The finalists for the first Raw Science Film Festival were screened at Caltech, which received a nod for its contribution to film during the recent Academy Awards, and the awards presented to winners in the Zanuck Theater at Fox Studios on December 8, 2014. The festival honors talented filmmakers, both student and professional, and gives them the opportunity to receive recognition in front of a worldwide audience of leaders in entertainment, science, and technology.
In addition to this, the jury is comprised of longstanding members of the Academy. Andy Hendrickson (Cto, Disney Animation Studios) accepted an award for "Big Hero 6," which recently became the winner of the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
The 2014 Raw Science Film Festival was created by the Raw Science Foundation in association with Raw Science TV. The festival was made possible by the premiere sponsor and partner Science and Entertainment Exchange , which connects entertainment industry professionals with top scientists and engineers to create a synergy between accurate science and engaging storylines in both film and TV programming. $20,000 in cash prizes were awarded to winning filmmakers.
The festival was curated by Mitchell Block, the Executive Director of Programming for Raw Science TV, and produced by Yokeena Jamar.
The Jury included Academy Award winning & nominated filmmakers Luke Matheny (Best Short Film, “God of Love”), Randal Kleiser (“Grease” and “Honey I Blew up the Kid”), Martha Coolidge (“Real Genius” and “The Twilight Zone” TV Series), and John Singleton (“Boyz n the Hood” and “Tupac”), Liz Keim ( The Exploratorium), and Iram Parveen Bilal (“Josh”).
Presenters included Martha Coolidge and Martin Gunderson ("Real Genius"), S&Ee’s Kevin Grazier ("Gravity," "Battlestar Galactica"), Rick Loverd (Science and Entertainment Exchange), and filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal.

Hollywood — You might not have heard the name Nicole Perlman much as it pertains to Marvel properties, but she's a big reason why "Guardians of the Galaxy" will be making its way to theaters next weekend. She toiled away as a screenwriter for a few years after her days at Nyu, cooking up projects with a science bent because that's where her passions lie — projects like "Challenger," a fascinating account of the investigation of the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster written as a love letter to Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman. Then, she made her way to the comic book giant under the company's now-defunct screenwriting program and plucked the intergalactic heroes from obscurity, setting them on a crash course for the silver screen. It may be largely James Gunn's colorful vision on that screen, but it's definitely Perlman's passion that helped bring the property to the table in the first place.

As indicated by the ominous, albeit incredibly creepy cool third season key art that TNT recently released in anticipation of the upcoming third season, the peace and tranquility fought for during last summer’s second season finale of Falling Skies was probably too good to be true. Confirming our suspicions, was none other than executive producer Remi Aubuchon who recently took some time at WonderCon to share a bit of intel action, adventure, mystery and romance is in store for fans this summer. See for yourself, after the jump.
What can you share about the new species of aliens that were introduced at the end of Season 2?
Remi: Obviously it was a heartbeat of a moment at the end of the second season with this new alien that showed up, and our characters ask the question that hopefully we’re all asking, which is: “What the hell?! Haven’t...

The notorious fracking L.A. traffic did its best to derail the 35th Anniversary Battlestar Galactica panel that kicked off WonderCon 2013.
Thankfully, star of the original and re-imagined BSG Richard Hatch, scientific advisor Kevin Grazier, and Producer Michael Taylor soldiered on even without Ellen Tigh and Lili Bordan (who arrived about halfway through — just in time for the favorite episode question). Right after a special encore showing of the 30th Anniversary tribute, Hatch and crew went straight to audience questions which ran the gamut from the nostalgic to the technical.
Below, check out a few of the things we learned from the panel.

According to Deadline, that was no official trailer. It was a demo reel, not intended for the public and therefore not not put through the process of clearing music and other rights. It’s currently unclear how the reel made its way into WonderCon and that panel; maybe it’s a mystery of science!
The point, however, is that the trailer going viral did in fact elicit a response from Syfy president of original programming, Mark Stern. By way of background, Blood & Chrome was originally conceived as an online series. It wasn’t until fall of 2010 that Syfy gave the...

After the more cerebral Caprica failed to light up ratings at the Syfy Channel, the cable net –still perhaps stung by criticism of the metaphysical conclusion to the rebooted Battlestar Galactica – ordered another, more action-packed prequel TV series set during the tenth year of the first war with the Cylons and followed a young William Adama and was called Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. That was October of 2010. Because the show was using virtual sets, which also included other CGI effects as well, it led to an extensive post-production which meant the pilot was not finished until November of 2011. But despite the delay, it seems, fans kept the flame alive and continued to inquire when the cable net was going to finally air the movie and then series.
According to Deadline, back in January at the TCA’s, the “Syfy president (of) original programming Mark Stern was quoted as saying...

WonderCon was quite the event last weekend, as you’ve seen by our coverage. Opening night’s offerings included a panel entitled “The Science of Battlestar Galactica” with Dr. Kevin Grazier, scientific advisor to many sci-fi shows, including the newer Battlestar Galactica. His presentation discussed the science in sci-fi, and included a reading, of sorts, of an excerpt from his book The Science of Battlestar Galactica.
He finished with a jaw-dropping flourish, however, when he screened for the audience this trailer from the hopefully-upcoming Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome:

It was almost exactly one year ago today – March 23, 2011 – that we last brought you news from Syfy about this – pilot? movie? – and we’re still waiting for more. Here’s the most recent information:

Just a few updates to end the week.
Blood and Chrome trailer was shown at the BSG panel at WonderCon this weekend. Hero Complex has a report from the panel with Kevin Grazier. Here is a description of the trailer (no, it's not available anywhere yet):
At the end of his talk, Grazier screened a trailer for the upcoming “Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome,” a two-hour television film which is set in the 10th year of the First Cylon War. Edited at rapid-cutting pace to Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of “Immigrant Song” for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” – which was actually quite fitting with images of ice-covered planets and (space)ships – the trailer ended with title cards flashing the words “It’s time for a SyFy game-changer.”Still no official word on what Blood and Chrome is (a TV film or a pilot) even though...

2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.
WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!
I've put stars next to the panels we are interested in attending. Check out the schedule, and let us know what you are looking forward to seeing most!

One chaotic round of updates coming up.
Jane Espenson has announced the new project she has been working on with Alessandra Torresani, Brad Bell (Cheeks) and Sean Hemeon, in an interview with CliqueClack. Yes, it's Husbands, a web series about "two guys, a newly dating couple, who celebrate a new marriage equality law in Vegas and wake up married." A couple of snippets from the interview:
Km: What do you hope to become of Husbands in the long run? If it simply stays as a free series on the web, will that satisfy not only you but the actors?
Je: Honestly, I would love to see Husbands turn into a network television show. I’m loving the freedom that we’re enjoying as we put it together ourselves, but there’s something about it that feels so accessible — it’s Ab Fab, Dharma and Greg, Will and Grace … it feels...

Airlock Alpha has the first report from the Battlestar panel at Comic-Con. Richard Hatch, Kevin Grazier, Michael Nankin and Lili Bordan were there, and Michael Taylor had to skip because of surgery. Get better soon, Michael Taylor.
Here is what is happening with Blood and Chrome:
The pilot is not expected to be completed until at least October, especially since the sets were extremely minimal, Bordan said. Hatch told the crowd that Syfy plans to air "Blood & Chrome" as a movie event first, and a backdoor pilot, similar to what was done with "Caprica." It looks like the network is not spending the money to do a miniseries, like it did with "Battlestar Galactica."Also, unless there was a misunderstanding at the panel, they are/were exploring the possibility of showing it in 3D. Read the whole article for more details.
Esai Morales has a new film in the works.

There will be a lot more blood and guts in the new "Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome," but it might be a lot more real than you could imagine. Lili Bordan, who plays Graystone Industries employee Dr. Becca Kelly, said there was talk that the new series will take the "Avatar" route even further, and be presented three-dimensionally. "They were using three cameras, and I'm not sure ... I should know if it was 3-D," Bordan said. "There were talks of it being in 3-D." Bordan shared that bit of news during a "Battlestar Galactica" panel at San Diego Comic-Con that included actor Richard Hatch, director Michael Nankin and science advisor Kevin Grazier. Bordan was the lone representative from "Blood & Chrome," as pilot writer Michael Taylor had to miss Comic-Con because of surgery. Bordan ...

We're less than two weeks away from the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, and convention organizers have finally released the schedule for the first day of programing. You can find the full schedule on comic-con.org [1], or after the jump I've listed the film and television highlights, which includes the Masters of the Web panel which I've been invited to be a panelist on (In full disclosure, I've been asked to be on this panel for a few years now, but I've only just recently gotten over my fear of speaking in front of large audiences). It should be a fun panel, and I hear they will be giving away some really cool prizes as well. A few interviews in this round. More updates coming later.
Jane Espenson did a couple of interviews recently. One appeared on the Italian site Comicus.it (scroll down for the English version). In it, she talks about her work on Buffy, Torchwood, Firefly, Warehouse 13, Game of Thrones, and Caprica. In case it the finale ending wasn't clear to everyone, here is the relevant bit:
Even though it was canceled, it sort of had a real end. Was it the end you had in mind for the first season and you originally wanted to show us what would happen after that in following seasons, or did you speed things up to show us the series' real end?
We did accelerate the story a lot at the end, but not because we had any notion of trying to give viewers a conclusion to a canceled show. The cancelation (actually it was...

The first review of Caprica 1x11, "Retribution," which airs on Tuesday (Oct. 12) at 10 pm on Syfy, is up at The Trades. A few snippets are below and you can follow the link for the full review (with spoilers).
Strong stuff as usual from this series, highlighted by some particularly good performances from Magda Apanowicz (as Lacy), Eric Stoltz (as Daniel) and Polly Walker (as Clarice). I particularly enjoyed the interplay that Daniel has with the Adamas, and Lacy trying to come to grips with what she's doing out of friendship for Zoe. (...)
Still, this is strong work and certainly not falling to any sort of traditional convention for a science fiction TV series. I can even forgive the time jumps here, as they're a small part of this episode and nothing anywhere near as annoying as, say, how it's done on another NBC/Universal property like the new series The Event...
