She’s been nominated for seven BAFTAs (winning one), seven Golden Globes (winning two), a couple of Oscars and an Emmy. She’s worked with armfuls of top directors including Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton and David Cronenberg. And 40 years ago, she created one of sitcom’s best-loved characters as the capricious Queen Elizabeth (Queenie to her pals) in Blackadder.
And now Miranda Richardson has proven herself so good she’s been cast not once but twice in Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens, first playing Madame Tracy in series one, and now taking on the tailor-made role of Shax, who becomes Hell’s representative on Earth after Crowley (David Tennant) gets fired.
What better time to revisit some of Miranda Richardson’s most memorable performances, from her impressive film debut in Dance With a Stranger to her more recent appearances in Harry Potter and Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None?...

This story of two sisters, played by Josie Lawrence and Tanya Myers, returning home to sort their dead mother’s belongings avoids predictable genres, narratives and characters
British indie director Jon Sanders creates another of his low-key, thoughtful movies developed through improvisation; it is a static, eccentric chamber piece in some ways, but engaging and pregnant with ideas about mourning and grief. Josie Lawrence and Tanya Myers play Dot and Phoebe, two sisters who have come to the seaside home of their late mother, a singer and entertainer, to confront the daunting task of sorting out all her belongings and theatrical memorabilia.
This opens up painful memories and psychic wounds: however much they loved her, their mother was serially unfaithful to their father – once with a boyfriend of Phoebe’s – and now they don’t know how to feel. These themes of sexual transgression are strangely echoed in the present action,...

The actor looks back over a four-decade career balancing ‘serious’ drama and improv comedy, describes the making of her wholly improvised new film, and explains why we don’t see her on TV so much any more
“I hope they don’t want me to look wacky,” frets Josie Lawrence on the way to the photoshoot for this interview, because she’s here to talk about a serious film. On the other hand, she’d love a plug for her regular Sunday night slot at London’s Comedy Store, where she has been improvising on and off for 38 years. The contradiction is a fact of life for a performer whose gift of the gab on Friday night TV bagged her a permanent place in the heart of the nation, eclipsing the parallel career in which she was excelling as a classical actor of Shakespeare and Stoppard.

Named after the Mary Elizabeth Coleridge poem, Jon Sanders’ gently paced, thoughtful new film opens with a rendition of that poem in song by sisters Phoebe (Tanya Myers) and Dot (Josie Lawrence), with piano accompaniment by Tom (James Northcote). He has been looking after their mother’s house since her death, and now that they have arrived to deal with her possessions and say their final goodbyes to the place, the poem seems to speak to a personality which they both struggled to reconcile with and whose influence continues to shape their behaviour. “You thought because I had a mind that I could have no heart at all.”
Phoebe and Dot are performance artists and their manager, Monica (Anna Mottram), who is also a longstanding friend, is helping with the process of sorting out the house. She acts as a sounding board when they discuss old memories and their complex relationships with.

Good Omens, which became one of Amazon Prime Video’s front-rank shows when it premiered last May, will continue on the streaming service if the executive team has any say in it.
“We’re lucky to have an ongoing relationship with Neil” Gaiman, the series co-creator, Amazon’s TV co-head Vernon Sanders said during Saturday’s TCA executive session. “We’re so excited about how Season 1 has done for us. The notion has come up about whether we can revisit that world. It’s in Neil’s hands now but we’d love to do it. We’re finding that it just takes a little time, perhaps, in the case of Neil. But whatever he wants to do, we’re interested in.”
Gaiman and late co-author Terry Pratchett’s 1990 book, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, was the basis of the show’s debut season.

What do you do when Armageddon is days away and you’ve lost the Antichrist? Leave it to good and evil.
Amazon dropped the full-length trailer for Neil Gaiman‘s upcoming limited series “Good Omens” on Wednesday (watch above), giving us a closer look at Michael Sheen‘s finicky angel Aziraphale and David Tennant‘s carefree demon Crowley (and their questionable hair) as they team up to stop the apocalypse. The casting for the upcoming Amazon/BBC series “Good Omens” just keeps getting better and better. As revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour, Benedict Cumberbatch will play a small role in the final episode — as Satan.
Showrunner Neil Gaiman, who adapted the novel he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett for the screen, built up the announcement with the note that the previously announced Frances McDormand will be playing the role of God, and thus “we needed someone who could give Frances McDormand a run for their money.” But it was also news that was in line with how “Good Omens” has managed to attract an extraordinary cast, including David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Anna Maxwell Martin, Jon Hamm, Josie Lawrence, Adria Arjona, Michael McKean, Miranda Richardson, Jack Whitehall, and Nick Offerman.

A feel-good British comedy in the vein of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, the new film Finding Your Feet finds its own feet by presenting light and engaging fare employing veteran English actors in ways we rarely get to see them on the big screen. As I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), in these dark times this is the kind of hopeful, mature entertainment that just might drag older adult audiences out to the movies.
Exotic Marigold Hotel and its 2015 sequel proved there was a sizable worldwide crowd out there craving this kind of thing, and though it breaks no new ground, this Richard Loncraine-directed piece fits the bill nicely and gives the wondrous Imelda Staunton a lovely leading role in which she proves again her mettle as one of our best.

Watch this delightful and funny trailer for Roadside Attractions Finding Your Feet, in cinemas this spring.
The film had it’s gala premiere at the opening night of the 35th Turin Film Festival in November 2017.
When ‘Lady’ Sandra Abbott (Academy Award nominee Imelda Staunton, Maleficent, Vera Drake) discovers that her husband of forty years (John Sessions) is having an affair with her best friend (Josie Lawrence) she seeks refuge in London with her estranged, older sister Bif (Celia Imrie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Bridget Jones’ Baby). The two could not be more different — Sandra is a fish out of water next to her outspoken, serial dating, free-spirited sibling. But different is just what Sandra needs at the moment, and she reluctantly lets Bif drag her along to a community dance class, where gradually she starts finding her feet and romance as she meets her sister’s friends, Charlie (Timothy Spall...

The feel-good trailer for upcoming British production, Finding Your Feet starring Imelda Staunton, proves there is still life to be lived in your Golden Years.
Teaming up a cast of Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie, Timothy Spall, Joanna Lumley, John Sessions, Josie Lawrence and David Hayman, director Richard Loncraine has brought together the cream of veteran wholesome comedy project that oozes grand old British values in Finding Your Feet.
The trailer focuses on the middle-class Sandra (Staunton) as she forces herself on her sister Bif (Imrie), who lives on a council estate, in an attempt to start her life over after she discovers her husband’s betrayal in having an affair with her best friend. Almost strangers as sisters, the pair are given the opportunity to get to know each other again via geriatric dance classes, dating and travel. It’s a tale of self-discovery and learning to...

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

"The last time I hosted Whose Line Is It Anyway?, we had a Conservative government facing a weak opposition and Chris Evans was all over the telly."
Clive Anderson's opening monologue humorously explains how little has changed in the time that the hit improv show last aired on Channel 4.
Returning for a new run at London's Adelphi Theatre, and borrowing some games from the popular Us version, the stars of the beloved comedy series prove that they still have what it takes to make our sides split with giggles.
Regulars Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Josie Lawrence and Brad Sherwood join compere Anderson for the new live show, which has all the ridiculously silly situations and challenges from the original radio and TV shows.
As ever, the random nature of the show is what makes it brilliant, as the comics react quickly to the silly suggestions from the audience,...

The classic improvised comedy show Whose Line is It Anyway? is headed to the West End.
A new stage show - featuring stars of the original TV programme - will run at the Adelphi Theatre for two weeks from June 20.
Co-creators Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson will oversee the show, with regulars Colin Mochrie, Josie Lawrence, Greg Proops, Brad Sherwood and host Clive Anderson all set to appear.
The original show saw comedians act out improvised sketches and skits based on suggestions from the audience.
Anderson said: "It's great to be back in charge of the iconic Whose Line Is It Anyway? - joining up with some of the show's most impressive improvisers to play many of its best-loved games, together with some exciting new features, devised by its original creators.
"Expect all the fun of the television programme - only this time live on stage!"

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

A gentle, poignant dramedy about getting out of your comfort zone, one that smashes the tropes of microbudget films with its wildly original story. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Middle-aged, divorced, and seemingly a bit of a stick in the mud, Judith (Tessa Peake-Jones: Doctor Who) is so mortified that her daughter, Lily (Eleanor Wyld: Frequencies), has dropped out of law school to go live at Bonobo House — aka, the local “monkey sex cult” commune in their small English town — that she can barely even admit it to herself, never mind to her snooty, judgy neighbor. But enough is enough, and so Judith heads over to try to convince Lily to drop out of dropping out and get back to her real life. Instead, the commune’s leader,...

The first ever dramatisation of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's 1990 novel, Good Omens, is coming to BBC Radio 4...
Here's some news to put a spring in any fantasy fan's step: following the success of 2013's splendid Neverwhere dramatisation, BBC Radio 4 is working its magic on another UK modern classic, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's 1990 novel Good Omens.
Due to air in six parts over a single week in December 2014, Good Omens comes from the creative team behind Neverwhere, with The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy's Dirk Maggs adapting and directing, assisted by producer Heather Larmour and of course, Neil Gaiman.
It's the first time the co-authored novel, which tells a raucous story of ancient prophecies, impending armageddon, and sushi, has been adapted for radio, with progress on a much-anticipated film version with Terry Gilliam appearing to have stalled for the foreseeable. Jonathan Creek concludes its fifth series with a satisfying, comic noodle-scratcher...
This review contains spoilers.
5.3 The Curse Of The Bronze Lamp
After a disappointing start to the new series, Jonathan Creek seemed to return to form last week in The Sinner And The Sandman with a much more recognisable setup with one key mystery to solve. Despite not being the most exciting of mysteries, nor one of the most bloodthirsty; The Sinner and The Sandman certainly turned in some great performances, notably from John Bird. Alan Davies seemed more enthusiastic in the role as the eponymous hero and the whole setup felt a lot less perilous with far fewer contrived jokes or plot points.
Despite a more positive start to the episode, The Curse Of The Bronze Lamp still lacked pace and excitement. It has often been the case with previous series of Jonathan Creek...
