Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna makes her feature film directorial debut with the Netflix romantic comedy Your Place or Mine. McKenna really scored with her first directing gig, snagging romantic comedy veterans Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher in starring roles.
Witherspoon and Kutcher play best friends who reside on opposite coasts. Debbie and Peter had a one-night stand 20 years ago and although the romantic relationship ended pretty much as soon as it began, they’ve remained friends through thick and thin. When Debbie needs to spend some time in New York City, she and Peter swap homes, with Peter playing babysitter to Debbie’s son and taking up residence in her LA home. A change in location sparks a change in perspective, with Debbie and Peter realizing there might be more to their relationship than either previously considered.

It's raining something biblical in Nashville, coming down like vengeance between the roadway signs for chicken wings and Jesus and Donald Trump. And here, inside a farm-fresh joint called Butcher and Bee, at a table spread with pickled okra and fried chicken and kale, Evan Rachel Wood is questioning the nature of our reality, the cogs and wheels that have created this very scene, up to and possibly including the guy posted up at the bar who looks like an older Elvis, if Elvis were crazy tall and wearing vintage tweed.

Your regular round-up of the latest animation news, from HitFix reporter Emily Rome Welcome to the first installment of AnimationFix, where on a regular basis I’ll supply you a round-up of recent animation news and my musings on both the hidden gems and the buzziest new footage and art from the world of toons. First treat for you today: Regina Spektor’s Japanese-influenced cover of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” recorded for stop-motion animation Kubo and the Two Strings. One of the film’s trailers previously gave us an early listen of the cover but just an instrumental section without Spektor’s vocals. Kubo and the Two Strings, a action adventure movie set in a world inspired by ancient Japan, is a samurai story that aims for an epic scale rarely seen in stop-motion. In the film, young Kubo plays a magical three-stringed instrument like a shamisen, a Japanese...

Some days, I really have to pinch myself, because getting the opportunity to be at tonight’s Halloween announcement is easily one of the coolest moments I’ve had in the seven years I’ve lived in California.
Last week, I received a mysterious call from Josh Raffel at Blumhouse Productions, who invited me to a secretive event to be held tonight, May 23rd, and other than providing me with a time, that’s all the information I was given. Once I arrived tonight, along with a select group of journalists, the mystery was finally revealed with the announcement of a new partnership behind a brand new Halloween, which is bringing together Miramax, Blumhouse Productions, Trancas International’s Malek Akkad (longtime producer of the Halloween franchise), as well as legendary Master of Horror John Carpenter in an executive producer role for the film. Lots of famous folks have been throwing their support behind Jennifer Lawrence after the actress penned a scathing essay condemning Hollywood's gender-based wage gap. Now, a fellow Oscar winner -- and previous America's Sweetheart title-holder -- is also chiming in with her approval.
In an interview with "Good Morning America," Julia Roberts said she completely agreed with Lawrence's thoughts on the issue -- and said she respected the young actress for speaking up.
"I applaud her. She's a young, fabulous, talented whippersnapper and I love that she's stirring things up," Roberts told "Gma."
And the lovefest didn't stop there.
" ... [S]he's so energetic and seems to speak her mind and I think it's great. I think it's great to kind of shake things up," the actress added. "I think it's great to go, 'Excuse me. Over here. I know something now and I'm frustrated by it and why is this?'"

Were they not really friends after all?
Jennifer Aniston surprised everyone last week when she secretly wed fiance Justin Theroux during an impromptu ceremony at the couple's home. But two surprising names didn't make the guest list: Aniston's "Friends" costars Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc.
The actors revealed that shocking omission this week during an interview with People at a Television Critics Association event in Los Angeles. But according to the former Chandler and Joey, there are no hard feelings.
Both actors wished Aniston and Theroux well, with LeBlanc calling the newlyweds "a great couple."
"I think she's happy. And that's all I care about is that Jen's happy," LeBlanc told People, revealing that he also missed the actress's first wedding, to ex-husband Brad Pitt, back in 2000, because he was off shooting a movie in Austria.
"If she wanted me there, I would have been there," LeBlanc said of Aniston's marriage to Theroux.

Not everyone is adept at whistling, and that apparently goes for the entire cast of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2" -- even when they're trying to whistle a tune from their own movie.
During the "Mockingjay" panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, castmates Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth all tried -- and adorably, hilariously failed -- to replicate the series's iconic Mockingjay whistle tone. But the trio, and the rest of their castmates on the panel, just could not nail the four-note melody, which was memorably used by Rue and Katniss in the first film, and brought back throughout the rest of the series as a Mockingjay rallying cry of sorts.

James Wan will scare the bejeezus out of audiences again, as Deadline reports the director will return to helm "The Conjuring 2."
Wan directed the first "Conjuring" flick, which was a hit for New Line, and execs were eager to bring him back for the follow-up. The sequel is set to begin production next summer, with an eye for a 2016 release. (The original fall 2015 release schedule was bumped to accommodate Wan's "Fast & Furious 7," which was delayed in the aftermath of star Paul Walker's sudden death in November 2013.)
"It was during the editing of 'Fast & Furious 7' that my brain started sparking ideas for 'The Conjuring' sequel," Wan told Deadline. "Taking a break from horror has allowed me to be creatively rejuvenated. I'm excited to tell the story of the next case-file of Ed & Lorraine Warren and expand on this world we've created."

On the outskirts of Comic-Con, there lurks something far scarier than Browncoat cosplayers. Across the street, the Petco Park Stadium has been turned into a militarized zone where the army has deployed troops around the area.
Officials carry bullhorns and warn everyone to stay away from the outbreak. Come any closer and you risk infection.
Welcome to The Walking Dead: Escape, an interactive zombie obstacle course based on Robert Kirkman's graphic novels.
Dread Central was invited to be among the first people inside after the stadium had been turned into an apocalyptic landscape.
Attendees could opt for one of three spots:
Survivors, who run the obstacle course and avoid the undead. Walkers, who get made up by the FX team and are set loose in the park to try to grab survivors. Spectators, who get to hang out behind the barricades and laugh at the poor fools trying to avoid getting eaten.

Dragons, dragons and more dragons!
Director Dean DeBlois’ magnificent How To Train Your Dragon 2 is the thrilling second chapter of the epic trilogy.

This time around, they face a different kind of dragon problem, albeit a good one: There’s so many of them! With everyone owning his or her own personal dragon and dragons permeating their way of life, the isle of Berk is a vastly different place.
But when grown-up responsibilities loom on the horizon, Hiccup and his faithful dragon Toothless take to the skies in search of answers. It’s much more than he bargained for, though, when Hiccup discovers that a mysterious dragon rider is really his...

“Everything is awesome. Everything is cool when you’re part of a team”
Kids and adults alike went to see The Lego Movie this past weekend to the tune of $69 million in ticket sales. The film that everyone loves is set for another awesome weekend at the box office.
Visually, it is a photo-real, non-traditional computer animation style resembling stop-motion, which gives the characters and settings the endearing homemade aesthetic that defines Lego construction. The Lego Movie contains 3,863,484 unique Lego bricks. Some are reused and reconfigured in multiple scenes, making up sets, characters and props, for a total of 15,080,330 bricks—the number that a person would need if he or she wanted to recreate the entire film by hand.
As much as the visuals and storyline were important to this animated film, much of the credit to the overall success of this delightful movie has to go to the irresistible and exciting music.

Production is set to begin today on If I Stay for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), starring Chloë Grace Moretz (“Carrie”) as Mia and Jamie Blackley (“Snow White and The Huntsmen”) as Adam, with R.J. Cutler (“Nashville”) directing.
The film follows Mia (Moretz), who at age 16 has everything: a loving family, an adoring boyfriend, and a bright future full of music. Suddenly, a family drive on a snowy day changes everything. In an instant, almost all of that is taken from her. Caught between life and death, Mia spends one critical day contemplating her destiny, which is now more unknowable than ever. Is her soul mate’s love enough to keep her here? Tragic but ultimately hopeful, this is a romantic, riveting and uplifting story about music, life and love.
The film also stars Mireille Enos (“The Killing”) as Mia’s mother Kat, Stacy Keach (“Nebraska”) as Gramps, Liana Liberato (“Trust”) as Kim,...
