Quentin Tarantino has worked with a variety of actors in his career. This list of performers he’s collaborated with has also included child stars. But when it came to working with children, there were certain scenes in his own films he felt were perhaps too extreme.

Tarantino has always embraced violence in his movies. The director is not shy about being a violent filmmaker at his core. His films often involve characters in deadly shootouts or other dangerous situations that sometimes end in a lot of blood and dismembered body parts.

"Is there anything you've done that would make someone come after you?" IFC Midnight has debuted the official trailer for a Hitchcockian thriller titled Midnighters, the feature directorial debut of editor Julius Ramsay (of work on shows like "The Walking Dead", "Battlestar Galactica", "Flashforward"). Midnighters is about a couple in a strained marriage who face the ultimate test after they cover up a terrible crime and find themselves entangled in a Hitchcockian web of deceit and madness on New Year's Eve. The film stars Alex Essoe and Dylan McTee, along with Perla Haney-Jardine, Ward Horton, Andrew Rothenberg, and Joseph Anderson. This looks a bit odd, but it might be creepy & thrilling. The film "offers a layered, enigmatic thriller set in the Gothic backwoods of New England – the perfect place to get away with murder." Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Julius Ramsay's Midnighters, direct from IFC's YouTube: A...

Back in June, the 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival took over Southern California, hosting screenings at numerous locations and featuring numerous genre films that horror and sci-fi fans should definitely keep on their radars in the coming months. Here are my thoughts on three of the movies that I had the opportunity to watch at the festival:
Replace: As far genre feature film debuts go, co-writer/director Norbert Keil has a lot to be proud of with Replace, a stunning and beautifully executed cinematic mystery that’s part body horror/part psychological thriller. Something of a hallucinatory fever dream at times, Keil has crafted an intriguing and chilling portrait of just how far some folks are willing to go in the name of vanity, and the whole affair is anchored by a trio of powerhouse performances by Rebecca Forsythe, Barbara Crampton, and Lucie Aron.

Premiering on Monday, June 19th as part of the 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival lineup is director Julius Ramsay’s intense and masterfully constructed thriller, Midnighters, which was penned by Julius’ brother, Alston Ramsay. We think we know Steve Jobs, the maestro behind Apple but unless you read one of his biographies or watch Jobs or Steve Jobs, you only have impressions. General audiences will recognize the man in the black turtleneck and know he gave us the iPod, iPhone, Macintosh, etc. but most will mistakenly credit him for being the builder of these gadgets.
Read Walter Isaacson’s wonderful biography or study Jobs through the myriad video interviews or articles available online and you come to understand he was a visionary who pushed, prodded, cajoled, wheedled, and demanded his workers to meet his exacting standards.
Capturing that volatile and complex man on film would be a challenge for any production crew but director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin were the kind you wanted for something challenging. Sorkin took Isaacson’s bio as a starting point but then read and read more material.

Last year I began a tradition to help my fellow Bfca members choose more wisely when it comes to the "Young Performer" category by sharing an eligibility list. My belief is they often choose poorly because this category gets no pre-voting discussion whatsoever and it can be difficult to even think of who is eligible. That said, you can safely expect to see Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation) and Jacob Tremblay (Room) nominated because they have leading roles in films that have been discussed. But who else should or could be nominated?
Ballots go out to the Bfca at any moment so here's a cheat sheet to help them vote. The category is Under 21... (but it should obviously be adjusted to 17 and under. Remember that year when the winner came from the sexually explicit Blue is the Warmest Color? That's what you get when you have a category with...

One of the more mystifying box-office failures of the year has been Danny Boyle‘s Steve Jobs, which dropped over 2,000 of its theaters this weekend and looks to be petering out at under $17 million total. Our review was fairly positive — and we even followed it up with a heated discussion — but a major point of contention has been its final few scenes. Spoilers do follow, of course.

While speaking on Jeff Goldsmith‘s (excellent) podcast The Q&A, the screenwriter defended this finale.

With Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, there will now be three films on the late founder of Apple Computers, the man who put portable computers in eveyone’s hand, as this film notes at one point. A few years back, there was the biopic Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher, who has a striking resemblance to Jobs and this year, an excellent documentary by the Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney, called “Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine.” Steve Jobs is a man whose fans admire him with almost cult-like adoration (and just to be clear, this writer is not among them), yet none of these films have presented him in a very flattering light- least of all Boyle’s film.

Steve Jobs: Genius. Visionary. Asshole. Steve Jobs is not a traditional biography of the Apple founder and, after it went off the rails in the late 1980s and early 90s, its returning hero and savior. We don’t peek in on his childhood, or on the battle with pancreatic cancer that he eventually lost. This is much narrower, the tale of how one man revolutionized the computer industry and as a result, you know, changed the world. Jobs wasn’t an engineer or a...

Early in Steve Jobs, the Aaron Sorkin-scripted, Danny Boyle-directed biopic about the mercurial Apple co-founder, the hero does something so right yet so peculiar that you understand why a cult sprung up around him. It's 1984, a few weeks after the legendary SuperBowl commercial heralding the arrival of the Apple Macintosh. The official public unveiling is minutes away. If I hadn’t seen Alex Gibney’s documentary Steve Jobs: The Man Inside The Machine earlier this year, I’d probably be a little more enchanted by Danny Boyle’s Hollywoodized dramatization, Steve Jobs. Written by the quick-witted Aaron Sorkin, this take on Apple’s infamous mogul is a surprisingly brief glimpse into three major turning points in Jobs’ career, focusing on the strained relationship between a man and the child he refused to acknowledge as his own daughter. Where Gibney made us question Jobs’ ethics, and where filmmaker Joshua Michael Stern sought out to chronicle Steve’s rise to power in Jobs, Sorkin fixates on the titular character’s capacity for human emotion, boiling a jagged persona down to what should be a meaningful parental bond. This is the human side of Jobs we finally get to explore – albeit a more glitzy, crowd-pleasing take.

'Steve Jobs' movie poster. 'Steve Jobs' movie: 'Riveting, high speed' biopic starring Michael Fassbender at his best On the outside, computers are clean, symmetrical slabs of molded polycarbonate; pleasant, or at least inoffensive, to look at. On the inside, however, the part most consumers don't see, is a bento box of circuit boards, memory chips, wires, graphics cards, and cooling systems, busily processing and moving the innumerable pieces of information that make the unit work flawlessly or, occasionally, crash. What director Danny Boyle's ferocious three-act rocket ride, Steve Jobs, teaches us about its eponymous tech icon, is that he was much like a computer: on the outside, clad in his signature black turtleneck and jeans, he was trim, bespectacled and flawlessly functioning. David Fincher seemed an odd, but intriguing, choice to helm an Aaron Sorkin script in 2010. In 2015, Danny Boyle seemed like the studio just grabbed the first high-profile guy they found on the street. The behind-the-scenes turmoil that lead to Steve Jobs finally making it to theaters is well chronicled, but suffice to say, the project, which began at the executive level, went through innumerable variations of director, cast, and eventually studio. What amazes is how ideal the end result feels. Steve Jobs has tremendous clarity of purpose, an out-and-out entertainment machine with a sextet of searing performances that is intelligent about how emotional it is, and firmly cemented in its sense of theatricality. This is drama, first and foremost. It’s also, quite remarkably and fully, a Danny Boyle Picture.

The issues with bringing Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs biopic to the big screen have been well-publicized, with a number of actors dropping out at the last minute and those pesky “Sony Hack” emails making the behind the scenes problems clear. However, despite all of that, the movie has come together pretty damn well if early reviews are anything to go by.
The synopsis reveals that events in Steve Jobs will be “set backstage at three iconic product launches” with the end point set to be “in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac.” It adds that “the film takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter.”
The clips above (which run for nearly five minutes), cover those key moments and several others, providing a great look at the movie’s well-publicized Aaron Sorkin dialogue and some very impressive performances.

All About Steve: Boyle and Sorkin’s Backstage Swipe at the Tech Magnate
Though it successfully usurps the ungainly 2013 film starring a miscast Ashton Kutcher as the eponymous technological entrepreneur, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s up-do hardly grazes the superficial surface of the man known as Steve Jobs, especially considering his name serves as the title. An astutely written and hyper-intelligent (not to mention overly loquacious) chamber piece, the type we’ve come to expect from the likes of Sorkin following his tackling of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg in Fincher’s 2010 The Social Network, this treatment spans a fourteen year period and covers the backstage scenes behind three notable product launches in Jobs’ career (1984-1998). The result is an exaggerated triptych of moments formulated as a bluntly theatrical stage play. Agonized modern figures now historically mythologized for the roles they’ve played in the technological advances...

Taken as a straight-faced, just-the-facts account of one great man’s amazing achievements, Steve Jobs is a bit daft. For as much as the structure of Danny Boyle and Aaron Sorkin‘s biopic — divided into three sections, each set backstage right before a product’s announcement (those being the Apple Lisa in 1984, the NeXTcube in 1988, and the iMac in 1998) — is receiving attention, that bit of pre-release hype, like all pre-release hype, should be questioned. To my mind, this is all a reductive bit of enthusiasm: what happens when anyone does anything different with the format, thus saving us from having to (gasp!) sit through “yet another biopic.” The reaction is premature, surely, but none too surprising. There’s a vocal and too-large section of viewers for whom the genre indicates that what they’re seeing — no matter the talent of its creators or the fascination that comes with its subject — is unquestionably an inferior product,...

Steve Jobs
Written by Aaron Sorkin
Directed by Danny Boyle
USA, 2105
Director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) divides this character study of contentious public figure Steve Jobs (Michael Fassbender) between three product launches, focusing on key pressure-cooker moments of his career that portray him at his most capable and least compassionate. The camera stares cynically as he betrays and keeps any potential closeness at a distance in order to uphold his greatness in the public eye. A parade of forsaken relationships creates a chasm between him and the rest of the world that the well-meaning people in his life continuously try to remedy. Although the indictment of his failings significantly softens by the third act, this is by no means a sympathetic account of the rise of the late guru behind Apple’s high-tech domination. Instead, it drives home the cruel single-mindedness that made Jobs an exceptional taskmaster. The film...

A couple of months on from the first Steve Jobs trailer, Universal have just uploaded a second for Mac users worldwide. And we guess you can watch it on a PC too. Danny Boyle is the director, Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay, and Michael Fassbender is Jobs, juggling his life as a tech visionary with that of a family man: not always successfully it seems. There's slightly less of the supporting cast in trailer 2, and a more specific focus on Jobs himself. But there are still glimpses of Seth Rogen’s Steve Wozniak, Kate Winslet's marketing chief Joanna Hoffman, and Katherine Waterston's Chrisann Brennan, who confronts Jobs over his negligent parenting of daughter Lisa (Perla Haney-Jardine). Jeff Daniels is Apple executive John Sculley, who frequently clashed with Jobs. Based on Walter Isaacson’s biography, the film focuses on three big moments in Jobs' corporate life: the launch of...

Telluride – Steve Jobs became one of the most iconic men of the millennium. He was a phoenix like figure that brought the company he founded back from the brink and transformed it into the most valuable corporation in the world. Jobs was also a difficult man to work with who many people admired and just as many considered an a-hole. Almost four years after his passing, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin have collaborated on “Steve Jobs,” an ambitious new drama that culls material from Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the legendary Apple CEO. The movie takes place during three different product launches that also happened to be signature moments in Jobs’ life. The first act occurs before the launch of the Macintosh computer in 1984. The second act takes place in 1988 before Jobs’ introduces his Next computer, years after his dismissal from Apple. The final act occurs in...

Fresh off Michael Mann’s cybernetic hacking thriller Blackhat, John Oritz has boarded Danny Boyle’s upcoming Steve Jobs in a supporting role.
According to Deadline, Oritz — whose previous credits include appearances in Silver Linings Playbook and Fast and Furious 6 — will play the part of Joel Pforzheimer, a journalist tasked with interviewing the titular visionary for GQ magazine. No other details of his role nor how prominent it will prove to be were shared at this time.
Oritz now joins a growing ensemble cast for Boyle’s production, one that includes Seth Rogen as Jobs’ partner-in-technological-crime Steve Wozniak, not to mention Perla Haney-Jardine, Ripley Sobo, and Makenzie Moss as Lisa Brennan, the Apple co-founder’s daughter. From what we understand, Brennan’s character will have significant part to play in the final product, with the script orbiting around three of the company’s most high-profile product launches within its illustrious history,...

It hasn’t been the easiest of journeys for Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs film — what with David Fincher, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and even Sony itself bailing on the project during its nascent stages — but now that the project has found a new home at Universal Studios, the wheels have ached into motion.
With filming now underway in San Francisco, fans have flocked to catch a glimpse of Michael Fassbender as the late, great Apple co-founder, resulting in some pretty low-res images making their way online. However, perhaps in a bid to showcase the once-troubled film in its best light, Universal has unveiled an image from the Californian set.

Principal shooting has already begun on Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs movie, with production setting up shop in San Francisco earlier this month, and today, Universal confirmed the full list of casting choices set to portray the film’s leading roles.
As previously reported, the title role will be occupied by X-Men: Days of Future Past star Michael Fassbender — following Christian Bale’s abrupt departure — opposite Seth Rogen, who is on board to play the integral role of co-founder Steve Wozniak. This core cast will be rounded out by Jeff Daniels’ John Sculley, Avie Tevanian, Sarah Snook and Kate Winslet as a former marketing head.
But as previous reports had indicated, Boyle’s Steve Jobs film will place a heavy emphasis on the impact of the visionary’s first daughter, Lisa Brennan, who will be portrayed by Perla Haney-Jardine, Ripley Sobo, and Makenzie Moss at “various stages” of her life.
