One thing that’s great about the era we’re living in is that fiction has the ability to spread across various forms of media. A story that would have previously been told in only a movie can now have its world expanded upon in novels, video games or, in the case of The Great Wall: Last Survivor, a graphic novel.
Seeing as how the first quarter of 2017 is ripe with prequel comics with both Riverdale and 24: Legacy getting similar treatment, this lead-in to the theatrical release comes at a very opportune time. If anything, it looks to match its cinematic counterpart’s exquisite use of color and dazzling visual effects in an attempt to enrich this fantastical vision.

Tom Cruise has returned to a strong no. 1 position at the domestic box office, enjoying his biggest North American debut weekend in no less than seven years. According to weekend -- April 19-21 -- actuals found on the web site Box Office Mojo, the Joseph Kosinski-directed Oblivion, based on a graphic novel co-written by the director, earned a highly respectable $37.05 million at 3,783 venues; that figure includes $1.1 million from late Thursday and midnight screenings. The movie averaged $9,795 per theater. (Pictured above: Cruise is back on top in the sci-fier Oblivion.) That is quite an impressive domestic debut, especially taking into account the following: The movie is not a sequel; it is not in ticket-price-boosting 3D; it received very mixed reviews -- among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics, it has a mediocre 53% approval rating and 5.7/10 average; and had strong competition from American TV thanks to the round-the-clock televised hunt for the surviving Boston marathon terrorist.

Kosinski's Mind-boggling Sci-Fier to Boast Cruise's Biggest Domestic Box-Office Debut Weekend Since 2006?: Tom Cruise is no longer the superstar he used to be -- well, in case you believe the United States and Canada represent the whole world. (More information on Cruise's international b.o. allure further down.) Since J.J. Abrams' thriller Mission: Impossible III back in '06, only one Cruise movie in wide release has opened with more than $25 million at the North American box office: Brad Bird's fourquel Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which brought in $29.55 million on its second weekend (and first in wide release) on Christmas weekend 2011. This weekend (April 19-21), Cruise returns to American and Canadian screens with Joseph Kosinski's "original" sci-fier Oblivion; initial (Friday) results have surpassed studio predictions and, for that matter, the predictions of most pundits. Chicago – “Oblivion” is a Pyrrhic victory that wins its battle, but loses the overall war. While this is the kind of visual production value you’d expect on a $120 million budget, an ostentatious steak dinner in the special effects department never makes up for a story that tastes more like cheap ramen noodles.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
In an expensive film of this grandiose scale, neither can it afford to insult you with oversimplification nor overly complicate itself beyond your ability to reasonably comprehend it. While “Oblivion” from “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski definitely doesn’t pander to the simple minded, its slipshod story devolves into a sci-fi discombobulation that gets lost in its own twists and turns.
“Oblivion” draws inspiration from more than two handfuls of other major films. For starters, “Prometheus” – though its story line is literally in another world – feels similar to “Oblivion” in terms of its majestic environments and its overall loneliness.

Joseph Kosinski returns behind the camera this month to bring us Oblivion, his anticipated sci-fi/action blockbuster with Tom Cruise front and centre in the lead.
Marking only his second feature as a director, Oblivion has a lot of potential for so many reasons, and it’s finally arrived on our shores here in the UK today. After catching a rather awesome IMAX poster for the movie last week, the studio have now released three great new featurettes, taking us behind the scenes of the blockbuster.
On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Joseph Kosinski’s anticipated sci-fi/action blockbuster, Oblivion, is less than a week away from hitting our shores, and I’m really looking forward to seeing Kosinski return behind the camera after his awesome 2010 debut, Tron: Legacy.
Tom Cruise is front and centre here for Kosinski, and I have a feeling this is going to be very big at the box office on both sides of the Atlantic in the coming weeks.
We’ve recently been treated to a brilliant new IMAX featurette, along with now being able to stream the entire Oblivion score by M83. And with its release imminent, a new IMAX poster has surfaced online.

Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion is less than a week from hitting cinemas in the UK, and two weeks out from its Us release date, and things are definitely looking good for the sci-fi blockbuster.
Kosinski made a remarkable debut with Tron: Legacy a few years back, and I can’t wait to see his sophomore effort.

We’re just a few weeks out from seeing Oblivion hit theatres, and I’m really looking forward to seeing Joseph Kosinski return behind the camera here.

I continue to be optimistic about the new Tom Cruise movie from Joseph Kosinski, sci-fi actioner "Oblivion," even though the director's debut film was 2010 "Tron: Legacy." Why the optimism? Well, given that it was the videogame pioneer's first film under a neophyte management team at Disney, he did Ok. He clearly has visual chops--aided here by "Life of Pi" Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda. Kosinski wrote the graphic novel on which the movie is based with Arvid Nelson, and co-wrote the script with William Monahan ("The Departed"). Michael Arndt ("Toy Story 3," "Little Miss Sunshine") also reportedly gave the script a polish. Monahan and Arndt are both excellent scribes. Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough and Melissa Leo also star. The parts of the film that weren't created in a computer were shot near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Check out the new featurette on Yahoo! Movies, with interviews with Cruise and Kosinski...

He's flown into the Danger Zone. He's gone on four missions thought impossible. He's been a rock star, a Nazi, a vampire, and a samurai. Now Tom Cruise will be asked to save mankind in director Joseph Kosinski's follow-up to Tron: Legacy, a sci-fi thriller called Oblivion. Based on the comic book penned by Kosinski and Arvid Nelson, Oblivion is set in a far and dystopian future, and centers on Jack Harper (Cruise), a court marshaled veteran turned repairman stationed on what remains of Earth. A place of ruins and death, Jack thinks he's alone on this world, save for his mission's partner, Victoria (Andrea Riseborough). But then he stumbles across a discovery that alters his perception and could change the fate of mankind forever. The first official trailer for director Joseph Kosinski's ('Tron: Legacy') latest sci-fi project 'Oblivion' has arrived featuring all the expected sequences of Tom Cruise jumping around doing what he does best. The new visually appealing trailer looks pretty decent although scarily appears to reflect certain plot points first featured in Pixar's award-winning animation flick 'Wall-e'. Nevertheless we hope that the movie based on the comic book by helmer Kosinski and Arvid Nelson will be anything but. French stunner Olga Kurylenko -below ('Quantum of Solace') co-stars with Cruise and the hot on-screen couple are joined by Morgan Freeman ('Seven'), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ('Game of Thrones'), Melissa Leo ('Red State'), Zoe Bell ('Death Proof', 'Raze'), Dane Cook ('Detention') and Andrea Riseborough ('Brighton Rock') all co-star. ‘Oblivion’ Poster: An Earth That Has “Evolved Beyond Recognition” (And Looks Awesome While Doing It)
No matter how audiences felt about Joseph Kosinski‘s Tron: Legacy (point of fact, this writer did not feel particularly good about it), the film is undeniably a treat for the eyes, so it’s no surprise that Kosinski’s latest outing, Oblivion, already manages to look like a visual feast from a one-sheet poster alone. The Tom Cruise-starrer is based on Kosinski’s (and Arvid Nelson‘s) own graphic novel, and centers on “a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, [where] one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.” The film also stars Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo. We’ll get our first look at the film’s trailer on Sunday but, for now, this poster is jaw-dropping enough. Oblivion will be released exclusively in IMAX on April 12, 2013, with a wide release following on April...

It's been several years now since we've heard any updates about the rumored "Thulsa Doom" movie, of which Djimon Hounsou was said to star in and produce. Thulsa Doom, of course, being the sinister sorcerer played by James Earl Jones in the original "Conan the Barbarian." In a recent interview with Hounsou, we found out what the deal is with the "Thulsa Doom" movie.
"I’m still trying to get somebody interested in it," Hounsou told MTV News regarding the project. "I certainly have been working on it for some time. It’s written and I’ve just been trying to put it together."
"It’s sort of like one of my projects; I put my own money on it and it’s sitting there for now," he added. "There are other projects that I’m also trying to get going as well and, like those projects,...

Here's a few photo's from the set of Joseph Kosinski's (Tron Legacy) sci-fi film project Oblivion giving us our first look at Tom Cruise and Olga Kurylenko. The scene being shot here takes place at the foot of the Empire State Building. In the film Cruise plays “a soldier who’s stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view.”
This is a very interesting and cool story, and I think Kosinski is going to do a great job brining it to the big screen. He's an amazing visual director so we know the movie will look good. I just hope the script is better than what we got with Tron: Legacy. The movie also stars Melissa Leo, Morgan Freeman,...

Rex Mundi will return in the pages of Dark Horse Presents. Dark Horse Comics has announced a new storyline from creator Arvid Nelson for its anthology, as well as two new hardback collections of the existing material. Rex Mundi is set in an alternate history of Europe where the Catholic church holds dominance and magic is a very real power. Set in 1933, the murder mystery begins with the theft of a medieval scroll for a Paris church, leading Dr Julien Saunière into a conspiracy that centres around the Holy Grail. "I'm thrilled Dark Horse is making Rex Mundi available in an omnibus format - it's (more)...

Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is set to co-star alongside Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, and Olga Kurylenko in the upcoming Joseph Kosinski-directed film Oblivion.
The movie is based on an original idea that Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) made into a graphic novel. In the film Cruise will play a soldier who’s stuck alone on a planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view. According to Deadline, "Coster-Waldau will play Sykes, a battle-hardened, physically imposing, intelligent and extremely athletic military technology and weapons expert."
I loved what Kosinski did with the world of Tron, and I'm excited to see what he ends up doing with this film concept. It definitely has a very epic setting, and it sounds pretty ambitious. I...

Talk about cinematic whiplash. Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinksi‘s next project has already gone through myriad incarnations, and the project doesn’t even have an official name yet. Count that as one of the incarnations, I guess, because it’s already had two names and is currently title-less, despite the fact that it’s an adaptation of a graphic novel that Kosinski himself has supposedly written that, you guessed it, has a title. Kosinksi conceived of and wrote the graphic novel, known as “Oblivion,” with Arvid Nelson for Radical Publishing, and the book was the primed for a film adaptation before it even hit the page. The story is set in a future where the Earth has been irradiated to the point that humanity can no longer inhabit it, and follows a man who lives “above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a...

Actually, director Joseph Kosinski's upcoming sci-fi epic isn't called "Oblivion" any more. Nor is it called "Horizons" any more, either.
However, even though it currently doesn't have a title, this upcoming sci-fi epic now has two leading ladies: Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough, according to Variety.
Kurylenko, who recently played a Bond Girl in "Quantum of Solace," is taking the role to which Jessica Chastain was originally attached. Chastain has finally shown that she can't be in every movie, as production on "Oblivion" (we're calling it that until Kosinski and Cruise tell us otherwise) conflicts with Kathryn Bigelow's Osama bin Laden film (hey, that movie doesn't have a title, either!).
Riseborough will be making her American film debut with "Oblivion," having previously appeared in Brit pics such as "Never Let Me Go" and Madonna's "W.E." According to The Playlist, she reportedly beat out such high-profile competitors as Diane Kruger,...

[1] Apparently Joseph Kosinski's Horizons (a.k.a. Oblivion) is the plum gig for actresses in Hollywood right now. Last month, Jessica Chastain beat out [2] a list of up-and-coming actresses -- including Olga Kurylenko, Brit Marling, Noomi Rapace, and Olivia Wilde -- for one of two lead female roles; this weekend, Hayley Atwell, Diane Kruger, and Kate Beckinsale will vie for the other. Whoever lands the sci-fi flick will be starring opposite Tom Cruise, who leads the cast as soldier and drone repairman Jak. Most details after the jump. Deadline [3] writes that the three actresses will be reading with Cruise for the part this weekend in Pittsburgh, where the actor is currently shooting [4] Christopher McQuarrie's Lee Childs adaptation One Shot. Kosinski's film was renamed [5] as Horizons a few months back, but the new story refers to it by its old title Oblivion -- I'm not sure if that's just...

Get ready to hear the name “Jessica Chastain” much more in the coming months (a little bird tells me that you can even expect to see a couple of reviews for a Chastain film on this very site within the next few days). The actress is set for the big leagues, thanks to being plucked from relative obscurity by Terrence Malick to star in his The Tree of Life that finally opened earlier this year, followed by roles in Take Shelter, The Debt, Texas Killing Fields, and the upcoming star-fest that is The Wettest County. Now Chastain has landed a prime leading lady position opposite Tom Cruise in Joseph Kosinski’s sci-f film that is…well, apparently without a title as of now. But you may know it as Oblivion or Horizons. Let’s call it Obli-zons and be done with it. Tron: Legacy director Kosinski is helming the film is based on an upcoming graphic novel...

Jessica Chastain's star continues to rise. The actress shot two films some time ago (The Debt and The Tree of Life) which both saw release this year along with Take Shelter, Wilde Salome, The Help, Texas Killing Fields and Coriolanus. That's a lot of late-2011 exposure for an actress that was basically an unknown to the public as recently as this past May, even if much of it is only via festival appearances. She's also shot roles in The Wettest County in the World and Terrence Malick's next film, and is set for the film Mama. And now she's been tapped to co-star with Tom Cruise in Joseph Kosinski's Tron Legacy follow-up Horizons. (Once titled Oblivion.) We know now that Chastain will have one of two roles, but not yet which one. Here's the plot: In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition,...

Briefly: You can probably call this the constant lineup of actresses that will test or be wishlisted for a great many lead female roles over the next year. Variety [1] reports that Joeseph Kosinski is testing Jessica Chastain, Olga Kurylenko, Brit Marling, Noomi Rapace and Olivia Wilde for the lead female role opposite [2] Tom Cruise in his latest film. The movie has been called Oblivion, and at once point looked like it would be renamed Horizons. When it moved [3] to Universal from Disney, Oblivion was the title in play once more, but it looks like they're going back to Horizons for the time being. Tom Cruise signs up for a mission in the future through "Oblivion". In the sci-fi film, Cruise will be directed by "Tron Legacy" helmer Joseph Kosinski who came up with the story and developed it into a graphic novel with writer Arvid Nelson and illustrator Andree Wallin.
The pic is "set in a future where the Earth's surface has been irradiated beyond recognition and the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak (Cruise) discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows."
Kosinski said he envisioned the movie as "a very spare science fiction film with a small cast but big ideas and big landscapes." The PG-13 project would start shooting in October with $100 million budget from Universal.

Tom Cruise has been tapped to star in the film adaptation of the Oblivion prose book published by Radical Publishing. Joe Kosinski (Tron Legacy) will direct the $100 million budgeted PG-13 film. Deadline reported the news Friday afternoon. The film was originally set to be a Disney film after they purchased the rights last year. But when the land of Mickey wanted to tone down the film to a PG rating, Kosinski did not want to make that compromise and was allowed to shop it to other studios and found a suitor at Universal.
Oblivion is a massive sci-fi story set in 2031 about a burnt-out Earth inundated by ferocious aliens called Scavangers. Humans were forced to flee to a giant space station where they wiped out most of the Scavangers. The last remaining Scavs have dug into the crust of the planet where drones are sent down to hunt them down and wipe them completely out.

Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion (or Horizons as its being called) now has a star and its Tom Cruise. Filming is looking for Fall 2011, as Universal is looking at. The name of Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski was attached to the big screen adaptation of the Arvid Nelson graphic novel Oblivion as far back as July of last year and while the premise of humans escaping the scorched ruins of Earth’s surface to live in the clouds is intriguing Universal needed more than ‘From the director of Tron: Legacy’ to plaster over the poster to draw in the crowds.

Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski has officially cast Tom Cruise in his upcoming sci-fi film project Oblivion. Cruise will play “a soldier who’s stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view.” There's been talk of Cruise to be up for the leading role for awhile, but now it's official. The actor was supposed to star in Guillermo Del Toro’s At the Mountains of Madness, but that fell through, and it gave him the time to do this. I think Cruise is a great choice for this film, it will be cool to see him dive into some fun sci-fi stuff again. Just think of how awesome he was in Minority Report.

Joseph Kosinski's post-Tron Legacy project, Oblivion, is now a 'go' picture. Universal will now make the film, which has had Cruise rumored [2] to star, and is starting to look like the replacement for Guillermo Del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness, for which Cruise was also the lead candidate to star. But this is a slightly less expensive film than Mountains was turning into; Oblivion will be made for a relatively paltry $100m. As far as we know the project is still working from...
