Two 6-year-old boys with leukemia earned their wings on Friday after being “pilots for a day” at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
Houston Pirrung and Jack Kirkbride, of the Annapolis area, became best friends while undergoing treatment at John Hopkins Hospital. After learning about the boys’ friendship, the Check-6 Foundation — which provides support to ailing children and military veterans — decided to give them a real-life pilot experience.
“The two developed an immediate bond — playing with cars, going on hospital hallway adventures and battling cancer — as teammates,” officials said in a statement obtained by People.

Chronicling the senior year of an all-girl high school’s Step Dance team, Amanda Lipitz’s Step is without a doubt one of the most genuinely moving, inspirational and thoroughly entertaining films of the year. This thrilling debut documentary manages to carry an important socio-political message without ever being preachy, moralising or unnecessarily provocative. Set against a background of turmoil and the severe poverty of an inner-city Baltimore neighbourhood, the film shines a light on the struggles faced by a group of girls on the cusp of womanhood, hoping to be the first generation in their respective families to be accepted into college and hopefully go on to to fulfil their full potential.
Founded in 2009, The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women aims to first and foremost help young underprivileged girls from African-American backgrounds prepare for college. With attentive tutoring and daily encouragement from their passionate teachers,...

Eddie returned to the Hamptons on Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 6 after hiding out in Passaic, New Jersey.
Why go back to Hank and Evan’s childhood home? Guilt, mostly. He feels guilty for abandoning his family all of those years ago and guilty for lying to them now.
And rightfully so.
Yes, Eddie panicked and made a poor decision, and this time he was lucky that Hank was there to save him, which led to one of my favorite moments.
When the receptionist at Passaic General Hospital asked Hank if the Hamptons was better than “down the shore,” I couldn’t help but laugh, because in Jersey, you never, ever say you’re going to the beach. Anyone who has grown up in New Jersey asks if you’re going down the shore.
Well played, Royal Pains, for getting it right.

Tony Staveacre writes: Colin Welland had started to add screenwriting to his distinguished acting credits when we invited him to be one of the judges for our BBC2 playwriting competition in 1972, alongside Keith Dewhurst and John Hopkins. The undisputed winner was a harbour-master’s wife from Sunderland, Denise Robertson, and this first play launched a great broadcasting career for her. Her play – The Soda Water Fountain – was recorded and shown on BBC2, after which we were to broadcast a judges’ discussion. This prompted Colin to launch into a tirade about the production that he’d just seen, and a complaint that the play had been woefully miscast, with not a single authentic Tyneside voice to be heard.
He had a point. The leading role was played by Jessie Matthews. Also, the play had been recorded in a BBC studio, when it should have been filmed on the real north-east locations where it was set,...

Back in 2012, our staff decided to group together and come up with a list of the best films in the 007, James Bond franchise. With Spectre rolling out this weekend, we decided to republish the article. Let us know which is your favourite, and be sure to check out our review of Spectre here.
#1: From Russia With Love
Directed by Terence Young
Written by Richard Maibaum and Johanna Harwood
1963, UK
50 years later, and with twenty three “official” entries, From Russia With Love represents the very best of the Bond franchise. Skyfall is the closest to be considered, at best – almost equal to what was achieved in ’64 – but From Russia With Love is still unparalleled. Although it is the second in the series, and although it feels like no Bond film that followed, it is the film that solidifies all the Bond elements into a formula – a template that carries on,...

Thunderball
Directed by Terrence Young
Written by John Hopkins and Richard Maibaum
1965, UK
Being a relative novice to the James Bond canon, I have never grown accustomed to the many colorful details that have leaked from the Bond films into popular culture. Thunderball, as I discovered, is the home to many of the Bond clichés, as they’ve more or less become. It is, from what I can understand, the mold that which every Bond film is created.
There are the clever puns delivered with a wink, daring escapes using proto-gadgets that bend the boundaries of belief, the beautiful women, seemingly hypnotized by the smooth debonair Bond, and of course, the cartoonish villain and his cartoonish plot to conquer, or destroy the world.
These are all clear marks of every Bond film, past, present, and future. And though there were films that used these ideas before, and even Bond films that used the same formula,...

It's hard enough to redefine a genre once in a career, but horror virtuoso Wes Craven managed to do it twice.
The prolific writer-director, who died Sunday at age 76, ushered in two distinct eras of suburban slashers, first in the 1980s with his iconic Nightmare on Elm Street and its indelible, razor-fingered villain Freddy Krueger. He did it again in the 1990s with the self-referential "Scream."
Both reintroduced the fringe genre to mainstream audiences and spawned successful franchises.
Perhaps it was his perfectly askew interpretation of the medium that resonated with his nail-biting audiences.
"Horror films don't create fear," Craven said. "They release it."
Craven didn't solely deal in terror. He also directed the 1999 drama Music of the Heart, which earned Meryl Streep an Oscar nomination. But his name, and his legacy, will always be synonymous with horror.

By the mid-1960s Sean Connery had completed his contract with Saltzman and Broccoli and feared being typecast as 007. So to lure him back to appear in a sixth Bond film (Diamonds Are Forever, 1971), United Artists promised him $2m to make two movies of his own choice. The first he picked was This Story of Yours, a grim police procedural based on a play by John Hopkins, one of the writing team on Z-Cars, the realistic BBC TV series that had transformed the image of the British , taking him out of Dock Green and dropping him in a depraved new world. Hopkins’s reputation was running high at the time. His quartet of TV plays, Talking to a Stranger, was widely regarded as the best work written to date for the small screen, and This Story of Yours was put on at the Royal Court under Harold Pinter’s auspices.

Author Tom Clancy, who became famous for best-sellers like "The Hunt for Red October" and "Patriot Games," died on Tuesday at John Hopkins Hospital after a brief illness. He was 66 years old. Clancy's career started when President Reagan received "Red October" as a Christmas gift and joked at a dinner that he was losing sleep because he couldn't put the book down. Clancy later said that helped put him on the New York Times best-seller list. A string of successful books followed, including "Red Storm Rising," "Patriot Games," "The Cardinal of the Kremlin," "Clear and Present Danger," "The Sum of All Fears," and "Without Remorse." Many of Clancy's works were turned into blockbuster movies starring actors like Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. The latest, based on his CIA hero Jack Ryan, is set for release later this year. Clancy also ventured into video games with the best-selling "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier,...

Who has the guts to challenge Darth Vader? Mother nature, apparently ... via a Pac-Man-shaped dune. Seriously. Dun dun da da da dun dun!
The U.K.'s Independent reports a giant sand dune with a gaping mouth (which actually looks like the yellow video game character, no joke) is headed straight for the Tunisian set of Mos Espa, the Tatooine spaceport where Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader grew up in "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace." Boo!
And this is a pretty sticky situation because the fictional "Star Wars" set is a major tourist attraction in Tunisia, bringing in some serious dough every year from the George Lucas faithful (and, we suppose, anyone who's obsessed with that random band who made a music video there).
A scientific report from the University of Arizona indicates the dune — technically called a barchan — is moving swiftly at 50 feet a year and is on its way,...

Almost a year after we last heard anything, it’s been revealed that the film adaptation of Smiley’s People is still in the works. The film will serve as a follow-up to last year’s acclaimed big screen take on John Le Carre‘s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Producer Eric Fellner has confirmed in a recent interview that work is progressing on the next installment. Collider has spoken to producer who stated:
We are working on another one. (Producer) Tim Bevan is putting it together as we speak with (screenwriter) Peter Straughan and Tomas Alfredson, so yes it’s in development. … (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) did unbelievably well and it didn’t cost hardly anything…But things take time. Tim is passionate about making sure we do another one.
‘Smiley’s People’ is the third and final novel in John le Carre’s ‘Karla Trilogy,’ of which ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ is the first.

I’d like to once again thank everyone who participated and furthermore, thank everyone who voted for having good taste. I cannot argue with the final results. These are indeed the best Bond films. Enjoy!
Although it is the second in the series, and although...

Thunderball
Directed by Terrency Young
These are all ear marks of every Bond film, past, present, and future. And though there were films that used these ideas before, and even Bond films that used the same formula,...

Welcome to the Season 9 premiere of Grey's Anatomy. Last season's cliffhanger stranded half of Seattle Grace's staff in the woods of Idaho after a plane crash. As we awaited the fate of Arizona, Mark, Meredith, Derek and Cristina we said goodbye to Lexie Grey.
This episode picks up a month after their rescue. Seattle Grace is crawling with a batch of new interns, Mark is in a coma and Arizona is nowhere in sight. This can't be good.
The episode jumps back and forth in time showing glimpses of Mark's life. We go from present day 2012 to 1994, Derek's wedding day to Addison. Mark and Derek talk before Derek takes his vows then we skip to 2007, where Mark is trying to convince Callie to make a sex tape as they lie in bed together and make out. (Ummm, wrong audience.) Luckily for Sofia (and everyone else...

If you know (or are) a fan of James Bond films, especially if you’re looking to expand your Blu-Ray collection, you’ll want to mark your calendars for September 25th. The full collection, along with some great bonus features, will be released as Bond 50, to celebrate 50 years of James Bond.
Beyond getting all 22 films, which come with over 100 hours of bonus features, there will also be an additional disc of bonuses, with all new featurettes, including The World of Bond, a Pop-Up Trivia optional ride through the entire franchise. While any 22-movie set is unlikely to come with an “automatic purchase” price tag, this is one that is sure to tempt quite a few fans. The entire set of Bond films is hard to pass up, and with the nearly unbelievable treasure trove of bonuses, it really is a collection that kicks up the value.

A surprisingly high percentage of young men and women believe they can't get pregnant! The unlikely conclusion is causing men to ditch their protection and leaving women open to becoming the next star of 'Teen Mom.' A new study by John Hopkins University researchers shows 19 percent of women and 13 percent of men between the ages of 18-29 believe they're infertile, Babble reports. This perception of infertility is leading more men to "anticipate having unprotected sex in the next three months." With multiple spin-offs of MTV's Teen Mom and 16 And Pregnant, we still see young people need schooling on the facts of fertility and contraception. Just thinking you're infertile is certainly not a suitable form of birth control, teens! What do You think of this study, HollyMoms? What's new is always old, and in this recurring column, I'll be taking a look at the classic genre movies that have influenced today's new releases. In honor of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, this week it's Bob Clark's 1979 Holmes-vs.-the-Ripper thriller, Murder by Decree.
Navigating the deserted misty streets of 1880s London from the point of view of its notorious villain, Jack the Ripper, Bob Clark's camera delivers an immediate jolt of Black Christmas-style malevolence to Murder by Decree, the director's superlative Sherlock Holmes adventure. Armed with John Hopkins' smart script (based on Elwyn Jones and John Lloyd's book The Ripper File), Clark situates his iconic sleuth in the midst of England's most infamous crime spree, pitting him against the Ripper and, in doing so, a social hierarchy as inflexible as it is entrenched. Your iPhone can make calls (sort of) and check your email, sure, but new apps are being developed that will allow you to monitor your own health with just your phone.
The iPhone is good for more than just playing Angry Birds and making on-the-fly Twitter updates. James Cagney, the quintessential movie gangster
Seemingly always en vogue, gangsters have been especially so in recent years. The grand seigneur of American cinema, Martin Scorsese, finally won his long-deserved first Academy Award for Best Achievement in Directing for “The Departed” in 2007. Michael Mann’s 2009 effort “Public Enemies” was a big-budget production with high-dollar stars. The HBO drama “The Sopranos” attracted millions of viewers per week for eight years. “Sopranos” writer Terry Winter teamed up with Scorsese in 2010 for another acclaimed gangster series, “Boardwalk Empire,” which won two Golden Globes earlier this year. Sheffield Crucible
The effect of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor slicing one another with lines as sharp as flensing knives in the 1966 film version of Edward Albee's 1962 play is still emotion-scouringly vivid. (Taylor, who died last week, won an Oscar for her performance.) Their coruscating exchanges seemed set to define the middle-aged, warring, married couple, George and Martha - whose names, borrowed from President Washington and his wife, signal their function as emblems of the ruin of the American dream.
Sian Thomas and Jasper Britton, though, seize the parts for their own in this Northern Stage and Sheffield theatres co-production. Thomas's Martha, part praying mantis, part puppet, jerks around the stage as if impelled by forces trying to rip free from her control – despair, grief and rage. Britton's George is a perfect foil – an oxymoronic worm with a backbone. John Hopkins and Lorna Beckett shine as the initially pure-seeming but morally putrid younger couple.

How did the film come about?
Aaron Rottinghaus: Josh and I have known each other for a number of years, we worked on a small indie horror film. Josh was one of the actors in the film, I was the editor.
