This review has a mild Bird Box: Barcelona spoiler.
Is Bird Box a movie franchise? More precisely, is Bird Box essentially a shared cinematic universe? Netflix obviously thinks so, as this weekend’s Bird Box: Barcelona acts as both a spinoff and a naked bit of franchise world-building after the original Bird Box movie took streaming subscribers by storm… for a couple of weeks in December 2018, at any rate. Yet I might argue that it’s unclear whether that film scored with audiences because of its grindhouse-adjacent premise or simply due to it being a high-concept movie starring Sandra Bullock that was released during the doldrums of a holiday season.
Since then we’ve seen a lot of Netflix thrillers led by movie stars taking a streaming paycheck, and few have had the impact of Bird Box. Maybe that’s why the film’s ostensible sequel is trying to do the same thing again,...

Plot: After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.
Review: Released eight months after John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, Bird Box became a hit for Netflix. In the five years since Susanne Bier’s film debuted, author Josh Malerman has penned a sequel novel while a film follow-up has been in development. The first of multiple global spin-offs, Bird Box Barcelona continues the tale of supernatural entities that force people to commit grisly suicide. Existing in the same post-apocalyptic universe as the Sandra Bullock-led hit film, Bird Box Barcelona manages to weave a distinct story while unveiling new details about the monstrous beings by taking the story in an unexpected direction.

Our favoruite Spanish Brothers, David Pastor and Àlex Pastor, took a break from post-apocalyptic movies over the last few years, but the duo are back, directing an all new supernatural Pa thriller based in the universe of Netflix's hugely popular Bird Box called "A ciegas" (aka "Blindly").
Bird Box's surprising success apparently prompted Netflix and the producers Dylan Clark the Chris Morgan to consider starting a franchise that adapts the premise of the original film to different parts of the world, in films shot in the languages ??of each country and with local teams and casts. The streaming sector may be growing ever more crowded as increasing numbers of providers embrace the video-on-demand model of content distribution, but industry pioneer Netflix continues to dominate in terms of original content and more than double the subscribers of its nearest competitor, Disney+. And in March of 2020, those 62 million subscribers have a lot of compelling movies and series to look forward to, both original and imported.
In terms of weekly series, Crash Landing On You, the second-highest-rated Korean drama in cable television history after Sky Castle, and Chinese romcom Find Yourself both begin airing new episodes on Sundays in March, while the South Korean series Itaewon Class, the first project from distribution company Showbox, premieres new episodes on Fridays.
The first of the month, meanwhile, marks the first big release of material, including:

An upcoming episode of Syfy’s future-set drama “Incorporated” begins with this: a carbon copy of the sort of starving children ads that Sally Struthers used to host in the 1990s. There’s a wistful little boy staring at the camera as he strokes his battered stuffed toy and a pleading, pitying narrator explaining how he and other children like him go days without food or clean water.
Here’s the twist: The little boy’s name is Johnny, and the narrator is speaking Chinese. For 100 yuan a day, generous Chinese souls can help the children of a broken America in the year 2073. Watching that cold open at this exact moment in our history is science fiction that might be a little too real. You can forget about “The Walking Dead” or “The Exorcist”: “Incorporated” may be the scariest show on television.

Debuting on November 30 on Syfy, Incorporated paints a familiar picture of a dystopian future where big business controls almost everything, the world is ravaged, and the line between the haves and the have-nots is stark and harsh. Despite a strong performance from Dennis Haysbert as a security heavy for multi-national Spiga Biotech and the appearance of Julia Ormond as the company boss, the series created by David and Alex Pastor and executive produced by Ben Affleck…...

Three episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
It’s somewhere around the explanation of Incorporated‘s bifurcated future world, wherein unemployed urchins rule the slums and sleek worker bees look down their noses from glossy high-rises, that Syfy’s new show peaks creatively. The vision echoes the futures of plenty of other sci-fi works (weirdly, I was reminded of the Ethan Hawke, us-vs-them vampire flick Daybreakers), but it has undeniably interesting ideas of its own.
Unfortunately, that exact moment where the show peaks creatively is in an opening credits scroll; the subsequent story navigating us through Incorporated‘s potentially bountiful near-future is sluggish and, as far as duplicitous business thrillers go, inert. Incorporated falls further along the high-quality end of the Syfy spectrum than, say, Aftermath or Hunters, but it’s far short of the network’s current best: The Expanse and The Magicians. An interesting world worth getting lost...

Don’t expect to see flying cars or lots of lasers on “Incorporated.”
Instead, Syfy’s latest futuristic series set in 2074 features very accessible technology, such as self-driving cars and wearable tech, that only appear a step or two beyond what we have today. That familiarity makes “Incorporated’s” grimmer aspects of the future seem all too plausible. It’s a world where natural food resources and clean water are dwindling and have created fierce competition.

This identity-swap sci-fi drama fails on every level, in spite of Ben Kingsley and Ryan Reynolds in the central roles
Ben Kingsley gets joint top billing but takes an early bath in this tiresome tale of an ageing executive who pays to have his dying soul transplanted into the body of a younger man. Enter Ryan Reynolds as the empty vessel into which Sir Ben’s spirit is magnetically injected – only to discover that this new body has a mind and memory of its own. Or, as Derek Luke puts it: “You thought you were buying a new car, turns out it has a few miles on the clock.” Recycling riffs from John Frankenheimer’s superior 1966 thriller Seconds (which in turn inspired Face/Off), Tarsem Singh’s dopey romp signally fails to mine the identity-swap promise of its premise. David and Alex Pastor’s script may be lumpen, but Reynolds...

Michael Sheen ("Tron Legacy," "Masters of Sex") is set to join Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt in Morten Tyldum's sci-fi feature "Passengers" at Sony Pictures. Sheen will play the voice of the robot traveling with the lead characters.

As far as high concepts go, Ben Kingsley and Ryan Reynolds playing the same person isn't a bad start. But this switcherooo turns out to be one of the least distracting elements of Tarsem Singh's slick, silly sci-fi Self/less, which gets a running start with smart ideas it can't follow through on.
Kingsley is Damian Hayes, a haughty and emotionally detached real estate tycoon with terminal cancer. Desperate to survive at any cost, he crosses paths with a shadowy scientist (Matthew Goode on enjoyably snakelike form) who offers him a radical new procedure known as shedding, whereby his consciousness is transferred into a healthy, lab-grown new body. What do I have to lose, he asks himself, because presumably he's never heard of Faust.

At worst, the often frustrating filmmaker has always had a keen eye, whether it was used helming a landmark music video such as Rem's "Loosing My Religion" or creating visual feats such as "The Fall" or "Immortals." Why Singh took such a conservative approach to this particular film, a project that could have used his stylistic flourishes, is head scratching. The concept is pretty simple. A dying billionaire, Damian Hale (Ben Kinsgley), is given the opportunity to "shed" his current body and inhabit a younger, healthier shell. In theory, it's painless; it just uses a machine to transfer the memories from one person into the brain of another. Actually that means it's just a new body that thinks it's the previous person, but...

The Change-Up: Singh Sleepwalks Through Sci-Fi Stock
Time is not on anyone’s side in director Tarsem Singh’s latest blunder through familiar material, Self/less, a mash-up of recycled sci-fi tropes drained of innovation or potential potency. Issues of class, identity, and health insurance get chugged through the blender of David and Alex Pastor’s script, the directing/screenwriting duo’s foray into the English language. Singh, known for expressively beautiful visuals, presents his most demurely dressed feature to date, though his usual ocular trickery may have offered a slight reprieve from the crushing banality of the laughably conservative moral fable proffered here.
Damian (Ben Kingsley) heads his own self-built empire, but finds he’s been diagnosed with cancer and doesn’t have much longer to live. He has a troubled relationship with his daughter, Claire (Michelle Dockery), but finds he’s not quite ready to call it quits.

If the twin successes of Mad Max: Fury Road and Ex Machina have something to say about genre fiction in 2015, it’s that a simple premise envisioned with thoughtful craft can pump as much blood to the cognitive parts of your brain as it does the pleasure centers. Meeting nicely in the middle between head-trip and Neanderthal action vehicle is Self/less, the latest film from acclaimed visualist and debatable storyteller Tarsem Singh (Aka Tarsem). Though his last two efforts – the Snow White and 300 also-rans, respectively, Mirror Mirror and Immortals - failed to produce Hollywood fare as bankable as his career-defining The Fall was beautiful, Self/less is unmistakably, uniquely Tarsem, despite the derivative appearance.
An apposite clash between creative forces seen and unseen makes for one of the many engaging threads to pull at while watching Self/less, a twisty thriller all about exteriors and interiors wrestling for control.

In 1966, John Frankenheimer directed one of his most audacious movies, Seconds, with a script by Lewis John Carlino from a novel by David Ely. It told the story of an older banker who solicits the help of a shadowy organization that will fake his death and reconstruct him with a brand new identity, as well as a new face and body. The movie was a box-office flop, but has developed a cult following over the years and clearly had an influence on the makers of Self/less, director Tarsem Singh and screenwriters Alex Pastor and David Pastor. Focus Features’ original plan was to release Self/Less in September of last year but, at some point, the decision was made to punt it back to Summer 2015. We’ll now be seeing it on July 31st.
The film has been directed by Tarsem Singh, the stylist behind Rem’s Losing My Religion, cult-movie The Fall and J-Lo embarrassment The Cell. He’s only ever as good as his scripts, and sometimes not quite, but Self/Less at least has the benefit of a screenplay by David and Alex Pastor.
The Pastors wrote Carriers and The Last Days, both of which were low-key but smarter than average genre films. I’m certainly alway interested when I see their name on a film.
And the stars of Self/Less are Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley, the latter playing a billionaire who wants his consciousness transferred into the body of the former.

Q: When is a J-horror not a J-horror?
A: When it’s written and directed by a spanish team including David and Alex Pastor of Carriers and The Last Days fame and Javier Gullon, the writer of Enemy.
I don’t have a problem with mainstream horror movies as such. Of course, as with most of the people who frequent this site, I find that my tastes are satisfied by the films that exist a little more towards the fringe, but on the whole I find that even the most formulaic of horrors can provide some thrills and chills.
I say this because Out of the Dark is one of the most derivative and predictable horror films I’ve seen in a long time. Surprisingly (and perhaps the only surprising thing about this film othe [Continued ...]...

Spanish director Àlex Pastor - the man behind the amazing and very awarded short movie Larutanatural - and his brother, David Pastor, pervert the rules of zombie movies in their feature-film, Carriers. The movie, which will be released on September 4 in Us (September 11 in Spain) begins with pandemic outbreak of a rare strain of flu to go into the reaction of men in extreme situations. We recently had the chance to talk with them.
Four kids are driving through the desert on the way to the beach, their faces anything but cheery: this isn’t Spring Break. They’re trying to outrun the end of the world – and each other. Determined to elude the deadly virus, Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci), his brother Brian (Chris Pine), his girlfriend Bobby (Piper Perabo) and Danny’s school friend Kate (Emily Vancamp) speed across the Southwestern U.S. to reach a place of possible safety.

It's so good to finally see momentum coming from this project. Directed years ago by Àlex Pastor and David Pastor, Paramount Vantage has been sitting on the film but have finally slated release for this September. Why they shelved it for so long we don't know. Maybe it's just not that great, but then why not just give it a straight-to-dvd release like so many other films? I can only assume they were waiting for the right time to strike, and with Chris Pine skyrocketing to success from his turn as captain Kirk in Abrams' Star Trek the timing seems perfect.
