming "Django Unchained" beyond its absurd cast (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kerry Washington and more), its basic plot outline (a slave named Django seeks revenge on the man who kidnapped his wife) and its Christmas Day release. Now, one more slight detail has emerged: Tarantino is shooting the film on a ranch set in Santa Clarita and having a ball. Tarantino's latest was recently filming at the Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita, Calif., one of about 10 movie ranches in the area that have been home to such productions as "Old Yeller," "The Muppets" and even some Super Bowl commercials. "It's a blast shooting here," Tarantino said to the Los Angeles Times in a break from shooting. "Most other western towns look like dollhouses. This has the complete look. It's fantastic.

There’s an A.C. Lyles Building at the Paramount Pictures main lot, but you won’t find A.C. Lyles there; his office is on the fourth floor of the William S. Hart Building.
When I arrived for our interview, Mr. Lyles was chatting with some visitors in his outer office. He bid me into his main office, and asked his assistant Pam to put in a video… a short promo reel that opens with a six minute tribute by then-President Ronald Reagan, who warmly recalls his and Nancy’s many years of friendship with A.C. and his wife Martha, and congratulates A.C. on his fifty years at the studio. The President’s intro is followed by taped congratulations from President Carter, President Ford, and Vice President Bush, then assorted clips celebrating Mr.

Dancer Ann Miller, one of the most memorable stars of musicals during their golden era in the 40s and 50s, died Thursday in Los Angeles of lung cancer; she was 81. A dark-haired beauty with legs that literally went up to there, Miller began her professional dancer as a child, taking dance lessons to help straighten her legs after a bout with rickets. She signed with RKO in 1937, when she was a mere 14, appearing in New Faces of 1937 and as part of the ensemble cast of Stage Door. Her fast-tapping talents . she claimed a record-holding 500 taps a minute . won her a string of roles in musicals for RKO and Republic, including Melody Ranch and Hit Parade of 1941. When the "golden era" of MGM musicals came along in the late 40s, Miller was too old to play the ingénue, but that didn't keep her from taking on memorable, second-lead roles in films like Easter Parade (where she was a last-minute substitute for Cyd Charisse, who broke her leg), The Kissing Bandit, On the Town, and her crowning achievement, Kiss Me, Kate, where she sang and danced the legendary number, "Too Darn Hot." During her years at MGM, she dated studio mogul Louis B. Mayer, but declined his offer of marriage. When the popularity of big-budget dance musicals declined in the late 50s, Miller pretty much ended her film career, but continued working extensively in television and on the stage. She experienced a second wave of popularity in the late 70s when she starred opposite Mickey Rooney in the Broadway show Sugar Babies, which toured extensively throughout the 80s; she later remarked that the show helped her become financially independent. Eschewing modern films because of their emphasis on sex and nudity, she made a brief but memorable return in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, her last screen credit. --Prepared by IMDb staff...
