On Monday night in North Hollywood, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences hosted a night devoted to how the television landscape has advanced (or not advanced as in some cases) in the 10 years since the book The Prime Time Closet: A History Of Gays and Lesbians On TV was first published. The book, written by Stephen Tropiano, highlighted the landmarks of gay representation on the small screen.
The panel included Dan Bucatinsky (Scandal), Andrew Rannells (The New Normal, Girls), Amber Tamblyn (plays a lesbian on Two And A Half Men), Sherri Saum (The Fosters), Wilson Cruz (GLAAD, My So Called Life), trans actress Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black), Sean Hemeon (Husbands) and executives from Bravo and Here TV.

Laura talks us through the many joys of Jane Espenson and Brad Bell's totes adorbs web comedy, Husbands...
A couple of years ago, I was wandering around San Diego Comic-Con when I stumbled across a signing going on at the California Browncoats table. There sat Jane Espenson - writer for wonderful treats like Buffy, Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood, and Once Upon a Time - with two young men. I sidled up to one of the guys and asked what the signing was for. Husbands, he told me, a webseries comedy about marriage equality.
The three of them agreed to an interview (how could I pass up an opportunity to interview Espenson on one of her new projects?) and we talked about their plans for the show they were just about to shoot. Set just after marriage equality becomes law across the entire United States (and thus still,...

The CW has long had a significant presence in the world of original web series, and its latest project will increase its involvement in the online video. The TV network has launched CW Seed, an online-only studio and distribution platform. At launch, the CW Seed slate includes four new comedy series; the most prominent of these debuts is Husbands, which kicked off its second season exclusively on the new platform. Picking up where season one left off, the new episode begins with Cheeks (Brad Bell) running from the altar with his husband Brady (Sean Hemeon) chasing after him. Oh, and Seth Green plays the wedding's priest, because why not. Bell also posted the season two trailer to his personal YouTube channel: The other three debuts are also comedies, as CW Seed seems to be taking the Amazon Studios approach to content production. The most intriguing concept is Backpackers, where a...

One of the Internet's most beloved gay web series, "Husbands" is about to return for a third season. This time, however, it's making the leap to The CW's new online platform, CW Seed. To celebrate this, The CW has released a new trailer and poster which should delight fans of the series.
"Husbands" stars Brad Bell and Sean Hemeon as a gay couple who accidentally get married during a drunken binge, and decide to stay together to prove that same-sex marriage can be successful. Producer and co-creator Jane Espenson ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Battlestar Galactica") along with co-creator and star Bell prove that an intelligent, well-written gay web series can work, with the show receiving accolades from publications like The New Yorker and The Onion's A.V. We relayed the news to you back in March that Jane Espenson and Brad “Cheeks” Bell’s critically acclaimed web series Husbands would be making the jump from YouTube to the CW Digital. This week, word just broke at San Diego Comic-Con that the program about about the aftermath of an unplanned, spur-of-the-moment wedding in Las Vegas (that just so happens to be between two men) will bow its upcoming third season on the newly rebranded CW Seed. And the posters exist to prove it. As does a preview: Weekly episodes of the upcoming season are slated to run about eight-minutes apiece and will feature Amy Acker, Beth Grant, Michael Hogan, and Seth Green, in addition to series regulars Bell, Sean Hemeon, and Allesandra Torresani. Husbands will be joined by a handful of other online original series on CW Seed. The destination housed under Cwtv.com is the broadcast television...

Amy Acker is a very important actress in my eyes. I came to know her through the works of Joss Whedon, but since then I’ve seen her working on other projects not associated with Whedon and she’s really dazzled me. She’s just so… creepy. When she started recurring on Person of Interest, I thought she was the best thing to ever happen to that series. She has a way of delivering lines that make her seem whimsically detached from reality, as if she were living in her own little world no one else can see. And because I witnessed that performance, I know she’ll be absolutely perfect for the part she’s taken in Husbands.
It’s no surprise Acker has made her way to Husbands, a web series from Jane Espenson and Brad Bell. Through out the shows first two seasons, a number of frequent...

Teen Wolf is going to a full throated howl on same-sex loving this season. We already know that Danny will be dating one of the Alpha Twins played by Max and Charlie Carver, but we didn't know how far they might take it. Jeff Davis says there will be some only-on-cable scenes between the boys. "I can't say we go to Spartacus levels, but their sex scenes are treated just like any other sex scenes you've seen on our show. I've always thought that if you present this idealized world where young gay men and women are no different from anyone else, and it's not really questioned by the other characters, maybe life starts to imitate art and you begin to see that in the real world."

Dark Horse Comics released a digital comics adaptation series of the wildly popular web sitcom Husbands last fall, and now Jane Espenson and Brad Bell will hit the road in conjunction with the full collection’s release on March 27.

TVLand has picked up the Kirstie Alley comedy Big Baby (renamed to Kirstie's New Show) to series. It reunites Ally with her Cheers costar Rhea Perlman and follows Alley as a Broadway star whose life is turned upside down when her long lost son turns up looking for a connection after his adopted mother dies.
Belarus is cracking down on gay activists, raiding clubs, confiscating passports as the nation looks for a scapegoat to keep their leader in power after 18 years.
I'm trying to find the newsworthiness of this study that links the rise in HIV infections in gay and bisexual to more men having unprotected sex? Isn't that generally how it happens? And it needs to stop.
Gay journalist and Superman fan Glen Weldon tells NPR that he won't be reading the comic penned by Orson Scott Card. "Superman is an ideal. He represents our best self. That's what he's for.

Bent-Con 2012 is now over. And while it was hard work for all the people that made it possible, I can say that what they did was magnificent. It was a delightful weekend filled with panels, movies, costumes and great people. The third annual event was held at the Marriot Convention Center here in Burbank. And while California is known for its sun and warmth, this weekend turned out to be damp and cool, with some rain, some sun, some drizzle, some clouds, some bears, some twinks and some clouds. And some rain, did I mention that?
I’ll be posting a few pictures over the coming days of the event, some cheeky, some cool and some just for the heck of it:
Husbands: The Series stars Sean Hemeon, Brad “Cheeks” Bell (also co-creator and writer) and writer/co-creator Jane Espenson were there to talk, visit, sign and take photographs with fans.

Bent-Con 2012 was held at the Marriot Hotel & Convention Center in Burbank in sunny California. Well, the truth of the matter is that it was a cool, damp weekend here. While it did not rain consistently, the drops fell from the sky in drips and drabs. It also misted, like on a hot day at Disneyland and they turn on the “steamers” to help make sure their guests don’t melt into puddles of goo. But fun was had by all, and here begins the first of a few posts showing what went this past weekend.
The award winning cast and writers of Husbands: The Series graced Bent-Con 2012 will their loveliness. Actors Sean Hemeon, Brad “Cheeks” Bell (who also co-wrote and created the series) and co-writer/creator Jane Espenson talked, took photographs with fans and signed autographs. They were a delight to behold.

Whedonverse veteran Jane Espenson is very familiar with the comic book world – the TV writer/producer has been involved with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” comics for years. So when her web series “Husbands” started attracting a lot of attention, the idea of a new comic seemed perfectly logical.
“People were making jokes about my sci-fi connections,” says Espenson, who created “Husbands” with Brad “Cheeks” Bell. “We got a lot of interview questions of people winkingly going, ‘What’s next – Husbands in space?’ And it started sounding good!”
“Husbands” follows a newly-hitched couple, actor Cheeks (Bell) and athlete Brady (Sean Hemeon), as they deal with the challenges of being gay, famous and married. After the show’s second season wrapped, Bell and Espenson started scripting a six-issue Dark Horse digital comic.

We're chatting with Brad "Cheeks" Bell, Jane Espenson and Sean Hemeon about the new Husbands Comic Book being released today by Dark Horse.
AfterElton: With the success of the Husbands series, why did you decide to create a comic book?
Cheeks: It's an underserved market, and the response we've received to the series made us want to keep bringing content that people wanted to see.
AfterElton: So why did you choose to set it in an alternate universe where people have superpowers?
Jane Espenson: It was a good fit for a comic book. You can go places, do things, show things that you could never do in a series. Plus, I love metaphorical storytelling.
Cheeks: I wanted a framing device to connect the two worlds, because otherwise it would be really awkward. What does Husbands the Comic look like?...

Jane Espenson is a very busy woman.
The writer/producer has worked on such favorites as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls and Battlestar Galactica. These days, she serves as co-creator of the Web series Husbands and consulting producer on Once Upon a Time.
At New York Comic-Con, TV Fanatic chatted with Espenson, Brad Bell and Sean Hemeon about Husbands; and now we present another portion of that interview, as Espenson answers questions about what viewers can expect in the near future on Once Upon a Time Season 2...

Already a hit Web series, Husbands is set to take the comic book universe and charity world by storm in the coming weeks.
Written and created by Brad Bell (who stars as the character of Cheeks) and Jane Espenson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Torchwood, Once Upon a Time), Husbands recently completed its second season and focuses on a gay couple that drunkenly got married after just a few weeks of dating.
In the following interview, conducted yesterday at New York Comic-Con, TV Fanatic speaks to Espenson, Bell and costar Sean Hemeon about the show's upcoming comic book (out October 24!) and November 11 charity event, in which the team will head to Salt Lake City, screen an episode of Husbands and speak to Glbt youth in the area to help them understand that they aren't alone.

Extreme homophobe Rep. Allen West is running an ad claiming his opponent Patrick Murphy voted to cut $700 billion from Medicare. The major problem with this is that Murphy has never been elected to Congress, and so hasn't voted on anything yet. This is where we are with politics.

Last week I received a note from Team Husbands: Jane Espenson, Brad Bell and Sean Hemeon. They had news they wanted to share. Husbands has always been about laughter and change, but the problem is that some things just don’t change fast enough. So Sean, Brad and Jane are going out into the real world to effect that change.
Sean Hemeon: Do you remember in Salt Lake City there was a station that refused to carry The New Normal?
AfterElton: Yes. And it had to be picked up by the local CW affiliate.
Sean: Ann from the Youth Homeless Resource Center there in Salt Lake City reached out to us and asked if we could do something, send a video or something to help raise money...

Even though the quote is from 2011, GQ found it worth revisiting what Javier Bardem said when Spain achieved marriage equality. "In a deeply Catholic country, he's an atheist. ('I've always said I don't believe in God, I believe in Al Pacino.') When gay marriage was legalized in Spain in 2005, he was quoted as saying that if he was gay, 'I would get married tomorrow, just to f*ck with the Church.'"

When talking about the new split perspective season of Glee, co-creator Ian Brennan says something that I'm sure will rile our fans up. "Rachel, like it or not, is really the core of the show. She's sort of like the ultimate underdog and it felt weird to pull her out of that. She's part of this continuous story. ... You want to actually see, 'What does that mean once you leave that womb?' Rachel goes from being a big fish in a small pond to a very small fish in the biggest pond ever." Only because you insist on shoving her down our throats.

Australian rugby player David Pocock challenged former tennis player John Alexander, who is now a minister of Parliament, on gay marriage. “The biggest thing in this debate is that we’re dealing with people here. And how can you blame someone for what they are? People don’t choose their sexuality and we marginalise the Lgbti community for what they are. I think that this is a conversation that needs to be had and that needs to be discussed compassionately and actually come to something that’s reasonable. And in my mind, that’s marriage for everyone. We’ve moved forward on so many issues and this is the next progression.”

The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills hosted the Season 2 premiere of Husbands last Monday night, making the online sitcom the first web series to be so honored by the good people at Paley West. The series, co-created by veteran television writer Jane Espenson and YouTube sensation Brad “Cheeks” Bell, continues where Season 1 left off. Newlyweds Brady (Sean Hemeon) and Cheeks (Bell) are working on their marriage with the not always helpful, but always humorous advice of their friend Haley (Alessandra Torresani) and several impressive guest stars. Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Comic-Con Sundays are typically light on horror, and this year is no exception although once again our favorite panel, "Supernatural", is heading to Hall H. Here are the genre highlights as well as info on the 36th annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive.
One thing we can't stress enough is to keep checking the Sdcc website for updates as nothing's set in stone until the event actually starts happening.

Did we mention you will get some cool stuff just for showing up and being Strange?...

It’s a familiar tabloid story: Out of nowhere two celebs get married, and the media explodes with speculation and judgment. But what if one of them was an out-and-proud TV star and the other played for the L.A. Dodgers — the first openly gay pro baseball player ever?
That’s the premise of Husbands, the web series from Once Upon a Time, Battlestar Galactica, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer Jane Espenson and actor and YouTube star Brad “Cheeks” Bell. The first 11 episodes premiered last fall to wide acclaim — that’s no exaggeration, it got a rave from The...
