"Donnie Darko," the 2001 Richard Kelly-directed mind-bender of a movie about time travel, death, and the dreadfully existential experience that is high school is memorable for many reasons. Today, if you so much as mention the cult film, images of Frank the rabbit and his shot-out eye immediately come to mind. Frank is the stuff of nightmares, enhancing the movie's atmosphere with his mysterious and ominous presence in the title character's life. However, Frank's creepiness is only one part — albeit a big one — of the film's peculiarities, none of which would be anywhere near as effective if it weren't for one major thing: the music.
The score for "Donnie Darko" is perhaps just as memorable as Frank, that pesky jet engine, the incredible finale, and that one uncomfortable scene in Donnie's (Jake Gyllenhaal) therapist's office. It is the thing that sets the tone for the entire movie, kicking things off...

The soundtrack to "Donnie Darko" is among my all-time favorite movie soundtracks, and I'm surely not alone in this. Not only is the score by Michael Andrews hauntingly beautiful, but the licensed songs played throughout are New Wave gems. Seriously, what other movie soundtrack has The Church, Oingo Boingo, and Joy Division on it?
However, the most memorable inclusion on the "Donnie Darko" soundtrack had to be not one, but two songs from English pop duo Tears for Fears -- one was the famous Andrews and Gary Jules cover of "Mad World," while the other was the studio version of "Head Over Heels." It's hard to separate either song from the film anymore, and the way they are both integrated into the film shows how carefully constructed each element of Richard Kelly's movie is.
That being said, both the "Mad World" cover and "Head Over Heels" could have easily...

The race to be top of the British singles chart at Christmas has been an annual event every December since 1952.
On Friday 23, LadBaby broke a record they were previously tied for with The Beatles, achieving their fifth consecutive Christmas No 1.
The Beatles had been top of the tree since 1967 with a record four Christmas number ones, although that was equalled last year when LadBaby claimed their fourth win in four years with an offering called “Sausage Rolls for Everyone”.
LadBaby have now vaulted to the top with their fifth No 1, “Food Aid”.
The Spice Girls also notched an impressive three consecutive victories in the mid-Nineties, while Sir Cliff Richard also has a hat-trick to his name.
LadBaby, Aka Mark and Roxanne Hoyle, are actually having another crack at it in 2022, with the help of ever popular money-saving guru Martin Lewis, who, rather suprisingly, is joining them for a chairty cover...

The higher the intensity of a trailer, the slower the song that accompanies it. This may seem fairly recent as a reliable rule, but it’s not a completely new phenomenon. What goes back at least to the 2001 trailer for the first iteration of Xbox 360’s apocalyptic warfare video game Gears of War — with Gary Jules delivering a heart-ripping cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” — is an visual-aural contrast that’s now common practice.
More recent examples of the trend include FJØRA’s echoey take on the 4 Non Blondes perennial “What’s Up?” in the terrifying trailer for 2020’s “Welcome to the Blumhouse”; Lana Del Rey’s creepy version of “Once Upon a Dream,” from the classic Disney animated film “Sleeping Beauty,” in the trailer for 2014’s “Maleficent”; and ConfidentialMX featuring Becky Hanson’s operatic interpretation of the Bee Gees’ “I Started a Joke” in the dark trailer for 2016’s “Suicide Squad.

Michelle Zauner, a.k.a. Japanese Breakfast, is now one of the hundreds of artists who have covered Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels.” Released off W Records, an imprint of W Hotels, the cover is the second of Zauner’s two singles off the label — her original song “Essentially” was released last month. Portions of the proceeds from both singles will benefit the Aclu.
Glossed in delicate synth-y vocals, the cover gives the 1985 New Wave hit a dream-pop makeover. “Something happens and I’m head over heels,” she sings gently.

On their 2015 breakthrough, Blurryface, Twenty One Pilots were the ultimate post-Spotify rock band, flickering wildly through ideas and genre: Tyler Joseph’s vein-spilling emo rap, Josh Dun’s funky-hard Travis Barker drums, tweaks of electronic music and reggae, twee ukulele indie, the grandeur of a Broadway musical and existential lyrics with a metatextual flair. Think a modern Sublime doing Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life.

Lily Allen offered a soulful spin on Tears for Fears’ 1983 single “Mad World” in a new cover version recorded for Spotify’s Singles series.
The British pop singer stripped back the song to vocals and a mournful piano part, recalling the bare-bones aesthetic of the rendition that Gary Jules and Michael Andrews recorded for the 2001 fantasy film Donnie Darko. Allen paired the tune with a similarly raw take on “Family Man,” which appears on her recently issued fourth LP, No Shame.

Up until this point, I was hoping that everything that I have seen for the upcoming DC Universe series Titans was all a joke. Unfortunately for all of us, it is real and it looks stupid. Here are the 5 reasons why the new Titans trailer sucks.
1) Brenton Thwaites, the actor who plays Robin, just doesn’t do it for me. The guy is a decent actor. To me, he looks like one of those idiots from The Dark Knight running around trying to be Batman when clearly they are not. He is running around trying to be Robin when clearly he is just constipated. I am not a fan.
2) Starfire’s costume design is ridiculous. On a positive note, I love the costume design of Raven and Beastboy. Don’t get me wrong, I like the choice of Anna Diop for the role. I just think they made her look like a 1970’s groupie.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “New Girl” Season 7, Episode 4 “Where the Road Goes.”]
“New Girl” has spent its final season covering a lot of ground. The three-year time jump in the premiere pushed several stories forward, which includes the ongoing relationship between Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel), a child for Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone), and one on the way for Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Aly (Nasim Pedrad). Because of this fast-forwarding, the show has also been filling in the blanks of what happened during those three years.
On Tuesday’s episode, “Where the Road Goes,” the gang braves the rain and travels in a motorcade to a cemetery for a service for Winston’s beloved cat Furguson. It’s not a funeral but a memorial, performed according to Jewish tradition, to honor his passing a year before. Because apparently, Furguson was one of the Chosen People.

Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. The wit hasn’t faded and the menace hasn’t cooled, and the cast seems hipper than ever: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross. Two versions, two formats, no waiting.

I know there are bigger Star Wars fans out there than me, so maybe they could answer this question. When Luke Skywalker meets Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine in the original Star Wars, why doesn't Obi-Wan remember his previous exploits with R2-D2? The real answer may be that George Lucas might not have thought far enough ahead at that point to know he wanted to actually make the prequels one day and that those two would have crossed paths at that time in the story, but does the franchise itself offer a reason? Is it just Obi-Wan's memory going bad?
In any case, YouTuber Jeffim Sheroky has put together an amusing little video that shows R2 having sad flashbacks to all of their adventures together set to Gary Jules' haunting cover of "Mad World."

‘Donnie Darko’ to Receive 4K Blu-ray Restoration, Potentially Revealing the Mysteries of Time Travel
“Donnie Darko” fans from across the pond are in for a treat: Richard Kelly’s cult classic is getting a 4K restoration in time for Christmas. The upcoming Blu-ray release was just announced on Twitter by Kelly, who clarified that both the theatrical and director’s cut will be included along with a bevy of special features. Arrow Films is handling the release, which unfortunately is region-locked — making this another reason to consider an all region-player.

Diverse, awe-inspiring and memorable treasures that have sadly fallen off the radar
The noughties were a tough decade for film music fans. Not only was there the unprecedented loss of four great masters in the form of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Michael Kamen and Basil Poledouris; the nature of the industry itself began to go through some seismic changes, not all of them for the better.
With the art of film scoring becoming ever more processed, driven increasingly by ghost writers, electronic augmentation and temp tracks, prospects looked bleak. However, this shouldn’t shield the fact that there were some blindingly brilliant scores composed during this period. Here’s but a small sampling of them.

As ever, our friends at ITV have published the list of songs to be performed, as well as the artist who performed the version being covered.
Halloween classics 'Bat Out of Hell' and 'Thriller' are of course present and correct. 'Highway To Hell' is also suitably screamy.
'Relight My Fire' is the Take That/Lulu version rather than the Dan Hartman disco classic. We think it's allowed because Hell is fiery and that.
'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)' gets in because of its spooky video, rather than the song itself.
Similarly, we're guessing 'Mad World' gets a pass because of Gary Jules's dark reworking for Richard Kelly's 2001 classic Donnie Darko, but Jay James will apparently be doing the bouncy Tears For Fears original.

Wish I Was Here, Boyhood and Guardians Of The Galaxy take a mixtape approach to their soundtracks. Ivan looks at what makes them so great...
"You gotta hear this one song. It'll change your life, I swear," a girl (Sam) in a doctor's waiting room once said to a boy (Andrew) who looked a lot like Zach Braff. Then, she placed a pair of headphones over his ears and played him The Shins.
Garden State's soundtrack became a must-have for all fans in 2004 thanks to its effective use - and curation - of indie artists, acoustic ditties and mild electronica. It was an album that showed a jukebox soundtrack (traditionally the territory of Tarantino) could do something different, whether that was introducing people to obscure bands they hadn't heard of or connecting you with others who also liked the movie's music.
10 years later, filmmakers are still chasing the same thing: the ultimate mixtape.

Nothing captures the unique experience of dads taking their kids to concerts quite like these hilarious pictures - especially when they're part of a slideshow set to "Mad World" by Gary Jules. The featured photos were taken at a One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer concert this past August, and the despondent expressions on the dads' faces are just too funny. Watch the clever video above, a tribute to "the few . . . the brave . . . the loving, caring fathers," then be sure to check out more must-see viral videos!

The Shins have a great tune "So Says I," but now it's time for a hazy "So Now What." The indie rockers -- who have been curbed more recently as James Mercer has pursued other musics with Danger Mouse in their project Broken Bells -- contributed the new tune to Zach Braff's "Wish I Were Here" film, which went the crowd-funding route last year. As you'll remember, Natalie Portman famously put headphones on Braff's head to the tune of The Shins "New Slang" in the former "Scrubs" star's directorial debut "Garden State" (2004). "It'll change your life, I swear," her character Sam says. Well, it certainly did change the band life of The Shins. So the circle of life continues. "Wish I Was Here" also has new songs from the likes of Bon Iver, Coldplay and Cat Power, plus previously released songs from The Head and the Heart and Hozier.

After assembling an eclectic set of artists for the soundtrack to last year's The Hunger Games, Republic and Mercury have attracted an even more impressive array of acts to get you in the mood for sequel Catching Fire. Just as Jennifer Lawrence's star-wattage has increased since her debut outing as Katniss Everdeen, this tie-in album - comprised of songs inspired by Suzanne Collins's dystopian tale - packs more A-list punch with the likes of Coldplay and Christina Aguilera bringing new songs to the table.
Like most film soundtracks, Catching Fire is a mixed bag designed to cater to a wide range of tastes. Welcome to an album where Christian Aguilera follows indie rockers The National and rock 'n' roll icon Patti Smith is sandwiched between Ellie Goulding and Santigold!
Coldplay kick off proceedings with 'Atlas', a soaring anthem that the band are able to produce in their sleep.

Remember when Gary Jules managed to make Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” even more melancholy in “Donnie Darko?” Now New Zealand wunderkind Lorde has found the dark heart of the group’s bouncy “Everybody Wants to Save the World” for the “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” soundtrack. This is one of those great matches of artist, song and movie. The 17-year-old’s cutting delivery makes her sound like she could be one of the Hunger Games’ more formidable teenage killers. They're funny, they're sad, they're weird. Here are 50 famous last words from characters in the movies...
Please Note: There are potential spoilers ahead. Check the name of the film, and if you haven't seen it, don't read the entry!
As someone famous probably once said, “We’ve all gotta go sometime,” and if we’re going to die, we might as well do so with a witticism or a memorable line rather than a scream and a cry for mother. Which is the subject of this lengthy but far from definitive list: the memorable things movie characters have uttered shortly (not necessarily immediately) before they’re about to meet their maker.
Some of these last words are long, tear-jerking monologues. Others amount to little more than a word or two. But all of them, in our estimation, are worthy of mention, and one...

Meet Ijameswalters. A week ago he achieved internet virality through his rendition of the song "I Dreamed A Dream" when he voiced the entire song as the Lord of The Rings character Gollum/Smeagol. This week he released another video of him using the same voice to work through his own take of Gary Jules' rendition of "Mad World". For those of you who are only familiar with the Tears For Fears version you need to get it together and watch Donnie Darko, as this version is only second to the Jules cover. Bonus points for the overdressed guy on piano.

Dear Joseph Kosinski,
The word is out on you enlisting the help of M83 for your upcoming feature Oblivion, and I could not be happier. As far as directors matching sound to film, you've proven in Tron and a couple old Xbox 360 commercials you are the creme de la creme of good taste. Seriously, I still remember that Gears of War commercial you did with Gary Jules back in the day. Great stuff.
It was you that brought to my attention that Daft Punk had a fan base outside of geeks and the French, and practically made that movie for me. Enough hero worship. Let's cut to the chase. I want you to soundtrack my life. I'm talking from the time my eyes open to when my head hits the pillow I want tunes you selected following me throughout my day. I can't promise my lifestyle can keep up with...

Trespassing – The title track was co-written with Grammy Award winning Pharrell Williams,[98] while the album’s lead single, “Better Than I Know Myself”, a collaboration with Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly, was released on December 20, 2011 to all digital retailers. His debut live performance of the single on January 17, 2012 on the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno received overwhelmingly positive reviews, focusing on Lambert’s soaring and impeccable vocals on this melodically challenging song, as well as his more stripped down and sophisticated look.

The Christmas number one: a supposedly hallowed achievement, and yet both Mr Blobby and Bob The Builder have both walked away with it in the past. In recent years, the market immediately before Christmas has been over-populated by the deluge of “talented” winners from Simon Cowell’s pop processing plant on the moon (probably) and vocal dissenters seem to have turned the Christmas Number One into some sort of insipid personification of everything that is wrong with the music business.
But, there have been some shining lights in the history of the Christmas Number One, despite the infamous ear-bleeders and the outrageous stories of classic songs being overtaken for the accolade by awful one-hit-wonders. And this article is hereby devoted to listing said highlights.
Somewhat unthinkably, there is no place for “Fairytale of New York”, for which we can thank the Pet Shop Boys, whose cover of “Always On My Mind” took the 1987 spot,...

When they're not developing popular shooters, Epic Games sure know how to put an emotional trailer together. With every "Gears of War" release, the company issues forth a trailer that incorporates a seemingly out-of-place, sad song played over crazy action. The first "Gears" trailer used the haunting "Mad World," as sung by Gary Jules. "Gears of War 2" video featured Devotchka's "How It Ends." Today, Epic has released the latest trailer for "Gears of War 3" and – big surprise – it features a real tear-jerker from Mazzy Star, "To Dust."
You can check out the video posted by Machinima this morning below.
So, now that you've taken some time to wipe away your tears, lighting a candle under your "Marcus + Dom 4-ever" shrine, let's take a deeper look at these "Gears" trailers. No, not just at the gameplay they're showing off – which looks excellent, of course – but at this sort of auteur method...

"Due to the selfishness of the makers of Anchorman...this cameo is number 5."
All celebrities have to pay their dues...and while I'm sure the thought has crossed your mind, "If I was an actor, I would only take big movies and ones sure to be a success..." your diet would probably consist of half eaten corn dogs found in the lavish trash cans of Hollywood. Saying that, I wouldn't say that these acting roles for Mr. Rogen before he became a household name were bad moves, but certainly comical to say the least, and not always for the reasons he's known for.
So as you can read from the caption above, we've already covered the magical non video cameo that is "Eager Cameraman in Anchorman" so lets move on to.

Damn writer Gareth Bunkham and his perfect article on 52 Reasons Why Back To The Future Might Just Be The Greatest Film Of All Time. Since that cracking article was reissued last week by WhatCulture!; I have been honoured with the task of proving why, one of my favourite films of all time, a one Donnie Darko, should join this prestigious list, that along with the 80’s sci-fi blockbuster, so far includes;
Ghostbusters,
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho,
Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver.
and Jaws!
As Donnie Darko turns 10 years old this year, below are 50 reasons and to all you Darko fans, enjoy:
1. Richard Kelly
Writer, director, visionary, Richard Kelly made Donnie Darko what it is today – a magical film that inspires and entertains on every viewing. For a first time filmmaker, the direction and innovation of Donnie Darko is stunning and for a debut feature, highly admirable. I could go on...

The Gears of War series have become just as known for their stylish, morose musical trailers as they have for their brutal gameplay, with the moody vignettes serving as stark counterpoints to the white-hot action. Well, Epic has decided to take a little diversion from their normal path, at least sonically, with the new story trailer for the upcoming three-quel. Warm up your horn-throwing hands and check it out, courtesy of G4, after the jump. After such moody dirges as Gary Jules' cover of "Mad World" and Sun Kil Moon's "Heron Blue," it's a pleasant change of pace to have your face thoroughly rocked off by the appropriate "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath. I'm surprised it...

Which makes sense because it is a video game with zombies... and as we all know, film geeks love zombies! But even if you're getting sick of chopping up undead hordes in games like Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead, the Dead Island trailer might catch your attention because it does something a little different. It attempts to be artistic and plays out like a short film. But is it as mindblowing as everyone says it is? Ever since a Gears of War trailer [2] used the Gary Jules cover of "Mad World" (from the Donnie Darko soundtrack) a couple of years ago, video game developers have...

Ho Ho Ho! Welcome to the Holiday Edition of Afterelton's Music Roundup. This holiday season we've been blessed with fresh albums by artists who had yet to venture into the holiday album arena including Annie Lennox, Indigo Girls, and the B-52's Fred Schneider. Like a gift at a Pink Elephant party, we've also been given second attempt albums by those artists who should probably just stick to their original (I'm talking to you Mariah!).
With everyone from Train to The Killers to Coldplay churning out holiday hits at the last minute, there's much to discuss. On the flip side, we'll pick back up with new non-holiday material (Cee Lo Green, Adam Lambert, Joe McElderry and Real Housewives of Atlanta's Kandi Burrus) all worth a listen, so let's get started.

Phillip Schofield has admitted that he greatly enjoyed Aiden Grimshaw’s performance on Saturday’s X Factor show.

You are so current in this whole Robert Pattinson/Twilight era. You played it perfectly, you made it original and it was my favourite performance of the whole night.
Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, Phillip Schofield admitted that he agreed with Simon and said:

The gorgeous Aiden Grimshaw was the last of the boy’s category to take to the X Factor stage tonight. The singer admitted that he can be introverted and awkward but vowed to externalise his performance this evening.
Aiden then kicked into a rendition of Gary Jules’ Mad World. It’s a hard song to inject personality into but we thought that Grimshaw made it very chilling, very deep and his vocals were haunting. An amazing vocal performance and we don;t think the song could have worked any better for him.
Judges Comments:
Cheryl: I am taken aback by that and that was the surprise of the evening for me. That was brilliant, popstar level already.
Louis: I thought we had found ourselves a popstar, now I know we have. One of the best performances of the night. You are the next big male popstar.

I have to come right out and be honest, and tell you that, as huge a fan of Psych as I am, one or two episodes this season have let me down a bit. I’m not absolutely sure why that is, but I think that we have come to a point in the show where overplaying the general doubt in Spencer’s abilities is actually annoying.
Much like the oft-compared (even rather brilliantly within the show) The Mentalist, or something like House, after the first dozen or so times our heroes turn out to be right, it would be nice if the rest of the cast opened to the idea that they might be right.
Despite my misgivings about a couple of episodes, you don’t want to miss the next one. With not only Lost‘s Nestor Carbonell, but also Tears for Fears‘ Curt Smith appearing both in...

Eminem's new single "Not Afraid" is a fantastic return to form for Slim Shady, as it does little more than lay a beat down and let him spit crazy, passionate verses over it. The video, which premiered over the weekend, also taps into a visual place that Eminem has not tapped into in several years. The aggressive, serious nature of the song made him leave behind the wacky trappings of his funny videos and focus on intensity and visual poetry (the sort of thing he used to do with clips like "Stan" and "Lose Yourself"). "Not Afraid" casts Eminem first as a man wandering the streets and then as a Neo-like superhero looking for redemption.
But the whole thing starts on a rooftop in Newark, New Jersey, which brings to mind a number of other famous clips that heavily feature bands playing on the tops of buildings. "Not Afraid" immediately jumps onto this list.

The third (and presumably last) trailer for Breck Eisner's The Crazies has hit, and this one is all about being short and sweet. We covered the first trailer back in October (which featured the Gary Jules cover of "Mad World"), and the second in December, which went a bit more in depth with the setup. The film tells the tale of a small town whose population has been turned into crazy killing machines by some sort of unknown toxin. It stars Timothy Olyphant as a small town sheriff who is trying to survive against the hordes of insane civilians and violent military retaliation, along with his pregnant wife (Radha Mitchell). This trailer gives us some quick glimpses at the film's titular insanity, but overall it isn't as effective as the past two because it's too short to accomplish much. It's strange for a trailer so near a film's release...
