If you were entertained by Russell Crowe in a cassock (and tootling around on a Lambretta) as Father Gabriele Amorth in last year's The Pope's Exorcist (and its $76.9 million box office off the back of an $18 million budget suggests plenty of you were), you'll no doubt be happy to hear that, according to producer Jeff Katz, Crowe will be battling demonic forces once more in a sequel.
Katz hit social media to announce that he'd gotten word of the sequel decision.
The Pope's Exorcist, which was directed by Julius Avery, finds Crowe as the real-life Italian priest who performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. His latest mission took him on a tricky quest to help a possessed American boy and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.
The end of the film teed up sequels, but there's no word yet on what case the new movie will feature.

It’s been one year since Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems brought The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), a supernatural thriller starring Russell Crowe, to theatres. Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but then things went quiet for a while. Crowe recently said that The Pope’s Exorcist was meant to kick off a trilogy, but the franchise’s progress had been slowed down by “a change of studio heads.” Things have apparently been worked out, though, because producer Jeff Katz of Worldwide Katz has just taken to social media to announce that the Pope’s Exorcist sequel has been given the greenlight!
Katz wrote, “Amorth Nation — I just got the call. It’S Officially Happening!!! “È un seguito, amici miei.”* Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta – and get ready to ride.

It may not seem like it but The Pope’s Exorcist was a hit at the box office last year, scaring up $76.9 million on a production budget of just $18 million. Academy Award winner Russell Crowe plays real-life exorcist Gabriele Amorth in the horror film, and it didn’t take long for Screen Gems to start thinking about a sequel. It seems it’s now actually happening.
The Pope’s Exorcist producer Jeff Katz took to Twitter last night to officially announce The Pope’s Exorcist 2, tweeting: “Amorth Nation — I just got the call. It’s officially happening!”
Katz added in last night’s tweet, “Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta – and get ready to ride.”
According to a recent interview with Russell Crowe, a trilogy had originally been planned at Screen Gems, which could end up happening if the sequel performs as well as the first film.

It looks like Russell Crowe cannot leave behind the horror and mystery genres so soon. According to an official update from The Pope’s Exorcist’s producer, Jeff Katz, the 2023 film will receive a sequel soon. The horror film was a sleeper hit at the box office and, despite not being perfect, was liked by many.
Russell Crowe in The Pope’s Exorcist
The Pope’s Exorcist mostly earned mixed reviews from critics. However, it seems like the makers want to mimic the first film’s unexpected success. Earlier this year, Russell Crowe discussed the possibility of numerous follow-ups to the Julius Avery directorial. Jeff Katz has now confirmed that the universe will expand and follow the blueprint of the Planet of the Apes franchise for its title.

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe plays real-life exorcist Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist, which made an impressive $76 million in theaters last year and shot to the top of Netflix’s streaming charts in the wake of its theatrical release. We had learned almost exactly one year ago that Screen Gems was working on a sequel, but what’s the latest on that?
In a recent chat with Virgin Media Television’s The Six O’Clock Show – brought to our attention by MovieWeb – Russell Crowe himself provided a fresh update on the future of our favorite Vespa-riding exorcist. It sounds like a trilogy had originally been planned at Screen Gems, but a change of studio heads has muddied up the works at this particular moment in time.
Crowe explained to the show when asked if he would be reprising the role of Gabriele Amorth, “That’s in discussion at the moment.

Sydney Sweeney‘s second film of 2024 is finally here, let’s hope that it doesn’t turn into a disaster like the first one. Produced by Sweeney herself, Immaculate is a psychological horror film and it follows the story of a young nun who joins a convent in the Italian countryside. Her quiet life quickly turns into a nightmare because of the horrific secrets hidden in the convent. Directed by Michael Mohan, Immaculate also stars Simona Tabasco, Benedetta Porcaroli, and Álvaro Morte. So, if you loved Sweeney’s horror film here are some similar movies you should check out next.
The Convent
Co-written and directed by Paul Hyett, the 2018 film British horror film titled The Convent gives a similar atmosphere to Sweeney’s Immaculate. The Convent tells us the story of a group of young women seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War II in an isolated convent in the countryside.

In director Michael Mohan’s Immaculate, evil lies not in the efforts of Satan and his demons but solely within the hearts of the men running a convent in the Italian countryside and, to a lesser degree, the women who answer directly to them. In the opening scene, we witness a terrified young nun (Simona Tabasco) desperately trying to escape the convent, only to be hunted down and restrained by a creepy quartet of red-masked nuns. From this point on, it’s abundantly clear that something is off at Our Lady of Sorrows, even if it takes a young American nun, Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), who’s freshly arrived at the convent, quite a while to figure out that serious trouble is brewing in this little corner of paradise.
While Cecilia arrives in Italy as a doe-eyed innocent, even she’s all too aware of the Catholic Church’s recent scandals,...

The end of the year always brings about reflection, so it felt appropriate to recall the moments that helped define 2023 in horror. As in, the unforgettable moments that shaped the conversation whether through watercooler discussions or going viral on social media. Consider this a fun trip down memory lane before 2024 ushers in its own new wave of horrors.
These ten memorable horror moments stood out, and catapulted their respective movies, video games, or TV series into the public conversation.

When promoting Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg claimed that every war movie is an anti-war movie. I think this is doubly true when it comes to genre cinema. After all, what better way to immerse audiences in the horrors of war than by telling a story specifically designed to scare them?
Hell, sometimes the war itself doesn’t even need to happen onscreen, like in the case of 1954’s Godzilla – one of the all-time best commentaries on nuclear warfare. And with Takashi Yamazaki returning the radioactive dinosaur to his post-war roots in Godzilla Minus One, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six more war-time horror movies for fans of historical terror.
While not all of the films on this list take place during a war, they all incorporate warfare and its consequences into their stories. That being said, don’t forget to comment below with your...

Supernatural horror genre audiences can add Julius Avery‘s The Pope’s Exorcist to their 2023 list of films to see. It’s a darker religious film than Ron Howard‘s Tom Hanks-led The Da Vinci Code (2006) and Angels & Demons (2009). The Pope’s Exorcist was based on and adapted from the famous Exorcist of Rome, Father Gabriele Amorth‘s books, An Exorcist Tells His Story (1990) and An Exorcist: More Stories (1992). Most of the film’s 103 minutes is set in 1987, in Castile, Spain. Although it is a supernatural horror, its storyline and conversations add a bit of humor to the film.

In 2020, Screen Gems acquired the rights to the story of Father Gabriele Amorth, the Italian priest who reportedly performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. Ángel Gómez was originally hired as director, although the project would see changes in 2022, as Julius Avery took over directorial duties while Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos would offer script revisions. Now, The Pope’s Exorcist sees a horror film made around the man apparently known as ‘the James Bond of exorcists.’
In 1987, an Italian village is visited by Father Amorth (Russell Crowe), the pope’s personal exorcist. His arrival involves investigating a man’s apparent possession by a demon, which Amorth taunts by claiming it could not even possess a pig. This is all part of the exorcist’s plan as, once the pig is possessed,...

Amazon MGM Studios is going back for superhero seconds.
The streamer is developing a sequel to Samaritan, its 2022 action movie starring Sylvester Stallone, and has hired Bragi F. Schut to pen the script. Schut also wrote the first movie.
Stallone is returning as producer, as is his Balboa Productions partner Braden Aftergood. Stallone is also reprising his starring role with a deal made prior to the actors strike.
Samaritan, directed by Julius Avery, told of a young boy who is saved from a beating by a sanitation worker. The boy comes to believe that the older man is a superhero who disappeared 20 years earlier, after an epic battle with his archenemies. The movie, which premiered exclusively on Prime Video on Aug. 26, 2022, in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide, overperformed for the company and was the No. 1 film on the service for three consecutive weeks, according to Amazon.
Schut wrote the first script on spec.

This article contains some spoilers for "The Nun II."
If horror has a name, it must be ... Indiana Jones? Scoff if you must, but the first three cinematic adventures of Henry Jones Jr. contain numerous horror movie bonafides, from the melting faces of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" to the heart-ripping terror of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and, of course, the rapid-aging transformation seen in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."
Honestly, though, it'd be fair if you did scoff, because Indiana Jones has become a little less synonymous with religion-inspired horror imagery thanks to his latter-day sequels, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." Supposedly the last ever Indy installment (certainly the last with star Harrison Ford), this year's "Dial of Destiny" sent Dr. Jones off with what I consider to be a clever, insightful, and richly layered adventure film.

We've seen some incredible works of horror cinema come out this year, small indie movies that broke big at the box office like "Skinamarink" and its experimental filmmaking, or movies that received critical acclaim and crafted whole universes for themselves like "Talk to Me." Even blockbuster horror releases like "Evil Dead Rise" and "Scream VI" managed to surpass expectations and add new things to their respective longstanding franchises.
And then there are also movies that did not make that big of an impact originally but are finally finding an audience that sees how brilliant they are in their own way. Movies that become big hits on streaming. Movies like "The Pope's Exorcist," which is now streaming on Netflix.
Like many horror movies, especially many possession horror movies, "The Pope's Exorcist" is based on a true story. Unlike those other ones, however, this is actually true (no it isn't). Director Julius Avery...

Brought to the big screen by Sony earlier this year, The Pope’s Exorcist was quietly a box office hit back in April, scaring up $76 million worldwide on a production budget of just $18 million. We’ve heard that a sequel is already in early development, and Sony is surely thrilled to hear that the Russell Crowe film is finding even more of an audience over on Netflix.
The Pope’s Exorcist hit Netflix on August 16 and it’s currently the #1 most popular movie on the streaming service, beating out films including brand new Netflix Originals like The Monkey King and Heart of Stone. It didn’t take long for the film to shoot to the top of Netflix’s charts, no doubt aided by its profile being raised by the theatrical release earlier this year.

Actor Russell Crowe doesn’t want to be asked anything about ‘Gladiator 2’. The actor said that he should be paid for the amount of questions he asked about a film he is not even in. The actor was speaking to the media at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, reports Variety. He said: “It has nothing to do with me. In that world, I am dead. Six feet under. The 57th Karlovy Vary Film Festival is highlighting two of the biggest stars of the 2000s, announcing Friday that Russell Crowe will receive the 2023 lifetime achievement honor, the Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema, and securing Johnny Depp to feature in this year’s festival trailer.
Crowe will also show off his musical chops at the Czech festival, taking the stage to perform with his band Indoor Garden Party at the Karlovy Vary opening night concert on June 30.
Since his breakthrough performance as an Australian skinhead in Geoffrey Wright’s Romper Stomper in 1992, Crowe has been unavoidable on the global film scene. His iconic turns as rough cop Bud White in Curtis Hanson’s L. A. Confidential (1997), as Big Tobacco whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand in Michael Mann’s The Insider (1999), as Roman general Maximus in Ridley Scott’s sword-and-sandals epic Gladiator (2000), and as mentally-ill mathematical genius John Nash...

Julius Avery’s The Pope’s Exorcist effectively stands out in the exorcism horror subgenre. The film centers on Father Gabriele Amorth, a real-life Vatican exorcist who claimed to perform more than 50,000 exorcisms throughout his lifetime. Father Amorth was an expert in demonology and wrote several books on exorcism. The movie, however, takes creative liberties by showing a family whose little child has been possessed by one of the most powerful demons. But the demon has no interest in the boy or his family. Instead, he wants to approach Father Amorth by using the child as a conduit. Father Amorth, played by Russell Crowe, is shown in the movie as a man of deep faith and unflinching conviction in his mission to fight the forces of evil. Father Amorth investigates the demon’s nature while he conducts the exorcism on the possessed child, learning details that may enable him to terminate the possession permanently.

The Pope’s Exorcist is the latest horror film from director Julius Avery, starring Russell Crowe. With Alex Essoe, Franco Nero and Laurel Marsden. Based on the two memoirs written by Father Gabriele Amorth: An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories.
An extravagant horror movie that goes absolutely nowhere, but turns out entertaining and amusing, in part thanks to Russell Crowe who somehow saves the day.
We are not going to get into controversies about the supposed “realism” of the proposal.
Within the genre, decent.
The Pope’s Exorcist Movie review
The best: Russell Crowe and his Italian accent speaking English. It is even “funny” that someone has taken this “seriously” which, apparently, has gone unnoticed.
The movie begins with a warning “be careful, he’s speaking in English”, so we must come to the logical conclusion: he’s possessed. Then there’s the good performance of the...

Bloody Disgusting has been provided with an exclusive featurette video this afternoon, teasing the film’s at-home release and featuring insights from star Russell Crowe and more.
“It’s very hard to make original exorcism-based material,” producer Jeff Katz notes. So how did the filmmakers go about bringing something different to the exorcism arena?
“There’s definitely levels of intrigue and investigation in the movie which feel different from what you might find in another type of horror film,” Russell Crowe explains in the video.
Julius Avery (Overlord) directed The Pope’s Exorcist.

Russell Crowe is on the brink of 60, and appears to be taking a let-'er-rip approach to acting. The three-time Academy Award nominee (and winner of one) is no longer being precious about his role choices. After hamming it up alongside RZA in the Wu-Tang Clan founder's unabashedly gory martial arts epic "The Man with the Iron Fists," Crowe eagerly sought out parts in genre flicks that were highly unlikely to bring him more Oscar glory. Though he hasn't completely cut prestige pictures out of his cinematic diet, his best performance of the last decade was as a Yoo-hoo-obsessed detective in Shane Black's brilliant buddy comedy "The Nice Guys."
Crowe threw an extra layer of glaze on the ham as the Greek god Zeus in Taika Waititi's "Thor: Love and Thunder." It's a disappointingly uneven MCU installment, but Crowe's thick, Zorba-like accent is a hoot. While Crowe's broadly comedic...

Bad news for demons, good news for fans of ridiculous but entertaining horror schlock: Father Amorth, aka the Pope’s Exorcist, will return… in a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist. It’s been a few weeks since Julius Avery as a Vespa-riding, one-liner grumbling, demon-busting Father Amorth – a real-life figure whose exploits inspired (how loosely depends on your own personal opinion on this whole ‘demons and exorcisms’ thing) the first film’s story – and it seems it’s been a hit for Screen Gems and Sony Pictures. Enough so that more Amorth looks to be on the horizon.
According to Bloody Disgusting, early development has begun on a sequel, expected to see Russell Crowe return in the lead role. And if you have a problem with that, take it up with his boss: The Pope. It’s clear that Crowe was having a blast playing a larger-than-life demon-slayer, his...

If you like exorcism movies and the Catholic Church, boy do we have some good news for you! "The Pope's Exorcist," which stars Oscar-winner Russell Crowe as the exorcist in question, is getting a sequel. This is according to the folks at Bloody Disgusting, who bring word that Sony and Screen Gems are in early development on a follow-up to the hit horror flick, which is currently smack dab in the middle of its theatrical run. But they're clearly wasting no time in getting a follow-up moving in the right direction.
Few details are available at this time, but it is believed that Crowe will return in the lead role. Development is underway at the studio, but there's no word on who will pen the screenplay, what the story will look like, or whether or not director Julius Avery will be back in the saddle. Made on a budget of $18 million, the supernatural thriller The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), which stars Russell Crowe as real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth, has racked up over $52 million at the global box office since its release earlier this month. Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems must be very satisfied with how well the movie is doing, because our friends at Bloody Disgusting have been informed that a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist is now in early development!
Details on the sequel aren’t available yet, but it looks like Crowe is going to have a rematch with the forces of evil.
A few years ago, The Exorcist director William Friedkin made a documentary about Father Gabriele Amorth (and you can read our review of The Devil and Father Amorth at This Link), who passed away in 2016 at the age of 91. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Screen Gems acquired the...

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe plays real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist, the brand new horror movie from director Julius Avery (Overlord). The Screen Gems horror movie has thus far scared up $52 million worldwide, and Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report that a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist is now in early development.
Bloody Disgusting’s sources indicate that development is underway on The Pope’s Exorcist 2, but we don’t have any further details at this time. We do expect Crowe to return.
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
The smart thing about The Pope’s Exorcist is that the production budget was quite low, reportedly just $18 million. This set the horror movie up for success, allowing it to become profitable in theaters after just one week of release. The same can’t be said about Universal’s Renfield, which reportedly cost $65 million and has thus far made just $17.9 million.

Over the weekend, something unexpected happened. At least at the box office.
Sony’s “The Pope’s Exorcist,” a slimly budgeted supernatural thriller based, in part, on the real-life story of Father Gabriele Amorth (played by Russell Crowe), a Roman Catholic priest and former Resistance fighter in World War II who by the year 2000 had boasted that he had performed over 50,000 exorcisms, went up against more fearsome opponent than the devil himself – “Renfield,” a big-budget horror comedy from Universal starring Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult. Incredibly, “The Pope’s Exorcist” came out on top.
And much of that success had to do with the nimble direction of Julius Avery, the Australian director of Bad Robot’s criminally underrated “Overlord” and last year’s Sylvester Stallone vehicle “Samaritan.”
TheWrap talked to Avery about getting past the tired tropes of the exorcism genre, working with Crowe and what his “Flash Gordon” movie was going...

It was a pretty big weekend at the box office for horror films, as both "Renfield" and "The Pope's Exorcist" hit theaters with Universal and Sony, respectively, looking to capitalize on moviegoers who enjoy vampires and/or possessions. Alas, neither of them stood a chance against the might of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which is now the biggest movie of the year worldwide. Be that as it may, one of them managed to find a sizable enough audience while another instantly found itself square in the middle of Bombsville.
"The Pope's Exorcist," which stars Russell Crowe, came in second over the weekend with a $9 million haul, per The Numbers. Given that the film carries an $18 million budget, that's not a bad start. It's not a great start, but it's certainly not a bad one. It's a middle-of-the-road horror movie that worked as counterprogramming against a family-friendly blockbuster. Considering that...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot points, including the ending for “The Pope’s Exorcist” currently playing in theaters.
Director Julius Avery has “only seen parts” of William Friedkin’s classic “The Exorcist.”
“I’m not a massive aficionado of exorcist movies,” he tells Variety.
Yet despite that, his latest release, “The Pope’s Exorcist,” which is based on Gabriele Amorth’s books “An Exorcist Tells His Story” and “An Exorcist: More Stories,” follows the Vatican’s chief exorcist to Spain. Played by Russell Crowe, Father Amorth teams up with a priest, Father Esquibel (Daniel Zovatto), to investigate a young mother, Julia (Alex Essoe), and her children, who have recently become possessed by a powerful demon.
Avery says of Amorth, the Catholic priest who served for 30 years as the head exorcist of the Diocese of Rome, “I found it interesting that this was a real job, that there is a chief exorcist at the Vatican.

Mamma mia! The meatballs and spaghetti sauce are a-flying at the box office this weekend as new release "The Pope's Exorcist" collides with last week's reigning champion, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." Oh, and "Renfield" is also out this weekend, but there aren't really any big Italian themes in that movie.
Perhaps that's why "Renfield" is off to a pretty dismal start. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the horror-comedy about Dracula's co-dependent relationship with his bug-powered familiar was expected to debut at No. 2, but instead looks set to take third place in its opening weekend. The film, led by Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult, is projected to gross $7.5 million this weekend, which isn't great given its $65 million production budget. It's safe to say that "The Croods" will continue to be Cage's biggest box office hit for the time being.

Universal and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a bona fide blockbuster.
The Nintendo video game adaptation is now on course to gross $80 million in its second weekend of play at the domestic box office from 4,371 theaters, notably more than expected and representing a drop of just 45 percent. By the end of Sunday, the PG pic will sit at a projected $340.8 million domestically and $318.6 million overseas for a jaw-dropping global tally of $659.4 million.
The animated sensation smashed numerous records in its launch over the long Easter holiday. And by mid-week, Mario zoomed past Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to rank as the top-grossing movie of the year to date at the domestic, international and worldwide box office. It’s also now the No. 1 video game adaptation of all time after passing up Warcraft ($439.4 million) and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu ($449.8 million).

Spinning heads, seared flesh, holy incantations in Latin: could it be… Satan? We have reached the 50th anniversary of The Exorcist, William Friedkin’s blockbusting, genre-transforming horror landmark that has been parodied, sequelized (on multiple occasions), and firmly embedded in the collective cultural consciousness. And now along comes The Pope’s Exorcist, a passable little supernatural horror spectacle starring a big, bearded Russell Crowe trying on an Italian accent as Father Gabriele Amorth, apparently a real-life exorcist of some renown.

Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage is starring in his first studio movie in over a decade with the release of Universal Pictures' "Renfield." What's more, the film sees Cage playing the iconic role of Dracula in director Chris McKay's unique take on literature's most beloved bloodsucker. While the movie has much going for it on paper, including a great cast led by Nicholas Hoult and Awkwafina, its financial fate looks a little grim, as the early box office returns have not been great.
It's early, but according to Variety, "Renfield" took in just $900,000 in Thursday night preview screenings. That sets it up for a $10 million (give or take) domestic debut. Competition is certainly going to be an issue as "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is going to easily top the charts in its second weekend following its record-shattering $377 million global opening. But McKay's latest also comes with a $65 million budget, which isn't helping its case any.

Competition is certainly going to be an issue as "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is going to easily top the charts in its second weekend following its record-shattering $377 million global opening. But McKay's latest also comes with a $65 million budget, which isn't helping its case any.

Julius Avery’s bucket list is now a little bit shorter.
The Australian director behind The Pope’s Exorcist has wanted to work with the New Zealand-born, Australian-raised Russell Crowe since he first saw the actor’s breakout performance in Romper Stomper (1992). The Australian drama earned Crowe the attention of Hollywood, and he’s since gone on to have a storied career that includes an Oscar win for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2001).
Crowe’s latest role as Father Gabriele Amorth in Avery’s The Pope’s Exorcist is based on the real Father Amorth’s memoirs that chronicle his time as the Chief Exorcist to the Vatican. But similar to James Wan’s The Conjuring franchise, Avery merely used real life as a jumping-off point for his heightened genre picture about a young boy’s possession.

Five wide releases hit theaters this weekend, but Illumination and Universal’s Super Mario Bros. Movie will reign supreme with a second weekend, -60% of $58M. Already the plumbers have plunged a running stateside total through nine days of $260M, with $300M+ this weekend in sight.
Super Mario Bros grossed $9.4M yesterday at 4,343 locations, -13% from Wednesday’s $10.7M.
Two genre films aimed at dudes over 25 are battling it out, one funnier than the other in the face-off between Universal’s Nicolas Cage vampire comedy, Renfield, and Sony/Screen’s Gems Pope’s Exorcist starring Russell Crowe.
Renfield did $900K in previews last night to Pope’s Exorcist‘s $850K. Both were projecting $8M-$10M, however, Renfield looks to be at the top of that range. Renfield, at 62% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with critics (82% with moviegoers), is booked at 3,300 theaters, while Pope’s Exorcist is at 3,100 sites, saddled at 48% Rotten...

The Pope’s Exorcist draws basis from the books An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories, penned by Catholic priest and exorcist Gabriele Amorth. Screenwriters Michael Petroni (The Rite) and Evan Spiliotopoulos (The Unholy), along with director Julius Avery (Overlord), eschew the biopic approach when exploring Amorth’s tenure as an exorcist in favor of a by-the-books horror movie. Russell Crowe is the sole saving grace in this diluted and often silly entry in exorcism horror.
Avery’s latest introduces his rebellious Gabriel Amorth (Crowe) in a rural village in 1987. Amorth walks in with remarkable confidence and jovial mischief in his eyes as he quickly exposes a case of psychosis, not possession, leaving the local priest splattered in blood and the family shocked. Amorth barely has time to cuckoo at nuns and get scolded by higher-ups at the Vatican before he’s summoned to a crumbling abbey in Spain.

What if the Pope ... had an exorcist? Father Gabriele Amorth was a real priest who served as the exorcist of the Diocese of Rome, wrote a bunch of books, and founded the International Association of Exorcists. "The Exorcist" director William Friedkin even made a (not very good) documentary about him, called "The Devil and Father Amorth." Now, Father Amorth gets the Hollywood treatment with "The Pope's Exorcist," a biblically silly movie that has Russell Crowe playing the holy warrior.
Zipping around on a tiny Vespa and looking like he's cosplaying Orson Welles in "F is for Fake," Crowe's Amorth is a badass; a renegade; a rebel. He doesn't play by the church's rules, maaaan! And he's got a killer comeback to anyone who dares question his methods: "You have a problem with me, you take it up with my boss ... the Pope!" Hell yes! If there's a reason to see...
